Six years after sophomore full-length album "Continuum," the L.A. metal act Prototype has now returned to the scene with new album "Catalyst," released earlier this month through Nightmare Records. With the album out now and pummeling metal fans into submission, guitarist Kragen Lum got in touch with us to help get the word out about the new release.
A transcript of our chat can be read below, which offers a look into the sci-fi concept on these new songs and covers how the band changed up the sound by using seven string guitars. You can also find out info about Kragen's other band's Heathen and Pyschosis, along with his thoughts on the state of the current L.A. metal scene. More...
Ektomorf has released a new music video for the song "Unscarred," which can be viewed below. The band has also issued the following announcement about a lineup change:
“Sadly Mike had to quit for family reasons. It was a great time with him playing music and we are still friends. There’s no bad blood between us at all. I had the intention to call Tamàs (Schrottner), our previous guitar player, again after two years. We had a great fucking talk the very next day. He joined us on the 'Unscarred' video shoot and now Tamàs is back in the band. We had a killer rehearsal and we are ready to kick asses on the 'Black Flag' tour! See ya all soon!”
The "Unscarred" track comes off the band's new album "Black Flag," released on August 31st, 2012.

Arch Enemy's "Khaos Legions" campaign moves forward with a new video for the song “Cruelty Without Beauty” from the latest album, along with more tour dates to spread the Khaos worldwide. Check out the clip through Revolvermag.com here or in the player below.
Angela Gossow comments: “I’m very pleased we got this video done for one of my favourite songs off the Khaos Legions album. The video is quite raw and extreme as it reflects the lyrics very well I believe, dealing with a subject matter close to my heart - animal cruelty and vivisection.
"We want to thank the good folks at Peta2, Hardforce, Metalitalia and The Metal Circus for supporting a serious subject. All of us have been well aware that a video like this doesn’t find everybody’s acceptance. But rock music was always more than guitar riffs – it’s also the voice of the voiceless.
"The autumn will be busy with more Arch Enemy European shows including 4 shows in Spain with special support from extreme metal legends Voivod. The year will close with a South America tour ending in Mexico City (where despite the Mayan Calendar the world doesn’t end). The band hopes to see you somewhere!" More...
Milwaukee-based wrecking crew Enabler has just announced a new string of North American live assaults set to run from mid-October through the first week of November. With shows booked as part of the annual CMJ conference in New York City, this year’s installment of the massive Fest, Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, Texas, the eleventh annual incarnation of The Fest in Gainesville, Florida and more, Enabler will share the stage with the likes of Yakuza, Former Thieves, Converge, Kvelertak, Brutal Truth and a range of other potent acts along the way.
Following a brutal touring schedule over the first half of the year, Enabler took a bit of time to regroup. The new incarnation of this crushing riff engine contains founding guitarist/vocalist Jeff Lohrber (Today Is the Day, Trap Them, Harlots) and bassist Amanda Daniels, who now induct new drummer Dave Mann (Mouth of the Architect, ex-Rune) and new guitarist Eric Dunn (By Way of Sunstorm, ex Harlots), re-solidifying the outfit’s lineup.
The band’s Southern Lord debut "All Hail the Void" surges with 35-minutes of lethal material, which has pillaged media outlets internationally since its release in July. "All Hail The Void" can still be streamed in its entirety via Blow The Scene right here. More...
Reports have been going around the Web since Monday that Century Media Records is suing several thousand individuals who illegally downloaded the "Dark Adrenaline" album (reviewed here) by Lacuna Coil and the "Dystopia" album (reviewed here) by Iced Earth.
Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer comments on Century Media’s file sharing lawsuit:
“It has come to my attention that Century Media is suing fans over illegal downloads of (among others) our latest album ‘Dystopia’. I felt it was important to clarify that we had no knowledge of this motion and were, sadly, not asked permission.
"We all know the music industry is changing. We have been adapting to this model by embracing legal streaming services such as Spotify and by bringing our music to places we have never played before by touring our proverbial asses off.
"As much as we respect that the labels are having a harder time selling music, we feel this is a misguided effort and want to make sure our fans know we would have not given our consent would we have been asked.”

Metal Injection & Peavey present Louder Education, a new collaborative show starring Testament shredder Alex Skolnick, Sound Of Urchin's Chris “Tomato” Harfenist, and the students of T.H.O.R. (Tomato's House of Rock). Each week on the series, a new special guest is invited to Tomato's House of Rock, to discuss their journey in the music business, provide educational tips for the growing artists, and round off the show with a kick-ass jam with the kids.
On this edition, the gang is joined by Howard Stern show personality and legendary drummer Richard Christy of Charred Walls of The Damned, and formerly of Death and Iced Earth. Richard talks about his humble beginnings, how he got into Death, life on the road and speaks of the benefits of wearing a diaper while going to metal shows. It all culminates with a jam of Death's "Crystal Mountain" by Christy and the T.H.O.R. Kids.
Power metal act Crescent Shield, which released "The Stars of Never Seen" (reviewed here) back in 2009, experienced the tragic loss of vocalist Michael Grant earlier this year. Guitarist Dan DeLucie has issued the following statement about the recent memorial service for Michael:
"Michael Grant’s west coast memorial was held on Aug 19th 2012 and it was everything we hoped it would be. I think it’s fair to say everyone in attendance learned more about Michael and attained a greater appreciation for him and his music. It was an emotionally charged event, both sad and painful, but also filled with joy and appreciation in remembering the good times with Mike.
"Many people came together to make this event the powerful and special tribute it was. Michael’s brother Luke was the driver behind the whole affair, arranging the facility, food, and coordinating the actual event. Michael’s mother Betsy, father Michael, and brother Andrew travelled from Connecticut to provide huge significance to the memorial. Horacio Colmenares was instrumental, providing sound engineering, equipment, and audio and video production. My wife Vasiliki provided hours of work creating a touching slide show, memorial book, and flowers. Tony DeVita was fantastic with his inspiring performance of 'Sleep' by Savatage. My friends and bandmates Melanie Sisneros and Craig Anderson both gave stirring performances of Mike’s song The Passing.
"Everyone who gave a speech eulogizing Mike was wonderful. Betsy Grant’s speech was illuminating and touching. Andrew Grant was evocative and his acapella rendition of 'Abide with Me' was heartrending. Luke captured Michael’s personality and humor to a T. And Michael’s father’s candid speech was a powerful coda to the eulogies. Some others who also spoke were my wife Vasiliki who remembered Mike’s big heart and kindness, Melody Schoenfeld who recounted highlights of her long history of friendship with Mike, Kragen Lum (Prototype, Heathen) who remembered Mike and his music, Kari VanCamp who recalled Mike’s supportive nature, and others who spoke of their special connection with Mike. If there was ever an event for a first time festival goer, it would be ProgPower USA. Unfortunately, fans here are spoiled by the incredible privileges, some of which could never be properly duplicated by any of the huge European festivals. In Atlanta, you won’t find camping sites, 80,000 people and huge immense lines for signing sessions. What you will find is a community of about 1200 well-educated and well versed fans that throw an amazing party and represent some of the nicest people from all over the U.S. and the world. However, it is a party which also includes the many members of the best bands you can find in the world (not just those who are playing) all within an incredibly intimate setting of a venue that is as unmatched in sound quality as it is fan friendly. For its first 12 years, ProgPower USA seemed out of my reach for reasons I cannot fully explain or comprehend (stupidity comes to mind). However, lucky #13 consisted of a lineup which I personally felt was the strongest in its history (though called “weak” by progressive fan standards), and was perfect for my very first taste of the ProgPower USA experience. As soon as this lineup was announced last year, I drew up the battle plan to attend. The ability to see Serenity, Mystic Prophecy, Pretty Maids and so many others make their debut U.S. performances was something of a dream for this aging fan boi. Topping it off was a headline performance my current favorite Epica, so finding a way to get there became mandatory. What transpired exceeded all my hopes and expectations, a dream I wish I never woke from. Jordan Perry, drummer for the Canadian technical death metal band Derelict, has released two new exclusive videos. The first is a peek into the recording sessions of the band's 2012 album, "Perpetuation," as Perry lays down the parts for the song "Intricate Decay." The second is a lesson video in which Perry explains how to play the intro to the song "Digital Birthright." Check them out below.
Derelict released new album "Perpetuation" this year, which was mixed and mastered by Chris Donaldson of Cryptopsy, and contains 12 furious tracks that put forth an upgraded version of what Derelict fans have come to love. “This album has been long in the making, and saw the band through some intense challenges,” says vocalist Eric Burnet. “We survived our trials and came back much stronger. Perpetuation is streamlined Derelict: it has fast tempos and brutal riffs, but lots of melody and catchiness too. We all pushed ourselves to expand what we could do with our instruments, and we got Sébastien Pittet from Augury playing fretless bass on this thing too!” More...

Enslaved has now posted the fourth of eight track-by-track installments from Grutle Kjellson and Ivar Bjørnson for twelfth studio album, "RIITIIR" (reviewed here), due out in Europe on September 28th and in North America on October 9th.
Kjellson comments on track #4, “Roots Of The Mountain:”
“One of our greatest friends in The States tends to use the term ‘Epic as f**k’ to describe something grandiose and this is the closest I get to describe this song. Yes, it sounds pompous, but I've always said that our goal is to make our own favorite music, so why be sober or moderate in the descriptions? I remember that Ivar came to the rehearsal place and put on the demo for me and Cato [Bekkevold, drummer], and we got totally blown away! In the middle of the second listening, Herbrand [Larsen, keyboards & clean vocals] appeared, looking genuinely confused, and I thought: This is a good sign!!! He is usually the Rock-structure alibi in the band, so to see that he was a bit worried really satisfied the rest of us. Of course, he also ended up loving the song after digging into the matter and started working on the arrangements.
"This song has everything one can ask for in an ENSLAVED song: aggressive and old-school metal riffs, a pompous chorus, and progressive passages. It also includes my favorite guitar solo on the album and shows [lead guitarist] Ice [Dale]'s talent for transforming almost FM-rock solos into a monstrous extreme metal inferno!! I love it! I can even find inspiration from our good old countryman Ronni LeTekrø from TNT here - one of the bands me and Ice tend to listen to on our days-off on the tour bus if we have been drinking one or two barrels too much. The lyrics are, again, inspired by different mythologies/philosophical systems around the world with mutual ways of approaching the search for the ultimate answers. When you seek truths and answers, you rarely find them where they would logically appear. It is sometimes important to go with the flow and accept the reality as-is, and thus find the truths in the end. The roots of the mountain will appear for you if you use the eyes of the eagle in the sky…well, maybe it will.” More...

Moribund Cult Records confirmed today that the next full length release from Haeresiarchs of Dis, originally set for November 27th, has been pushed to Jan - Feb of 2013. The packaging for this release will be presented as a hardcover CD book designed by studio Toadstool Enterprises. This special packaging requires a few more months to execute.
Of the presentation band mastermind Cernunnos commented: "Because this chapter of Haeresiarchs of Dis is translated from a linear piece of ancient text, I wanted a design to reflect this. It will be presented as an old book fragment with annotations and sparse artwork. This I feel better represents the work as a whole."
Cernunnos also commented that there has been a "revolving door" around artwork and design changes, and a finalized version, including cover, may not be available until release.
