35 news articles posted on this day.
Back in the dark days of metal, the 90's, New Orleans' Acid Bath formed and began rising through the underground ranks with their unique mesh of death, thrash, groove, stoner/doom, and sludgy NOLA sound and themes that largely centered around death, drugs, and serial killers. The band did not last long enough for a full ascent, however, releasing just two albums and finally disbanding in 1997 when bassist Audie Pitre and his parents were killed by a drunk driver. Those two studio albums, "When the Kite String Pops" (1994) and "Paegan Terrorism Tactics" (1996), however, were then cemented as underground classics.
Members of Acid Bath went on to form numerous other bands including Agents of Oblivion, Vual, Ritual Killer, and most notably, Goatwhore.
Being an underground band, Acid Bath played mostly smaller clubs and never had an impressive light show. When they came to Baltimore (and I regrettably passed on seeing them for another show), they played some little hole in the wall that I'd never heard of before. So you can't expect too much of an impressive live video outside of the performance itself. Here's a video apparently shot in one such small joint, of their live performance of "Bleed Me An Ocean" in Omaha, with a bonus performance of "Scream of the Butterfly" after the jump.

Self Spiller has issued the following update about streaming a new album sample online:
"There will be much more information to come, but here I am, after 5 years of hard work, introspection, and life upheaval, as well as two albums worth of material scrapped introducing Self Spiller; the project I have always tried to assemble, and always failed, the album I have always wanted to write, but never knew how.
"The sample in the player is a rough mix from an as of yet untitled album to be released on Vendlus Records.
"For those of you wondering, the ELS page is gone, replaced with Self Spiller. It is appropriate because for years I thought I was writing an ELS album, when in fact I was creating Self Spiller. Yes, this means no new ELS album now, or anytime soon, maybe never again. Please Welcome Self Spiller"
Portland's Agalloch has issued the following statement about having a ritual item stolen during a show in Milwaukee:
"We had an excellent time in Milwaukee last night and the audience was wonderful. It was a great surprise. However, a very important canine skull was stolen from the stage during 'The Lodge' and we would like to get it back.
"It is a very sentimental piece and we would like to think that the person who grabbed it simply did not consider this. There were a lot of random horns and bones scattered across the front of the stage that perhaps didn't look important or replaceable. This skull is not replaceable!
"If whoever took it would bring it to the Chicago show tonight and would just put it on the stage, all will be forgiven and forgotten. We do not want our memories of these Midwest gigs to be tainted.
Atreyu has issued the following statement about streaming a new song online tonight:
"You may have noticed there are no songs on our player right now. There's a reason for that. We're posting our 1st song off our new album 'Congregation Of The Damned' this Sunday (tomorrow) at 10:27pm EST, the song is called 'STOP! BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE AND WE’VE DESTROYED IT ALL…'. Step on up and get knocked the fuck down!!!! New album in stores everywhere Oct 27"

"Other than that, things feel good and we're having a blast so come out and check this epic force!!"

"We are still working on new songs for the next 'demo,' (meaning a 'pro' demo and no crap sounding 'necro' type stuff) and things slowly starts to take shape, but there is still some work to do before we go into the studio to record the next couple of songs.
"However, we'll use a session drummer for the next recording, since the departure of Tomas Asklund, and as it looks, we think we have found the guy to do the job. Anyway, in the meantime, here's a 45-second snippet of one of the upcoming songs on the next demo, entitled 'Killing Christ'...(now uploaded on the MySpace Music player)...
"This is a just some really harsh and rough demo outtake...and nothing else. This song will of course be professionally recorded for the next demo."

Megadeth front man has issued the following statement about their recent video for the song "Head Crusher:"
"I have been surfing around the site today, whilst doing my Yoga workout, and working some more around the studio; reviewing the Head Crusher video etc., etc., etc.
"Speaking of the HC vidi, there are three versions: My extreme version - not really extreme, just the real thing that hasn't been emasculated for broadcast; the boradcast version, which isn't really too different from the etreme version; and the UK version, which has no fight scene in it at all.
"The girl in the vidi is smokin' and she is really skilled at MMA. I asked to really focus in on her skills and not so much how beautiful she was, because the world is full of hot chicks. We needed someone to play a specific role. That she did! Our fighters too were great. In fact you should call Jorge Oliviera at TheLIVELine and leave him a message. I am going to workout with him a few times and talk to him about maybe putting up some Ju-Jitsu lessons for a contest for TLL.
"The main fighter was in one of Rob Zombie's recent movies, and was a good sport about letting that pretty, sexy, talented MMA/model jump on him at the end, straddle him (we had to twist his arm ), and the bonus was she got to beat his head in [not really]. I almost could read everyone's mind around her when she did it too. It was pretty easy because we were ALL thinking it.
"As I near another birthday, I want to say that while you seem to think that I have given YOU the present, meaning ENDGAME, I disagree. The real present is your support and love, again meaning the present is YOU.
"Sure it hurts to see people here that go to the extent to lurk with a fake name and go through the whole process of getting registered here, just to come in here lobbing grenades at everyone. Sometimes banning cures it, sometimes not. Please remember that I play music because I love to play, but that doesn't mean that your opinions or your approval doesn't matter to me. I am still the boy next door; an old boy, but still a boy.
"All of the positive comments that have come from around the world leave me scratching my head and eternally grateful, but it also makes it really hard to tolerate people that say the record sucks. I can't help but think, ‘this is what happens when cousins f*ck each other,’ and keep on with my life. More...
Misery Index has issued the following statement about canceling their appearance at the Mezcal Metalfest in Mexico:
"Hello all! Instead of being in Mexico City to play the Mezcal Metalfest on Sunday, we are sitting here in Baltimore wondering why the festival organizers did not follow through with their agreements. Way back in May when we accepted the invitation to play the show we asked them to apply for work visas for us so we can enter the country legally and perform at the show. In our experience, when traveling to many destinations outside the US, work visas are a basic requirement. Promoters routinely have to get them so the bands they invite will be able to pass through Immigration without any issues. Having been to Canada, the UK, Russia, Japan, etc., we are very familiar with the visa process and have no desire to run afoul of the local authorities.
"As working foreign nationals attempting to enter Mexico illegally as tourists (as the Mezcal Metalfest Organizers requested), we would face hefty fines, jail, or being flagged to never enter the country again. It's obvious when you arrive with guitars, merchandise, and other equipment that you are not just on vacation. With the ease of finding information on a band's activities via the internet, we don't like taking chances by trying to fool the Immigration authorities. However, after assuring us many times over the past few weeks that the necessary paperwork would be taken care of, the promoter failed to take any action on the visas (as described here). Yet, he still expected us to enter Mexico illegally as 'tourists.'
"We all love playing the Metal, but when we are expected to take risks due to a promoter's negligence, we are left with no choice but to make the unfortunate decision to cancel the show in question. Such is the case with the Mezcal Metalfest. We are very unhappy to have to pass up this opportunity to travel to Mexico City and play the gig. Apologies to everyone who had expected to see us there and we hope to finally get the chance to play there at some point in the future. Thanks for your understanding. Cheers!"
Throne of Malediction has issued the following update about streaming a Carpathian Forest cover on their MySpace page:

Nachtmystium has issued the following statement about entering the recording studio in January:
"We're honored to announce our upcoming tour supporting Swedish black metal legends MARDUK. It's an honor to be going out with this band we've all been listening to for years and to be getting back on the road after a rocky year between canceled tours and festivals due to injuries and other unfortunate circumstances.
"We're currently working on material for 'Black Meddle Part II' (official title to be announced) and will be doing a demoing pre-production session with Sanford Parker in October. The new material is reminiscent of 'Assassins' with more of a rock and roll edge over all. Our love for post-rock and industrial (ala MINISTRY, KILLING JOKE, etc) is even more present this time around.
"We're hoping to make a record that will continue to push extreme music into uncharted territories. Recording for the new record will begin in early January and we project to have the record out in March or April."

Metallica warmed up for the next leg of the World Magnetic tour with a concert in their backyard, playing for the very first time in their home town of San Rafael, CA, just north of San Francisco.
Metallica's Marin County debut at the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium was an appearance as part of a fundraiser for the Marin Museum of History's Marin Rocks exhibition slated to open in 2010. The Marin Rocks museum is set to open summer 2010 in downtown San Rafael, and will include exhibits celebrating Marin's rock music heritage, performance spaces and educational programs for young people in music and the arts.
Metallica's James Hetfield has lived in Marin since the mid-'80s. He bought a 500-acre spread in San Rafael, he lives there with his wife, Francesca, and three children, Cali, Castor and Marcella, ages 11, 9 and 7.
James Hetfield lives a quiet, low-key life in Marin County, and is always content to stay under the radar. But as the museum plans hit financial trouble, James Hetfield came to the rescue and offered to hold a Metallica concert with proceeds going to the museum. Tickets for the 2,000 seat Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium venue went between $100 and $350 and sold out in ten minutes.
"We've never done a public show. I don't know why. Probably because there aren't that many places to play in Marin that are large enough to satisfy enough people," James Hetfield said to the Independent Journal. "But in the last few years, basically after 'St. Anger,' we started getting more into public service, giving back to the community, discovering how good that feels."
"Growing up struggling in a dysfunctional family and being able to turn to music as my escape and therapy and savior is dear to my heart," James Hetfield of Metallica said. "So introducing kids to music and having a safe clean place for the youth of Marin to come in and jam, talk about their problems and write songs together really excites me."
"It's very easy in Marin. Most of the people who stop me are very polite, saying things like, `Hey, James, what's up?' That's pretty much it. The people who get star struck or clingy are tourists, and they associate their trip to Marin with me. Everyone else sees me as a resident of this county. It's very easy to kick back and be an equal."
Moonalice, featuring Marin musicians Pete Sears and Barry Sless, opened the show. Metallica came out a little after 9:30 p.m., James Hetfield thanked the crowd, saying: "We appreciate you coming out to support the ancestry and the history of music in Marin County."
The setlist of Metallica's show was as follows:
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Harvester of Sorrow
Fade to Black
Broken, Beat, and Scarred
Sad But True
Master of Puppets
Nothing Else Matters
Hit the Lights
Seek and Destroy
