The second Metal Masters clinic took place tonight at the Best Buy Theater in New York City. Anthrax was scheduled to perform at 9pm EST, but what fans did not know is their special guest line up earlier in the night would make metal history. Frank Bello, Charlie Benante, and Scott Ian from Anthrax were joined on stage by David Ellefson of Megadeth, ex Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, Slayer's Kerry King, and former Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo. The Best Buy Theater erupted when the group broke into some of Pantera's most memorable hits. You can see video of the songs "A New Level" and "Fucking Hostile" below.
Taking a darkly humorous look at issues both serious and not-so-serious, Germany's Hackneyed recently dropped a new full-length appropriately titled "Carnival Cadavre" (check out the review here).
In the post release aftermath, Metalunderground.com got in touch with Hackneyed drummer Tim Cox to get an inside look at "Carnival Cadavre" and see what the band had to say about the writing, recording, and lyrical content of the album. More...

New York metal band Grey Skies Fallen has made their latest release, "Along Came Life" available as a free download on their website.
The 2010 EP now joins GSF's first 3 full length albums as free downloads, making them one of the few active bands offering their entire discography for free.

The new album is a return to the melodic death/doom sound of "Tomorrow's in Doubt." The end result will be a 20-minute opus, as well as two other songs which will make up "Introspective." GSF has stated in the past that they are now releasing EP's digitally once or twice a year instead of doing traditional full-length albums every couple of years.

Randy Blythe, vocalist for Lamb of God, recently took to his official Twitter account discussing the 10 year anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy and the impact it had on his life. You can read Blythe's statement below.
"10 years ago I woke up late as usual, drank some coffee, & walked to my cooking job at Avalon restaraunt in RVA. I was in a good mood. I came in & saw my buddy Steve (born & raised in NYC) & said "Wassup man" & he said "I guess we’re at war again man." I looked up & the TV. I saw the planes fly into the towers again & again. I didn’t really understand it at first. Didn’t open the restaurant that day. We watched. As the day wore on, I watched the tv, it sank in what had happened to all those people & I remember thinking "Things will never be the same."
"Finally at some point in the day it REALLY sunk in & I began to cry. NYC, the Pentagon, the passengers on 93 who fought them TO THE GROUND. I wanted the images to stop, & at some point I stopped watching tv. But the images wouldn’t stop, & have shaped my life since in many ways. A lot of ugly things happened after 9/11 but for a brief time there was a spirit of unity amongst my people, OUR people, the American people.
"Today I think should be a solemn day of reflection, not just on those lost & their kin, but on the meaning of what it is to be one of us. I have been literally around the world several times, & I remain convinced that the United States of America is THE GREATEST NATION ON EARTH. We are ONE nation made up of MANY people. Let us remember that, & try to act accordingly. It should not take a tragedy to remind us if that.
"Ten years later, I’m in NYC having my coffee, then I’ll go to work just like in 2001. But first I’ll stop by Ground Zero to pay my respects. So it’s a sad day, but it’s good for me to be here. New York City still stands tall, as does DC near my Virginian home. We ain’t going away & we WONT go away as long as we remain UNITED. THINK about it, & be good to each other. Im off to Ground Zero. Have a good day."

Nightfall has released the video clip for the title track of the band's latest album "Astron Black," which can be viewed below.
Comments director Achilleas Gatsopoulos: "We decided not to go safe and continue with the shadow puppet approach for the second video too, even though there is still a lot of space for experimentation within that. Instead, I came up with an entirely different style that would add yet another facet to the complex task of visualising Nightfall's music.
"Working with the lyrics and with Efthimis conceptual guidance, I set up a vast backdrop of space and time for our characters to inhabit, incorporating various planetary and astronomical elements. The characters include mythical deities such as Gaia, Prometheus, Venus / Pandora, as well as Astron Black, who symbolises mankind and its progress through time.
"The video also incorporates Pandora's myth from Hesiod's Theogony. Gaia gives birth to stars and deities, to Prometheus. Prometheus stole the fire (also a metaphor for knowledge and practical thought) and gave it to man. Zeus punished Prometheus by binding him to a rock where the great eagle would come and eat his intestines every day. As an act of revenge on mankind, he creates Pandora, the first woman. Here we present Venus Pandora, who also posseses the power of sexual desire over man. Her curiosity proves fatal, as she opens the urn bestowed to her by the Gods, unleashing all evils upon mankind, leaving only hope inside.
"The style of the video brings together various elements such as stylish costumes, live action footage and CGI, adding a modern approach to the ancient but timeless imagery of our characters and situations. I truly believe that once again we managed to successfully recreate and enhance the lyrical and musical themes and create something unique that will stand the test of time stylistically."
Progressive metal act To-Mera has issued the following brief update about preparing to record the band's upcoming third full-length album:
"About time for another album update. The majority of album 3 is now written. There are still a few things to finish off and some bits to rewrite, but, all being well, we should be making a start on the recording in December."
The upcoming album will be the follow-up to the "Earthbound" EP and the "Delusions" album (reviewed here). You can also check out photos of the band rehearsing the new material by heading over to the To-Mera Facebook profile.
GunShyAssassin.com is premiering the track "Your Loyal Betrayer" from Swedish extreme death metallers As You Drown’s forthcoming album "Rat King" (out 10/11 in North America). Check out "Your Loyal Betrayer" by heading over here.
The successor to the band's 2009 debut "Reflection," "Rat King" was recorded at the bands own AYD Studio in Borås and was mixed and mastered by Plec (Watain, Scar Symmetry, Miseration) at Panic Room Studio in Skövde in July 2011. Lyrically, the album explores the medieval German folk phenomena of rat kings, which were associated with plagues that devastated the European continent. The track listing is as follows:
2. Slaves To The Kingdom Of Fear
3. You Should Be Paranoid
4. Rabid Wolves In Sheep's Clothing
5. Your Loyal Betrayer
6. The Coming
7. The Nothing
8. Bleeding Structure
9. Cleansing Hands
Vocalist Henrik Blomqvist commented on the album "We are delighted to finally be finished with the recording of our second album, entitled Rat King, which will be out in October via Metal Blade. The album - mixed and mastered by Plec at Panic Room Studios - features artwork by Mark Riddick, as well as by Sven de Caluwe of the mighty Aborted and System Divide, and nine epic songs of skull crushing death metal mayhem and darkness. It feels like we've taken everything we do to a whole new level on this one, and we can't wait to get out on the road and play these songs live. This new material is Intense although at the same time a lot more varied and dynamic than what we've done in the past. Keep your eyes and ears open friends. Death! Destruction!! Goats!"
Finnish folk metal act Korpiklaani announced that they have replaced long time violin player Hittavainen. His replacement is Teemu Erola. The band's announcement reads as follows:
"The Finnish folk metal ambassadors Korpiklaani announce a change in the lineup for the first time since 2005. Hittavainen who's been with band since the beginning will leave the band. There is a mutual understanding between him and the rest of the band and there is no big drama involved. His personal health issues made the constant touring and recording impossible.
The band found Hittavainen's replacement in a young prodigy Teemu Eerola, who's already been rehearsing hard with the band. Teemu has already proven himself to be an excellent replacement and magnificent company. He also plays violin.
The first show with the new lineup will be in Rotterdam on September 24. In Finland the revitalized band can be spotted in Pori on October 6 and in Helsinki later in the same month. The real test for Teemu's abilities and endurance will be the 24-date North American tour
starting on November 23."
Finland's Decaying has issued the following update about the recording process for the band's new album:
"Unfortunately the drum recordings were delayed to the end of this month. Recording solos, vocals and bass will continue meanwhile. The songs should be ready & mixed in October if everything goes well."
A previous update from the band also read:
"Today we started the recordings of our second album, 'Encirclement,' with rhythm guitar tracks. Got 4 songs down. Still missing lead guitars and solos - and of course bass, vocals and real drums.
"We will record drums in middle of September, three weeks until that. 10 songs - 65minutes long album coming, so there is loads of work to do. The album willl be ready within two months probably.
"Encirclement will be released through Hellthrasher Productions - and it will fucking kill! Stay tuned... Latest info on our Facebook page."
While Chicago has a reputation as a punk and hip hop town, there's still an active metal scene within the Windy City with some great gems that haven’t gotten nearly enough exposure. Even though Chicago may not have the same metal cred that Boston and Seattle have today, there is still a rawness and experimentation to Chicago metal fused into the scene's bloodstream. Less accessible than Gothenburg and nowhere near as technical as Montreal but certainly not lacking in creativity, the Chcago metal scene's mix of grittiness and experimentation has produced everything from Hewhocorrupts to Ministry to Nachtmystium and that same aesthetic is still alive in 2011 in any number of as yet undiscovered bands.
Now, as part of the Unearthing the Metal Underground series, Metal Underground.com presents three underground Chicago bands that deserve way more exposure and attention than they currently receive.
Blood of the Tyrant
Sounding like the bastard child of Black Sabbath and Mastodon, Blood of the Tyrant is an excellent example of progressive doom metal. While still only having one release to its name, released in 2008, Blood of the Tyrant is still one of Chicago's best unsigned bands, known for epic song lengths, impressive guitar solos and surprisingly energetic take on doom metal.

New York hardcore legends Sick Of It All have announced that they will be releasing a new record entitled, "Nonstop" on October 31st in Europe through Century Media Records. The album will consist of twenty songs from the band's catalogue, which have been re-recorded by the band to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Speaking about, "Nonstop," drummer Armand Majidi stated:
"This whole thing is partially because of working with Tue Madsen - the man who has finally made SOIA sound the way we should in the studio."
The band added: "It was a fun recording session, and a relatively easy one because we're so used to playing so many of these songs live. They're like second nature. Most of these songs make their way into our live sets all the time, so they're current - they reach new ears and are constantly refreshed by their exposure to a brand new audience. It's not like they had to be dusted off. We changed tempos mostly and some of the arrangements, but we didn't want to do anything too drastic. We wanted to keep most of the songs true to the originals, but with a more powerful sound that we feel makes them all they can be."
The tracklisting is as follows: More...

Volbeat has checked in with the following announcement about releasing a live DVD:
"Finally Volbeat are very excited to announce the release of: Live From Beyond Hell/Above Heaven. With engines revving, Volbeat takes Live From Beyond Hell/Above Heaven into over drive and jacks up their musical ride with footage from their sold out show in front of 10,000 fervent fans at the Forum in Copenhagen, to the House of Blues in Anaheim, CA and the Rock am Ring show in Germany. It's Volbeat conquering performance territory Stateside and across Europe, showing fans that the band is just as comfortable, charged and throttled in front of an audience as intimate as 1100 or as vast as 80,000.
"Filmed on 11 cameras, leaving no musical stone unturned, this is as close to a back stage pass as you can get. And joined by such musical greats as Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano of Anthrax/The Damned Things, Michael Denner (Mercyful Fate), Mille Petrozza (Kreator), Jacob Øelund, and L.G. (Entombed), viewers also witness Volbeat in a rock and metal Hall of Fame."
"Live From Beyond Hell/Above Heaven" will be released in Europe on November 21st via Vertigo/Universal on double DVD, Blu-Ray, limited double DVD + audio CD, CD, digital download and VOD. The track listing and American/Canadian release dates will be announced soon.
