Dez Fafara is very proud of Devildriver's new album "Winter Kills" (reviewed here) and he's not shy about sharing it, likening the album to a "killing stroke" that will make the rest of the scene stand up and take notice of the band.
"Winter Kills" drops on August 27th via Napalm Records, and now you can see what the frontman himself had to say about how this album was created, from song writing to artwork and onto visual representations like lyric videos.
In the full interview available below, Dez also talks about shooting a live DVD with no overdubs, the passion Napalm Records has for releasing the album, and how he hopes his lyrics can empower metal fans in the same way bands influenced him as a kid. More...
Norwegian act Cleaver, which features members of Chthon and ex-The Sickening, has checked in with the following announcement about inking a new record deal:
"Cleaver is stoked to announce that we have signed with Dead Center Productions, which will release our debut album 'When There's No More Room In Hell…' on CD in the fall of 2013. 'When There Is No More Room In Hell…' features 10 songs, including titles such as 'Demon Semen,' 'The Dead Will Walk the Earth,' and 'Necro XXX.'
"The album was recorded, mixed, and produced at Necrostable Studio with Cleaver's throat slitter Ola Langli doing the dirty job. Now Hell is running over and the gates have been swung open! Cleaver is here to hit a unexpecting metal scene in the face like a hammer of steel!"
Drummer Espen adds: "This album is so far from being progressive as you can get, its actually regressive! Hail the infernal metal gods."
"Drop the Needle: Boston Punk Anthology" is dedicated to vocalist Alec Steere aka "Smegma," who was hit by a train in 1999. The release is due out October 1st via Trev Records, and the following press release was also issued:
"Gang Green was the most raucous and explosive hardcore punk band in Boston from 1982-1986. 'Drop The Needle: Boston Punk Anthology' is a new compilation release of five old-school Boston punk, rock, and hardcore bands from the 1980's and 1990's.
"This release includes Gang Green's original 1985 version of the classic song 'Let's Drink Some Beer.' This rare studio recording has never been available on CD before and was co-written by Dicky Barrett from Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones fame. Check out the track below.
"Smegma + The Nunz featured members of hardcore legends Gang Green and The Freeze, with Alec Steere, former vocalist for Leper, who are considered to be Boston's very first hardcore band. Following Leper, Smegma + The Nunz became one of the most outrageous and most blasphemous bands in Boston in the early 80's. For the first time, here are five rare demo recordings by this now-infamous Boston punk band.
"Chuck Stilphen (guitar) and Walter Gustafson (drums) were members of Smegma + The Nunz, The Freeze, and also recorded with Glen Stilphen (bass) in Gang Green and Mallet Head. Chuck and Glen also appear with the bands Scratch and Celebrity Death Certificate, which also features Erich Thaler, from the influential Boston-based alt-metal band Stompbox, who released the landmark album Stress on Columbia Records in 1994." Romanian black metal outift Signatura Rerum released new album "In Sfarsit..." at the beginning of the month, and a track from the release titled "Blestem Soptit" can now be heard below. The band also comments:
"The bond between black metal and folk influences gives us that typical Carpathian aura and places us amongst few black metal bands who acquire this kind of musical expression.
"The band was formed at the initiative of Echivoc (vocals) and Vârcolac (quitar) who shaped the first Signatura Rerum's songs. Soon, Exitus (bass) and Stihia (guitar) joined the band.
"Lyrics are based on fantasy and folklore. Our first song 'Muntele Înghe?at' talks about a 'frozen god' from a fictive carpathian kingdom in decline. In this song, people's struggle and pain is well outlined on their road to find the 'Frozen God.' More...

"Here it is, the first official track from our upcoming album. There's not much to say. There are small changes in the musical direction and you probably won't get the lyrics, but they are inspired on a Galician landscape.
"We hope you like it, and if you do, please share it and spread the word. We'll really appreciate it. 'Land of the Grim' will be released this fall (hopefully) by Suspiria Records."
The album's track listing is as follows:

The New Dominion has excreted the "Atonement of Species" single, which comes off the "Procreating the Undivine" album. Check it out below. The band also comments:
"Due to the insane amount of responses we received on our first single 'Ommatidea,' we feel it is about time to introduce our next endeavor of sickness to humanity - 'Atonement of Species.'
"We trust we can again count on your relentless enthusiasm, as this track represents a far more more groovy, yet ruthless mid-pass death metal vibe. While being a nearly totally different facade of this band it still contains all the elements necessary for a crowd to go completely mental. Crank up your amps, gather your hordes and make your neck snap in the stampede."
Portland, Oregon-based powerhouse Diesto will release a mammoth fifth LP, "For Water or Blood," later this month via Eolian Empire. To help spread the news, The Sleeping Shaman is hosting the premiere of "Sirens." Check it out below.
The following press release was issued about the band:
"Comprised of guitarist/vocalist Chris Dunn, guitarist Mark Bassett, bassist Rusty Powers and drummer Devon Shirley, since the turn of the century Diesto has ravaged the lands with their pummeling riffery through a pile of releases and countless shows, their determination heralding the band as one of Portland’s hardest-working heavy acts. While their earlier days showcased a more noiserock-built flamboyance, over time the aggro has eroded a bit, the sharper edges of their rock now worn down to a smoother doom rock style, while all of the heaviness remains.
"Diesto's freshly completed fifth LP For Water or Blood -- their first release for Eolian Empire, and their first album to be released on vinyl -- finds the band continuing its journey West, its storied and troubled past dragged through the Cascadian forest to the Pacific Ocean, treading and crawling slowly but steadily ahead as it cuts a winding path of riffs deep into the heavy frontier with echoes of Zep III, Pompeiian Floyd, and Masters of Reality bouncing between mountains of Sleep and Yob doom boosted by heavy hooks, chiming intertwined guitars, expressive vocals, and surprising attacks of angular noise rock and dissonance. Get ready for a serious aural infliction in the form of Centuries' "Taedium Vitae," streaming in the player below today courtesy of Rocksound.tv.
The Florida-based wielders of ominous disgust and crust have this week released the debut LP on Southern Lord. The label also comments:
"Taedium Vitae is a relentless barrage of abrasive, blackened, emotive hardcore played with a strong sense of urgency as Centuries unload their most potent brew of dark hardcore surging with tragic melodies and an emotive angst-ridden vocal assault. Aspirations are methodically countered through rapidly executed and slowly shifting declines in pitch, implications of hopelessness are harnessed in the fantastic cyclical monotony of the d-beat and dry-throated vocals are placed around the riffs like a distorted transcript of a confession.
"Taedium Vitae blasts by under a consistently intense regime of percussive perdition, with moments of unique fascination - white noise nose dives, string-wrenching clamor and an all encompassing overcast mood, delivered through the medium of brimstone hardcore and the burnt flavor of dejected crust. The record was recorded with Kris Hillbert at Legitimate Business studios in Greensboro, North Carolina and is out now worldwide this week through Southern Lord." More...

Three years have passed since the release of Death Angel's crushing "Relentless Retribution" album - three years of constant touring and on-the-road-songwriting. Now the Bay Area veterans have returned with yet another visceral slice of thrash!
"The Dream Calls for Blood" was recorded at AudioHammer Studios with Jason Suecof and once again features cover art by Brent Elliot White. "The Dream Calls for Blood" will be released to the rabid masses on October 11th (Rest of Europe), October 14th (UK), and October 15th (North America).
"Rob contacted me early on about doing this cover," explains White. "He wanted a continuation of the work we did on 'Relentless Retribution.' Kind of a complimentary piece that featured the wolf in sheep’s clothing again, only this time in some sort of frozen environment. I love it, I guess he's come to be known as ‘Wolfie’. Perfect! As the concepts for the album grew, so did the details and various elements for the album cover.
"For example, It started as a single lone wolf, though Rob thought it important to add his pack. I guess they're somewhat symbolic of the band. The wolves look like they've come a long ways, I can relate. I don't want to try to dictate the meaning of the cover art. Suffice to say the main elements depicted in the piece are representational of the core thoughts and themes Rob poured into the album. Solar eclipse, lunar mirage, lighting from the coming storm, the killing field , blood, death, decay...those things. Though at times this one was a struggle (thanks for your patience with me DA, VJ and NB!) the album title actually pushed it to where it needed to be. I love the title, a perfect representation of the lyrics and Death Angel in general."
"Once again my metal brothers have put out an album that truly captures their live energy and originality as a band," commented Suecof. "Death Angel has not only maintained their classic thrash element, but they've taken every aspect of what they can do as musicians to the next level - writing, playing and maintaining an intense vibe throughout all the tracks! I believe this is an album that will stand the test of time - not just for Death Angel fans, but for fans of all genres of metal. Enjoy!" More...

Regarding the title of the new album, front man Nergal recently stated: "It took us over two decades to come up with a title that…says it all. While our new songs artistically take surprisingly adventurous directions, our message stands steadfast—Proud and Radical. Considering all our life experiences that often took dramatic curves I couldn't think of more appropriate and fitting statement of who and where we are now."

4.5 billion years in the making... Eat Lead and Die Music has announced the impending release of Monsterworks' "Earth," available on August 20th with digital distribution through the usual outlets on August 30th. The album will be offered as a special edition numbered digipak CD signed by the band, with lyric booklet and two bonus tracks. Vocalist/Guitarist Jon had this to say about the concepts surrounding the album:
"I am intrigued by evolution, not just of biological organisms but also how the physical world changes over time, so it was not that much of a stretch to consider doing an album themed around the life-cycle of Earth; beginning with its origin 'From Dust and Gravity' where a clumping together of rock and minerals left over from a supernova explosion formed a globe orbiting an infant star.
Each track progresses chronologically, from an early period called the 'Late Heavy Bombardment' which is thought to have delivered water and seeded chemical elements that developed into life and what was to be our 'Last Universal Ancestor.' Then we move onto a time where cyanobacteria started to photosynthesize and a process of 'Oxygenation' paved the way for more complex animals to evolve, 'Powered by Fate' as it were. Explosions of life, even when resulting in huge animals like dinosaurs, were often 'Bookended by Extinction' events that wiped the slate almost entirely clean until our chance came in the present 'Aeon of Man.'
Earth honors the seemingly miraculous yet naturally occurring planet on which we live. The title track is the only song that gets a little preachy about our responsibility as custodians of the environment; the rest is just a tale of the sequence of events that got us this far. So take from it philosophically what you will, Monsterworks primarily aims to produce metal which blurs the boundaries between preposterousness and the familiar while hopefully initiating a little independent thought along the way." Spanish hard rock bruisers '77 have debuted the first track off their upcoming third full-length album, "Maximum Rock n' Roll." The song, entitled "Down and Dirty," is streaming now below. '77 had the following to say regarding "Maximum Rock n' Roll":
"We obviously wrote music in typical '77 fashion such as 'Down and Dirty' or 'Stay Away from Water,' tunes that will make you bang your head and raise your fist in the air while singing the choruses. Once more we recorded live in the studio, supervised by Fred Estby this time behind the mics and mixing desk, and we are really happy with the sound we got: no tricks, no FX; just 'Maximum Rock and Roll' played as loud as possible."
The band has also unveiled the cover art, designed by urban artist and AC/DC enthusiast Abdul Vas, for "Maximum Rock n' Roll." Check it out after the tracklisting. More...
Irish thrashers Gama Bomb announced that the band is forced to drop off the planned tour of North America from August to September 2013 with Artillery, Bonded By Blood and Fueled By Fire. The reason: delays in securing visas.
"We’re really gutted to have to make this call, but we’ve found ourselves caught in a massive web of red tape and time’s run out to make the tour possible in the way we want it to be," said singer Philly Byrne.
"We’ve been faced with barriers and delays all for months now, and we held off on making this call, but ultimately we’re dealing with big organs of state where there’s no one person you can ring up and make it happen."
"Even worse than all the behind-the-scenes crap that’s gone on, letting our fans down is the hardest thing to stomach. If you bought a ticket for one of these cancelled shows, we’re coming back soon to make it up to you. We’re already working on making it happen."
Bassist Joe McGuigan commented: "We’ve done our best to make this tour happen but unfortunately this whole process is out of our hands. We want to apologize to our friends in Artillery, our brothers in Bonded By Blood, and most of all to all the US thrashers out there."
The tour is set to commence in San Diego on August 21st. More...
