Considering the huge potential for crossover between metal and gaming fans, it's always baffled me that there aren't more heavy metal focused video game soundtracks. Rather than going for sounds that make the player bang their heads and launch their controller through the television, most games – even highly action focused ones – tend to stick with more tepid ambient soundtracks based on electronica. Techno is about as “heavy” as most game soundtracks tend to get.
This week we're going to take a look at a handful of games that buck that trend and offer up honest-to-Lucifer extreme metal in their playlists. Not an exhaustive list (and we'll be looking at more in the future), this is just a few that are worth your time and are notable for their inclusion of tracks from excellent metal bands or for having original soundtracks rooted strongly in the metal tradition.
This one's a no-brainer, as it's essentially THE heavy metal video game, created solely to celebrate our beloved genre. Eddie may be a lowly roadie, but through the power of metal (and a battleax, wicked car, and some magic powers) he can annihilate the goths, please the gods, and get the girl (or two).
Although it seems like a gimmick to get heavy music fans interested, the gameplay is actually really solid and revolves around three different styles: strategy large-scale combat as a general over an army, open world GTA car driving shenanigans, and elements of combat-heavy action games like God of War or Dante's Inferno
The game features more than 100 metal tracks (some of which have to be unlocked in-game) covering a huge range of sub-genres with everything from In Flames to Cradle Of Filth, along with a whole lot of classics from the likes of Motorhead and Judas Priest.
The Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of History just posted a profile of Slayer and the origins of thrash as part of its "Places of Musical Innovation" exhibit. Check it out below.

Moribund Records announces today the signing of American black metal cult Cold Northern Vengeance, commenting:
"Cold Northern Vengeance started its quest for gnosis in the coldness of New Hampshire anno 2002. Patiently perfecting its craft, the band released a series of demos and splits throughout the first decade of the new millennium. This all culminated in the stirring debut album 'Domination and Servitude,' released in 2008 to critical acclaim by Bindrune Recordings.
"Throughout the course of time, founding vocalist/guitarist Heathen has worked with many artists, friends, fiends, enemies, psychopaths, and other assorted characters to solidify a uniquely steel-clad identity. And now, Cold Northern Vengeance is finalizing its second album (and debut for Moribund), 'Maelstrom.' The saga has been forged in blood, sweat, tears and too many beers: soon, Moribund Records will confirm the release date of 'Maelstrom,' as well as its cover and tracklisting." More...

Defect Designer has unleashed a “stellar” music video to promote the single "StarDust," taken off the "Ageing Accelerator" album that dropped via Sleaszy Rider Records in July.
The entirely instrumental track looms over the video, which allows viewers to trek the galaxy over guitar harmonies and shoegaze-esque drums. The video clocks in just under 3 minutes providing a symphonic piece paired with celestial imagery. Vocalist / guitarist Dmitry Sukhinin comments:
"It is always not easy to make a video for an instrumental song, so we wanted to make something very nice and not too complicated, with motion that fits the song's pace. This is a melodic side of the band, slow and easy-listening."
eOne Music duo Dark Sermon and Black Crown Initiate have announced support dates with Cattle Decapitation in September.

Today, the indefinable 'n' defiant O.S.I.R.I.S. reveals a haunting, tripped-out video for the track "Gold to Dust and to Gold Again."
The song hails from O.S.I.R.I.S.'s forthcoming second album, "The Conquest of Planet Death - Vol 2," to be released later this fall by Tyrannus Records. O.S.I.R.I.S. is the new project of Chilean musician Count Czar Yang, best known in the underground for his band Ammit.
Although Count Czar Yang pursues his visions with the same uncompromising intensity as he does in Ammit, O.S.I.R.I.S. belongs to a new musical concept fueled by the influence of metal-deviant bands like Abruptum and Goatlord, classic krautrock like Popol Vuh, and a strong bond to classical music, specifically of the contemporary and atonal variety. Set to kick off their headlining North American tour this week with country mates Omnium Gatherum, Finnish melodic death metal act Insomnium has announced a live replacement for vocalist/bassist Niilo Sevanen, who was forced off the tour due to a family emergency. The band previously announced a replacement for guitarist Ville Friman in the form of Sanctuary's Nick Cordle.
The band posted: "Dear fans, last Saturday we got unexpected phone call while driving to Gothoom Festival in Slovakia. Unfortunately, serious illness had taken place in Niilo's close family. We all felt devastated but somehow we were still able to pull through the show. However, due to these unpredicted circumstances, there was no way Niilo could have been able to leave his family behind and attend the upcoming US tour. Family is the most important thing and always comes first.
"We were left with two equally bad options. To cancel the tour altogether or to go and try to find replacement for Niilo in couple of days notice. We had already invested considerable amount of money on this tour and whole tour personnel had made commitments to take time off from other work to do this tour. At the same time we felt really bad about thinking about financial side of things while one of our best friends was going through terrible family tragedy. After series of emergency meetings we decided to go and look if there would be anyone that could help us out. All things considered, 50% original line up would be better than no line up at all. We also did not want to let down all the people who had already bought the tickets. Most importantly, we did not want to give up.
"So we went and wrote to all our friends on the state side and asked if anybody knew anyone. The response and the number of people who wanted to help us out overwhelmed us. Several talented individuals were ready to step in with short notice. We are eternally grateful and humbled by this response and it only shows how dedicated and compassionate people in US metal scene are. After numerous encounters we came across Mike Bear (ARTISAN, PROTOTYPE) who will be handling growling and bass duties on this tour." More...

Asked for his take on the controversy surrounding this year's edition of "Mayhem festival" Slayer's Gary Holt told the San Antonio Metal Music Examiner:
"Things were said in the media that were spun wrong and attributed to Kerry quoting me, which I didn't say, and Kerry says he never said it. Like, you know, criticizing the Victory Records stage, and some of my close young compadres are on that stage Shattered Sun, Texas natives. And they know it. You know, these guys, I do everything I can do to help them. Ask Daniel Trejo (Shattered Sun guitarist). He comes to me when he wants information and advice on endorsements, and I'm totally willing to give it. The attendance has been down. And the only thing I ever actually did say was what this tour is lacking is a genuine second stage. There's usually a record label-sponsored stage, a second and a third and a main stage. And what you have is the main stage, and then there… this time it's the Victory Records stage. The last time I did Mayhem, it was the Sumerian Records stage. Those bands are all young up-and-comers and they're awesome; we've hung out and barbecued, amongst other cannabis-related things. And then, you know, for bad blood to be started because one guy (referring to Kevin Lyman's commentabout metal becoming fat and grey) decided to throw the tour under the bus early into it, it's, like… We're all out here, working out hardest to put on the best show we can. And those guys, they're young. They're out here, you know… Like any young band, you're working for nothing. You're working to further your band's cause and to spread your name."
"And then, I can understand, people all the way up to us started feeling, like, 'What are we doing? Are we not appreciated?' And I know I can speak for Paul, we appreciate these younger bands. I mean, hell, my other band, we're still a club band. I'm more likely to go out on tour with Exodus and these younger bands on the Victory Records stage than anybody else. And if you ask any young band that's ever toured with Exodus, we treat 'em not like an opening band. We kidnap 'em, put 'em on a bus, make 'em drink vile shit and take care of 'em. But other than that, and a couple of shows which have been pretty grim, the tour's been great and I'm having hella fun. That being said, I'm glad it's almost winding down, 'cause I'm 51 fucking years old."
