Ron Kuczuk, guitarist for Connecticut's Bonded Through Hate has reportedly passed away from pancreatic cancer. Kuczuk had been dealing with a staph infection in 2012 which led to the loss of his leg. In the last year, as he fought through those issues, he was admitted to the hospital for stomach pains from fluid buildup and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Kuczuk also played on the 1993 Tyrant Tooper demo "Moral Extinction" and full length LP "Insance Sickness," as well as with death metal act Slumlord. Bonded Through Hate released its debut EP "Doomsday: The Rise of Valhalla" last year via Ear One Records.
The band has not yet issued an official statement, however, a post on the fallen guitarist's Facebook wall came from former Tyrant Trooper bandmate Rick Brayall, and reads as follows:
"It is with an extremely heavy heart that I have to inform everyone that my bandmate, my friend, and my brother, Ron Kuczuk, has passed away. I know most of you will find this extremely shocking as did I. As most of you know Ron had been dealing with issues stemming from a staph infection last year which left him with the loss of his leg. Several setbacks had knocked him down in the last year and a half but did not knock him out. He was fighting all of his issues like we would all expect him to, like a Trooper. He was always very private with his issues and never wanted to worry anyone. Recently he was admitted into the hospital with stomach pains and fluid buildup in the belly. After running tests it was discovered that his issues were being caused by pancreatic cancer. He was found to be in advanced stages and the outlook was not very good. He was still willing to fight but unfortunately it already was really too late. Ron passed early this morning peacefully and with no pain. Arrangements are expected to be on Saturday 8/31 in Planstville but I will update everyone when all of the details have been worked out. The family would also welcome everyone to leave kind words, or any stories and memories on his page. More...
For today's Pit Story, Boston hardcore punk outfit Gang Green goes way back in time to the mid-80s to tell the following tale of the band's vocalist passing out drunk half an hour before a show:
In Long Beach, California in 1985, the teenagers of Gang Green were on their first national tour. With a just a couple 7” singles released, each show was generally unpredictable for this new up and coming band outside major cities. After the van breaking down 1 hour out of Los Angeles, the band was slightly on edge and out of money when we finally arrived into California, though happy that we had finally made it to our main destination.
We were all pleasantly surprised to see some of our punk rock idols from The Circle Jerks attending the show. I guess Chris, our singer, decided he was going to impress some these guys with some good old excessive drinking! Something he was getting very good at after 20 days on the road with 5 or 6 smelly guys in a van. Actually, he drank so much that night he was vomiting outside the venue and eventually passed out in a grassy area. Holy shit! Here we are in California ready to play in front of kids who are actually looking forward to seeing us play and Chris is passed out with 30 minutes left until set time.
After forcing him to wake up, we were all relieved when he made it to the stage and made it through most of set without falling on his face. This show is documented in the live photograph of Gang Green displayed on the inside panel of the CD, Drop The Needle: Boston Punk Anthology.
The new compilation "Drop the Needle: Boston Punk Anthology" is due out October 1st, 2013 and features tracks by Gang Green, Smegma and the Nunz, Celebrity Death Certificate, Scratch, and Mallet Head. Full details are available at this location. More...

"We had 3 cannons literally shooting flames 30 ft into the air and about 50 burning logs all around us. The entire fire department was there watching the whole thing with hoses ready, not to mention they had a medi-vac helicopter on call in case anyone was severely injured. I did actually light my arm on fire, it was the coolest (and the hottest) moment of my life. We were about 45 minutes from Houston in the middle of absolutely nowhere and filmed until 5am. We party." After releasing "The Living Infinite" (reviewed here), Soilwork has announced a lavish deluxe version of the 2001 break-through album "A Predator's Portrait," due out on October 18th (EU) / October 15th (US).
The album will be re-issued as a digipack with all new artwork and will contain 2 previously unreleased live bonus tracks. Commented drummer Dirk Verbeuren:
"I view 'A Predator’s Portrait' as a milestone in several ways. It’s our first recording for Nuclear Blast, still our home to this day, six albums later. It marks the first time Björn 'Speed' Strid pushes his vocal talents into the melodic realm. And it concludes the early Soilwork years, with follow-up »Natural Born Chaos« starting something new and different altogether. Now that we’ve come full circle with our ninth album 'The Living Infinite 'the time is right to revisit 'A Predator’s Portrait.'
"This ultimate re-release comes with re-imagined artwork by original cover artist and Soilwork keyboardist Carlos Del Olmo Holmberg as well as two live renditions of classic 'APP' tracks performed by the band’s current line-up during the 2013 North American Infinity tour. Enjoy this piece of Pure Swedish Melodic Mayhem!“ More...
Sepultura's new album "The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart" is set for European release on October 25th via Nuclear Blast.
The artwork was created by Brazilian artist Alexandre Wagner, who specializes in charcoal drawing techniques. The band has now revealed the track listing, which is available after the jump.
In preparing the statements below, Sepultura guitarist Andreas Kisser & artist Alexandre Wagner collaborated with Brazilian journalist Emanuel Leite, Jr. to gather their thoughts. Here, Kisser reveals how he discovered the work of Alexandre Wagner:
"It was an indication of Silvio Bibika, who was my roadie for a long time. He always shows me things in general that Sepultura might need. He told me about Alexandre - who is from Belo Horizonte [in Brazil, where Sepultura was founded] - a year ago. So before we went to the United States to record the album, I was at his house to talk about the cover, tell him the album title, and talk about the concept of the film Metropolis so he could do something original. But when I saw the picture with the drawing, I thought it was all about what we wanted and we did not need something new. I also asked him to do a tribal ‘S’ in the cover’s style, which will be on the back cover."
Album artist Alexandre Wagner comments on his creation: "This series of work in charcoal drawing [for the album] I did when I still lived in Belo Horizonte. They were all made there and are quick drawings without much reference, almost an experimentation that may have come from a desire to use the most basic of basic materials - coal, paper and wood. The cover design was ready, Andreas saw and liked it. We talked a little more and I also sent some other pictures for the booklet. I was pleased with the choice of the theme of the album; I like [Austrian filmmaker] Fritz Lang very much and not to mention only Metropolis, but Dr. Mabuse der Spieler [Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler, Lang’s 1922 film] is a fucking movie!" Thrash act Hirax is about to release new studio album "Immortal Legacy." Singer and mastermind Katon W. De Pena says:
"We recorded the new album with legendary producer Bill Metoyer (Slayer, W.A.S.P., Armored Saint, Cirith Ungol and many others). This is our most epic sounding record to date, sonically powerful and over-the-top. 14 new raging thrash metal songs that will make you bang your head!!!"
Philip Lawvere, the artist behind such classic album covers as Kreator's "Pleasure to Kill" and Celtic Frost's "Emperor's Return" has designed the new Hirax "Immortal Legacy" album. Hirax's front man commented: "We couldn't be happier to have Philip Lawvere illustrating the cover of our new album; after getting Bill Metoyer to produce it, this is truly the icing on the thrash metal cake!"
The album will be released in Germany on October 25th, in Europe on October 28th, and in the US/Canada on October 22nd worldwide through SPV/Steamhammer as a CD, gatefold coloured LP, and download. The track listing is: More...
Belgian act Resurrection has checked in with the following announcement about recruiting a new guitar player:
"Due to personal reasons, Tom is no longer a part of Resurrection. It has been a good five years and we want to thank him for all the times we had together, but now it's time to move on.
"As a result we're stoked to announce that our good friend Fréderic Roekens has joined the band as our new guitarist. We look forward to working with him and are excited for what the future will bring!" More...
American folk metallers Winterhymn will release new single "Huntsman" on September 9th, 2013. "Huntsman" is the first track to feature new lead guitarist Varrik (Elimination, Imperial Vengeance), drummer Valthrun (Schallkrieg), and bassist and vocalist Alvadar (Schallkrieg), since former members Ulfr, Sieven, and Warg departed at the beginning of 2013.
"If you compare the material from Songs for the Slain to ‘Huntsman’ it is easy to hear both the influence of the new members as well as a natural maturation of the band," comments guitarist/vocalist Draug. "One of the goals we set after SFTS was to create a greater sense of cohesion between the folk and metal elements of the music. We wanted the violin and keys to feel just as natural in the mix as the more traditional instruments, complimenting each other rather than one supporting the other, and they definitely do in ‘Hunstman,’ both thanks to the songwriting and Kevin Brown’s mixing. The finished product is more intricate and thoughtful, while at the same time more aggressive and driving. It’s a great example of the general direction for the next album.”
"Huntsman" also marks a new lyrical direction for the band, adds Draug. “While we’re still generally suckers for Norse mythology, we’re abandoning the viking themes in favor of a fantasy of our own creation. At the end of the day, we want to tell stories, and decided that a world of our own creation would hold the fewest barriers. Drathna, the main subject of ‘Huntsman,’ is just one of the characters who will appear in the next album, which is shaping up to be a loose concept album.”
Look for “Huntsman” as a name-your-price download on Bandcamp here this coming September 9th, 2013.

Opeth mainman Mikael Åkerfeldt has been chosen to curate Roadburn Festival 2014 on Friday, April 11th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands.
Opeth will headline the show, and all other bands will be personally selected by Mikael. Previous Roadburn curators have included Neurosis, Tom G. Warrior of Celtic Frost/Triptykon, Sunn O))), Voivod, and Jus Oborn of Electric Wizard.
Says Mikael, "It's with great honour that I accepted the invitation to be the curator for the 2014 Roadburn festival. I'm pretty damn far from being a professional booker/promoter, and I've never been part in choosing bands for an event apart from bands that Opeth has toured with. So this is a first for me, but I have to say I'm very excited.
"I've reached out to a handful of my favourite bands from the past and present. As of now it looks like it will be an amazing musical event. Still brainstorming about possible bands for this glorious festival but I already know that I'm going to be like a kid at Christmas. It will be amazing! Plain and simple. Obviously Opeth will perform as well, but to be quite honest with you, our own performance doesn't get me nearly as excited as the thought of experiencing the bands that have shown interest. It will be remarkable and memorable. A celebration, bitches!" More...

The new album of Scottish death/grind powerhouse Man Must Die will be entitled "Peace Was Never An Option." the album will be released on October 28th in Europe and a day later in North America and contains a guest appearance by Max Cavalera. The band comments:
"This album is by far the angriest yet most diverse one we have done yet, its the next level for Man Must Die, we couldn't be happier with how its turned out, its brutal beyond the word and yet more melodic and memorable than ever. With 'Peace was Never An Option' we really focused on the song writing which is really important in MMD's sound, seems to be bypassed a lot in modern music. All the classic metal is all about the songs, this is what influences us, this is what we do."
The Scottish band is known for having rigorous titles that express the essence of the releases and the underlying attitude in short. Following “...Start Killing” (2004) and the two Relapse albums “The Human Condition” (2007) and “No Tolerance For Imperfection,” Man Must Die's fourth effort will be its Lifeforce debut. More...

As was recently announced, Candlelight Records has confirmed October 22nd as the North American release date for "Das Seelenbrechen," the fifth solo album from Ihsahn, and follow-up to last year's "Eremita" (reviewed here).
Das Seelenbrechen will be available on compact disc, a limited edition digibook (with expanded graphics and liner notes), and double 180-gram clear vinyl. Pre-orders are set to launch via online and physical retail outlets beginning September 10th. The following press release was issued about the album:
"Das Seelenbrechen is a bold and adventurous recording that is a musical contrast to the progressive shades and saxophone augmentations of the former Emperor vocalist/guitarist's previous two albums (2009's After and 2011's Eremita). The recording exists in an entirely unfamiliar sonic world as Ihsahn draws upon his most esoteric influences, fully embracing the spirit of the avant-garde. Comprising ten vivid but disparate explorations in sound that range from bittersweet electronica to deranged and feral improvisation, Das Seelenbrechen is every bit as dark and destructive as the artist's previous work but is far more disorientating and disturbing than anything he has attempted in his past."
Ihsahn himself states: "Musically, this album is a very deliberate sidestep to what I have been doing; a necessity to reset the creative parameters so not to fall into formula. I think I do my best work slightly outside of my comfort zone and I've wanted to do something like this for a long time. Free form and improvisational can be scary for a musician but it is very liberating at the same time."
Recorded at his own studio in Norway in collaboration with drummer Tobias Ornes Anderson (Leprous), "Das Seelenbrechen" eschews traditional metal instrumentation in favor of a limitless textural landscape that evokes the freewheeling spirit of artists like Diamanda Galas, Scott Walker, and John Zorn.
In discussing the album, Ihsahn notes, "even though my music has changed over the years, I feel there is a source of inspiration at the bottom of it all that is constant. The general idea for this album was to try and dig deep into this raw source and express it without too much refinery and do so within a less familiar musical landscape. It is the reason for several purely improvised songs and parts on this album. I spontaneously performed with just lyrics and the idea of the atmosphere I was wishing to create. While many will feel it sounds different, I don't think it is necessarily different from my previous album. And in my head, it will fit in perfectly with my plans for the sixth album." More...

"Fire Eater" is described as powerful with lots of drive and passion, as with the band's former releases. Melodic and straight heavy metal with a typical ASKA sound, George’s distinctive, rough and high power-voice, perfectly placed high-pitched screams, and some classic Maiden-Twin-leads: everything that a metal fan might wish for can be found on this newest release.
The track list for "Fire Eater" is:
1. Everyone Dies
2. Dead Again
4. Son Of A God
6. Harlot Of Eden
7. Red Cell
8. The Ripper (Judas Priest Cover)
9. Year Of Jubilee
10. The Last Message
11. Eye Of The Serpent More...
