Soulfly Enthralls The Bristol Tribe

With a new album, "Ritual" just around the corner, Max Cavalera and his cohorts are very busy preparing to unleash the record and nothing gets fans pumped for a new live album like a blistering live performance. This is just what fans were treated to in Bristol last week at the intimate Fleece venue just outside the city centre.

Opting to use local support throughout their tour of the United Kingdom, they were joined on their final night in Britain by BOE (Beginning Of Extinction.) BOE perform a brand of music best described as early 2000s nu metal, reminiscent of bands like Drowning Pool, Saliva and to a lesser extent Coal Chamber. It's a little difficult to report on the performance of a local band because it's hard to tell how much of those cheering are friends of the band to begin with, but as someone who doesn't know the band but enjoys some the aforementioned bands, I can say that they were unremarkable, but by no means terrible. There's nothing to get excited about and their second vocalist contributes as much to the music as Bez from the Happy Mondays, but as a whole, they're fine. BOE clearly strikes a chord with some people, but there was also plenty of others hanging out in the smoking area. All in all, check them out if you miss the sound of fifteen years ago and judge for yourself. More...

Helloween Announces New Studio And Live Albums

German power metal legends Helloween has announced that they will be releasing a live CD/DVD package of their recent "Pumpkins United" tour next year, with a new studio album to follow in 2020. An update from the group reads thusly:

"A very special summer season, not only due to the tropical heat, is slowly coming to an end: Festivals have been rocked so hard that we would’ve been sweating even if mercury hadn’t been on a permanent high. Among the massive Pumpkins United World Tour’s open air highlights were, of course, the headline slots at Wacken, Barcelona’s Rock Fest and Masters of Rock – but also the mega gigs with Iron Maiden at Sweden Rock Festival and Florence’s Firenze Rocks in June were definitely shows we’ll remember for all eternity. Thanks to everyone who has been with us until now!

"Fortunately the tour is by no means over, and dates in the US and Canada are next on the schedule – there will also be, due to the tremendous demand, additional dates in Latin America to follow: And as first class support, no other than Kreator and Arch Enemy will be firing up the stages for the Pumpkins! Final shows with the full United cast will take place at the end of 2018 with a right royal farewell blast: In Hamburg, right where all the madness started in 1984, Pumpkins United will burn down the house with the tour’s last show in the legendary Sporthalle on December 22nd.

"For those, who mysteriously missed the tour – but also for everyone, who has been a part of it and would love to revisit those unique nights, the boys have recorded the very best moments. Goose bump inducing footage of the Pumpkins United world tour, which has been reveled as “tour of the year” by fans and press everywhere, will be released as a live CD as well as on DVD and Blu-ray at the beginning of 2019, so that those nights can be celebrated over and over without even having to leave the sofa.

"As we are reeling from Wacken and preparing for the upcoming show in Bamberg, those maniacs are already launching the next sensation: For starters, Nuclear Blast has insisted to keep the band on their roster for a few more years, and – double bass drum roll – there will be a brand-new studio album with Kiske and Hansen. With the band’s songwriting trio of Weikath, Hansen and Deris retreating to the studio together with these two exceptional singers in 2019, it’s clear that the album scheduled for 2020 will be no less than epic."

Mantar Posts New Song Online

Monstrous black/doom/punk chimaera Mantar have released a brand new song called "Taurus."
The song comes off the band's new album, "The Modern Art Of Setting Ablaze," which is set to be unleashed on August 24, 2018 via Nuclear Blast. You can check it out below.

"The Modern Art Of Setting Ablaze" is in-keeping with Mantar's symbolic obsession with fire on their previous albums; this time disavowing mankind‘s tendency to blindly follow those that would lead us into oblivion. This isn‘t necessarily a political statement; more a morbid fascination with current smouldering tensions that threaten to set the minds of the masses on fire. More...

Behemoth Frontman Explains Latest Video

In a recent interview with Headbanger's Lifestyle at the Alcatraz Festival in Belgium, Behemoth frontman Adam "Nergal" Darski commented on the band's latest video, "God = Dog" and explained some of the philosophy behind the song. You can watch the full interview below, along with some transcriptions which read as follows:

"Well, it's a very complex process, because it started with us making this photo session that was very religious-inspired — like religious topics, classic paintings from Caravaggio, Memling and others. We are actors in this… Basically, the whole booklet looks like that — it's all paintings, but they are reinterpreted by us. Pretty literal, so if I'm a crucified Jesus, I'm a crucified Jesus; I'm not Jesus with a dick out. It's not obnoxious in any way — it's very literal, it's very direct. And I think it's beautiful; it's aesthetically really stunning. Then we brought elements of that to that video, and we made it what it is."

Nergal elaborated further: "'God = Dog' is… There's some controversy about the title, but what can I say? From simple… Just inverse 'god' and it gives you 'dog,' and that's the most simplest way to explain the title, but, obviously, it goes deeper than this. It refers to Aleister Crowley's philosophy, and there's a quote from Book Of The Law which goes like that: 'Is a God to live in a dog? No! But the highest are of us.' And that's a part of it — it's a section of the song. And then again, go into the lyrics, make up your mind and build your own world there, because I don't wanna fucking spoil it." More...

Blessthefall Drummer Announces Upcoming Exit

Co-founding Blessthefall drummer Matt Traynor announced he is going to step down from the group. He made the below statement regarding his decision this past weekend:

“After much time and consideration, I have come to the personal decision to end my time with blessthefall. The Hard Feeling US tour will be my last.

Making the choice to step away from something that I have been a part of since its origin has been bittersweet. I was “living the dream” for twelve plus years, but now that I have a family, I’ve realized that my dream has changed.

I’m so proud to see how far BTF has gone and all the experiences I’ve had. I’ll never forget them.

I’d like to thank Beau, Jared, Eric, Elliott, Craig, Mike, Miles, Dave, our management, record labels, my sponsors, all of our crew members- who have been brothers/sisters to me and have shaped me to be who I am today. And of course my wife and family for juggling life around a touring schedule for so long. I’ll forever be grateful.

Lastly, I would like to thank every one of you, who over the years have supported me and this band. BTF would not have been able to withstand the test of time without such an amazing fan base. I hope to see as many of you as possible on my last tour and end my run with a bang!

Public Celebration To Be Held For Jill Janus

A public celebration of life will be held at the Rainbow Bar & Grill this Friday, August 24th for late Huntress singer Jill Janus this week in West Hollywood, CA. Comments Huntress‘ Black Meahl, who was also romantically linked with Janus:

“Since Jill‘s departure, the amount of outreach and support from friends, fans and family has been absolutely incredible. It has been beyond heavy to see so many reminders of how she could be so talented and loved yet could feel so much pain and loneliness.

Let’s get together and celebrate her life and the importance that we still have each other. Expect a lot of whiskey and grown men crying.

Thank you Rafael & Roberto Mattey for the amazing artwork.”

Janus sadly took her own life at the age of 43 past Tuesday, August 14th.
