Interview

Dirge Within Talks New Album And Oral Lovin'

Chicago's Dirge Within is hungry to take the metal scene by storm, getting its music out there to as many people as possible across every conceivable platform. The band's latest assault comes in the now released form of "There Will Be Blood," which is the follow-up to "Force Fed Lies" (reviewed here).

With the album out Dirge Within had planned to spend the summer touring with the Shockwave festival, until the unfortunate last minute cancellation of the run. With some extra time now on the band's hands, I caught up with guitarist Shaun Glass to find out what's going on in the Dirge Within camp.

Our full interview is available below, in which he discusses the ill-fated Shockwave Tour, getting songs on the Rock Band Network, the recent Randy Blythe debacle, and witnessing two fans going at each other during a live show. More...

Reign Of The Architect Splits With Drummer

Reign of the Architect has checked in with the following announcement about splitting with the band's drummer:

"With heavy hearts we inform you that our drummer and family member, Mauricio Bustamante, is no longer a part of Reign of the Architect. Various reasons led Mauricio and the ROTA family to set sail on different paths and as Mauricio embarks on a new way, we wish him all the best of luck in this new journey and he will always be a part from our family. We, Reign of the Architect, will continue our journey, stay tuned - the rolling thunder is headed your way."

Mauricio also issued the following statement:

"Dear followers, friends, brothers and family that have been with me during this 5 years with Reign of the Architect: Allow me to announce that the shadow of time has reached me in this band, so I will stop walking in it. There are many reasons that have led me to take this decision, but in the end the most important is to create other horizons. There is no doubt that it has been one of the most important decisions I have made in my life, and in order to give birth to new things in my soul, this path had to finish. I am currently working on new dreams and new trails. It is quite hard to walk on thin ice when you have a solid ground. In conclusion, it’s all summarized in the name of our album…'RISE.'

"From the bottom of my heart I want to thank the musicians who welcomed my dream of Reign of the Architect, and with whom I worked throughout this 5 years, such as: Mike LePond, Jonas Hörnqvist, Gus Mosanto, Kyle Honea, Joost Van Den Broek and Yuval Kramer. I leave a piece of my heart in Reign of the Architect, and I take other with me. Thank you for all the moments; laughter, tears, silences and the distant similarities that we found in these years, perhaps a new encounter awaits us.

"I will be posting on my personal page here all the news about what is coming next. I hope to see you all in this new dream page. Until next time. Here, there, wherever…"

Commented vocalist, Jesse KFW Jones, “American Oblivion was a collaboration between guitarist, Steve Karp, and I dealing with how post 9/11 paranoia has become institutionalized in people's lives, and how our civil liberties are being continually striped away. The result is that America is quickly becoming a country more focused on fear than on freedom.”

Meldrum To Release New Single

"Blackened Blue," the second single from the multinational hard rock/metal band Meldrum, will be released this coming Tuesday, August 31st. 'Blackened Blue' is the second single from Meldrum's third album 'Lifer,' due out this fall. 'Lifer' was produced by producer/engineer Rob Shallcross (Strapping Young Lad, GWAR, Zimmers Hole, West of Hell) and Gene Hoglan (Testament, Dethklok, Death, Dark Angel). You can also listen to the previous single "A Toast to Romance" at this location.

Meldrum guitarist Laura Christine (Warface, Meldrum, Dreaming Dead) comments on working with the late Michelle Meldrum:

'For me, Michelle was a kindred spirit, a lifer, a life changer. She was so incredibly fun and easy to hang out with. This woman had the most brilliant sense of humor and was the living ideal of a true Bad Ass. When shit was not running smooth, she had such an incredible ability to make everything feel cool. Being in a band with Michelle brought me back to a place of fun and spontaneity in writing and music that I had not felt in a long time. This was huge for me. I didn't even know I was lacking in these areas until working with Michelle. Witnessing her sharp, fun, easy, flowing attitude in regard to music, lit a fire of creativity under my ass.

"I remember driving home after our first writing session feeling stunned and super excited. I had never had that much fun with a writing partner or in a writing session ever. As far as ideal bandmates go, Michelle set the bar the highest I've ever seen. It was one of my greatest honors to know Michelle, as well as work on, record and help complete this album in remembrance and in tribute to her, my hero." More...

Becoming The Archetype Announces "I Am" Details

Atlanta, Georgia's Becoming the Archetype is returning with "I Am," due to drop September 18th on longtime label Solid State Records. Becoming the Archetype's publicist issued the following press release about the album:

"The band’s fifth full-length is baffling first and foremost because it’s not meant to be baffling. As guitarist, mastermind and band nucleus Seth Hecox explains, the album is less about reinventing heavy music than it is reinventing Becoming the Archetype. That’s not to say listeners won’t find the band doing its usual mind-warping and genre-bending, but the point of this album wasn’t to transcend the artform of metal music, it was to master it."

“I Am is 100% head banging riffs,” Hecox says. “Gone are the sitars and horns of Celestial Completion. Instead, we've crafted an album full of the heaviest and most technical songs we've ever written.”

Hecox and the Archetype boys are inviting fans to sample the new track “The Time Bender.” The catch? Listeners will have to settle for only a taste at first, but can unlock the remainder of the song by spreading the word for others to listen. Listen to help unlock "The Time Bender" at this location. Abigail Williams Plays Last Austin Show

Normally, we find Abigail William’s name in smaller font than the other acts listed on their flyer promoting a North American jaunt. This tour, however, features the group going solo on a headlining North American tour. After nearly a decade of supporting the world’s best extreme metal acts, it’s only proper that Candlelight Record’s most prolific artist becomes the featured act at each stop, especially considering this is their last tour.

One of the reasons for their disbanding is an inability to keep band members. Abigail Williams once led a cast of five members, including ex-Cradle of Filth keyboardist Ashley "Ellyllon" Jurgemeyer. Founding member Ken Sorceron came to town this time as a stripped down three-piece. The group used a synthesizer to replicate cinematic moments. This small lineup was perfect for Beerland’s small stage. It’s dark and narrowed halls were also fit the small audience well. More...

The Gardnerz Streaming New Song

AxisOfMetal.com has teamed with Abyss Records and Swedish death/doom metal outfit The Gardnerz to debut a brand new track off the band's forthcoming mini-album, "It All Fades." The track, entitled "Don't Look Back," is being called a 'a seven-minute doomy-death attack which will punish your psyche...' by Axis Of Metal. Members of The Gardnerz had the following to say about the song: "We have chosen the song 'Don't Look Back' to be the first song out of this new recording to be available to the public eye (or ear in this case) because it sets a good tone for the rest of the mini album," said Bassist Francisco Martín.

"This time around the songs are a bit slower and darker than on 'The System Of Nature' (the band's debut). We tried to continue on the path we have chosen. We have found our niche and have no reason to stray, so if you liked our first release you will like 'It All Fades' as well. This time it was a bit more of a group effort and I think that made the songs stronger," added guitarist Wilhelm Lindh.
