"Asylum," the latest album from Chicago hard rockers Disturbed, is set to hit stores at the end of the month. In anticipation of the new release, the band has already launched a new music video for the song "Another Way to Die," and also just kicked off a North American tour. Prior to the start of the tour, Disturbed vocalist David Draiman checked in with Metalunderground to discuss the new album.
Commenting on the direction of the album, Draiman stated "There’s heightened levels of complexity and precision and it kind of showcases the abilities that we’ve learned over 10 years of songwriting and touring. It’s definitely everything that fans would expect from the band and a few things that they wouldn’t with a new level of maturation that I think is very evident over the course of the entire record." David also discusses the lyrical themes of "Asylum," extra songs from the recording session that will show up later, working with Todd McFarlane on previous ventures, and the infamous Richard Cheese rendition of the "Down With The Sickness" track. Anti-religious metal outfit Noctis Imperium alongside Abyss Records have set August 17th as the release date for the band's upcoming EP, entitled "Nihil." The band is currently streaming a selection of tracks featured in "Nihil" at the official Noctis Imperium MySpace page.
Songwriter/vocalist Isaias "Aeneas" Guilarte comments: "Unus in nihil is a re-recording of an older track, updated with new lyrics and arrangements that fit the evolution Noctis Imperium has gone through the years. It was also what triggered the decision to release Nihil, which we feel it's a good sample of what's to come. This old-new track reflects where we're heading to as a band and the atheistic message we're embracing."
The EP contains songs from the band's upcoming full-length, "The Age Of The Golden Dawn," plus a handful of unreleased and live tracks recorded over the course of 2009. Unofficial footage from Noctis Imperium's first show in Madrid performing a cover of Morbid Angel's "Maze of Torment" can be seen below. More...

Portugal's Ava Inferi has checked in with the following update about working on a new album:
"These past times has been somewhat silent on these shores. No, or few updates has been uttered and well, doing things 'undercover' has seemed like the fitting way to move forward this time. And mind you, things have been going swell. We are happy to finally announce that the fundamentals (meaning drums, bass and guitars) for 8 brand new Ava Inferi trademark songs have been emanated and recorded in TopRoom Studio, Norway this past weeks. The vocals and additional adds will be taken care of here in Portugal in near future.
"The album, scheduled for a early 2011 release (on the one and only Season Of Mist), has actually been ready for a while, at least in terms of compositions. But instead of doing the usual 'rush' we have now used time to our advantage, ensuring nothing slips our attention. I actually remember I made the first riff for 'By Candlelight & Mirrors,' one of the new songs, already back in March last year, giving the song more than a year to mature into what we feel is optimal. It might be a cliché to proclaim this these days, but we truly feel that this material is by far the most interesting and mature we have produced so far. And easily the most raw material as well. Its somewhat typical Ava Inferi, as I really believe we have our own brand of Gothic Doom by now, but it definitely has a few changes to it.
"The songs are more straight forward, some of them a tad shorter than whats expected from these shores (set aside 'The Heathen Island' which closes inn at approx 10 minutes), some downright spooky and dirty, others immeasurably dark even strangely beautiful, but most importantly, they all ooze of an all-consuming power. We really believe that with this album we have created the ultimate Ava Inferi record so far! More...
Crown the Lost has issued the following update about the band's upcoming third album:
"Hey hey, album #3 (otherwise known as Cold Pestilent Hope) is completed. We started work on it in March of this year and were lucky enough to take our good 'ole time on it (which we did) and suffice it to say, we're quite pleased with how it turned out.
"We'll be posting a new song (or two) in the near future. Artwork and release date will be announced at some point down the road as well. For now, here's a preview of the 10-second variety. Enjoy."
Germany's Defeated Sanity has issued the following brief announcement about performing at the 2011 edition of the Maryland Death Fest: "Maryland Deathfest 2011 confirmed. Destroyer 666 has issued the following statement about being forced to cancel shows at the beginning of the band's current tour:
"Well, things are on track again, and the missed shows have been rebooked for the end of the tour as far as I know. Best check your local promoter as I've come to believe nothing and no one on this tour. Sadly, and I guess predictably, the gossiping retards that infest this planet have come to their own deranged ideas as to why we could not play.
"Its infuriating, but eventually laughable at just how gullible and stupid people can be. The truth of the matter is our driver who was supposed to turn up at 10am turned up at midnight. Plain, simple, mundane and,yes very annoying. Totally beyond our control. The first few days of this tour were some of the most agonizingly mismanaged Ive ever had the misfortune to be forced to be put thru.
"We've all been to shows that have been canceled, and its not great. Not as bad as a loved one getting gang raped by 13 Dobbermans, but not great no. And believe me, much worse for us. The amount of money we had to pay for this clusterfuck of a tour goes into the 1000s of EUROS. So our condolences to those who lost some petty cash and those who traveled some distance for the show. But there was simply nothing we could do about it. More...

"Anton's has been a friend to Inner Sanctvm since the days that the band was recording their debut 'Frozen Souls' in Chile, 1993, and since then Anton has been some way or another sharing stage with his band Criminal, keeping in contact, praising the band, etc, so this new union doesn't come as something unexpected.
"Anton's credits includes being the driving force behind the Death Metal Legend Pentagram, a band that has been quoted/covered by bands such as Napalm Death, Dismember, At The Gates, Unanimated, Entombed, Avulsed, Pentacle, Death Breath and a loooong etc, and nowadays he's writing stuff for a forthcoming studio recording with Pentagram. Kingdom Of Sorrow has announced that founding member Kirk Windstein, who is also a founding member of Crowbar and Down, will not be taking part in the band's upcoming tour dates due to health issues. In his place will be Type O Negative guitarist Kenny Kickey.
Kirk Windstein states: "Hey all, Kirk here. Just wanted to let everyone know that I will be taking a much needed break and will not be joining my bros in KOS for Ozzfest. I have entered the AA program and am turning over a new leaf. 25 years of gigging and touring has taken its toll and my drinking is now preventing me from being the healthiest, best player that I can be. It’s been a fun ride, but I’m ready to tackle this sober and look forward to being at the top of my game with all of my projects! I am happy to say that Kenny Hickey will once again be filling my spot for these 8 shows. Thanks Kenny, I love you bro!!! Thanks to everyone for their support. All my best, Kirk Windstein."
Jamey Jasta adds: "The road is no place for Kirk right now. He has begun to address his problems so he can lead a happy and healthy life and continue to rock with Down, CROWBAR and Kingdom Of Sorrow. I only want the best for him and I feel like sitting this tour out is a step in the right path."
Vocalist Roberto Lizárraga of Mexican death metal act Infinitum Obscure has issued the following statement regarding the anniversary of the death of Dissection's Jon Nödtveidt, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 2006:
"4 years ago my good friend Jon Nödtveidt left this physical realm. Many people criticize me for commemorating this date or for having a fascination with Jon and his music, but they do not know what lied within, the unity that which united both of our persons. When I was a teenager I was fascinated with Jon's concept about Death as I shared the exact same vision but I had not written about it or expressed myself about it just yet.
"I always believed in my mind that me and Jon would one day meet and address these topics. Years passed and life being as silly as it is, lead to THAT. A friendship grew, many other friends and close ones criticized it but they did not understand. 5 years ago, I was able to share the stage with the mighty Dissection and Jon in the audience watching me directly in my eyes as I sang and played 'The Final Aeon.' A few months later I met my biggest acknowledgment in my entire life as a musician. More...
Megadeth's David Ellefson has checked in from the "American Carnage" tour with the following new road report:
"We're two shows into the 'American Carnage' tour and things are going well after a short break following the Canada tour in late July. Tonight we played at the IZOD Center in New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, NY. It was a 'who's who' of guests including Eddie Trunk (VH1's 'That Metal Show'), Jose Mangin from Sirius/XM Radio, Rat Skates (formerly of Overkill) and tons of the NJ/NY metal crew from back in the day. It was also arguably one of the best mosh-pits of the tour, too!
"At one point we were all in our dressing room and it hit me that Dave and I were in New York City in 1986 being courted by the major labels (just before we released 'Peace Sells…') when we went to this same arena to see Metallica open for Ozzy on their 'Master of Puppets' tour. I recalled having a really good hang with everyone after the show, including a nice conversation with Cliff Burton in those same dressing rooms. Truly good memories of a time when we were all ramping up to our big days on the early thrash scene. It's good to see it all back in action again with the 'Carnage' tour.
"We all played really great sets tonight and it’s good to be out here kickin-ass out with the fans in the USA again. See you at the show when we hit your city in the coming weeks!"

"Album update #4 - I lys av mørket: A long week with recordings is now closing in. Today we managed to complete three more drum tracks, leaving only one left for tomorrow. Also a couple more vocal tracks were finished. We also managed to look into some guitar sounds and record some really creepy alternative stuff. Be aware!
"As for the overall result and sound so far, I will admit that this album will take us into a whole new level. Everything has been pushed really hard and I believe that all our ideas will shine in the darkness. Back tomorrow with one last update from Oslo."
