Unreleased Bl'ast! Album Coming

A previously unreleased recording from Bl'ast! will soon see the light day via Southern Lord. The following press release was issued about the coming album:

"As far as stories of lost and found recorded material go, few tales can be told where all the pieces of the puzzle come together in fortunate ways, resulting in a brand new recording that surprised even the band themselves.

"Having formed in 1982, infamous Santa Cruz hardcore legends Bl'ast! released their first album, The Power of Expression in 1985. This debut blew everyone away and went on to become one of the highly sought after, 'must-have' hardcore albums of the ‘80s. Bl'ast! was beyond intense, continually pushing the boundaries of hardcore with their advanced musicianship, unstoppable energetic delivery and explosive live performances. This overwhelming power caught the attention of SST records, who released the band's second album, It’s In My Blood in 1987. Their third LP, Take The Manic Ride, was then released by the label in 1989. Bl'ast!'s wide-eyed, ambitious approach and intense perseverance became an influence for many bands to come. Shortly after the release of Take The Manic Ride, the band broke up and their story was buried by time and dust....UNTIL NOW!

"Earlier this year Bl'ast! guitarist Mike Neider contacted Southern Lord with news that he had found some mysterious old Bl'ast! master tapes in a abandoned storage locker. Greg Anderson, a Bl'ast! fanatic, wasted no time in sending the tapes to a studio to be baked. Needless to say, after 25 years gathering dust, the quality had deteriorated. Still, nobody could have anticipated what would follow. With the audio digitized, Southern Lord contacted fellow longtime Bl'ast! fiend, Dave Grohl about mixing this recording, his response was an enthusiastic 'FUCK YEAH!, LETS DO THIS!'

"Whilst inside Grohl's famous 606 Studios (and with the Neve console as featured in the recent Grohl produced documentary Sound City) an astonishing discovery was made; a completely unheard, unreleased Bl'ast! recording session from the mid-‘80s. More...

Trivium Discusses Upcoming Album

Roadrunner Records recently got Trivium bassist Paolo Gregoletto on the phone to talk about the charity bike ride from London to the Download Festival he took part in, as well as the band's upcoming album.

This new release, and follow-up to "In Waves" (reviewed here), was produced by Disturbed and Device frontman David Draiman and is due out in the fall. You can read the full interview here, or check out these excerpts:

RR: Let's talk a little about the upcoming album. What was the writing process like?

Well, I think after going through making In Waves and touring for a whole year, year and a half, we really had the time to figure out what we wanted to do with the next record. Even before we’d gotten with David [Draiman] and started to plan with him, we were trying to get a really concise and clear vision of how we wanted the album to look and how we wanted it to sound, everything. And I think after touring with In Waves and really gelling as a band once again, now with Nick [Augusto] in the band, we were having fun writing again. And we wrote on tour—every tour we did for In Waves, we were writing and writing, and the closer we got to finishing the record cycle, we just kept writing more. And then eventually we got David on board with us, and we started sending demos over to him and he kind of gave us some general notes that he’d send for each song, whether he was feeling it, what he liked about a certain song, what could be better, and we kept going back and forth for maybe a month or so. Once we got to the studio with him, we really dug into the song structures, vocals, lyrics, everything, and that was definitely intense. Ten, 12-hour days of working on the music, writing, something that was—I don’t think we’d ever experienced pre-production that intense before. But it really helped us. We learned a lot from ourselves and from David, being so close together and working that long.
