We've been talking with bands and fans everywhere to get their mosh pit stories. This week Eric Burnet of Montreal death metal act Derelict shares a story of a lazy pit getting a sudden dose of unexpected violence, Ninja Turtle style, along with a helpful tip about avoiding prison so you don't have to cut your hair.
You know how sometimes at local underground shows, the pit doesn't really get going for the first few bands? How people just kind of shyly stand around and wait for someone drunker or braver to start the pit? Well, standing amidst that crowd of pre-moshers can be a dangerous thing.
We were out on a weekend mini-tour, playing in Brantford, Ontario. The first couple of bands on the bill were quite young, and so were their fans. The pit was taking it's sweet time to get going, and many members of the other bands, myself included, were watching the show from pretty close up, as there was no dangerous action occurring. I had recently suffered a bike accident in Montreal (got rammed by a speed biker!) and I had a pretty big circular scabbed wound on my left arm. Out of nowhere, these two kids, who turned out to be a dual-vocal team from a later band, ran out into the middle of the non-pit and did a Ninja Turtle roll. By this I mean that one of them bent over to 90 degrees, and the other rolled his back over the bent-over dude's back, like the Ninja Turtles. When he landed, they both started hardcore dancing wildly and trying to start a pit. The guy who had rolled, I guess from having been rendered dizzy from his ninja flip, lost his balance and smashed into the line of people quietly enjoying the show. I got propelled into a brick wall and fell, scrapping off my scab in the process and starting to bleed all over my arm.
I'm generally not the violent type, but I have a certain line involving lacks of respect and personal attacks that should not be crossed. I walked over to the kid with the full intention of sending him to the hospital, but then something clicked in my head. It said: "Wait! You're an adult, this kid is a minor. If you go to prison, you'll probably have to cut your hair."
Thankfully, I decided to go walk it off in downtown Brantford instead of murdering anyone. However, I sort of forgot our set time and got back just in time to play, and there's live footage somewhere of me playing that set with blood still dripping down my arm. I still have the stupid scar, although the anger has subsided and I just find it funny now.
Derelict is currently working on its next full-length album, which was previewed with a recent EP release. You can check out the entire promo EP or download the track "Perpetuation" for free at the Derelict Bandcamp page. The band has also posted a separate drum track from the song, which can be found here.
Check back next Tuesday as we share more Pit Stories from band members and metal heads.

Varg Vikernes of Burzum has posted a blog entry online detailing his thoughts on the recent terrorist attack in Norway, in which a government building was bombed and at least 76 people were killed at a youth camp. Anders Behring Breivik is the primary suspect in the attack, and he is currently in custody. News reports have cited Breivik's anti-Islamic and anti-immigration stances as possible motives in the attacks.
Vikernes had the following to say:
"Many argue that Mr. Breivik was in fact executing orders from Mossad, to punish the Palestine-loving Marxist-governed Norway, but first and foremost to create a false banner for misinformed right-wing extremists to unite under, and that what he was doing was a "false flag" operation.
"His manifest is vast, some 1500 pages, and he is pretty thorough in both what he says and what he did. There are a few facts that doesn't make sense to me. How can he list all the problems caused by different Jews in our history and yet fail to mention even one of them with a single word in his manifest? He attacks the symptoms of the disease Europe is suffering under, but not the cause of the disease.
"He is a Freemason too, and that certainly doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Freemasonry is international Jewry at it's worst; they too are working for a de-construction of all nations on Earth, and to build a global Hebrew temple, enslaving us all under the will of the Jews and their servants, the Freemasons. Well, this explains why he doesn't say a word about the creators of all the different religions and ideologies now set up to fight against each other.
"He is a Christian too. Now, in a sense that does make sense, but why does it make sense? The Jews created Christianity as a religion for non-Jews to follow, so that they too would become worshippers of their Hebrew false 'God,' so that the unruly Pagan Europeans would become servants and a powerful tool for the Jews. Whether the Jews created Islam too, or whether they just saw an opportunity coming when it was created is not known, but we do know that the Jews have always promoted conflict between these two religions and indeed they still do. When the Christians grow too strong the Jews support the Muslims to weaken the Christians. When the Muslims grow too strong the Jews support the Christians to weaken the Muslims. They often support both sides too, if both sides are too strong, and they often do in secret. Christians then kill Muslims, and vice versa, whilst the Jews laugh safely in the background, profiting from it all. More...

Saviours has announced the release of the band's fourth album, "Death’s Procession," coming September 6th, 2011 on Kemado Records. Drummer Scott Batiste delivers this statement about the album:
“The main influence on this album was to go back to where we started - Sabbath, Maiden, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy... The whole record is a trek through Earth’s demise which everyone contributes to, oblivious or not. It’s a procession toward death. The world has gone insane. Humans have become apathetic, greedy, self-centered, over-medicated, delusional parasites in a filthy, drained and deflated world. It’s hopeless now, too far gone. Now we wait. That's what this record is about. Earth’s possession and death's procession.”
"Death’s Procession" was recorded by Phil Manley (of Trans Am and The Fucking Champs) at Lucky Cat in San Francisco. None other than Church Of Satan founder Anton Lavey makes a guest appearance of sorts -- says Batiste, “the crazy organ sounding thing through the beginning is Austin’s guitar thru Anton Lavey's old black Leslie, purchased from Lavey's estate sale... absolutely terrifying in person.”
Leading up to the release of "Death’s Procession," Kemado will release two ultra-limited, vinyl-only 12” EPs, featuring tracks from the album with other unreleased songs.

Candlelight Records today has confirmed October 4th as the North American release date for Absu’s new album, titled "Abzu." As previously announced, the album is part two of a planned trilogy of recordings from the Dallas-based mythological occult metal band. Mixed by J.T. Longoria (King Diamond/Solitude Aeternus), the album features the original works of Polish artist Zbigniew Bielak (Watain, Behemoth, Destroyer 666, Vader). Check out the cover artwork below.
Recorded at Nomad Recording Studios in Carrollton, Texas, "Abzu" finds drummer/vocalist Proscriptor and bassist/vocalist Ezezu sharing equal vocal duties and debuts the skills of new guitarist Vis Crom.
Proscriptor comments, “Abzu is the first studio release to feature a co-vocalist alongside myself since our third album, The Third Storm of Cythraul. Ezezu’s vocal presentation is beyond superlative and I am overly pleased with his execution and delivery. The songwriting undertakings were equally distributed between both Ezezu and Vis Crom and I must admit it brings an admirable multiplicity to the album as a whole. The last song on the album, 'A Song For Ea,' was composed in six movements, as it brought the entire band together as an equivalent songwriting team. Vis Crom has definitely proven to be Absu’s most proficient guitarist in the history of the band.”
Writing began on Abzu last autumn as Proscriptor notes, “This album has not only been the most challenging in Absu’s discography, but the quickest paced – composition and arrangement wise. The current line-up is scattered all across the United States, so the album was physically written utilizing internet file sharing. We even rehearsed, at times, while communicating via cell phones. Lyrically, the album descends deeper into Enki's lower world as well Thelemic and Enochian Magic(k) Systems. My lyrical architecture is extremely convoluted, so I decided to create a generalized synopsis explaining the themes behind each song. I feel these are my best poems since 2001’s Tara.” More...
India's Inner Sanctum has issued the following announcement about parting ways with guitarist Rajeev Ramesh:
"As most of you may already know Rajeev Ramesh will be leaving India to pursue his higher studies in Germany. Rajeev was with Inner Sanctum since 2007 and in a way shaped what Sanctum is today. Sanctum has had its strongest lineup till date and his leaving is a great loss to the band. Rajeev’s signature style and fresh outlook on live shows will surely be missed. We wish Rajeev all the success for the future with loads of beer and German groupies."
Rajeev had this to say to Inner Sanctum fans: “Inevitably, there comes a point in life where one has to say Goodbye. At this point in time, I need to focus on my career and in this direction, I would be travelling to pursue my studies at Germany. I’ve had some of the best times performing for almost 3 years with Sanctum. We’ve made some mind blowing music, done of whole lot of crazy gigging, traveled a bunch of cities and made a bunch of friends along the way.
"These are memories that I will always cherish. Over the years, Bas, Bobbins, Chintan and Mikel have become some of my closest friends and together, we really learnt what it means to work as a team. I’m sure Inner Sanctum will continue to tear down every stage they set foot on and I wish the new lineup all the best !! I look forward to meeting up with the guys and jamming up with em’ somewhere down the line.”

Russia's Defect Designer has checked in with the following update about losing a band member:
"Yesterday we had the first gig being a quartet. We are four now, not five. It was a bit unusual but we enjoyed it - having less people in a band is much easier though the sound changes due to the frontman combining vox and guitar duties now. We are happy this choice was done, we are amazed and very enthusiastic.
"My signature Regius 7-string Mayones with Seymour Duncan Blackouts had it's first battle and destroyed the stage and shredded all people. More news to come soon, stay tuned, be DefecteD."
Defect Designer also recently posted its reaction to the terrorist attack in Norway, which can be found here. You can find more info on Defect Designer and listen to songs available for streaming by heading over to the band's MySpace page.
