Each week we check in with fans and bands from around the world to get their mosh pit stories from live shows. This week our Pit Story comes courtesy of Metalunderground.com reader Gorecunt about experiencing a hipster mosh:
The show I went to was primarily for fans of post-metal, which is the first scene where hipsters and metalheads have a common interest. Both subcultures go together like water and oil (sometimes a match - Cynic said this in his article "Black Metal: The Shoegaze Wave"). And so me and a small handful of metalheads were in a crowd of hipsters. Deafheaven was playing and they were the only ones with music heavy enough to mosh to. Not expecting hipsters to *try* starting a pit, we remained reserved. Then the pit started. Me and the guys initially laughed at them as they were slamming about awkwardly in their skinny jeans outside their natural habitat and trying to hold on to their thick-rimmed glasses.
Then one of Deafheaven's heavier songs came on ("Unrequited"). Three of us took places where the pit would be as we waited for the soft intro to give way to the heavy riff. I took center position, two metalheads were at my left and right. The heavy tremolo chords blasted and I pushed the two off, starting the pit. We showed the hipsters how its done. Some got hurt but they brushed it off and resumed moshing. They learned well. The next decent song played and they got the hang of it. It was a proud moment, kind of like old school teaching the new school. It was a surprisingly awesome bonding moment.
Now here's what makes hipster pits fun for me: They're so small and frail by comparison so starting a pit is so easy. I easily pushed 3-5 of them at once and next thing you know half the room is a pit. Its so lulzy.

"It is with deep emotion that we must announce that Mar de Grises has come to an ending.
Several reasons have led us to make this decision. Our spirits have changed and we collectively chose to end this beautiful cycle. Our musical paths have parted. You will know about our new projects soon.

German doom kingpins Obelyskkh’s debut LP, "Mount Nysa," set the hooks into the stoner/doom underworld’s jaws, and the 2012 follow-up, "White Lightnin" hoisted them a notch above countless contemporaries.
Now, less than a year after the release of "White Lightnin," Obelyskkh is anxious to pummel the population with the quartet’s most prophetic audio destruction to date. The following press release was issued about the comign album:
"Since 2008, Obelyskkh has held a solid reputation within their respective scene, each album delivering a more intense and expanded take on their visionary practices. People gave them all kinds of shit for taking like three years to release a record, but as soon as Mount Nysa was born the praise poured in. The accolades magnified on last year’s White Lightnin’, a crushing, sludge-strewn masterpiece produced by Billy Anderson saw the band crawling out of the underground and gaining somewhat more above ground visibility. As Twitching Tongues’ gritty sophomore LP "In Love There Is No Law" nears release, another single from the album has been leaked via Decibel. Listen to the "World War V" track below. The following press release was also issued about the album:
"In Love There Is No Law was recorded, produced and mixed by guitarist Taylor Young at The Pit, then mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege, and along with the rest of the album, the third track “World War V” boasts the instantly recognizable style of melding brooding melody with monolithic riffs in the depressed but enraged Twitching Tongues fashion. It also throws down some of the most prominently angst-fueled vocals and pit-driven NYHC-inspired chugging these mercenaries drop throughout the entire LP as multiple vocal styles layer and build with the churning emotional undertow.
"Upstate New York-based Closed Casket Activities is preparing for the disbursement of In Love There Is No Law on August 20th, and today makes pre-orders for all formats of the album available; check out the package options and more here.
"Shortly after returning stateside from their massive ongoing European tour alongside Harm’s Way, Twitching Tongues will embark on their recently announced On Tour There Is No Law, invading more than thirty cities across the US and Canada between September 13th and October 14th. Support will be provided by Stigmata and Turnstile on select dates and by Downpresser and Angel Du$t for the entire tour, which will include a stop at Reading, Pennsylvania-based hardcore gathering Tsunami Fest on September 29th." "Underworlds marks a peak at which Mammoth Grinder have sharpened and perfected their sound into a seething grind/death/thrash maelstrom of intense degree; unrelenting in its concentrated raw precision and focused power, Underworlds careens violently through ten tracks with effortless versatility and the fixated songcraft expected of a band on their third record. The band commissioned the legendary Joe Petagno (Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Motörhead, Marduk) to deliver the album’s gritty cover artwork.

Germany's Retaliation has checked in with the following announcement about bassist Heiko Heckner sustaining an injury and missing a festival appearance:
"We are very dismayed to inform you that our bass player Heiko will not be able to join us at the Eisenwahn Festival 2013.
"Everything struck at a dispute with ultra gay seal. The little fucker had insulted our bass player who, on the contrary wasn't quite willing to arbitrate the argument, lost his temper and punched the seal in its face. Unfortunately for him, he broke his arm at this attempt and ultra gay seal´s supernatural reflexes allowed him to land a critical bite to Heiko's left leg. Long story short. Heiko is now hospitalized, eating tons of ice cream and having the time of his life while recuperating from his wounds. The photo at the bottom was taken so you can mirror the recent events.
"At this point we want to wish Heiko all the best for his recovery. Get well soon!" More...

Antarctic gods GWAR are set to return to the realms of man and reclaim their vice-like grip on the throat of humanity after spending the last year and a half working on their follow-up to 2011's "Bloody Pit of Horror."
The new recording, "Battle Maximus," is GWAR's first full-length studio effort since the loss of their longtime guitar player, Flattus Maximus, and is set to hit the streets on September 17th on Metal Blade Records.
Check out the first track, "Madness at the Core of Time" at this location.
"This album is both a tribute to Flattus and a telling of the next chapter in the story of GWAR," said warty front-thing Oderus Urungus. "The combo of the brand new album and show should satisfy even the most hardcore Flattus devotee with the fact that GWAR's slay-skills are as supreme as ever, and the band stands poised to embark on our most earth-shattering world tour yet. We have mourned, we have honored, and now it's time to fucking DEVASTATE in the name of Flattus and the supreme entity that is GWAR."
Oderus continued..."This is our first record in our brand-new Slave Pit Studios, which Flattus had a lead role in designing, but without him we had no one left to twiddle the buttons, much less play the blazing metal leads and provide the musical direction that rescued GWAR from the depths of clown-band obscurity. I mean, Balsac is no slouch, but Flattus' departure left a huge hole in our band. We had no choice. We had to blow the Horn of Hate..."
The Horn of Hate is an ancient Slave Pit contraption that summons all the Scumdogs in the Universe in the unlikely event that one of them is killed in battle, disintegrated, or becomes a Mormon. As the cosmic tones echoed throughout the universe (which unfortunately sounds like a giant duck-fart), the Maximus tribe answered the call by traveling to Earth to wage the mighty "Battle Maximus," a musical trial-by-combat for the right to follow in the footsteps of Flattus. When the dust had settled, but one Scumdog remained standing...the zit-encrusted and undeniably shred-tastic Pustulus Maximus. More...

Support will come from Prosthetic Records artist Zodiac. The tour is scheduled to kick off November 14th in Grand Rapids, MI and will run through December 14th in New York, NY (see dates below).
Frontman Dave Wyndorf checked in with his thoughts about Last Patrol: "Last Patrol is a return to our roots in terms of vibe and recording style. It's full-on psychedelic space-rock with a 60's garage feel, recorded almost exclusively with vintage guitars, amps and effects in our hometown of Red Bank, NJ. The songs are a kind of Space-Noir, tales of cosmic revenge, peaking libidos, alienation and epic strangeness. It's a weird trip through the back alleys of a dark, retro-future, which not by coincidence very much resembles my own life. (laughs) The lyrics aren't fantasy really, rather a recounting of my musings on, observations of and general emotional reaction to my life and environment during a 1 week writing period in February of 2013. But I tend to use the vernacular and imagery of science fiction and surrealism to express myself and that's where these lyrics get trippy. There's also our cover version of Donovan's "Three Kingfishers" which I thought fit the mood of the album." More...

Virginia traditional metal act Volture have revealed the track list and album artwork for the upcoming debut LP "On the Edge." The album is set for release on September 13th via High Roller Records.
Volture is the brainchild of bassist Ryan Waste (known for his work with Municipal Waste) and guitarist Nick Poulus (Ex-Cannabis Corpse). Both got together to form the band in Richmond, VA in November 2008. The song writing leaned towards traditional Euro/US Metal and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. The two friends were joined by drummer Barry Cover and vocalist Brent Hubbard (who was later replaced by Jack Bauer). The band's debut mini album "Shocking Its Prey" was issued in early 2010. Quickly after its release Dave Boyd of Twisted Tower Dire fame joined as a second guitarist. The "Rulebreaker" 7" single (plus video clip) followed in 2011 (including a brilliant cover version of Gotham City's "Killer Angels" on the flipside of the vinyl).
Volture continued to tour the United States and Canada throughout 2010/2011. In 2012, the band appeared at the prestigious Keep It True festival. Shortly thereafter the band inked a deal with High Roller Records. The result is the full-length debut album entitled "On The Edge", containing nine highly energetic traditional heavy metal anthems - from "Ride The Nite" all the way through to "Rock You Hard".
Ryan Waste commented: "'On The Edge' is the total heavy metal package. In comparison to the mini-album and the single the themes are a little more involved and the song writing has gotten a bit more complex. Although we never want to stray too far away from our original direction, I think it's important to grow. We will always play traditional heavy metal and that will never change!." More...
German technical thrash act Protector is back with the band's first full length album in 22 years. The new album will be entitled "Reanimated Homunculus," and is scheduled for release on September 13th via High Roller Records. The album is the band's fifth studio album, the follow up to 1993's "The Heritage."
"With a sound uncompromising and aggressive like burning sulphur, they should have been ranked among the bigger names in German Thrash. Sure, any thrasher worth his salt heard about 'Protector Of Death,' 'Misanthropy,' 'Golem' and 'Urm The Mad,' but still, Protector never really grew beyond their underground status before they disbanded in 2003. The resurrection of Protector began in 2011 with a demo and a split single, and now the time has come for a new full-length album. On 'Reanimated Homunculus,' the band returns to its roots in the early eighties, turning away from the deathier path they used to walk in the nineties.'
Vocalist Martin Missy reveals some more details: "It will be a mix of brand new songs, including the first two songs I have ever written for Protector, and some songs that have already been released on the demo and the split between 2011 and 2012, and an old Protector song from 2000 that we have made our own version of. We've tried to keep it old school, to keep the raw feeling of the songs. We wanted an 80's thrash metal sound, and I hope we have succeeded with that." More...
