Periphery has been posting a track-by-track breakdown for each song on new album "Periphery II," and the band has now reached 9th track "Make Total Destroy." Periphery's Misha Mansoor comments:
"My parents are originally from Mauritius, and after my Dad retired a few years ago they decided to move back to Mauritius. Every year or two (depending on my schedule), I go there for vacation, usually in the winter. My creativity unfortunately seems to be very weather dependent, meaning that in the Winter when the weather blows, I find myself writing little to nothing. Since Mauritius is in the southern hemisphere and is a tropical island, the weather is incredible there, and when I go there in the Winter I usually end up writing a bit. I wrote Zyglrox and Totla Mad during one stay. I wrote the demos for Unleash The Pwnies, Chocolate Flobs (for you Soundclick fans!) and the demos for Make Total Destroy and what eventually became Masamune there in another stay. I had been jamming on my 7 string a lot while watching tv, and ended up just tapping a lot of octaves around the fretboard, and ended up writing the song's first riff, and when I sat down to record, a few more ideas came out but I knew it wasn't complete. We knew the song had potential, so again while on a "writing retreat" at my place, Mark and I wrote some sections to help the new arrangement flow to accommodate Spencer's awesome vocal ideas. By the time this song was completed, I knew we had something very special. We ended up making this song the first single because it really seemed to showcase and almost summarize the overall feel and vibes of the album better than any other song. It doesn't hurt that it is a pretty high energy song and really fun to play live too."
Mark Holcomb also added, "Although most of this song was already written as a demo on Misha's SoundClick, he, Jake and I holed up (huh huh) for a couple days writing and adding sections to partially-imagined song ideas like this (Luck As a Constant, being another example of that). I wrote that fast thrashy riff in the middle, while Misha wrote the tapping tail end of it as well as the groove riff that follows it. We made some other changes to the arrangement to better suit the vocal ideas that Spencer had written, and it ended up turning into a far more complete song in the end." More...
Ripple Music is proud to announce the signing of American doom rockers Devil to Pay. The label commented:
"The band’s fourth, as of yet untitled, album is set for worldwide release on Ripple Music in the coming months and the band will subsequently tour to knock the crowds out of their skulls, including appearances in all the major heavy rock/doom festivals.
"Devil To Pay was formed in the beginning of the millennia as a doom rock band with metal/stoner and rock tangents, effortlessly crushing skulls while simultaneously coaxing them to sing along. The band hails the almighty riff, but unlike many of their contemporaries, the song is still king. That is what separates the great bands from the shoulda & coulda bands. Now celebrating their 10th year anniversary, Devil To Pay has aged like Kentucky bourbon, distilling a culmination of years of sweat, highway miles, cigarette smoke and hangovers into crushing compositions and bone-jarring, heavy musical moments.
"With a catalog of underground releases, Devil To Pay gained accolades, awards and a hard earned cult-like status. They have established themselves as the go-to band for those searching out more than just a few killer riffs; a foundation of heavy that will flourish under the Ripple banner."
Devil to Pay commented on the new alliance: “We are stoked to be a part of the Ripple family and to work with one of the most genuine heavy rock labels in the world! Having released our first three albums independently, it’s clear that these guys don't compromise in terms of putting out creative music and are the true believers of heavy rock. The variety of bands and the sheer quality of music they’ve released speaks for itself. We are very much honored that our music earned its place among their ranks!"
German act Xandria has issued the following announcement about parting ways with the band's bassist:
"We sadly have to announce the departure of our yearlong bass guitar player Nils Middelhauve today. It was mainly due to personal reasons why Nils took the decision to split ways in the future. It gradually became obvious to him that some points of view vastly grew apart, concluding in Nils’ determination to not continue in Xandria anymore. Especially since all members are friends first and foremost, any more compromises had been even more hurtful. The band regrets Nils’ decision, yet is respecting it at the same time, even though everyone is really sad about it.
"Us, the remaining members in Xandria, are still a bit shocked and paralyzed and we can hardly imagine to continue without our yearlong fellow. We went through so many good and rough times together – Nils always gave everything for the band and we all have to be very grateful for his work! Nils – we will never forget the times we had together and we wish you all the best for the future! Thanx for everything!
"At this stage no replacement has been determined. We will carefully look for an adequate successor. Nils kindly will play any show confirmed so far, if no replacement will be found by the time of these very shows."
New details have now come to light in the ongoing saga of Lamb of God front man Randy Blythe being held in the Czech Republic. Blythe had previously posted bail but remained in custody due to a complaint filed by the prosecutor in the case.
Praha.idnes.cz is now reporting that the prosecutor’s complaint to block Blythe’s bail has been dismissed, however his bail has now been doubled to $400,000. It is unclear if the additional bail has been paid or if Blythe will be released.
Blythe is being held on manslaughter charges in connection with a Lamb of God show in 2010 when a 19 year old fan was allegedly pushed off the stage and subsequently died several weeks later. The band has remained fairly quiet on the issue in the three weeks Blythe has been detained, so far only issuing the following statement: More...

The newest in a series of reissues from Portland’s Poison Idea via Southern Lord has been confirmed. Following the reissue of "Darby Crash Rides Again" early this year, the next in line comes in the form of PI’s "The Fatal Erection Years;" featuring forty-five raw, filthy nasty tracks. The following press release was issued about the band:
"Poison Idea's official debut release was 1983’s short, lo-fi blast of punk/hardcore fury, the Pick Your King EP. The infamous jacket featured a 'choice' of two kings, Jesus (front cover) and Elvis Presley (back cover). It was released on the bands own Fatal Erection label. In 1984, the band released the Record Collectors Are Pretentious Assholes 12” (the cover, featuring guitarist Pig Champion’s substantial vinyl collection). The record found the band incorporating subtle heavy rock elements into their music which was further honed on their contribution to the 1985 Drinking Is Great compilation 7” with the track 'Laughing Boy.' Both Record Collectors… and Drinking… were also self-released on Fatal Erection Records. By this time (84-85), POISON IDEA was in full swing and were perfecting their signature wall of sound: a raging punk attack.
"In cooperation with the band and TKO Records, Southern Lord is honored to release the CD version of The Fatal Erection Years. This compilation collects the Pick Your King 7”, Record Collectors Are Pretentious Assholes LP, and 4 compilation tracks from the era. Exclusive to this CD version, is the entire live set from the band at their best in Portland circa 1983. Live at the Met features 19 live, raw punk blasts and effectively brings this essential archival document to a raucous, destructive end. The audio has been remastered and restored by Jack Control (World Burns to Death, Severed Head of State), and the poster/booklet contains liner notes from Poison Idea vocalist Jerry A, and tons of photos, flyers and more from the band’s early days. A must have for the die-hard fans and any fan of true hardcore, punk rock!
"The Fatal Erection Years will see North American release on August 14th, just two weeks before Poison Idea will storm the two-day The Power Of The Riff East in Brooklyn the same night as Agnostic Front, Pentagram, Negative Approach, Xibalba and more!
"Southern Lord will continue to reissue seminal Poison Ideareleases over the coming months including War All The Time, Ian Mackaye, Feel The Darkness, We Must Burn and Last Will & Testament. Stay tuned." More...

Iron Maiden's Steve Harris announced that he will release a solo album entitled "British Lion" through EMI Music on September 24, 2012. The album is comprised of ten songs that Steve and his collaborators have been working on for the past few years between Iron Maiden tours and releases.
The following is from the official press release: "With a decidedly heavy rock-vibe this roaring debut paints with a full palette of sounds; brooding, melancholic, righteously indignant and exuberantly heavy. With Kevin Shirley at the mixing helm – whose credits include Iron Maiden as well as Led Zeppelin, Journey and Rush among many others – this is an album to sink your teeth into.
"From the growling riffage of opening salvo 'This Is My God' to the heavy forlorn balladry of follow-up Lost Worlds which showcases Richard Taylor’s soaring vocals, it’s clear that ‘British Lion’ is an altogether different beast from Maiden.
" 'Karma Killer', with its dirge-like muscularity, and 'Us Against The World', with its massive chorus, demonstrates just how far ‘British Lion’ has flexed Steve Harris’ considerable musical muscle. Dovetailed with guitarist David Hawkins’ positively gargantuan lyrical guitar melodies, it’s a mere hors d'oeuvre ahead of the epic, riffing-feast of 'The Chosen Ones', with its swaggering bravado.
" 'A World Without Heaven, at a breathtaking seven minutes and infused with progressive elements without ever teetering into self-indulgence illustrates perfectly these songsmiths’ colossal abilities to create a mood and stay there. Supercharged by Steve Harris’ inimitable style, there’s an un-cynical vibe here that’s as refreshing as it is out of place in today’s all-too-categorised music industry.
"And as far as the name ‘British Lion’; 'I’ve always been proud to be British,' explains Steve, 'I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t be. It’s a massive part of being me. It’s not like I’m flag-waving or trying to preach, this is not a political statement at all. It’s like supporting your football team, where you come from. I just think it lends itself to some really strong imagery too, and to me it fits in with the sound.'
"With Iron Maiden, Steve Harris has become one of the most recognised and successful ambassadors for British music on the world stage. Having released 15 studio albums, sold over 85 million records worldwide and played more than two thousand gigs in 58 countries in the band’s thirty-five year career, his appeal is truly global.
"And now with ‘British Lion’, Steve steps out from Iron Maiden’s illustrious shadow to present a different side of his musical visions."
The tracklisting for ‘British Lion’ is as follows: More...
