Periphery is continuing to post a new detailed breakdown of each track from new album "Periphery II." Misha Mansoor had this to say about the song "Ragnarok:"
"This is the second part of the Trilogy, and is therefore placed around the middle of the album. I was futzing around with a variation on the Totla Mad tuning (BbGDFAD) where you maintain the note relationship on the bottom two strings but on a 7 string, so with our 7s being a half step down, this also brings the low note to F#. The ideas I had for this song didn't require an 8 string, so I figure I would just downtune from our regular tuning and mess around with that. The first riff is that typical Meshuggah style groove, but with a strange motif over the top. That motif comes back at the end of the song as a more grounded version, and at a slower tempo.
"I wanted this song to have a bit more of an evil vibe but I still wanted it to groove, and I remember attempting to channel a bit of Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain (you know the song, Youtube it) or something dark like that. Eventually the song makes it to a prettier and more epic section which is referencing the first riff in Muramasa in feel, but with a different progression and tempo, and it also gets linked back lyrically. When I originally demoed this song, I wanted a sort of Jekyll/Hyde moment, except in this song it is reversed (Evil to good). Masamune is the other Jekyll/Hyde song but that one is the correct way round.
"Jake wrote the interlude at the end of the song as a nod to a motif in one of our favorite sections in the last album's epic closer 'Racecar.' I have seen both Dream Theater and Devin Townsend reference songs/motifs across albums, and Jake and I love that kinda stuff, so we thought it would be a fun little easter egg as well as a cool way to revisit that theme with a twist." San Francisco, CA's Hammers of Misfortune has unveiled a new video, which is for the title track from the band's latest album, "17th Street." The video was directed by Aaron Cobbett and filmed on location in San Francisco on the very street for which the song was named. Fans can watch the video exclusively on Vevo.com here or in the player below.
With a newly-rejuvenated line-up and the signature sound still intact, San Francisco's Hammers of Misfortune has returned with "17th Street." "If you listen carefully, you'll find that each song has its own point of view. You might find hope, or something very different, very dark." More...
Swedish Viking metallers King Of Asgard will release "…to North" this coming July 31st via Metal Blade Records. In collaboration with MetalInjection.net, King Of Asgard now premiering the "The Nine Worlds Burn" video clip. Check out the video at this location or in the player below.
King of Asgard comments on the video shoot: "Why look further, when one is surrounded by great artists? Again, King of Asgard teamed up with the 'Einhärjar' video creator, Rickard Monéus and the 1897 crew including Andreas Edelönn. The production set up took place in the depths of a forest close to King of Asgard's rehearsal lair. A late night in May - dusk and burdened raindrops. Perfect conditions for creating works of ruin. Searching to reflect the mythological end-of-this-world theme of 'The Nine Worlds Burn,' Rickard and Andreas produced a video full of ritualistic and apocalyptic visuals that perfectly enhance the song's sense of dread and destruction. A result we are all proud to present. That depict and burn the crust of the earth!" More...

Between the Buried and Me (aka BTBAM) has announced the name of the band's upcoming full-length album as "The Parallax II: Future Sequence." The new album, which clocks in at approximately 72 minutes, will be released October 9th and features artwork from Charlotte, North Carolina artist and designer Chandler Owen (Underoath, Shai Hulud, and Hopesfall).
"The Parallax II: Future Sequence" was recorded at The Basement Studios in Winston-Salem, NC with longtime friend of the band and producer Jamie King. Jamie engineered, mixed, and mastered the album, which makes this the sixth release Jamie and BTBAM have worked together on.
Regarding the concept of "The Parallax II: Future Sequence," the new full-length album picks up where the 2011 EP, "The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues," left off. Guitarist Paul Waggoner comments, "The two main characters of the story take on a journey through space and time with the unenviable task of having to cure the flaws of humanity by any means necessary. While the EP served mostly as an introduction to the characters, Future Sequence contains the action of the story. The lyrics are written in the stream of consciousness style, which really helps to capture the perspective and emotion of the characters. We really enjoyed the challenge of writing this record, and I think we were all pleasantly surprised with how well the music and lyrics jived with one another. I couldn't be happier with how Future Sequence turned out." More...

Tantara has released a new video from the recording of upcoming album “Based On Evil,” produced by Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica, Blind Guardian, Rainbow) and to be released the 24th of August. Check it out below. You can also listen to the single "Based On Evil" at this location. Indie Recordings commented on the album:
"The plans to make a full-length record began right after the release of the EP 'Human Mutation' in 2010 and the band started the search for the right producer. Tantara entered the studio again in July 2011 to record their long anticipated debut album with the legendary producer Flemming Rasmussen. The band chose Rasmussen because of his background of producing records for bands like Rainbow, Metallica, Blind Guardian and Morbid Angel. The album 'Based On Evil' was recorded during four weeks in July 2011 in the studios ARK Recording Studios and Sweet Silence Mix Suite in Copenhagen, Denmark.
"'Based On Evil' is filled with fast, mind-boggling riffs, aggressive vocals and impeccable drumming. In addition to the melodic and masterly conducted solos one can find progressive elements in Tantara’s music. Their songs might be longer than normal in the genre, but they possess a unique song-writing talent that keep the listener engaged throughout the whole album. Tantara draws inspiration from bands such as Heathen, Anthrax, Exodus, Megadeth, Slayer, Nuclear Assault, Vio-lence and Metallica." More...
Europe prepares for the return of one of North America's most blasphemous and unholy death metal bands. Incantation will once again invade European territory this August for a series of festival dates. The band comments:
As we are still in the midst of the recording process for our 8th and latest studio full length, which will be released through Listenable Records, we will make the short run to play some of Europe's most brutal festivals. We are honored to have been asked to play these amazing fests this year, we will be playing some new tracks from the upcoming new release later this year, as well as our classics. We just toured Brazil and the response for the new material was horns held high and an outbreak of death metal overload!!!
It has been brought to our attention [that there has been] interest in Incantation playing additional shows/fests in August, but unfortunately were not able to play any more Euro festivals at this time. The aforementioned shows are all we have agreed to play. Of course, we are disappointed at not to be able to play every show asked, but extremely happy to be playing the shows we are. Due to recording obligations and (lack of) booking details, time restraints [will prevent] us from being able to play all of them. I would personally like to apologize to any organizers that might have been misled into thinking we were playing, and thank all of you for the continued support of Incantation!!!!
Below are the European festival dates that Incantation will be playing, a few more dates being arranged as we speak.
8/10 - Brutal Assault (Czech)
8/11 - Party.San (Germany)
8/12 - Ieper Fest (Belgium)
8/13 - Tilburg (Holland) "Little Devil"
8/14 - Essen (Germany) "Turock"
8/17 - Motocultor Fest (France)
8/18 - SummerBreeze (Germany)

The other day I was trading video uploads with fellow staff member Carl, whose taste usually gravitates towards classy traditional metal. I sent him a track from the grindcore band Cuntscrape, "Giving Head to Mr. Ed," leaving him speechless. His reply went something like this - "I thought there was a limit to the extreme. I was wrong." Ha ha, poor Carl.
Nope. There's no limit to the extreme in sight. Back in the late eighties and early nineties, the progenitors of twisted and depraved metal like Lividity or Broken Hope couldn't have imagined how contorted the genre would have gotten. Nowadays it gets more brutal than anyone could have ever envisioned. The horror fantasy themes have given way to pornogrind lyrics, inaudible vocals and psychopathic themes. Over time lyrics have been all but done away with, almost as if they are too sensitive and get in the way of what should be primal. It's all meant to be hilarious and over the top, and goregrind is the last frontier when it comes to offensive, loud metal. More...
