Pit Stories: Geriatric Mosher

Tuesday might be that day when Friday seems like an eternity away, but its also the day we share more epic heavy metal Pit Stories!

This week's tale from the pit comes courtesy of vocalist Manuel Castillo from Santiago, Chile-based metal band Half Blood.

Manuel shares the following tale of an unlikely mosher at a Cannibal Corpse show:

I remember my first Pit Story because it was one of the greatest in my entire life, and also so strange. I was a 14 year old metal head that had never been to a metal concert other than small local gigs when got the news that Cannibal Corpse was playing a show, I was so fucking happy! I asked my parents for tickets to the show for my birthday. In those days going to a concert was great cause it was a good deal, and I think the ticket cost less than 20 dollars and came with a t-shirt.

The day finally came and I went alone because the parents of my metal head friend didn't let him go. I headed to the arena called Teatro Caupolican, and when I got there everyone was taller and older than me! I entered the arena and the smell of weed was strong. That was the first time I got high just because almost the entire crowd was smoking. There was a support band called Dorso, didn't like them very much but who cares, I was there for Cannibal Corpse.

The concert was starting, it was mind blowing, everything, the lights, the heaviness that only a live band can bring, specially CC! So I was there headbanging like a maniac and then I saw the strangest thing I've ever seen at a concert. There he was, an old man, dressed like my grandfather, with a newspaper under his arm, a nice shirt and nice shoes headbanging to the rhythm of one of the heaviest death metal bands ever! No one was saying anything to him. After that, on "Hammer Smashed Face" I entered the pit for the first time in my life, at a CC concert, what a great night.

What was your first concert like? Let us know about your debut metal show in the comments! You can also hear music from Half Blood with a video below for "Self Exile," taken off the band's self-titled album. More...

God Mother Signs With Party Smasher

Founded in 2012 in Stockholm, God Mother churns out an electrifying sound inspired as much by the grinding speed of Nasum and Rotten Sound as by the almighty weight of the Melvins. The band's 2015 debut "Maktbehov" was hailed by Pitchfork as "an asteroid crash of an album that renders most of its competition extinct."

Consisting of frontman Sebastian August Campbell, guitarist Max Lindstrom, bassist Daniel Noring, and drummer Michael Dahlstrom, God Mother packs hardcore, grind, sludge, and noise into lethal projectiles, fueled by bilingual lyrics denouncing society's ignorance in both Swedish and English.

The band has now caught the eye of none other than Party Smasher Inc. founder and The Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weinman.

Weinman states: "For some reason, out of all the European countries producing independent punk and heavy music, it was always the bands from Sweden that made the noise even us arrogant pricks in the United States had to notice. To be completely honest, after 20 years of touring the world and playing thousands of shows with thousands of bands, it is hard to impress me. But Sweden has done it again. God Mother is an undeniable force majeure that demands attention like bands did in the old days, by just being that fucking good. Torch, officially passed!"

Drummer Michael Dahlstrom says this about the signing: "We are super excited and proud to be part of the Party Smasher Inc family. Ever since we started talking about signing earlier this year we have felt extremely welcome. We played the Party Smasher showcase at SXSW and we are supporting The Dillinger Escape Plan around Europe this summer. Party Smasher Inc is a place for creativity with a great DIY attitude that we can relate to, and we couldn't be more thrilled about releasing our new album here." More...

Were I Blind Releases New Video

Combining the party elements of electronic music with energetic and chaotic riffs, London-based electro / industrial metal outfit Were I Blind is about to bounce into the scene with a self-titled EP.

The band was formed around drummer/songwriter OC Preciado (Breed 77, Reverted), Alberto Marin (Def Con Dos, Hamlet, Kaothic) and Andrew Trewin (Collisions, Magna Carta) and will reveal full EP details soon.

For now, Were I Blind reveals a debut single for the EP's title track. Check out the music video below, and the band also comments:

"Our new single 'Were I Blind' is an analogy of the concept of how society is being subliminally controlled through media, and how we/society are continually becoming more blind as to what is actually going on in the world by feeding our egos with materialistic gains and likes on social media. The idea behind the lyrics is that if we were to close our eyes, perhaps we would wake up and see the truth." More...

Overoth Announces New Album "The Forgotten Tome"

Irish extreme metal horde Overoth today revealed long awaited details for the follow up to the debut, "Kingdom Of Shadows." With no less than ten tracks and over 40 minutes of extreme metal laden with orchestration, and artwork from none other than Will Simpson (Game Of Thrones, DC Comics), the quartet's forthcoming grand opus entitled "The Forgotten Tome" is set for release on September 22nd via Hostile Media. The album will be available as a standard CD, limited edition heavyweight vinyl and as a digital download. Album pre-orders and bundle deals are available over here.

The band commented: "We've been working on this album for what seems like an aeon, but finally we're pleased to announce that our hard work and determination for perfection has come to a close. We actually tracked the drums, guitars and vocals for this album around two years ago, and we had planned to add some subtle orchestration as we had done in our debut 'Kingdom Of Shadows'... however... when Dan (guitars) got started, the songs yearned for much more than we had anticipated. It would be further months of writing, from violins to piano, to the use of ancient instruments like the duduk and ney flute and then back and forwards with mixing... it would appear mixing twenty instruments isn't all that easy! We also had a grand vision for the artwork and working with a talent such as Will Simpson was a great experience, he really did bring our vision to life. The artwork is a story in itself, with multiple pieces all intertwined. There is more than what the cover art depicts, but we'll reveal all that at some point in the very near future. Finally, 'The Forgotten Tome' is complete and we are set to unleash the beast into the world this September. More...

Kaipa Introduces New LP "Children Of The Sounds"

Legendary Swedish progressive rockers Kaipa, led by mastermind Hans Lundin, has announced the new studio album "Children of the Sounds," which is set for release on September 22nd via InsideOutMusic. The band's thirteenth album, and eighth since the act was reborn in 2002, this album features the line-up of Lundin, accompanied by Per Nilsson (Scar Symmetry), Morgan Ågren (Karmakanic), Jonas Reingold (The Flower Kings, Karmakanic), Patrik Lundström (Ritual) & Aleena Gibson, plus a guest appearance from violinist Elin Rubinsztein.

Hans comments: "In November 2014 when I was still filled with all the energy I had captured during the summer I started to write the new songs. What really made me push the start button this time was a magic spirit that filled my whole body after visiting a concert with Morgan Ågren and his band 'Mats & Morgan Band'. I woke up the morning after the concert and still felt that enormous groove filling every part of my consciousness. I realized that I had to canalize all this energy somewhere so I decided to start to write some new music. I had also found a lot of inspiration from the long bicycle rides that I made during the summer in the open land-scape around Uppsala. It was like if the notes were rising up from the billowing fields I passed and the words were falling like raindrops from the clear sky. So now I suddenly had found the key to open up all these ideas that had been slumbering at the back of my mind for a while. All the beauty and the wondrous inspiration from nature in combination with this 'enormous groove" made me create 'five long songs during the next months."

The result is as colourful musically and lyrically as Kaipa devotees will expect from the band's rich discography dating back to the debut opus released in 1975. Formed in 1973, Kaipa never shied away from experimentation, embracing fresh elements and sounds manifesting especially on the albums released in the 2000's. "Children Of The Sounds" is no exception, the album burns with creative fervour and spirit most vividly displayed on the title track, the 17 minutes long "On The Edge Of New Horizons" or closing track "What's Behind The Fields." It embodies a powerful, positive energy and artistic brilliance that is irresistible and true to the genre's very essence.

Unalei Issues New Single "Alba"

Less than a year has passed since the release of the debut album "Taedium Vitae" by Italy's Unalei and today the band issued the new single "Alba" via Club Inferno.

The song was mixed by Alfonso Fo' Corace and mastered by the legend Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios.

It is a different and a bit stunning track for you, affected to their sound until now. An important step for Unalei which extends points of view and sound horizons and has been written in English for the first time. No distorsions, screams or double-bass, by now the metal/gothic vein may transpire only from the atmosphere and the sensations of the track.

Clamfight Signs On With Argonauta Records

U.S. sludge/doom act Clamfight signed on with Italy's Argonauta Records. The members of Clamfight are four childhood friends turned grown-ass men who are almost as committed to big riffs as they are to each other.

Influenced in equal parts by their dads’ vinyl, that sketchy older kid from woodshop class’ thrash and hardcore tapes as well as touchstone heavy bands like Sleep, Clutch, Neurosis, Eyehategod and Mastodon, the band has plied its unique brand of suburban working slob metal up and down the East Coast of the United States since 2005.

The band commented: “We're thrilled to be working with Argonauta for the upcoming release of III. We had a few options available to us however we kept going back to Argonauta because Gero seemed so genuine and honest to work with. We're also pretty tight with the lads in Hollow Leg and they had nothing but great things to report regarding their experience with Argonauta. We're excited about the potential that exists with this budding relationship and look forward to broadening our reach across the Atlantic and helping promote the other great bands on the Argonauta roster!”

Having issued a debut album, "Vol. I," in 2010, and a second album, "I vs. the Glacier," in 2013 through The Maple Forum, the quartet is now poised to release its third full length, "III," due later this year. More information on the album is expected soon. More...
