As was recently reported, Helstar bassist Jerry Abarca is currently undergoing more testing to diagnose and treat his stomach-related illness. Abarca has now announced he will take a hiatus from performing live until his health has fully returned and doctors have pronounced him fit for stage.
Abarca first fell ill on Helstar's December 2010 European Chaos tour. Considered a medical emergency, Abarca was flown home to Texas, while Slovenian bassist Matej Susnik was then recruited to complete the tour.
Helstar will once again enlist the services of Susnik on the "Summer of Hate" European tour, slated to take place August 25th through September 5th. The tour will consist of eleven concerts covering eight countries (Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Austria, England, Greece and Italy).
A replacement bassist will also fill in on upcoming shows Helstar has scheduled in the U.S. Auditions are now underway, and Helstar will announce the session player for this position once a selection has been made.
Ex Dementia has issued the following announcement about recruiting a new bassist and working on a new EP:
"Greetings (insert clever surname for Ex Dementia fans)! A few little announcements. First, we are experiencing a slight line-up change. Our bassist Joe can no longer commit to EXD, due to tackling another profession, and will be forced to move out of state. Fortunately for us, he has been a great contribution to Ex Dementia, and a great friend. We are happy to have had him on at least one album, and a plethora of great shows (and not so great... Nor sober)! Exit Joe, enter... Joe. Coffin Joe that is. No, we're not all using stage-names now. That's just what I've always called him.
"Our new bassist, Coffin Joe is a Philly-based death metal NUT! He's an asshole, a great player, and hilarious... A perfect fit for us! We look forward to writing, playing, and recording with Coffin Joe in the future! So give a dead, stiff, and cold (in a box!) welcome! Ex Dementia is now:
Chris - Guitars/Vocals
Coffin Joe - Bass
Branden - Drums
"The next announcement is our next gig! We will be sharing the stage with Rottrevore, Malignancy, and Legionary! This massacre will take place Saturday, September 24th at the Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn, NY!
"And lastly, our new EP! The new EP is entitled 'Crack the Coffin,' and is scheduled to come out late-fall/early winter on HPGD Productions! We already have 3 songs written, and hope to write 2 more, and throw in a cover. The songs we have written already are VERY. FUCKING. FAST. So fast, I cant keep up sometimes! But I assure you, come time to record, we'll be tighter than the pants on a Norma Jean fan. Within the next few weeks, more will be releasing song-titles, demos, etc. So keep your eyes peeled for that!"

After devoting the late Winter season to writing and recording, Wolves in the Throne Room is now in the final stages of completing a fourth full-length opus.
For over six months the Weaver brothers, Aaron and Nathan, have been immersed in the painstaking writing and recording process of their newest album, and this week the process is nearly complete, at press time the album in its final mixing stages. The Wolves in the Throne Room clan has confirmed the title of this forthcoming astral black metal document as "Celestial Lineage."
Stated WITTR drummer Aaron Weaver of the writing process for the album: "An ornate constellation of imagery is what that guides the songwriting process. Cedar temples crowned with burnished bronze domes glimpsed in a remote valley. Wild Midsummer bonfires and feasting on roasted flesh. All of the sounds serve to evoke the images that exist in our minds eye. With this record we're going to explore an entirely new palette of sound. We want the instruments to sound like the liturgical music of a cedar cult."
Besides closing out a trilogy within Wolves in the Throne Room's own annals, "Celestial Lineage" also marks the final release to ever be recorded in engineering wizard Randall Dunn's Aleph Studio, the birthplace of a plethora of groundbreaking releases from Earth, Sunn O))), Boris, Cave Singers, Bjork/Omar Souleyman and countless more over the past decade, as well as where the immense tones and energy on WITTR's lauded "Two Hunters" and "Black Cascade" albums were captured.
In support of the album, Wolves in the Throne Room will commence worldwide touring this September, kicking off in the Americas, and eventually engulfing many other regions of the planet through 2012. Stay tuned for final album details and tour dates to be unearthed in the weeks ahead.

Metal Injection is hosting the worldwide premiere of the video "By the Roses Grave" from Swedish folk metallers Falconer. "By the Roses Grave (Vid Rosornas Grav)" is taken off the band's brand new studio album "Armod," which features 11 songs sung completely in Swedish and was released earlier this month via Metal Blade Records.
Comments Falconer guitarist Stefan Weinerhall: "The video for By the Roses Grave is re-enacting a story that took place not far from where we live. It gives you a vision of what position you would have 150 years ago if you were just a common man or serf. It surely doesn't look like a metal video in the beginning but then again, when have Falconer ever been about being as metal as possible? The video is once again produced and directed by www.1897.se - they also did the video for Carnival of Disgust."
Almah has confirmed the title of its upcoming third album, the follow-up to the previous success "Fragile Equality," as "Motion." The cover artwork is available below.
Vocalist Edu Falaschi commented on the artwork, "The cover has been created by myself with my own iPhone. I took a picture in Paris and used some applications to create that motion effect. Then Felipe used my picture and re-created this artwork in high resolution using Photoshop and completed it with new elements. This time we wanted something modern and direct to represent our music and we are totally sure that we got the result we really wanted since the very beginning. This CD will show the real Almah's language and personality! Stay tuned for further news!"
At the moment the band is finishing the recording of the new CD at Norcal Studios (São Paulo, Brazil). "Motion" is to be released this fall via AFM Records (Europe and North America), Laser Company (Brazil), and Victor JVC (Japan). The album is produced by Edu Falaschi and Felipe Andreoli.

Two new tracks from Hank Williams III's new album "3 Bar Ranch Cattle Callin'" are now available to stream online. Blurring the boundaries between thrash metal, noise rock and country, Hank3's new record creates a brand new genre of music.

Featuring actual cattle auctioneers Tim Dowler and Mitch Jordan performing vocals on the album, "3 Bar Ranch" manages to innovate in a stagnant genre of music.

In a recent interview with Swedish newspaper Expressen, Motorhead drummer Mikkey Dee shared his thoughts on former band mate Michael "Wurzel" Burston, who sadly passed away on Saturday. An excerpt from the interview reads:
"He wrote damn good Motörhead riffs. I remember that I missed that when he was not there. I missed the simple classic Motörhead riffs. They were never written after that. They left with him. He was wonderful, he was really funny. There was a lot of rock and roll in the old man."
A statement from the group's management released on behalf of Motorhead read: More...
Mexico is an enormous country just like our own, composed of 31 states and the Federal District. And like us, their music scene is exploding with bands and talent. Besides some of the bigger acts that have made a name for themselves over the years like Shub Niggurath, Cenotaph and Transmetal (a band once produced by Eric Greif) - not enough is heard with the requisite frequency about this active scene in Mexico. There are dozens of metropolitan areas all throughout this country that have metal bands, and there are several record labels that have been spawned to release this vast amount of groups. The interest in Mexican metal was no doubt piqued in American listeners years ago when such acts as LA's Brujeria showed what a winning combo death metal in Spanish could be. In focusing on one scene from our neighbors in Mexico, we will look at some of the interesting bands that have been coming out of the northern metropolis of Monterrey.
Living in the desert southwest where all of my Mexican neighbors come from Michoaca, Tamaulipas or Guanajuato, it is only natural I have wanted to discover more about this country and it's music. While I've travelled to my share of border towns, which have their own energy and club scene and bars that have pools where you can play volleyball, the only way to truly experience this country is to go deeper south and start seeing all the pueblos and cities that start to have a purer Mexican identity amidst the colorful landscape. I've been to Tijuana, Nogales and Mexicali countless times, been hustled off the street by guys paid to get you into their bar, and enjoyed plenty of drinks while listening to loud thrash metal. But in order to get a truer picture of what the country has to offer, it is vital to go further in and start seeing the true essence of it all. You pass through countless towns as you go deeper into Mexico - almost all having a cathedral, soccer field and a bar within the same block while the locals are listening to their ranchera music. But you know somewhere down the street are a bunch of guys with metal t-shirts on rocking out to heavy tunes on their home stereo. Metal is big down there.
A couple hours southwest of McAllen, Texas is the picturesque city of Monterrey. It is hard to believe that Mexico's third largest metropolitan area (ninth largest city) is this close to the U.S. Driving the desolate chaparral outback to get there is half the fun. Mexico has a system of free roads and toll roads - "carreteras de cuota" - throughout most of this northern area. If you can pay the toll you get to drive on the 4-lane highway. If not, you drive on the free road alongside a produce truck that's falling apart and emitting black smoke. As I watched a man trying to sell his hand tools so he could pay the toll, I couldn't help but be reminded of that song "Caseta de Cobro" by El Tri (about a toll booth operator who steals half the money he collects, buying pot and taking vacations.) I've been stopped by cops on roads like this, and a ten dollar bill usually gets me out of a ticket. Too bad it's not like this in the U.S. In Mexico, the laws of the frontier still prevail, which is sometimes a pleasant departure from regimentation and bureaucracy. You've got to love the rugged outback and a sense of adventure, and that's one of the reasons to head down to cities like Monterrey.
Digression aside, Monterrey is far enough inland to be uniquely Mexican but close enough to the U.S. to hear faded radio station signals. What strikes you about it is how incredibly big it is. As it's located in the border state of Nuevo Leon, this city of 4.5 million people often gets overlooked as being "too gringo" and not having enough true Mexican culture. It has twice the per capita income as other cities in Mexico, an educated workforce - but a lot of strife like many of the northern areas due to the Gulf and Zeta cartels fighting for control despite President Felipe Calderon's drug war. Politics aside, the people of Monterrey pass their day by listening to either tejano/nortena music or different forms of rock and roll - but usually not both. The city has, to me, a rugged beauty in that high desert plains way with it's statuesque palm trees and the jutting outcropping known as the Cerro de la Silla mountain. It's a large commercial and industrial hub with plenty of businesses that export a variety of products (several multinational companies have headquarters down there, such as Nokia, GE and Toyota among the many) and contains several colleges like La Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon within it's permiter. Universities mean youth, ideology and music - hence helping create the musical renaissance over a decade ago. Metal bands have been thrashing here since the 80's, mind you, but in the past ten years the scene has really taken on a whole new life of it's own. More...
Guitarist Richard Lagergren of Swedish Heavy Metallers Portrait has a wry sense of humor. Some of his zingers: the document that contained his answers to my (emailed) questions was called “Portrait vs Metal Underground,” some of his answers are subtly cheeky, and his answer to my final question was not so subtle at all, but I could only read it in a deadpanned voice.
But beyond Lagergren’s comedic stylings, he took the time to answer a few questions for us, which we appreciate! Lagergren gives a unique perspective into Portrait’s style of trad metal, details on the recording process for recently released full length “Crimen Laesae Majestatis Divinae” (reviewed here), why Sweden seems to be in the middle of so many “revivals, and a few other golden tidbits. Enjoy!
Bloodofheroes: Let’s start with the obvious – what the heck does “Crimen Laesae Majestatis Divinae” mean?
Well it is Latin obviously, and can be roughly translated into “crime against the heavenly majesty”, or if you will, “blasphemy” or “sacrilege”. The term derives from early modern Sweden, where intentional blasphemy was regarded one of the most serious crimes one could commit, leading to death penalty. People like Portrait would be the first to the gallows of course.More...
