New Slayer Album Title Officially Announced

"Christ Illusion" has been confirmed as the title of the new Slayer album, it has been announced (not "The Final Six," as previously reported), and the CD's release date is now confirmed for August 8, 2006.

"Christ Illusion" is Slayer's first new studio album since 2001, and the first recorded by the band's original line-up - Kerry King/guitars; Tom Araya/bass, vocals; Jeff Hanneman/guitars; Dave Lombardo/drums - since 1990's "Seasons In The Abyss." "Christ Illusion" was produced by Josh
Abraham and executive produced by Rick Rubin, and will be released on Slayer's long-time label, Rubin's American Recordings/Warner Bros. Records.

"Christ Illusion" deals with familiar Slayer themes - god, religion, hate, and war. Song titles are "Flesh Storm," "Catalyst," "Eyes of the Insane," "Jihad," "Skeleton Christ," "Consfearacy," "Black Serenade," " Catatonic," "Cult," and "Supremist." According to Araya, "No one is going to be disappointed, it's going to blow everybody away. It's fast, heavy, and maybe faster than anything we've done before."

"It's a good mix of fast, brutal music and slower moodier stuff, it's pretty intense," added King. "It sounds like a damn Slayer record."

A core player in Slayer's history has also rejoined the team for the "Christ Illusion" project. Larry Carroll, who did the cover artwork for "Reign in Blood," "South of Heaven," and "Seasons In the Abyss," has painted an original piece for the "Christ Illusion" cover. Working only from the song titles and early lyrics, Carroll has produced a classic Slayer masterpiece - a portrait of the Christ - whose forearms have been chopped off - standing in an ocean of blood surrounded by floating, decapitated heads (likely the same one previously referenced here and here). Carroll created the painting on a 4-by-4-foot slab of wood using a combination of mediums. King already has placed dibs on ownership of the original wooden canvas.

Slayer will headline this summer's six-week-plus "Unholy Alliance Tour: Preaching To The Perverted," which features Lamb of God, Children of Bodom, Mastodon, and Thine Eyes Bleed, and kicks off at the Tweeter Center in Camden, NJ next Thursday, June 15. Confirmed tour dates are as follows: More...

Merendine Atomiche To Release "Raw" In August

Veteran Italian thrash metal stalwart Merendine Atomiche is prepared to present their most visceral and accomplished work to date: RAW. On August 21st, 2006, Mausoleum Records will unleash RAW on the world. This testament to the eleven year career of Merendine Atomiche is both a step forward in the evolution of the band, as well as an excellent point of introduction for those not yet acquainted with their music.

RAW is Merendine Atomiche’s second full length album. Their 2003 release Walk across fire, along with their demo, mini cd, and tribute to Metallica, established the band’s powerful sound, mixing a classic thrash metal style with elements of hardcore and pure heavy metal. RAW brings that style to the next level. “Despite good reviews and a positive response to our last record, we were not satisfied,” says drummer Luca Cerardi. “We wanted to do something even better. After two years of hard work, the result is RAW.” Lead guitarist David Bisson adds, “For me this album represents the new sound of Merendine Atomiche. A new beginning.”

RAW was produced by prominent metal guitarist Jack Frost, who has performed with Savatage, Seven Witches and many other bands. Frost is a very capable producer and helped Merendine Atomiche realize their full potential as a band.

The songs on RAW hold deep personal meanings for the members of Merendine Atomiche. “RAW is a great album to me because I lived each song,” says vocalist Luca Zandarin. Indeed, the band worked their fingers to the bone for two years in the studio to make sure that RAW would be the best album possible. “Our target is to let people feel what we felt when we were making these songs: thrash them, give them energy and let them enjoy the music as much as possible while sending a positive message,” says rhythm guitarist Luca Securo.

Perhaps bassist Dario Bianchi explains the point of the album best: “For me, RAW is not an album but a tale. A story about Merendine Atomiche as friends and as a band. Our experiences, our dreams and a musical trip into the life of five guys who are living a great experience through music can be heard with this album.”

Shadows Fall Frontman Discuss Label Change

SHADOWS FALL frontman Brian Fair recently spoke to MTV.com about jumping ship from Century Media Records to Atlantic for their forthcoming studio effort, tentatively due in early 2007.

"We were friends with [the folks at Century Media] before we signed with the label, and they definitely went above and beyond what we thought an indie label could possibly do," he said. "They did offer us a great deal, but we wanted to ... see if we could take it to another level.

"It was a tough decision, but one we felt we really needed to make. We've been together 10 years, so we came with a contract and we knew exactly what we wanted. If people weren't into that initial thing, we knew we could cut them off right away. We weren't settling. We were brutally honest right at the beginning, and it stopped a lot of those dinners right away.

"These labels knew they weren't signing BRITNEY SPEARS," Fair continued. "They were just getting a bunch of Ma--hole metalheads. We were just psyched to get some free pizza and beer."

CELTIC FROST's "comeback" effort, "Monotheist", has sold just under 2,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The group's first album in 13 years was produced by the band with Peter Tagtgren (HYPOCRISY, PAIN) and features 11 songs. The CD was released simultaneously in all territories in three different configurations, including a limited-edition digipak containing the bonus track "Temple Of Depression", and a vinyl LP with another bonus title, "Incantation Against You".

CELTIC FROST cancelled their scheduled appearance at the Rock Hard Festival in Gelsenkirchen, Germany Saturday night (June 3) after mainman Thomas Gabriel Fischer was rushed to the hospital, where "he was diagnosed with a kidney stone that was about to dislocate," according to the group's management. He has since been transferred to a Zurich hospital and is undergoing a kidney operation. "He is adamant that he will perform at Sweden Rock [festival] this coming weekend and also fulfill all other forthcoming festival dates," the management said in a press release.
