We've been talking with bands and fans everywhere to get their mosh pit stories. This week, Robert Triches, bassist of Swedish metal band The Quill shares a different perspective with our readers:
We've got a few very hardcore fans that follow us wherever we go when we're on tour. It's truly amazing to see familiar faces in the pit (yes, they're always up in front) night after night after night, no matter what. And you realise that if you yourself hauled your ass 500 miles since last night, so did they, and that really warms a roadworn heart. Well, maybe it's because we go on tour so seldom that people travel across Europe just to catch a show, I don't know. Or maybe it's just the show... I don't know, and it doesn't really matter. The love we guys in the band feel for our fans are borderline unhealthy. Thanks so much for your support... You know who you are.
The Quill is set to release their first new album in five years with "Full Circle," which is due out on July 26th, 2011 via via Metalville Records.
Be sure to check back every Tuesday for more pit stories.
I have to assume Bill LoNero does not like Yngwie Malmsteen. And that he’s not much into the ‘core that comes with breakdowns and all sorts of vocalist cops running around and all that. But he’s certainly found his niche as an instrumental metal band. After releasing his second full length, titled “J.F.L.,” on May 23 (reviewed here), Bill has a lot on his mind, including why he’s not a fan of widdly-widdly guitar playing, what equipment he used on the album, what the album title “J.F.L.” stands for and why you should give him a chance!
Fortunately for us here at Metal Underground, he took the (presumably quite a bit of) time to write fantastically deep answers to our email interview. So do Bill a solid and go grab your favorite Killswitch Engage album (kidding!) and enjoy! More...
Moonspell has posted behind-the-scenes footage online from the band's time recording the "Finisterra" video, which was taken off the "Memorial" album. You can check out the making-of clip in the player below.
Where precisely does heavy metal end and some other style of music begin? Without blast beats or hellish screams or showy solos, can an album still hold a metal fans attention? That's a question music lovers of many stripes can explore freely with "The Valley Path," the new 40 minute long single-track album from genre benders U.S. Christmas (USX).
The odd name may raise eyebrows, but the journey the music takes is far more serious than the title may lead on, and is well worth exploring by fans of heavier music. A song of mammoth (and trance-inducing) proportions, "The Valley Path" is a slowly winding and deliberate excursion into both nature and many different layers of music.
To explain the band's new album, vocalist and guitarist Nate Hall spoke at length with me about how the release ending up being one single track. Commenting on the recording of "The Valley Path," Nate expounded "It’s kind of hard to describe it but we’re driven by something that’s not entirely me or us. There’s something with music that’s kind of mysterious and you just sort of channel it sometimes and that’s how I felt with this. It’s real natural, like it’s supposed to happen that way." Below you can find a transcription of the entire conversation, in which Nate also discusses the geography that inspired the album, working with Neurot, his new solo album, and the "Slow Southern Steel" documentary. Svartsot has issued the following announcement about "Maledictus Eris," the band's upcoming album:
"We're proud to be able to release the cover artwork and track list for the third Svartsot album; Maledictus Eris. As previously announced, the album recounts the tale of the Black Death's incursion into Danish history from 1349 to 1350. The album begins the tale from just prior to the plague's arrival through to when the first bout relinquished its grasp, and focuses on the way the epidemic affected the population – from victim to survivor. We have taken more inspiration from medieval music than on previous albums, and the feel of the album in general has taken a darker and more emotive turn on this recording.
"We are extremely satisfied with the way this album has turned out and hope that the fans – both old and new – will take kindly to it. But at the same time, we should also make clear that this album is somewhat different to its predecessors, and not for the worse as far as we're concerned.
"We have a series of live dates in Denmark lined up for after the release, and hope to be able to add more European dates to the list soon. News on dates and leading up to the release will be posted as soon as we have it."
The track listing is as follows: More...

Warrior.) Fischer has spoken about the festival (at which they also hold an autograph signing) by saying:
"It is an immense honor and a privilege to be asked back to perform at the Rock Hard Festival, especially given my previous band Celtic Frost's extremely regrettable inability to fulfil its earlier commitment to the festival. The Rock Hard Festival is an event unlike any other in the scene, both due to the audience and those behind the festival. We will pay homage to that fact with Triptykon by playing a concert which has never been performed before and, in this form, will likely never be repeated again."

But, during the near three years I've been away, my situation has changed to the point where I'm able to fully concentrate on the band again.
"We've gone straight to work on the new record, which Leon already had a lot of ideas down for and so far it's been the easiest writing process we've ever had, which is really promising."

Swedish metal act The Project Hate MCMXCIX has posted the following update online;
"To beat [this year's] 'Bleeding The New Apocalypse (Cum Victriciis In Manibus Armis)' will be a monumental task, one we will, of course, accomplish.
"I am currently working on a huge bunch of things music wise and at the moment there's tons of stuff, song sketches and ideas to continue to work with, with one of these ideas already clocking in at over six minutes — meaning it looks like this one will be the first one completed for the next recording.
"We really do not have any schedules as for when to record this and it will take the time it takes to make it all answer to the standards I have for The Project Hate MCMXCIX. We haven't even discussed with Season Of Mist if they will release the next album or not; it will all show eventually. What we do know, though, is that we are determined to create another insane monster of apocalyptic visions, brutality and beauty."

Primus bassist Les Claypool commented on the album, the first studio release from the act in 11 years, by saying;
"If I were to look at all of our records, it seems like this is reminiscent of the early stuff. Obviously, with Jay [Lane, drummer] there’s a newness to it, but because he left the band right before we recorded our first record, his approach has an eerie harkening to the old 'Frizzle Fry' days. There wasn’t a lot of pre-thought to this as much as, ‘Oh here we are, we should make a record.' I’ve been playing with Jay quite a lot over the past 10 years and we have an intuitive bond, so for me he was a natural choice to be back in the mix."
