Each week in Unearthing the Metal Underground, we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. This week, I am exploring the Michigan metal scene. With this column, I am not only discussing a brief history of each band and the sounds they create, I will also show links between the three bands. Just like the death metal that emerged from Stockholm, Sweden, the thrash from California’s northern bay area and the hardcore from New York City, Michigan’s death and black metal scene is one of interchangeable members.
On an international level, Michigan’s largest city has a reputation as “Detroit Rock City” or “Motown.” The city has produced a large number of Rock And Rock Hall of Fame members. In reference to the more extreme rock styles of black and death metal, though, the mid-southern region near the capital of Lansing has better soil for producing the Devil’s music.
Lansing’s Summon is one of the earliest black metal bands in the U.S. Although the group formed in 1991, it didn’t take off until 1995. From 1992-1994 former Lucifer’s Hammer guitarist Sean “Xaphan” Peters (guitar, vocals) joined with Chas “Necromodeus” Schoals (bass, vocals), Mark Hague (drummer) and Jeff “Tchort” Elrod (R.I.P.) in the black-doom band Masochist (another important underground USBM act). In ’95, Peters, Schoals and Hague left Masochist for Summon, while Elrod formed another black metal group, Wind of the Black Mountains.
Summon made its first recording, “Fire Turns Everything…Black” demo, as the three piece. This demo served as a blue print for the next couple of recordings. Released originally as a cassette tape, the group re-released it in CD format. Later Summon recordings featured revisions of tracks featured on the demo. The hellish screaming chorus of Schoals and Peters, catchy tremolo picking, chugging thrash breaks and whammy bar solos make hitting the stop button difficult on this recording. More...

Hollow Demise is currently streaming the song "Darkness Turns The Faithful Blind" online through the band's Facebook page. Hollow Demise also issued the following statement about the creation of the band:
"Hollow Demise was conceived in the thought of resurrecting ‘solid old school values’ from the glowing embers of the thrash scene. The present line-up was formed as a reaction to all that has come before and they bring together a lurid mix of death, black, grind and heavy metal to add the body to their skeleton of thrash metal's great bastion of legendary metal heroes.
"Hell's fires have been kept well stoked by the band hailing from the South East. Dedicated to a brutal live intensity, they are prepared to unleash themselves on the world. Be part of history as Hollow Demise is coming with full force in 2011!"

Lambgoat.com is currently hosting the premiere of "Watch It Burn," the opening track off Unearth's forthcoming "Darkness In The Light" full-length. Vocalist Trevor Phipps comments:
"'Watch It Burn' is the lead track from Darkness In The Light because we felt it captured the aggression and heaviness of the album while also staying true to our core sound from our earlier records. This is one of the only tunes without a guitar solo, but the harmonies are there to mix around one of the heaviest choruses we've ever written. The song is angry, fast and in-your-face while also allowing for a melodic bridge late in the song much like some of our older material. Lyrically, it is an anti-extremist song.
"It attacks both the left and right of the political spectrum while also calling into question extremist religious groups and their influence on our culture. All these political and religious extremists seem to manage to do is splinter society and turn people against each other that otherwise likely wouldn't be at odds. Basically we can put aside some meager differences and work to better ourselves or we can keep heading down this destructive path and eventually 'Watch It Burn.'"
"Darkness In The Light" is sheduled for release in North America on July 5th via Metal Blade Records, and the 11-track long player was recorded at Zing Studios in Westfield, Massachusetts with producer/Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz and mixed at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida by Mark Lewis (The Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel, Trivium, et al). Sitting in on drums during the recording was Justin Foley of Killswitch Engage/Blood Has Been Shed.

"So what can you expect from the new Threat Signal record? Well… basically we said lets write the heaviest fuckin record we possibly can. We've been experimenting with 7 string guitars and drop tunings since the early days, so we have decided to write almost the whole new record that way. We are headed back to the Under Reprisal days but with bigger balls.

"Nevertheless, we want you here either denied the newest stuff, because a lot has happened in the time. There was a lineup change for us, our second guitarist Kai has left the band and was first replaced by our friend Timbo, but this is only temporary. However, we now have a very good replacement found and that Andre, the singer from Fight Your Creation.
"Then we were in the studio with the guys from DP Tone Records which, as we see, have done their job very very nice. There we have 4 songs for our EP 'No Return' included, which you can listen to or simply download for free here.
"Furthermore, we have also modified the Myspace page a bit. The moment now looks very ähmm shit ..... and we still consider whether it is worth it to make new again. So, I think that's it with the most important things."

Germany's Diabolos Dust has officially inked a deal with Massacre Records. A statement the from the label about the band's history reads as follows:
"Diabolos Dust exists under its name since 2007. After several lineup changes, today's lineup looks like this: Vocalist Jürgen (ex-Flood Of Ages, El-k-mino), bassist Roland (ex-Sengaya) as well as the two founding members Toni (guitar) and Stefan (drums). Diabolos Dust play tough 80's metal, but the band isn't a copy of other bands in this genre.
"Diabolos Dust uses the trademarks of this era and make the sound unique with their
catchy and variable songwriting. The sound is also characterized by various influences from the metal scene and so every song is a piece of art on it's own.
"Monstrous power drumming and a driving bass provide the foundation for a solid guitar work and powerful vocals. With a rhythm section that knows how to create pressure and polyphonic shouting Diabolos Dust's independent trademark's created."
You can also check out the music the band has to offer by heading over to the official Diabolos Dust MySpace profile.

I’ve only heard half-remembered memories about this festival. I really had no idea what to expect about the stage lay-out, the area of town, the people, or the bar situation. As I walked down the hill to Sonar, I gradually saw the small bunch of metalheads walking in to see the first band Witchaven. I entered the main hall and followed the crude, hand-written signs explaining where the stage was in the dark, labyrinthine building. Entering into the main room for the first time was like stepping into a metal dream; coming from the hot, sunny outdoors to a cold, pitch black massive room with seemingly no end and seeing an awesome band already in progress with ultra bright flashing lights interrupting your vision and furthering the illusion of this chamber.
