The guitar wielding goblinoids in A Band of Orcs recently revealed the cover artwork for an upcoming new self-titled album, and now they have launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for releasing a double vinyl picture disc edition. Check out the details on the fundraiser at this location, and the band commented:
It's bold. It's stupid. It doesn't make sense, and that's why we're doing it. We have always been entranced by the mythical visionscapes on LP's and picture discs of the heavy metal greats like Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Slayer. So that's what we're doing. CDs are too small for the epicness of A Band of Orcs debut concept album about slaying giants in the home realm of Hirntodia...
The very best way to present our album is in a double vinyl picture disc set, complete with a 12-page art & lyrics booklet. To hell with what makes sense in today's digital music environment! Not like your human world makes any sense anyway. We believe in the traditional values of metal--great visual art, spectacular music from start to finish, and well, general epicness. What's more epic than a double vinyl picture disc set?!?!?
If you don’t have a record player, don’t worry, all the sets will come with a download code for the digital version of the album. You can keep this picture-disc artifact as a relic of bygone times, or you can simply pledge your support for a digital copy and forego the record set altogether. Either way, you contribute to raising the money necessary to help us pay the production costs of this ancient metal practice of actually making "a record."More...
Germany's Nachtblut defies the conventions of extreme music, freely mixing electronic sounds with black and symphonic metal, and that melding of opposing musical worlds has reached new heights with the band's latest release "Dogma" (reviewed here).
Vocalist Askeroth recently corresponded with Metalunderground.com to give fans a deeper look into the world of Nachtblut's dark metal, including signing on with Napalm Records and recording the latest album. Check out the full interview below for a run-down on the band's history, an explanation of the some of the lyrics, and to see Askeroth's incredulity when I mentioned that some of the music feels like it would make a great video game soundtrack.
Helsinki-based metallers Dead Shape Figure entered D-Studio in Nurmijärvi, Finland to record their third album. The production for the album is being handled by Xy from Swiss act Samael. The band commented:
"This is the first time ever Dead Shape Figure has used a real producer and done a proper preproduction. It is a fact you can really hear when the album is ready. We are super psyched about Mr Xy's dedication for these new songs.
"The preproduction-stage took a week, 12 hours a day. That period with Mr. Xy was mentally really interesting yet challenging. He made us push ourselves as a band further and deeper than we would normally go. Xy made us act as a band and not as a mob."
While recording the new album, Dead Shape Figure will also play selected festival shows during the summer. The band added, "We were not suppose to play any shows before the release of the next album but we got offered a few summer shows so we thought why not?"
Alabama death metal band Chaos Inception is streaming a third song from its brand new album "The Abrogation," which was just released on Lavandome Productions. PureGrainAudio is doing an exclusive stream of the track "Pazuzu Eternal," which you can access by going here.
The Abrogation was recorded and mixed by Lance Wright at Stargate Studios in Huntsville, AL during Fall/Winter 2011 and mastered by Brian Elliot at Mana Studios in January 2012. The cover art was created by Italian painter Paolo Girardi and depicts a vision relating to the last days of humanity, in connection with the musical side of the album.
GunShyAssassin.com has hooked up with Digital Media Records and Mortal Infinity for the exclusive premiere of the track "Radial Response" off the German thrash act's forthcoming album, "District Destruction." Digital Media Records will be releasing that album on June 15th, which was recorded at Sound Lodge Studios with Joerg Uken (God Dethroned, Dew-Scented, etc).
"District Destruction" is the debut release for Mortal Infinity, and the band plans to play numerous shows in Europe (Metalfest Austria with Megadeth) in support of it. Head over to this location to stream "Radical Response."
Quebec label PRC Music has issued a statement about the passing of noted metal guitarist Steeve Hurdle. Steeve was 41 when he passed away on May 20th due to complications from surgery. Hurdle was last known for the two bands that he was a founding member of, Purulence and Negativa, but he first gained fame for playing guitar with Quebecois band Gorguts on its third release, "Obscura." He was also a member of Blind Witchery, Chaos and Infinite Wonder. Here is the statement that Remi from PRC Music has issued:
"Losing a friend like Steeve is a shock for me. We knew, cheered for and supported each other for the last 23 years. Steeve was wholehearted: a true musician, a true passionate being. He was gearing up for the next chapter of NEGATIVA. We were discussing it after deciding to reedit the first mini-CD: studio, promo, events, concerts, etc. We were getting ready to work together, just like in the good old days of PURULENCE. I was really excited at this perspective, but mostly, I was looking forward to sharing laughs, ideas and all these moments where you know you are at the right place, the right moment with the right person.'
Thank you for crossing my path, Steeve. Rest in peace, Brother." Rémi - PRC MUSIC
Chicago heavy metal outfit Dirge Within will embark on the Shockwave Festival 2012 this summer in support of sophomore release, "There Will Be Blood." Established to give metal fans a lower cost festival option this season, the trek on Shockwave 2012 will commence on July 6th in Seattle and features an assorted lineup of artists, including Fear Factory, Voivod, Cattle Decapitation, Misery Index, Revocation, Havok and more.
Commented Dirge Within guitarist, Shaun Glass, “Shockwave 2012! Holy S! We are so excited to be on this sick, new tour July-August, featuring beyond diverse acts and killer bands like Havok, Revocation, cult legends, Voivod, and the innovative future metal sounds of Fear Factory, who we have toured with in the past. We can't wait to meet all of you at the merch table etc., so come early and destroy with us!”
Slipknot has posted a series of clips online relating to "Antennas to Hell," which is due out July 17th, 2012. The band has yet to officially announce the exact nature of the videos but watch this space for further details.
Whitechapel has announced a full European tour for October and November of 2012. The Tennessee outfit will be supporting August Burns Red and The Devil Wears Prada.
Whitechapel's guitarist Alex Wade adds: "We're really excited for this tour. It will be our first proper European club tour since Trivium in 2010. We're eager to get back and play some new songs off of our new self-titled record!"
More dates will be announced shortly, and Whitechapel will release a new self-titled album June 19th in North America and June 15th/18th via Metal Blade Records in Europe.

An album launch is currently being put together for August at The Prague Hotel in Thornbury, with further details TBA. Check out a teaser for the album in the player below.
Sevendust and Call Me No One drummer Morgan Rose will join The Infinite Staircase in the studio in the coming weeks to begin work on the band’s sophomore effort.
Brothers Lenny & Jeff Cerzosie have been working pre-production at their home recording facility, Majickly Malicious Studios in Staten Island, New York but will begin tracking the new album with Rose at Architekt Studios in Butler, New Jersey in the coming weeks.
The Infinite Staircase released its debut album, "The Road Less Taken," in March of 2009 before embarking on "The Black Label Bash" tour with Black Label Society, Sevendust, and Dope. The album was mixed by Blues Saraceno (Poison) and featured guest appearances by Saraceno and Earl Slick (David Bowie).
After a year-long hiatus following an ongoing dispute with former drummer Paris Bierk (son of ex-Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach), and a few sporadic and special acoustic performances, this is the first official announcement of the band’s continuity. For more info on The Infinite Staircase, head over to the band's official Facebook profile.
Metal Blade Records is thrilled to announce the signing of German death metal act Over Your Threshold. The label issued the following statement:
"Arising from Munich, Germany Over Your Threshold began playing live in 2007. After numerous gigs with renowned death metal acts like Obscura, Deadborn and Hokum, the band made a name for itself in the local metal scene. Over Your Threshold is known for tight playing and an expressive performance at live-shows.
"The first record, Progress In Disbelief (EP), was self-released in 2008. Over the years the band's concept of Death Metal gained ground and its actual sound is enriched with a great diversity of musical elements. Influenced by different Death Metal bands (reaching from the 80's up to now) Over Your Threshold's music combines progressive death metal with a bit of thrash and some fusion components.
"In 2011, Over Your Threshold entered the Woodshed Studio in Landshut, Germany to record their first full-length album, entitled Facticity. The sound of Facticity is not only more blasting but also more technical, interspersed with energetic Death Metal riffing as well as melodic acoustic guitars. It's enriched by brute-force blast beats, Thrash Metal, jazzy harmonics and the distinct tones of smooth, fretless bass. Furthermore, the band recruited guest musicians Steffen Kummerer (Obscura, Thulcandra) and Jonas Fischer (Hokum, Ex-Obscura) to jazz up their debut album. Facticity was mixed and mastered by V. Santura (Triptykon, Dark Fortress)." More...

Lifeforce Records has officially signed a deal with Finnish act The Chant. "Since I was in touch with Jussi Hämäläinen about his other very promising band Hanging Garden for a while already it was only logical I gave The Chant a fair chance and I must admit I was sold after the first listen!" comments Lifeforce Records owner Stefan Lüdicke. "Being a huge fan of similar bands such as Anathema, Katatonia, or Paradise Lost, my decision to want to work with The Chant was made within a glimpse of an eye and their upcoming album 'A Healing Place' is on heavy rotation in my stereo since then!"
The Chant is a seven-member band from Finland. The current line-up was formed in 1999, but it took some years and a couple of demo-recordings, before band’s debut album "Ghostlines" was released in 2008, followed by 2010' "This is The World We Know."
"A Healing Place" is band’s third record and their first for Lifeforce Records. The label commented: "The majority of the songs were recorded by The Chant itself and showcase a band going deeper into an even more complex and layered sound with unexpected twists and an arcane ambience. The Finns take their listeners into a place where they have to fumble in grey mist, before being able to see all the shades of colour. The agonizing sides of life have to be faced, before being able to clean oneself from them. The seemingly positive exterior of 'A Healing Place' hides bitter and dismal moods. More...

Defox Records and Invincible Records are proud to announce they will be releasing the debut album from Indonesian death metal band Demeanour. Defox Records commented:
"This band was founded in Jakarta in mid 2010, and plays a mixture of classic death metal with aggressive, powerful, emphatic growls, primordial song structures and riffs clarify the brute and wild of the music.
"Demeanour's new album titled 'Innerself' will be available ONLY through digital music stores and is scheduled for June 2012."
As "Negative Black," the third LP from Germany's sludge juggernaut Black Shape of Nexus, nears its North American street date this Tuesday June 5th via Exile on Mainstream, today the entire album is streaming via The Obelisk right here. The following press release was also issued about the band:
"Surging with eighty minutes of Black Shape of Nexus' own brew of some of the most down-tempo sludge metal on the planet, Negative Black marks a new step for the band, carving a path into their foreseeable future. While the outfit already bears the reputation for unfurling some of the most destructive but still coherently-flowing sludge metal available, incorporating outside elements of crust, black metal and soundscape persuasion at times, Negative Black surges to even deeper caverns of auditory obliteration, pummeling you with painfully slow doom and finishing you off with acrid, harsh drones, and giving down-tempo a whole new meaning."
The track listing is as follows:
3. 60 WV
7. NEG. BLACK
Nearly 20 years after its original release, cult-legend Mortiis’ “Ånden som Gjorde Opprør” will receive a limited edition vinyl re-release this summer via the Italian label Ordo MCM. The following press release was issued about the album:
"The record, recorded in 1994, is from what is now known as 'Era1' in Mortiis’ evolution, when the singly-named solo artist focused on creating epic synth tracks that evoked images of desolate landscapes and eerie atmospheres. Mortiis’ music was a huge departure from the black metal scene he was largely involved in during his mid-teens, yet it retained a dark ambience that still appealed to the black metal elite, as well as fans of more experimental music and the gothic crowd.
"Taking a cue from experimental/progressive acts like Tangerine Dream, Mortiis threw typical song structure to the wayside in favor of synth-laden soundscapes, of a length and grandeur that would limit 'Ånden som Gjorde Opprør' to just two songs, 'En mørk Horisont' and 'Visjoner av en Eldgammel Fremtid.'"
“Tangerine Dream pretty much singlehandedly got me into making music on synths,” Mortiis said. “I was into stuff like Coil, Kraftwerk, Sleep Chamber, and Throbbing Gristle as well, but Tangerine Dream was the big thing for me.”
The re-release of “Ånden som Gjorde Opprør” will be limited to 500 copies, with 250 available in standard black and 250 in special swirl-colored vinyl. More...

Female-fronted heavy metal act A Sound of Thunder has issued the following announcement about recording a new full-length album:

Today Dew-Scented has posted the first single taken off new album "Icarus." Check out the landing page at this location and stream the album's first song "Sworn To Obey." The track is also available in the player below.
Dew-Scented vocalist Leif Jensen comments about Sworn To Obey as follows: “’Sworn To Obey’ was an obvious candidate to open up the new album and it was actually one of the very last tracks we finished in the songwriting sessions for ‘Icarus’. Already when working on the final arrangements for the song, we knew it would become an extremely heavy and catchy piece! Kicking in after the anthem-like ‘Hubris’ instrumental intro, ‘Sworn To Obey’ is a sweet punch in the gut in true Dew-Scented style and smoothly helps to set the album’s pace in the right fashion! I simply love the lead-guitar part and the crazy bass-lines afterwards. I’m sure this one will be real fun to play live…”
The album's track listing is as follows:
02. Sworn to Obey
03. Thrown to the Lions
04. Storm Within
05. Gleaming Like Silver
06. By My Own Hand
07. The Fall of Man
09. Destined to Collapse
10. A Final Procession

Rick Jimenez of Long Island act This is Hell has checked in with a European road report through PropertyofZack.com. An excerpt from the tour blog follows:
One of the few things weirder than mainland Europe is the eastern part of mainland Europe… Even the Westwrn part of Eastern Europe. With that said it was nice to get to Austria. We needed to get some supplies and allergy medicine and such before the show so we drove into the city of Vienna and searched for an hour until our UK friend Jamie that’s been filming for a new music video this tour remembered it was some Euro holiday and that’s why everything was closed. How helpful.
Headed to “the arena” to load in, eat Euro rider stuff and get in a sufficient but not preferred workout. Preshow playlist was awesome. The set started off slow and wound up being insane. Best of the 4 times we’ve been to the arena. I think we did 3 encores because they wouldn’t let us off stage. Fuck it I’ll play for as long as people wanna hear shit any goddamn day, I’m not afraid to overdue it. Towards the end each of the rhino guys as well as Jamie the videographer and Dave the driver got caught in a mosh. Wrote some cool shit on the wall next to my bunk for the night and finally got a fucking shower.More...

Austin, Texas-based metal band Dead Earth Politics has made the following announcement regarding a major lineup shift:
"It is with heavy hearts that Dead Earth Politics announces the departure of our colleague, fellow artist and brother, Ernie Clark. Citing separate personal endeavors, Clark must make his leave. The split is completely amicable and the remaining members of D.E.P. wish him nothing but the best and intend to keep plowing through the masses. We invite any able bodied man, woman and child to our upcoming show on June 16 at the Dirty Dog Bar in Austin, Texas. This is to be Ernie’s farewell show and likely your last chance to caress his righteous skullet!
"Additionally, Dead Earth Politics wishes to very proudly announce not one, but two new guitarists into our devious fold: Craig Rundels and Tim Driscoll! Rundels has been sharpening the axe for twenty-eight years, having had private instruction under Paul Gilbert (Racer X, Mr. Big) and collaborated with George Lynch (Lynch Mob) and Bob Kulick (W.A.S.P., Meatloaf). Driscoll is a graduate from the Berklee College of Music and has been wielding his blade for seventeen years. He immigrated to Austin from Boston, Massachusetts where he was ingrained in the metal scene there – notably with the bands Forgo Famine and Pulse.
"This new lineup infuses Dead Earth Politics with a completely new outlook on its musical direction, and with this new arsenal we are poised to deliver a new payload to the Austin metal scene and beyond.
"We wish our brother-in-arms, Ernie, the very best, but our eyes remain on the prize and our crosshairs hold steady. 2012 is a year of changes for Dead Earth Politics and we aim to wield those changes to our greatest advantage."
To learn more about Dead Earth Politics, visit the band's official website here. They are currently working on the followup to their 2010 full-length debut "The Weight Of Poseidon."

It was announced last month that Urgehal guitarist/vocalist Trondr Nefas had passed away, and the band has now issued the following statement about his death:
"Trondr Nefas, our dearest friend and companion for more than 20 years, suddenly passed away last month. He died a peaceful and natural death at one of his favorite places, surrounded by woods and crystal lakes.
"Thanks for all the years with friendship, music and madness. For the good times and the bad times.
"Through your dark devotion for black metal, you have inspired so many. You were a true pioneer. We will miss you, but never forget you, because your legacy will live on.
"Our deepest sympathy goes to Trond's fiancée Octavia, and both of their families. We appreciate all of the condolences and support given to us after his tragic death.
"Sammen var vi dynamitt!!!"

"'Deconsecra†ed' will give you a sneak preview of our DVD that we plan to release in December and features additional footage shot by photographers Andy Watson, Doug Rimington and Matt Alston of Sanctorum.

Though many touring bands are starting to make inroads in China, with most of them bypassing government censors by way of venturing to the Middle Kingdom on tourist visas rather than foolishly attempting to secure an elusive performance visa, few metal bands from China are able to tour outside the country due to the government’s travel restrictions placed on the Chinese people.
“How can that be?” you might ask. “Chinese tourists are everywhere these days, spending RMB like they’re going out of style.” Well, what you might not know is that each and every one of these tourists is only allowed to become well-heeled because they’ve posted what is essentially a large cash bond that is meant to ensure their return to China. And as we all know, being in a metal band and the ability to post a large cash bond are pretty much mutually exclusive.
Getting out is made all the more difficult when you’re a musician playing what is regarded by many authorities in China as a dangerous and highly disruptive form of music. Hell, some bands in China even get banned by the government from playing in their own country, which is exactly what happened to Ordnance, a modern-era Sepultura-esque band from the capital. Ordnance drew the Communist Party’s ire for its overtly subversive lyrical content, and now can basically only perform in the guitar player’s own venue, 13 Club in Beijing. Freedom of expression? Not in Mao’s house.
As another case in point, Painkiller magazine, the nation’s top metal publication, has sponsored a national Wacken Open Air Battle for local bands for the past few years, with the winner gaining a spot at the venerable German festival to beat all festivals. However, in the history of this competition only one band has thus far managed to secure the right to travel outside China and make it to the fest, while the other winners have had to resign themselves to merely enjoying the pride of winning.
Luckily, though, none of this can stop us from reporting on some bands from China that are worth checking out, all of whom made an appearance at the 2012 rendition of the Wacken Battle. We’ll start in Beijing on this week’s installment of Unearthing the Metal Underground.
Ready to Die
Female-fronted five-piece Ready to Die plays an old school, filthy brand of death metal that would fit right on the Ibex Moon label alongside acts like Funerus, or decimating the stage at St. Vitus in New York with Disma. Taking cues from Obituary, Bolt Thrower, and other plodding death metal bands of similar, sludgy taste, Ready to Die is a band that places its focus on simplicity, opting for the one-punch knockout riff rather than the overwhelming jabs and slaps of abject technicality.
The band’s front woman has a growl that could rip the short and curlies off of any of her male counterparts, as can be heard on their lo-fi demo that’s currently streaming online. The production really captures the overall atmosphere of death metal’s early days. This band is one to watch in the Middle Kingdom, and yet another reason to wish that it could be easier for bands from China to actually tour outside their home country. More...
Sweden's Månegarm has issued the following announcement about splitting with the band's violin player:
"Due to lack of motivation, violin player Janne Liljekvist will leave MÅNEGARM on permanent basis. It's of course unfortunate after almost 15 years together, but it's also an unsustainable situation if 1 out of 5 can't find the motivation and put the effort into the band that is needed to move forward.
"However; MÅNEGARM will definitely move on as planned and this will have no impact on our music at all.
"The work with the new album goes on as planned and we can promise you that it will be a killer! The mighty wolf WILL strike again, this time harder than ever before!"
You can also check out the band's music by heading over to the Månegarm MySpace profile.
