It's been sixteen years since Cattle Decapitation released their first creation unto the realm of metal. And since that time, they've gotten a reputation for spouting their beliefs with no regard for who might be offended by them. In particular, people have focused tightly on one topic that the band was unabashed about; the consumption of meat. However, vocalist Travis Ryan does not like to the attention paid to it these days as the rest of his lyrics get lost. I had a chance to talk with Travis before he heads out on another U.S. and European tour to talk about their new album, why he does not like to focus on animal rights, and where to get the best Mexican food. Saturday, June 2, 2012 offered a much different pace than the previous night. Where Friday night’s lineup played deliberate rhythms and struck chords that hung in the air like an ominous fog, Saturday’s day show at Beerland focused on speed. D-beats, blast beats, double picked chords partly characterized the crossover minded bands such as Midnight and Toxic Holocaust who packed a house of enthusiastic punks and metal heads.
Packing Beerland’s sloped construction did not take long. I arrived at the venue around opening time at 3:30 to find their small smoking area nearly full. I was not at the venue for long before their staff started turning away people. When someone left, someone entered. Once again, due to the staggering amount of attendees, the stuffiness of the club and humidity, I took numerous breaks from watching each band. More...

Snowy Shaw of symphonic metal act Therion has posted a new video update online titled "The Blog Of Heavy Metal: Part 1 - 25th anniversary of Therion." Check out the clip below. Therion also commented last week on a canceled El Salvador show:
"The concert in El Salvador was cancelled by the local promoter because of so severe technical problems that a concert could not be performed. There were also a very serious security issue that delayed everything very badly. While it is always very sad to have a show cancelled, we agreed with the promotors decision, there was no other way. So we agreed on making a statement for the local media, where we of course expressed our desire to come back and do the show at some future date.
"It was suggested that we should return shortly after Mexico, but that was not possible as we already had tickets booked home and had other obligations booked (for example orchestral recordings for the new album). It would not be possible to play any concerts at all until after the summer.
"However, to fly in the band from all over the world to do just one concert is a very expensive project. So we have serious doubts that it will happen. Especially as the local promoter still owe our Latin American booking agent money. So we are at the moment very pessimistic about the possibilities of coming back anytime soon and we would advice any fan with a ticket to the cancelled show to claim back the money and not wait for a replacement show. We would love to come back and give our fans the show that they were looking for, but due to the mentioned reasons we don't see it happening in the near future. We are of course sorry for this mess, but it's beyond our control and out of our responsibilities." More...
Prague based act Apostate has issued the following announcement about officially recruiting a new guitarist:
"I think it's time to finally make an official statement: as some of you might know we have been playing without a permanent guitarist since August, 2011.
"There were shows with just one guitar, there was a wonderful tour with Slayc from Change of Loyalty, but in March, 2012 we finally find a new member - Denis. He has played a few shows with us, joined us in our trip to Switzerland and has already become a vital part of Apostate.
"I'm sure you have seen him in our new video for 'The Town.' Welcome him to our family at Facebook."
Godsmack announced today that due to continued vocal issues with singer Sully Erna, the band is forced to cancel the remaining dates on its currently scheduled European tour.
According to a statement, Erna was examined by throat specialists in the U.S. yesterday and on the advice of his doctors has been advised to not sing for the next several weeks to allow time for his vocal chords to heal. The current tour marked the first time the band had toured Europe in nearly nine years, and Gosmack was only able to perform two of the fourteen scheduled dates in Europe.
In an e-mail from Sully, he writes:
"Sorry Europe. Seems like we can't catch a break there lately. London you were one of the best crowds we've played to in a very long time.... Belgium, you were awesome as well. As for the rest of you in Europe that we weren't able to reach, I promise you we'll be back!! For now it's lots of rest and fluids for me until my vocal specialist clears me to sing again. My deepest apologies Europe! You'll see us again. Thanks for your support and understanding."

In a rebuttal interview on Rolling Stone.com, former Queensrÿche singer Geoff Tate, who was recently sacked from the band, fired a return volley towards the band he was in for thirty years. In the interview, Tate stated that the band fired him via legal letter to his lawyer and that an ongoing lawsuit is in the works which will "get ugly."
The following are some excerpts from the full article:
On the firing:
Q: Do you know why they decided to push you out of the band?
Well, I think it's economically driven, mostly. I'm a 25 percent holder in our companies. I think it's just business in their minds. Cut me out and then split 25 percent and hire some young guy that's gonna work for a weekly wage so they make more money. It's just ridiculous.
Q: You'd think they'd make more money with you in the band. Now they're going to be presumably splitting up a smaller pie.
It doesn't may any sense. [Laughs] Neither does taking a very successful merchandising company and giving it over to somebody else and then paying them more money to run it. It's bad business. It's short-sightedness, and it's just ridiculous.
Q: It would seem to many that firing the lead singer is sort of a suicide move. When people buy a ticket to a concert they tend to want to hear the original singer.
It doesn’t make any sense at all. It's typical of these guys to have a very short-sighted look on everything. Why on earth would they cancel all remaining Queensryche shows? How are they gonna survive economically? And then, by that action, you’re completely alienating the promoters, who you work with closely to book shows for you. So now the promoter is left holding the bag, and that doesn’t make the promoter want to work with you again. So here they fire everybody in our organization and don’t hire anybody to take care of the business, all the websites, all of our merchandising companies, all that stuff. There’s nobody running it right now. They locked it all up, and there’s nobody running that stuff. Then they fired our publicist, our booking agent, they canceled all the shows, so now they have no income. What are they doing?More...
It doesn’t make any sense at all. And that’s what’s so difficult to stomach about the whole thing. If they had some sort of grand plan that all made sense, I could understand. [Laughs] And I’m forced to engage in a lawsuit with them now. This is not something I want to do at all. I want to make records and I want to tour and live a creative life. I don’t want to be bogged down in some legal hassle. My God, but they’re forcing me into it. I have no other way to go. I can’t give up my life’s work and walk away from it. These are my ideas, my concepts, my life, that I’m writing about. What are they gonna do – hand it to some kid to sing?

Formed by vocalist Kevin Sharp, bassist/vocalist Dave Whitworth, drummer Shayne Huff and guitarists Bill Kelliher and Mike Brennan, the band disbursed a 1000-run CD pressing of Draw Back A Stump on their own last year. Our dear friend Matt (from Sanctorum) will be filling in for these shows, he was my first choice and I know he will kick ass! The band set the bar high for "Bleed And Scream." Guitarist Magus Henriksson commented:
“We knew we had to do everything better on this album. If we couldn’t have achieved that we never would have released it! But boy did it turn out well! When it was taking shape we realized this was to be a monster of an album.
"“Every song has qualities as a single. Erik´s vocals are way better than ever. The guitar-sound is just awesome! The whole production is just in your face. It has something for everyone in it! We worked so hard at making this record that it drove us nearly nuts and made us wanna scream, but now it’s your turn to 'bleed & scream'."
Vocalist/guitarist Erik Martensson added: "With Eclipse we never think of what other people want or expect from us. We write for ourselves and make the music we love to listen to. If I'd think of a perfect album this is how it will sound! And once the album was written the recording process went pretty smooth as we knew exactly what goal we aimed for. I'd say it's our own pimped version of the classic hard rock we grew up listening to."

"For the reason of cancellation, here is the statement we received from our agent Darkdimensions in Latin America: 'Unfortunately the Leaves' Eyes and Atrocity Latin-American Tour which was supposed to happen this July has to be cancelled. The main reason is that Show Factory (Ecuador promoter) couldn't fulfill the needed requirements, which sadly made it not possible for the tour to happen this time as the shows were connected to each other. Denver thrashers Silencer will release "The Great Bear" on September 25th. The album is the group's third full-length release and its first concept record. The band has this to say about the music of "The Great Bear," an approach that took the band back to its heavy metal roots.
Silencer has followed a steady progression of thrash through the years, bordering on the extreme on recent releases. On this album we rewind to more 70's and 80's influences, aiming to bring a bit more rock back into metal without sacrificing any punch; things like big choruses and hooks as opposed to our previous works' all out intensity and such. We were definitely influenced by concept albums such as Rush's "2112" and Queensryche's "Operation: Mindcrime" (among others) in putting together our story. This album musically is more denim, spikes, spit and vodka than anything we've done.
Conceptually, Silencer takes a look at the U.S-Soviet space race of the 1950s/1960s and asks some "what if" questions. Lyrically, we rewind back to space race era Soviet Russia, and we chose to take a fictional turn towards what would have happened if the Russians chose to one-up the American's moon landing by going somewhere further. We tell the story from the Russian perspective, and try to capture the mentality of a union that could mobilize its entire population to achieve a goal, and also from the perspective of a member of this mission. This sort of story almost wrote itself, and its mood lent us to write some more straightforward yet very heavy tracks. It's definitely more thematic than prior releases, but aims to get to the point and tell a large story fairly efficiently.

Bethlehem has checked in with the following announcement about canceling the band's previously scheduled appearance at the Black Metal is Rising festival due to an injury:
"Unfortunately we have some bad news regarding the appearance of Bethlehem at Black Metal Is Rising 7 at the Glazart in Paris on the 1st of July. Our bass player Bartsch had to undergo some surgery on the 14th June and although he did everything possible to ensure that he would be fit to play, a visit to the doctor today confirmed that he wasn’t completely healed and that were he to play, he would risk opening the wound which would mean an even longer recovery time.
"Apart from which, we would not want to disappoint our fans with a show where he was less than 100% up to his usual standard of playing. Please be assured that he will be fit again very soon and back to being able to play live. We are all very disappointed about not being able to give our French fans a dose of live Darkmetal mayhem, but be assured that we will reschedule the Paris show as soon as possible.
"Thank you all for your understanding."
Polish doom band Satellite Beaver is streaming all four tracks from its recent four-song EP "The Last Bow" over on Bandcamp. The band started out in Warsaw in 2008, releasing its debut "Trip Outside Your Mind" a year later. Satellite Beaver says they search for the thickest guitar strings and biggest crash cymbals ever created, and keep their philosophy simple: tune it lower.
In a statement issued today, Austrian black metallers Hellsaw announced their intention to take an indefinite break from all activities. All scheduled tours and appearances during 2012/13 have been cancelled.
Citing “personal reasons” for the decision frontman and founder Aries had this to say: “We may be back, or we may be back as something entirely different, but whatever happens in the future we would just like to thank all the fans who have shown us such phenomenal support and all the people who have worked with us to make Hellsaw what it is today.:
The following press release was also issued about the band's history:
"Formed in 2002 by Aries, and then-drummer Svart, Hellsaw’s current lineup includes Aries on vocals, Malthus and Isiul on Guitars, Desderoth on Bass and Neuroticon on Drums. With five full-length albums under their belt, Hellsaw are one of the leading Black Metal bands to emerge from Austria in recent years. The band’s use of instantly recognizable melodies which stay firmly in your memory, coupled with a respect and understanding of what it really takes to make a good Black Metal band created a sound that was unmistakably Hellsaw and culminated in the release of their fifth album “Trist” earlier this year on Napalm records. More information about Hellsaw can be found at this location.
