Exhumed frontman Matt Harvey has been added as a special guest lead vocalist to the all-star studded Death To All Tour 2012. Matt Harvey will be joining drummers Gene Hoglan (Individual Thought Patterns/Symbolic) and Sean Reinert (Human), bassists Steve DiGiorgio (Human/Individual Thought Patterns) and Scott Clendenin (The Sound of Perseverance), guitarists Paul Masvidal (Human), Shannon Hamm (The Sound of Perseverance) and Bobby Koelble (Symbolic), and vocalist/label-mate Charles Elliott of Abysmal Dawn/Bereft.
Harvey replaced Obscura vocalist Steffen Kummerer due to visa issues and had only 9 days to learn his entire set. Matt Harvey elaborates on the opportunity: “To say that I’m excited about hitting the stage with such amazing musicians would be a massive understatement. To say that I’m overwhelmed standing in Chuck’s spot singing his songs would be the understatement of the century. Phrases like ‘it’s an honor’ get tossed around pretty casually, but taking part in this unique celebration is truly exhilarating, humbling and magical for me. Even though the name of the band is Death, this event is a celebration of Chuck’s life and the vitality and staying power of his work. To be able to share what Death’s music has meant to me this way is a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity I am incredibly grateful to have.”
Additionally, the concert organizers commented on Matt’s involvement: “The guys in the band, as well as the organizers and crew, want you to know Matt has been killing it! We are all very thankful for his efforts and talent, being able to pull this off on such short notice.”

The big name metal bands may get most of the spotlight, but Metallica and Black Sabbath are just the tip of the heavy iceberg. Every week we search out and share lesser known or unsigned acts that deserve to be heard by a wider audience. For today’s edition of Unearthing the Metal Underground you’ll get a dose of metal that bucks specific trends and expresses a heavy sound in unexpected ways.
For all the focus on rebellion and the disdain for conformity, heavy metal is undeniably a style of music that breaks down into very regimented genres – black metal, thrash, grindcore, etc. There tends to be a rigid confinement that bands are expected stay within when creating music, and stepping outside those boundaries either leads to derision by hordes of anonymous Internet posters, or the formation of yet another sub-genre.
While there’s a whole division of metal devoted to ignoring those boundaries (prog and avant-garde), some bands simply blur the lines between styles naturally and don’t easily fit in one recognizable category. Breaking the strictures set down by the worldwide conclave of elitist metalheads , these three bands start with a standardized form of metal and then head in unexpected directions that set them apart and make them unique.
The solo band from Tim Yatras of Austere and Woods of Desolation, Germ is a project that exudes a pure love of music, no matter where the sonic inspiration originally comes from. Starting out with a highly atmospheric form of black metal using totally indecipherable vocals, the act then blends in shades of rock and other mainstream elements, including the use of clean singing. Going even a step further, the new album “Wish” mixes in trance and electronic elements, at times sounding almost like an ‘80s movie soundtrack. In a nod to the black metal roots, there is a bit of a lo-fi aura filtering everything, and the harsh vocals screech out from the background, just barely breaking out of the surrounding noise.
What’s interesting about Germ is that its particular blend of these styles rarely sounds like anything else out there. The collision of trance and black metal sounds essentially nothing like Nachtmystium’s forays into similar territory, and it also never falls into any resembling the dance metal or dubstep collaborations that have become par for the course lately.
For a condensed look at this intriguing mixup, check out the four minute track “Asteroid of Sorrow” below, or for a longer float down the cosmic highway that is Germ, instead dive headfirst into the 10 minute sublime ride “An Overdose on Cosmic Galaxy.” To check out more from Germ, head over to the band’s Facebook profile.

"Mnemesis," the fifth studio album by Danish modern metallers Mnemic, is now available in North America and guitarist/songwriter Mircea Gabriel Eftemie’s mind is all over the place.
Bored with the standard fare of “track-by-track” commentaries, this crazy Dane decided to have a little fun and headed down to his friend ex-Hatesphere/Raunchy drummer Morten Toft Hansen’s house for some dinner and a game of word association. Eftemie read him the Mnemesis track names, recorded Morten’s responses, and then did a word association on his word association. The results are below.
Track 01, “Transcend”= Meditation = "StegtFlæsk med persille sovs." I have no idea what that’s called in English, but it’s a great Viking dish.
Track 02, “Valves” = Heart Surgery = Keep working out with metal music in your ears and stop eating junk food.
Track 03, “Junkies On The Storm” = Face-Eating Drug Addicts = Never judge.
Track 04, “I’ve Been You” = Peter Frampton’s “I’m In You” (Live) = Great haircut.
Track 05, “Pattern Platform” = The International Space Station = Mass data acquisition.More...

The band's landmark concept album Operation: Mindcrime thrust their unique social consciousness, expertly crafted lyrics and progressive style into the national spotlight in 1988, and was followed by Empire in 1990, the album that delivered the band to arena-headlining status and sold more than three million albums on the back of hit singles 'Silent Lucidity' and 'Jet City Woman.'
"By the time Queensryche released Promised Land in 1994, Tate was universally acknowledged as one of the greatest frontmen in rock and metal, and a driving force behind progressive metal's most innovative force in mainstream music. Queensryche have released 12 studio albums, with one of their most overlooked gems being American Soldier in 2009, Tate's ambitious concept album that explores the consequences of war as told through the voices of veterans." Stratovarius recently announced the recruitment of new drummer Rolf Pilve, who is taking over after the departure of Jörg Michael. The band has now posted a video clip online introducing Rolf, which can be viewed below.
Vocalist Timo Kotipelto commented on the addition of the new drummer: "Although the competition was fierce, Rolf was clearly the best one of the bunch. His precise playing, sureness and right attitude was there right away. He has an astonishing technique and to top that of he has a very musical way of playing, so he can bring something of his own into our old songs as well. Rolf has played a variety of different styles of metal, so fast tempos or more progressive parts will not be a problem. Whatever songs we might compose in the future – I have no doubt that he will be able to play them. He had to be a really good player, but also a nice guy. We were not looking for a Jörg Michael clone."
This is Hell's Rick Jimenez has posted a new road report online through Property of Zack. An excerpt from the band's new tour blog follows:
Well for as good as the last three shows with Unearth were, the first three shows of our summer North American “GREAT AMERCAN THRASH” tour were fucked up. I bet only 1 out of 100 people get where that tour name came from and can appreciate how and why it’s so radical… the others are missing out.
Anyway, first show in northern PA, you know what that means? That’s right, more goddamn traffic. Once we finally arrived at the venue, we met up with Xerxes and bullshitted for a little while like you do with new tourmates, lifted some weights like you do when you’re in This is Hell, and then played the show to a crowd that would have been fine in a small venue but not completely right for the medium/large size one. Those in attendance still had a good time and got down so it was still fun enough. Ever have one of those days where nothing seems comfortable and therefor prohibits you from performing a task properly? That’s how I felt while actually playing. My recently serviced guitar felt fucked, then my strap felt too small, then too big, then the amp sounded weird… whatever. Just a strange feeling. Taking advantage of location, we went to a Wawa and ate away our sorrows before crashing at Scuzz’ parents place in the woods.More...

Guitarist Jeff Loomis will be entering the recording studio this week to record three new songs. According to touring guitarist and vocalist Joe Nurre, “Jeff and I have collaborated musically on 2 of the songs, and I have lyrics and vocals written for the 3rd.”
Touring drummer Anup Sastry will be playing the drums, and producer Aaron Smith will be recording and mixing. Apparently, Loomis will be going back to his roots. The former Nevermore guitarist played in a few death metal bands when he previously resided in Wisconsin as a teenager. “The vocals will be more aggressive and death metal-type.” Nurre explained.
There are plans to release the recordings digitally sometime in July, with samples of songs to be available beforehand.
Nurre added, “We will be playing some of these songs on our upcoming tour with The Contortionist. Jeff starts tracking on Tuesday.”
Details on the upcoming tour dates with The Contortionist, Chimp Spanner, and 7 Horns 7 Eyes can be found at this location.

Amalgama has checked in with the following update about what the band members are currently working on with other projects:
"It's been exactly one year since we took the stage at Valentine's in Albany for our final performance as a band. It was a particularly momentous evening chock-filled with heavy music and good friends. It also coincided with the passage of marriage equality in the state of New York with the bill being signed only a few blocks away in downtown Albany. So the whole evening took on a really special vibe for the many people involved.
"Since then a lot of things have happened with the former members of Amalgama. We're not sure if you have a deep longing to know what the boys are up to these days, but we're going to tell you anyway.
"Johnny is fronting the rock n' roll band Hard Soul after taking some time off to write new music and decompress from 6 years of gigging and playing with Amalgama full-time.
