Norwegian thrashers AURA NOIR will release their long-awaited new album, "Merciless", in late August on Tyrant Syndicate Records. Tyrant Syndicate Records is a new label started by Nocturno Culto of DARKTHRONE, and it is a division of Peaceville/Snapper Records.
The AURA NOIR album will be the first of several albums to be released under the Tyrant Syndicate Records banner, which will also handle all upcoming DARKTHRONE releases. Fenriz of DARKTHRONE and Nattefrost of CARPATHIAN FOREST will reportedly make guest appearances on the CD. Songtitles set to appear on "Merciless" include "Condor", "Hell's Fire" and "Black Metal Jaw".
A number of well-respected Norwegian black metal musicians will gather to perform a selection of classic BATHORY songs during Norway's Hole In The Sky Festival as a tribute to the group's mastermind Thomas "Quorthon" Forsberg, who passed away earlier this month. So far, the following musicians have been confirmed to take part in this special performance (in alphabetical order):
Apollyon (AURA NOIR)
Nocturno Culto (DARKTHRONE)
Samoth (ZYKLON, ex-EMPEROR)
The Hole in the Sky organizers have "the utmost respect for all the musicians lending their valuable time to make this a memorable event in the memory of Quorthon and his work of brilliance," according to an official press release. A portion of the profits from the festival — which is scheduled to be held August 25-28, 2004 at three different venues in Bergen, Norway — will be donated to Black Mark Records, the label owned by Quorthon's father, Börje Forsberg.
Commented Samoth: "Needless to say, Quorthon and his mighty BATHORY had a huge impact on me as a musician and definitely sparked my fascination for black metal in the early days. It was sad to hear of his early death. Quorthon was already a legend for years, and left behind an epic testimony blood, fire and death! May he rule among the gods of Valhalla!"
VH1.com has an article that talks about Slash's missing signature tophat and some more about Velvet Revolver's debut album, Contraband, and frontman Scott Weiland's decision not to talk to the press. Here's a taste:
Like Metallica cutting their hair and Enrique Iglesias removing his mole, Slash losing his signature top hat in the Velvet Revolver publicity shots has hardly gone unnoticed.
The legendary guitarist and his bandmates would like to make it clear, however, that journalists who have noted a total absence are not entirely accurate.
"It makes occasional appearances," drummer Matt Sorum said backstage at the KROQ Weenie Roast.
"Sometimes it's just on the stage in the corner by itself, sometimes it's on me," guitarist Dave Kushner added.
"I just need it," Slash declared with a smile, hiding behind his long locks of hair, which have not changed. "I need it close by for security, in case I get overly shy, so I can pull it over my head."
The hat is traveling with Velvet Revolver on tour, but it's made few appearances, perhaps a sign of how comfortable the guitarist is onstage with his new band. And now that the group's debut album, Contraband, is in stores, Slash only expects to have more fun playing live.

"First of all, we in THE BLACK DAHLIA camp want to apologize for the lack of updates. From now on, the updates will be handled by Dave and myself, so you can expect to finally know what is going on with the band.
The ETID and VITAL REMAINS tours were a complete success. Thanks to everyone who came out to see us, put us up, etc. We greatly appreciate your kindness.
We also played Download Fest in the UK a few weekends ago. Although we played at the same time as MACHINE HEAD AND HATEBREED, the set was a success. We also drank free Aftershock and saw BURST. So fuck you. Props to the guys in Johnny Truant for taking care of us.
The “A Cold-Blooded Epitaph” rerelease is nearing completion, and should be available in the next couple of months. The artwork is again being handled by Black Market Activities own Adam Wentworth.
This brings us up to our most recent BDM news: drummer Cory Grady has been asked to leave the band due to personal and professional conflicts. Cory has been in the band since its inception, and it was not an easy decision on our part. In the good news, we are honored to welcome Zach Gibson to the throne, and can assure you that you will be seeing us on our summer tour with the mighty CANNIBAL CORPSE. We will spend four weeks as direct support for CANNIBAL CORPSE and SEVERED SAVIOR opening; following will be a two week headlining stint with CATTLE DECAPITATION and GOATWHORE
Eat pussy and freak out"
