"Writing you all from Budapest, Hungary after several shows with the 'big four' in Czech Republic and Switzerland. It was absolutely fucking amazing! I was very sick and don't still feel that great, but I am pulling it together for the tour.
"Nothing was going to stop me from kicking ass on this run! We are playing a club show tonight with Megadeth and I am hoping that they will play their entire 'Rust In Peace' album! Anyways, I will keep you updated as the tour goes farther along but so far everything has been great and shows have been awesome. Again, thanks to everyone who voted for me for 'Best Shredder' it was an honor to be nominated and I appreciate all of your support! Take care guys."

Police have stated that Gray apparently had no prescription for either drug, and that an investigation is currently under way to discover how they were in Gray's possession. Gray was survived by his wife, Brenna Gray.
Each week in "Unearthing the Metal Underground," we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. The first time I featured cello and violin metal, I put the genre in context with an introduction about Apocalyptica's influence, and featured three fantastic cello and violin metal bands, Judgement Day, Heavin, and Grayceon. Those bands tend to use both violins and cellos, but today I'm going to focus on some more bands that have followed more closely in Apocalyptica's footsteps and are largely classical cello ensembles who cover or play heavy metal.
Primitivity is a cello and percussion ensemble from the Washington, DC area that blends elements of classical and heavy metal music. Cellist Loren Westbrook-Fritts composes the music and provides the leads, while cellists David Teie of the National Symphony, Kristin Ostling of the Baltimore Symphony, and Mauricio Betanzo of the Maryland Symphony all shred out intense riffs and harmonies. Percussionist Robby Burns from the University of Maryland completes the band with rumbling drum hits. Specializing in the music of Megadeth, Apocalyptica, and Metallica, Primitivity has also written some of their own original compositions. The band released "Plays Megadeth For Cello" earlier this year.
Check out one of the band's original compositions, "Convergence" below.
Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer has developed his new project Sons Of Liberty for the stated purpose of "spreading awareness about the current state of affairs worldwide." A video clip has been posted online of an interview with Schaffer and G. Edward Griffin (author of The Creature From Jekyll Island), which can be viewed below. The band's entire album can also be heard online now at this location.
Joining in on the growing roster of musicians who have commented on the BP oil spill, Otep front woman Otep Shamaya has issued the following statement:
"My friends, I find myself deep in the rolling green of the beautiful Southern territory of flavorful Fayetteville, Arkansas. The hills are rich with a monochrome flora and the arching landscape is crested by a silky blue sky brimming with billowing clouds moving slowly overhead like an enormous ghost armada returning victorious from war. The heat is thick and sweltering. It is a strange and wondrous sensory experience.
"I see all this and am amazed how anyone could live surrounded by such beauty but care so very little about maintaining it. I wonder if future generations will ever believe days like this actually existed or will they assume that these are just the words of a demented mind twisted with fantasy or folklore? Perhaps they will lament on the rugged Eden that their ancestors took for granted and squandered in the heavy stink of apathy and inaction? More...

"We will be heading there in two rounds. First time will be in August, 10-27, recording as much as possible but vocals, and the second round starts off the 6th of September and I will have to the 11th to do all the vocals, which shouldn't be a problem.
"Our material is pretty much completed, there are few things left to deal with so withing a week it will all be done for sure and then we all just have to prepare ourselves individually. By that, I'm now going to listen a little to the preprod. I bid you farewell."

New England’s hardcore/metal band Hell Within has set a July 13th release date for their Thorp Records debut, "God Grant Me Vengeance." The album was recorded at Damage Studios in Massachusetts, with engineer/producer, Pete Rutcho (Bury Your Dead). The new record was produced by Hell Within and Rutcho, and artwork was created by Hell Within's vocalist, J.J. Long.
Guitarist Tony Zimmerman explains, “(God Grant Me Vengeance) is more crushing than the Hammer of Thor. The tour has been great too. It’s nice to be back out seeing people we know, as well as many new ones. We can’t wait for the next one with the album being released. We’re having a blast!”
Metal Mind Productions has issued the following announcement about re-releasing the "Hatred and Disgust" album by Sorrow:
"Metal Mind Productions presents a re-release of the only studio album by the American death/doom metal band Sorrow. Sorrow’s history is a by-the-book example of a band who had genuine talent, but just weren’t lucky enough to survive the avalanche of metal releases in the early 90’s. Today, the group’s debut album 'Hatred and Disgust' (1992), along with the preceding EP 'Forgotten Sunrise' (1991), are considered as true metal classics, hunted by music collectors all around the world. This exclusive double reissue brings back these classics in all of their brutal, devastating glory…
"The group was originally formed in 1988, bearing the name Apparition. Back then, the five-piece (consisting of vocalist Rob Hermandez, bassist Rich Figlia, drummer Mike Hymson and guitarists Andy Marchione and Brett Clarin) played straight-forward thrash metal, much like many other bands on the New York scene. The scene itself was divided between thrash and hardcore fans. Apparition was a quite successful project, recording overall 2 demos and 1 EP – 'Eternally Forgotten/Curse The Sunrise' – released by Relapse Records. They also played numerous shows with other scene bands like Suffocation or Gorguts. The buzz around the group was getting bigger and soon they got their chance to shine. More...
Gothic metal act Pythia has issued the following statement about canceling a previously announced live show:
"The Gathering. It is great with regret that Pythia and The Lorien Trust have to announce that the planned performance by the aforementioned artist is canceled without prejudice. Unfortunately, due to an announcement on the band’s official site with slightly incorrect ticket pricing and ensuing reaction from the player base regarding IC/OOC issues of the performance on the Saturday night, and lack of infrastructure allowing the performance to go ahead on the Thursday as suggested by many, the show will not be going ahead.
"An unexpected backlash from established players has made LT and Pythia re-think the proposed show, as many thought this may interrupt the immersion of the IC aspect of the weekend. Not wanting to offend anyone, as Pythia are also well established participants in the RPG scene, it was thought best that the performance would be better suited to a different type of event, and hope that this is not a reflection upon the artists themselves, but merely the prospect of an electrically ‘live’ performance at The Gathering.
"Unfortunately, many people who were coming to the event to enjoy the LARP experience for the first time through being fans of Pythia who were looking forward to becoming regular members have been left feeling a little amiss. Should these players still attend the event, we suggest that it is best that all existing players extend them the same welcome as any new player should. More...

Raw, no-frills with riffs loyal to the black metal of the 90s with heavy influence from the bands: Krieg, Judas Iscariot, Darkthrone, Uruk-Hai among other bands. Coming soon for Satanhades Prod."

Poland's Dual-Coma has checked in with the following recap of their recent show with Heretique and Masticate:
"Thanks to everyone who attended the Saturday concert for Compressor. We regret only that we had to end the show so quickly because of the sound conditions they were on the scene, and also because of total lack of professionalism of the acoustics. Everything sounded bad, and the scene there was a big screech. After a few minutes could not stand it. We try to always give our all, regardless of whether or not something that we have or not. In vain we tried to contact the owner, who had come along to complete the formalities. Boyz in the bands that played with us had quite a bit to get to the club, and the water did not funnel to Baku.
"Well but what, in conclusion - a big flap! It could be really good, but it turned out how it came out Thanks again to all who attended and who played with us: BASEMENT, HERETIQUE, MASTICATE. The final evaluation for lifetime for the club: 1 / 10. Final evaluation of the bands that played with us: 10.10 (for their professionalism, commitment, and positive attitude in spite of bad aura)."
You can also check out sample Dual-Coma tracks via the band's official MySpace page.
Brazen Bull, who recently announced that Weldon MacDonald of Adratic has joined the band on vocals, has issued a short update from their weekend of pre-production recording. The new songs will be the foundation for the band's next album, entitled "The Traveling Parasite." The band comments:
"With this release comes a new sound, and a new direction. The Traveling Parasite is a mix of technical stop/start fury, all over the shop vocal and guitar noise, beautifully brutal blasting rhythms, and crushing but delicately intricate "anthems". It is nigh on impossible to define the next stage of our development but we will give you updates and previews of our journey as it happens.
"Thanks to all for the continued support and we will hopefully have pre-order information for the upcoming release, as well as new art, merch, and some preview tracks, in the coming weeks/months."
Virginia sludge metal band Lord By Fire has issued the following update:
"We are currently in the process or recording a new batch of songs for a internet release. We may have a sellable copy in the future, but at the moment we are not very much of an active touring band and do not have a label to put it out. If someone and the someone would have to be crazy to just put something out b/c it is really hard for us to tour right now. We just want to get our music out there to the people that want it. So why not make it free. When it's ready for people to hear we will be posting it."
Portugal's Holocausto Canibal has posted a video diary online from the band's performance at the Tattoo Death Fest, which can be viewed below. The band also commented on the footage:

Don't except old-fashioned shredding, we truly found our way within the dark arts, using catchy riffs, melancholic Blues tunes, and urban stories about broken hearts, unpaid bills, lonely nights and warm beer. Stay tuned and await everything!"

Raven Woods bassist Ozam Yildirim comments, "The recording process of our upcoming album is going great. Just wait until you see the unique eastern spirit combined with crushing brutality and catchy riffs. Not for the weak hearts, so to speak. It sounds like a 10 ton hammer and punch in your face from the eastern lands, where all those brutal, dark ethnic melodies actually came out in the first place"

Italian power metal band Elvenking has posted another studio report on their website. Read it below:
"This time my experience in studio was very…ehm…'fast!' I arrived at 3 p.m., after 8 hours driving, had a cup of coffee while meeting Dennis, and at 4 p.m. we layed down the first track! He already setup all the stuff to record the bass and we have just to adjust some pots to get a great sound: this time you can hear a Fender precision A.S. into a Fender supersonic guitar head, plug with a Marshall guitar cabinet. Strange mixture of vintage stuff but we got a big sound! The way Dennis record bass line is different from what I’ve done 'til now, he prefered to listen to the whole line two or three times, then he took the best one and worked on it. Well, after three hours, at 7 p.m. we have done 6 songs. In the night I had gnocchi at the local Italian restaurant and went to bed directly. On Monday we started at 12 and after 3 hours I’ve done my job! Ready to come back home. Bought two boxes of good german beer, filled up at the gas station and after only 40 hours I was back in my bed!"
