We've been talking to bands to get their best pit stories. This installment is from Justin and Angela from Facedown band The Great Commission.
"Rather than go to our prom in high school, Justin and I decided to go to a show instead. Versus the couple hundred dollars we would have wasted, we paid $8 to see Figure Four, Shattered Realm, and Bad Luck 13 at The Showcase Theatre in Corona, CA. It ended up being the craziest show we had ever been to. When BL13 played, they threw weapons into the pit including bats with barbed wire, thumb tacs, fireworks, forks, and random metal objects that were thrown at people. Needless to say it was pretty violent as you could imagine and my shirt caught fire from one of the fire crackers! By far the craziest pit I have ever seen."
Next week hear from Trigger The Bloodshed's Rob Pernell.
Adelaide’s Closed Casket have announced the depature of long time bass player Sam Ahrens due to personal and business reasons within the band. Jack the Giant Killer and ex-In The Burial bass player Jacob Stavropoulos will join the band permanently.
The band commented:
"Unfortunately, we’ve elected to part ways with our long time bassist, Sam Ahrens. Sam has been a principal songwriter and member of Closed Casket since the bands inception, however recent developments have forced us to take a serious look at the dynamic within the band, and for personal and business reasons, we feel that its best that we continue on with a new bassist. We wish Sam no hard feelings whatsoever, and wish him the best with his future musical endeavours.
"We’d also like to take this opportunity to welcome Jacob Stavropoulos (Jack The Giant Killer / ex-In The Burial) to the band as our new permenant bassist. Jacob will be an active member in both performance and songwriting, and we look forward to taking to the stage with him for the first time during our upcoming leg of Queensland shows!"

Taiwan is a country where history and folklore work very much hand in hand, and both of these elements are central to the latest studio album from that country’s premier metal outfit, Chthonic (pronounced "Thonic"). Mirror of Retribution will be released August 10 on Spinefarm Records UK.
Chthonic (a name deriving from a Greek word signifying spirits of the underworld) has delivered an 11-track body of work that touches on both the spirit and mortal worlds, with loss of national identity and the sometimes turbulent history of their homeland recurring themes.
With Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano at the production and mixing helm, "Mirror Of Retribution" sees the award-winning musicians further developing a style that started with the 1999 album "Where The Ancestors' Souls Gathered," blending full-on metal of the darker persuasion with traditional Taiwanese instruments such as two-string violin, the hena.
“The story behind this album combines true historical fact with an ancient myth of hell,” explains bassist and band spokesperson Doris Yeh. “Amongst other things, we make reference to the famous ‘228 Massacre’, which was the biggest ever massacre in Taiwanese history. Tens of thousands of Taiwanese were killed by the Chinese army. The final battle of the event occurred in the middle of Taiwan, where 40 local militia attempted to resist 2,500 soldiers from the Chinese army. In the end, the militia lost their lives near the Sing-Ling Temple.
“Musically, we tried to move the band to a whole new level,” continues Doris. “In the past, we’ve been described in various ways, as ‘symphonic black metal’ or ‘melodic death,’ the word ‘folk’ has also been applied at times, but this was our chance to establish a new place for ourselves in the extreme metal genre…”
Never ones to shy away from a just cause, Chthonic – in particular frontman Freddy Lim – has been consistently active on the political front at home, whilst away from their hometown of Taipei they have appeared at the Wacken Festival in Germany and toured as part of the Ozzfest in the US, the first Asian extreme metal band to make such a mark.

Although the tours in '06 (w/ Megadeth) and '07 (w/ Machine Head) were amazing in many ways, we haven't played a full headline tour in Australia since our first visit back in 2005. Bonded By Blood has issued the following statement about canceling their upcoming European tour dates:
"We are sorry to announce that Bonded by Blood has been forced to cancel the rest of the European Massacre Tour with Fueled by Fire. Though our first part of the tour in the UK with Cauldron started out really good, we had a series of unfortunate events in the rest of Europe with Fueled by Fire and what was supposed to be Suicidal Angels. The tour was looking bad from the beginning due to poor organizing and lack of communication with the booking agency. There was also some close calls with the drivers, who weren't very experienced in long drives or driving outside of their own country.
"As some of you may know, Suicidal Angels dropped early on the tour and we almost called it quits with them. When some of the problems seemed to be resolved, we decided to give it another try and continue on the tour. Neurasthenia, thrash metal from Italy, decided they would come on tour with us last second, and we thank them very much. We finally got into contact with the booking agency and more dates were being confirmed. More importantly, we were going to receive a new driver, so there was hope that we weren't going to die on tour.
"First show in our second attempt to continue this tour was moved 4 hours from where we were told it was supposed to be. We were forced to cancel yet another show(sorry to every one in Czech republic). The last straw came when the new driver messed up the van in the middle of a highway where there was no shoulder lane. Luckily, a random Hungarian dude helped us continue and we didn't have to cancel any Hungary dates. From that moment, we decided this tour was not worth the risk financially, but most importantly we were risking the lives of our band members. More...

French black metallers Glorior Belli, who recently dropped off their planned North American tour with Absu due to passport issues, have issued the following statement about canceling all future live shows:

"It just seems impossible to gather a solid line-up and/or to obtain decent conditions, so fuck off. Until further notice there will be no more gigs on our end."

Metal violin and cello trio Judgement Day's Anton Patzner participated in a collaboration with other musicians, which resulted is a couple of songs being recorded and now released for free download. Here's the background from Judgement Day:
"Recorded in Sacramento in September of 2006, Huge Black Man’s 'Hugh Jackman EP' was in many ways a musical experiment. The rules: 4 musicians from very different bands would meet in a practice space for one day, without any prior rehearsal, and record an entire album.
"Those musicians were:
Anton Patzner of Judgement Day - Violin
Nick Reinhart of Tera Melos – Guitar, Knobs
Sam Phelps of 4 Guys from Reno – Bass
Noah Clark of Brilliant Red Lights – Drums and Producer
"The result is a highly unique blend of musical styles and an intriguing study of spontaneity and creativity under the pressure of time constraint. It’s also pretty fun to listen to."
