Each week in Unearthing the Metal Underground, we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. This week I take on the ever emerging Italian power metal scene.
When one thinks Italian power metal, likely the first band to come to mind is Rhapsody, or as time and subsequent “amicable splits” would have it: Rhapsody of Fire and/or Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody. Italy has been spawning off power metal far back into the 1980’s with bands like Domine, Wotan, Wyvern and White Skull, but few have ever reached such worldwide stardom as Rhapsody/Rhapsody of Fire/LT Rhapsody.
As the 90’s commenced, one of the other well-known pioneering Italian power/progressive exports, Labyrinth, was just starting out under the moniker Visions. It wasn’t until 1994 that the name Labyrinth was born. Within that same year or shortly after, Rhapsody would just start out along with bands like Drakkar, Arthemis, Derdian, Heimdall and Power Symphony. The late ’90’s would see a greater emergence of the scene with another well-known export Elvenking, along with Vision Divine (with Rhapsody vocalist Fabio Lione) Spellblast, The Dogma and Rapid Fire.
By the time the new century started, the Italian scene was bursting with talented power metal acts. Power metal bands seem to pop up on a more frequent basis that new gellato flavors, however, trying to locate the best of the emerging talent isn’t as easy as consulting the Yelp application on your smart phone. To provide some guidance, this week we introduce three of the lessor known Italian power metal bands: From the Depth, Aeternal Seprium and Nightland. More...

Last month in a look at lesser-known side projects from heavy metal musicians we covered Otyg, a folk metal outfit from Vintersorg (Borknagar, Vintersorg) that last released an album at the tail end of the '90s.
During a recent interview we conducted with Vintersorg in regards to his upcoming new album "Orkan," he revealed that Otyg is now finally being resurrected and the band is in the process of recording a third album and follow-up to the 1999 release "Sagovindars Boning." Vintersorg had this to say during the interview:
Yeah, actually we decided to raise that old troll again. It’s been like 12 or 13 years since we put that band to sleep. We always thought the band wouldn’t be vanished from the face of the earth, we always had this kind of open door to it. For the last 10 years I’ve felt like I didn’t have the inspiration to write that kind of music, because I wrote all the music for that band as well. Lately me and Mattias, he’s also in that band, we started to discuss it and he was really keen on doing a third album.
We actually wrote a third album and did some pre-production on it but we never made it anything more than that. So for him he felt it would be nice to complete the saga. We’re actually recording the third album now, and I don’t know if we’ll be doing anymore, but it feels nice to get this one out. It’s a little bit in a new direction, but still very much sounds like Otyg. It’s interesting for us because we haven’t been touching that ground for so many years.
The full interview will be going online tomorrow. Vintersorg's new album "Orkan" is due out on June 29th, 2012 (EU) and July 10th, 2012 (North America) through Napalm Records.

For the first time ever Chuck Schuldiner’s pre-DEATH band MANTAS' recordings have been officially collected into one fully authorized compilation, entitled "Death By Metal." And Metal Underground.com has the exclusive full album stream of the collection (the standard edition). You can hear it in the player below.
"Death By Metal" is the next chapter in Relapse's DEATH reissue campaign, compiling Chuck Schuldiner’s pre-DEATH material from his first band MANTAS into one deluxe collection containing the group’s first two demos and a rehearsal. "Death By Metal" is the brutally raw sound of an entire genre being born out of the basement of Chuck Schuldiner’s Florida home close to three decades ago. These are the earliest recordings of death metal legend, pioneer and groundbreaker Chuck Schuldiner. This is the first time that these recordings have been legitimately available since their original release as the "Death By Metal" demo tape (1984).
Mantas' "Death By Metal" is set for a June 19th North American release date, June 22nd in Benelux / Germany, and June 25th in the UK and rest of Europe. The collection will be released as a CD, Limited Edition Deluxe 2CD, LP, Digital Download and a limited collector's edition containing the Deluxe 2CD, LP on an exclusive color, exclusive Demo cover T-Shirt, and a reproduction of the original Death By Metal demo cassette! Pre-order options, including a new line of exclusive MANTAS and DEATH merch plus additional release information can be found here.
"Death By Metal" follows the recent Relapse Records re-issues of DEATH’s "Vivus!," "Individual Though Patterns," "The Sound of Perseverance" and "Human." Like those reissues, this collection will contain extensive liner notes, this time featuring renowned metal biographer Ian Christe and former MANTAS guitarist Rick Rozz in addition to never-before-seen photos of the band.

"Reign Supreme" features nine tracks and is a "return to roots" with production focused slightly more on slam than in the band's last few works. Thematically, the album is set to be a good old-fashioned piece of social and political commentary in the style of Dying Fetus.
In other news, earlier today Dying Fetus announced the "From Womb to Waste" European tour with Revocation and Job For A Cowboy, and the band also recently released a video clip for "From Womb to Waste." More...

Wolves at the Gate is excited to release a new video for "Dead Man," the first official single from the band's upcoming debut full-length, "Captors" - available in stores and online July 3rd from Solid State Records.
"It was quite difficult for us to come up with a concept and treatment for this video that effectively communicated the lyrical content without literally following every single lyric," says guitarist/vocalist Stephen Cobucci. "But the joint effort from us, [director] Nathan Lundquist and Jon Ringle really brought a beautiful visual depth that we could have never conceived on our own. I am so very pleased with the CGI elements in the video as they are a perfect fit for the concept of the song and video. When Nathan approached me about shooting our performance shots in front of a green screen, I was apprehensive because I didn't want to look like local tv weather men, but he completely helped communicate a beautiful Gospel message though the video."

After previously announcing Sacrifice's Rob Urbinati as a guest vocalist to appear on the new album "Icarus," Dew Scented has now issued the following update about another guest appearance:
"Introducing third of three special guest-musician appearances on 'Icarus!' Dan Swanö (Edge Of Sanity / Bloodbath) – Guest vocals on 'Reawakening.' Dan has been a longterm buddy and true inspiration for Dew-Scented and it’s almost like a closing circle to have him involved with 'Icarus.'
"Dan and Leif first met him on the debut Edge Of Sanity tour with Assorted Heap in 1992 and then Dew-Scented toured with Edge Of Sanity in 1996, where funnily enough Marvin also already appeared as the band’s lead guitarist. Consequently, Dan went on to help Dew-Scented by mixing 1998’s 'Innoscent' album and Leif has ever since always wanted to do vocal or production work with Dan on some level again. Having Dan do his trademark deep grunts as duet vocals with Leif on the song 'Reawakening' is a big honour and personal satisfaction for us."
Dan Swanö comments: "After touring with them, mixing with them, it was about goddamned time that I also sang a nice tune with them. The interplay between mine and Leif’s vocals worked out perfectly. Like a duet between Satan and the Devil ;)" More...

Finland's Memoira, which split with its guitarist back in March, has checked in with the following update about the band's current activity and the progress of working on a new album:
"Hey gang! Had blast at this years On The Rocks festival! Had a great show on the outside stage with amazing crowd! And the afterparty at Baarikaappi with amaizing people was also just plain sweet!
"We'd like to thank all the organizers who made the festival so damn amaizing this year! And a special thank you goes to our own puppie dog Heikki Kaplas behind the knobs! Everyone told us that the sound was great despite we didn't hear a thing cause the stage sound was really terrible.
"Jarkko also had some minor problems with his gear and Timppa manage to loose the china cymbal with stand and all cause it flew off the drum raiser a couple of times and ended up behind the stage....we have already told him to hit the drums a little smoother, but hey what can you do when you are having so much fun!
"About the new album....we are currently working on with the final mix...we still have a couple of more tweaks to do and then it will be ready for mastering...Also we are working on with the album cover and artwork so there is some things to be done!
"About the guitarrist search....We will have some news about that real soon So stay tuned!"

Denmark's Svartsot has issued the following announcement about parting ways with the band's drummer:
"After 3½ brutal years behind the drum kit in Svartsot, Danni Lyse Jelsgaard, known affectionately on these pages as Jeff, has made the decision to go on to despoil pastures new. The decision was made mutually and amicably between Svartsot and Danni following the performance at Copenhell last Thursday.
"We’ve had many memorable experiences with Danni during his time in Svartsot and wish both him and his future projects the best of luck. Danni’s last performance with Svartsot will be at the Boarstream Open Air festival in Germany on July 21st 2012.

The Melbourne 4 piece progressive metal band have been just that since forming in 1992, and have been expanding that awareness ever since. But it would be unfair to simply lump them into the vague progressive metal genre, as they blend all forms of metal alongside rock, jazz, latin and fusion." More...
