We post metal news every day, throughout the day, covering thousands of metal bands including underground and unsigned bands. You are currently browsing the news archive, but you can also find news by band.
42 news articles posted on this day.
Record sales may be dropping and labels may be on the verge of extinction, but the underground metal scene is still a thriving and vibrant place where musical innovation continues to occur. Every Monday we dig deep into the underground to unearth three bands you may not have had the chance to check out yet, but which deserve to be heard.
It’s no secret I dig bands that mix it up and don’t stick to one straight style, having previously unearthed avant-garde bands, a handful of genre flip-floppers, metal outfits that experiment with non-traditional sounds, and those bands that just plain ignore musical trends.
Today you’ll get another dose of heavy music that doesn’t play by the normal genre rules. These three bands may all technically be black metal, but they push that definition to its limits and sometimes even well beyond!
This German act is currently with Code666 records, which is a smaller label in the grand scheme of things, but it still has some very solid underground acts known for combining sub-genres and mixing up their sounds.
Todtgelichter has four full-length releases under its belt, having just dropped new album “Apnoe” this year (reviewed here). “Apnoe” is definitely less raucous and battering than previous releases, occasionally dropping out the black metal altogether, just to bring it back in at unexpected times to barrel over an unsuspecting audience. The harsh vocals are present but take a back seat to clean male and female singing, accompanied by atmospheric and calm parts that give off a modern-era Anathema vibe.
Keep up with the latest on Todtgetlichter at Facebook and be sure to check out a track from the current album and its predecessor “Angst” below.
Swedish act Darkane has unveiled “Mechanically Divine,” a new song from the band's Prosthetic Records debut, “The Sinister Supremacy.” Check it out below.

1. Sounds of Pre-Existence
2. The Sinister Supremacy
3. Mechanically Divine
5. The Decline
6. Insurrection Is Imminent
7. In The Absence Of Pain
8. Humanity Defiled

Following its vinyl/digital release in February, "Known Flood," the debut album from trio Sannhet, is now confirmed for release on CD via Consouling Sounds. The album is available for streaming via noisey.vice.com here or in the player below, and the following press release was also issued:
"With nearly forty-five minutes of electrified post-metal, fueled with domineering riff-building movements and intense percussive hostility, Known Flood unifies Sannhet’s lightly blackened atmospheric style, captured by Colin Marston (Krallice, Behold… The Arctopus, Dysrhythmia) and mastered by Carl Saff. The album and the band’s live performances across the NYC region supporting it have captivated fans and media alike, the band’s unique approach standing out in heavy contrast in an otherwise massively oversaturated genre. Sannhet bends genres effortlessly, and blends it together in a coherent monster of an album. 45 minutes of adventurous aural bliss pass in the blink of an eye.
"Licensed directly from Sacrament Music, the CD version of Known Flood will be made available through Belgium-based Consouling Sounds, the label's aim to put extraordinary music in the post, doom and ambient niche and sub niches into the spotlight. Set for European release on July 8th, and North American release a day later, preorders for the disc are available here."

Society 1 releases a new a video today entitled "Lifeless," directed by vocalist Matt "The Lord" Zane and Noah Raskin.
"Lifeless" is the first complete track made available from the recently recorded EP "Screams Of Sadist" that was produced by Raymond Herrera, with mixing and mastering done by Logan Mader. Society 1 wanted to release the video prior to securing a means of distribution in order to showcase the band's current line up and sound. Zane comments:
"Of course we could just record and release albums on our own, do small tours, basically just make it a DIY situation but after being back in the game for the past year it seems that it would a better decision to try and sign with some type of label that has a few more resources than we do at our immediate disposal. It seems video's are a great way to gain interest these days because it is so easy to reach so many people. I've even know a few new artists acquire deals directly from their Youtube views before even playing a show."
With the band's decision to create and release a video the question came down to which track from the EP should be used to represent where Society 1 stood musically and visually after all these years. More...

Massacre Records has checked in with the following announcement about inking a deal with Thrudvangar:
"We're happy to announce the signing of Germany's death/viking metal quintet Thrudvangar. The band was originally formed as a quartet back in 2001. With the release of a demo in 2003 and the debut album 'Ahnenthron' in 2004, the band gained a lot of fans that are into epic and melodic pagan/viking metal.
"During the recordings of their second album, some major line-up changes took place. With the addition of a second guitarist the band's sound became more aggressive, but still remained melodic. The band signed with Einheit Produktionen and released all of their previous albums, including a re-release of their debut, on the label.
"Thrudvangar played at various festivals, such as the Ragnarök Festival, Wave-Gotik-Treffen or the Pagan Nights Festival and supported bands like Nomans Land and Trollech. More...

Keyboardist Bastien Jacquesson comments, “’Medicine 2.0’ is first time we used the classic verse/ chorus/ verse/ chorus/ bridge/ chorus song structure. The epic chorus keeps it from being simply another deathcore song.”
You can catch As They Burn during a journey across twenty-one cities throughout Europe for a headlining tour beginning September 5th in Pau, France. See a full listing of tour dates below. More...

We know this new beginning of sorts will bring bigger and better things for Unearth and our fans and we couldn't be more excited for the future of all things Unearth. We are currently in the studio recording some of the most aggressive, anthemic and energized metal we have ever written and we look forward to unleashing it to you all when it is finished. Expect to hear more about our new album, release dates and future world wide touring plans later this summer.
"We also want to take this opportunity to thank Metal Blade Records for being our label home for almost a decade. In that time we released four LP's and a double DVD, circled the Globe playing Heavy Metal dozens of times and experienced some of the greatest moments of our collective lives. Metal Blade helped us along the path of our dream and we are eternally grateful. We start new label relationships today, but we will always consider ourselves part of the Metal Blade Records family."

"Lords Of Salem In Total Black Out: This harrowing attraction--based on Zombie’s 2012 The Lords Of Salem independent horror film--is designed to twist the mind. It will accentuate some senses while limiting others. Fear of the dark, claustrophobia, and fear of the unknown will be preyed on as the visitor attempts to traverse this sixty-degree maze.

After releasing debut LP "Manégarmr" through Southern Lord worldwide in April, Belgium’s ominous metal/hardcore unit Hessian has slightly revamped the band’s moniker due to pending legalities. The band is to now be known as Hessian A.D. on American soil moving forward.
Acknowledged the band in a collective statement: "Due to legal reasons, we have been forced to change the band’s name to Hessian A.D. on American territory. This, however, only covers U.S. territory; we will still continue to play under the old Hessian flag in all other parts of the world. Sadly this change is completely beyond our control and it's not very much to our liking. But, rest assured, we will continue to give this band and this music our all. Thank you all for your support."
This inconvenience aside, Hessian A.D. will move forward with their brutal Summer tour actions in continuing support of Manégarmr, with shows booked across the continent through late September and more performances being booked and confirmed all the time. You can stream "Manégarmr" in its entirety via the Bandcamp player below, or catch the band live: More...

Cyclone Empire has checked in with the following announcement about Paganizer canceling all upcoming tour dates:
"Rogga and his Swedish killing machine had to cancel their upcoming summer shows (including Protzen Open Air next weekend), as their second guitarist Andreas left the band... below is a little statement by Rogga himself."
Rogga Johansson comments: "As a few times before in the past 15 and more years, Andreas has decided to leave the rotten ship that is Paganizer. Nothing spectacular about that...the man isn´t hardcore death metal like the rest of us idiots, he often needs a few years breaL to listen to Sophie Zelmani.
"So now Dennis moved over to lead guitar and it'll be killer as he's a better guitar player than me or Andreas (which isn't hard though) And on the bass we have now long time friend Willy Darkness, the man the myth the mystery (to women anyways...). "Our greatest gratitude is addressed to you, people, - to everyone who stays with us, who joins us, who loves our music! We appreciate your support! Enjoy!
"And just think about - a strife with an Echo is endless... The last word will always be pronounced by Him while we are involved. But songs of happiness are often so close that one should just keep ears open, just recognize them in the short moment of silence before the next battle with himself... SHTURM is with you!" More...
