Mastodon Comments On "Jonah Hex" Score

Mastodon has issued the following statement about creating the musical score for the upcoming movie "Jonah Hex:"

"The new movie Jonah Hex starring Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, and Megan Fox features a thunderous score composed by Mastodon and Oscar nominated Marco Beltrami (The Hurt Locker, 3:10 to Yuma). Mastodon were personally asked by the film’s director, Jimmy Hayward to sore the film.

"For their first venture into the realm of film, Mastodon would record the tracks spontaneously while viewing the movie footage, proving to be a daring and daunting way of creating music together over a short period of time. The resulting sessions yielded incredibly exciting results produced in a completely different way than they normally would approach writing and recording for a Mastodon album. The 6-track EP from the original motion picture score for Jonah Hex will be released on June 29th, featuring four new tracks: 'Death March,' 'Clayton Boys,' 'Indian Theme,' and 'Train Assault' with two bonus versions available through iTunes and all other digital outlets."

Porcupine Tree Donating MP3 Proceeds To Charity

Porcupine Tree, who are auctioning off rare items via eBay to help with the medical expenses of musician Mick Karn, has now announced a new 2 hour live performance is being made available as a download only. The band issued the following statement about the proceeds from the MP3 downloads going to help Karn, who was recently diagnosed with cancer:

"'Atlanta,' a complete 2 hour live performance from Porcupine Tree's Fear of a Blank Planet tour, is now available as a download from the PT Store. The show was recorded and mixed to the usual PT standards in order to provide material for a planned live album, but when the decision was taken to film much of the same repertoire in Holland for a major DVD release instead, the Atlanta recording ended up back in the vault.

"Now PT have now decided to make it available in complete form as a download only release to raise funds for Mick Karn's treatment for cancer. Although the repertoire is similar to that on the Anesthetize DVD, the performance has its own atmosphere, and also includes the first ever officially released live recording of 'A Smart Kid.' The mp3s are high quality 320kbps files, and there is a break between tracks 8 and 9 in case you want to burn your own 2 CD set, for which Carl Glover has also provided CD artwork. Please note that profits from the sale of the Atlanta download will go to Mick Karn and his family."

There is no digital post processing, except that the photos were combined and arranged in Final Cut. All effects are 100% manual and hand made. When I was already half way through making the video my computer crashed. Stupid me had no backups so I had to start from scratch. Luckily I still had all the negatives though. Incorporating influences from genres such as doom metal to make their music gloomier and groovier and yet retaining the death metal aesthetic and underground essence, The Dead play in a unique, perverse style of raw and catchy death metal that transcends schools and trends. After releasing their debut full length album through the Australian Obsidian Records, DC Records will be re-releasing their latest full length album ‘Ritual Executions’, which was originally self-released by the band and limited to 100 copies, in much higher quantities. This release will have a modified artwork by Mike Yee and has been mixed and remastered by Aphotic Mote (Portal)."

Diabolical Conquest founder Kunal N. Choksi comments, "I am extremely happy to sign what I feel is one of the best and most original sounding death metal bands today. After promoting The Dead for years, reviewing three of their releases in detail (with the last two finding a place in my best albums of the year lists) and even conducting an interview with them, it was as if I was destined to sign them; no other band seemed worthier. It is an honour to work with a band I have known and admired for so long and I hope to give them the exposure they truly deserve."

The Dead drummer Chris Morse adds, "It is an honour to be entrusted with DC Records’ first release. DC Webzine has always been known for its honest and insightful reviews of underground metal releases and this will no doubt be reflected in the quality of music the label will release. It’s a very exciting time for the band and we cannot express how jubilant we feel at being added to the DC Records roster."

"Ritual Executions" will be released on June 28, 2010. The complete tracklisting is as follows:

1. Burn Your Dead
2. Cannibal Abattoir [mp3]
3. Centurion
4. Born in a Grave
5. Ritual Executions [mp3]
6. Blood Angel
7. Death Metal Suicide
