Unearthing The Metal Underground In Salt Lake City

Each week in Unearthing the Metal Underground, we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. This week I am delving into the ferocious metal offered up to the music gods via the Salt Lake City underground metal scene.

In the past, Utah has been known for many things, such as the majestic Rocky Mountains, the Mormon (LDS) culture (really Utahn’s don’t have horns) and of course… polygamy (which 99% of our population does not practice, even if many them would like to). But unbeknownst to the world, it also contains an amazing array of music. From rock, to alternative, to death metal, local bands are showing the world that Utah/Salt Lake City has far more to offer to the Gods of Metal than terrain, religion or quirky lifestyles.

A Balance of Power

A Balance Of Power is one of the first metal bands I came across upon delving into the local scene. They have a very distinct sound combined of progressive and thrash, whcih culminates into pure metal mayhem. Their sound has take them to great heights in Utah and beyond as well as procuring them the honor of being Utah’s first offical Jagermiester sponsored band. From small intimate stages in clubs to opening Rockstar Mayhem festival in Idaho, A Balance Of Power bring out the metal fans in hordes.

Their music is charged with an intense energy that is catapulted to amazing heights at live shows. They recently released their newest CD in April of 2011, "Pride Preceded the Fall." With fierce vocals, guitar and bass riffs that burn into your soul and powerful drum beats, A Balance Of Power is a band to gratify your metal loving soul. A Balance Of Power is Chuck Stone (vocals), Chris Margetts (guitar), Shane Garner (guitar), Adam Fowler (bass), Marvin Dixon (drums). Check them out at ReverbNation.

Darkest Hour Shoots New Music Video

Darkest Hour has just wrapped up the video shoot for "Love As A Weapon," which is off the band's latest release "The Human Romance." Directed by Scott Hansern, the video takes on a very traditional performance approach to metal videos.

Guitarist Mike Schleibaum comments, "Filming the video with producer Scott Hansen was totally bad ass! Filming on a rooftop above our hometown of Washington, DC, with hail and lightning storms in the distance made for an epic filming experience. The final product will include us performing coupled with time lapsed montages of both majestic and disgusting footage. The contrast of these will surely make for a sick piece of metal videography."

The band has also announced its participation in this year's Summer Slaughter tour. Darkest Hour will be supporting The Black Dahlia Murder and Whitechapel alongside Six Feet Under and Dying Fetus. The dates are as follows: More...

Human To Record New Album

Christchurch, New Zealand metallers Human (who were also highlighted in the New Zealand edition of our Unearthing the Metal Underground column) have completed the tracking of a new set of demo songs for their 4th studio album, which they will begin recording in July of this year.

The band randomly selected 20 of it's Facebook fans to preview and rate the songs. Guitarist / vocalist / founding member Scott Spatcher-Harrison says, "We had a slew of songs to pick from for our next release and decided that this time around we would prefer to see what the metal fans really wanted to hear from us. It's all very well and good for us to go and pick the songs we like for an album, however we're not the ones buying it so we wanted to get a look into what the people want from us instead. And if it ends up being full length or an EP at least we'll know we've got a solid recording anyway. I'm looking forward to seeing what reaction the songs will get."

Songs include: "Dawn of The Braindead," "Death Comes Shuffling," "Teenage Bonesaw Massacre," and "Retardo The Avenger," among others.

The band's forthcoming album will be a follow up to the 2009 release "Cadaver Academy."

Fleshmadesin Streaming New Track

Fleshmadesin has posted a brand new track online, titled "In the Worship of My Death," which is from the band's upcoming album "Delirigion." The track can be heard on the band's official website here. "Delirigion" was recorded and mixed at Aftermath studios by Marco Stubbe, and mastered at Necromorbus Studio (WATAIN, DESTRÖYER666) in Alvik, Sweden.

Frontman Twan van Geel also commented on the album: "'Delirigion' combines the sinners own somewhat unique approach of aggression and groove, which was already noticeable on their forerunners 'Dawn of the Stillborn' 2004 and 'The Aftermath of Amen' 2009, together with the sharpness and anarchistic transcendence of harsh blackened metal. 'Delirigion' is Fleshmadesin's next step on our highway to hell, but we rather see it as the first step into the new flesh.

"This reptile changed skin, so the band's logo made way for a more suiting armor to maintain it's venomous innards on the right place. We are ready to bring back the danger once again and set ablaze the hearts of true metal heads still breathing for that bloody taste of hell's metal! "

An official release date has not yet been announced for the new album "Delirigion."

Battlecross Posts New Album Artwork

Detroit Michigan's Battlecross announced its signing with Metal Blade Records in May. The band has now released the artwork and track listing for the full-length debut "Pursuit of Honor," which can be viewed below. "Pursuit of Honor" is due out on August 2nd in North America.

The band comments on album artwork that was created by Josh Schroeder: "The album artwork for Pursuit of Honor was created by the same mastermind who co-produced, mixed, and mastered this album, Josh Schroeder. He made a few merch designs for us in the past and we knew we wanted him to create the album art as well, first of all to keep everything cohesive and relevant, also because we love his unique style and vision, and lastly because he knows us so well. We feel the artwork depicts a strong sense of power and aggression with a leader among warriors. The Pursuit of Honor refers to the ongoing battle within us and the struggle to overcome, to crush all obstacles, and prevail at all costs."

Also available today is the band's first single Push Pull Destroy. Vocalist Gumby commented on the single: "When I sing this song I think about how hard it was to even get to this point and the hard road still to come. It's about overcoming all and coming out on the other side stronger. Push Pull Destroy is in your face with a blend of intense rage and epic power from the first scream to the ending bass line."

So Hideous, My Love... To Release EP

So Hideous, My Love... will be releasing an EP titled "To Clasp A Fallen Wish With Broken Fingers" through Play the Assassin Records. The band's publicist commented on the EP:

"Lurking beneath the surface of metal underground, NYC’s own So Hideous, My Love... have created a devastating musical hybrid of heart racing proportions. Fusing post rock leanings (Envy, Mono, Godspeed You! Black Emperor) and adventurous black metal (Wolves In The Throne Room, Celeste) with classical beauty (Arvo Part, Beethoven), So Hideous, My Love... lay claim to the appropriately termed buzz moniker 'post-black metal' with their newest offering, To Clasp A Fallen Wish With Broken Fingers.

"Born out of home recordings in the winter of 2008 by composer/guitarists Brandon Cruz and Jack Marshall, So Hideous, My Love... self-released their debut EP, I Balance A Daydream On An Edge Of A Knife, in the Spring of 2010 to an outpouring of love from the heavy music community. To Clasp A Fallen Wish… serves as a companion piece to the band’s first release and showcases a further maturation of engaging daydreams and paralyzing musical nightmares."

Said Cruz of the EP: “The word epic gets thrown around quite a bit online when listeners/press/bloggers/ describe what they hear and for me that’s the greatest compliment. I wrote the songs and the string arrangements to sound urgent, emotive and ‘huge’… a full layered production that was the most destructive and beautiful storm…would’ve used a larger orchestra if possible. For what was trying to be conveyed with the EP, I remember mixing in the studio throughout December and January and watching the trailer for Terrence Malick’s The Tree Of Life on my laptop and thinking, ‘If we could get this record to be the guitar band equivalent of that I could die happy.’”

A limited run (250 copies) of To Clasp A Fallen Wish With Broken Fingers will be available on Snow White or Blood Red 10? vinyl via Play The Assassin Records on June 21st. More...

Iced Earth Announces New Album Title

Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer has issued the following statement revealing the band's upcoming album title:

"Hello gang! Just a quick update for you from the road. We had a great weekend playing at Sweden Rock Friday and the Rock Hard festival in Germany on Saturday. The band’s having a lot of fun, and today we begin rehearsing the new songs for the forthcoming CD, titled 'Dystopia.' We begin master tracking in Florida in 2 weeks and will be traveling between Europe and the US this summer to play festivals and finish the new album. I can honestly say that I haven’t had this many songs give me goose bumps since we recorded Something Wicked This Way Comes, way back in 1998, so this is also very exciting.

"As you can imagine, it’s a very busy time for us. I think we’re all having emotional ups and downs as we’re coming to the end of an era with Matt’s retirement, and we’re also very excited about the future with Stu coming onboard, so it’s a little bit of a roller coaster ride for us. However, we are having a killer time, and Matt is performing at his absolute best and going out with pure class and style, which is always the way he rolls.

"We also had a great time hanging out with the guys in Down last night at the Rock Hard festival. Freddie and my manager joined them onstage for a nice jam at the end of the show. It was brilliant and a lot of fun.

"We’ll be keeping you posted on updates as things move along through the summer. Best to you all!!"

Vader Announces Show In Israel

Polish death metal act Vader will play a show in Tel Aviv this coming August 26th, 2011 at the Sublime Club. Vader will be supported by local death metal band Eternal Gray, (who's new album is coming in October through Season Of Mist), Spawn Of Evil, and Phantom Pain.

The event, titled the "Summer of Death in Israel," is Vader's second coming to the holy land after a successful show in 2002. Vader will play tunes from all the band's albums and will of course headline the night.

Promoter Yishai Swearts of Raven Music commented on the show: "When I first heard Vader's demo tape, many many years ago, I knew that the band will grow to be one the main forces in extreme metal, I follow the band since the beginning and with fantastic albums as 'Litany,' 'Black To The Blind,' 'De Profundis,' etc. they became what I knew they will - A top death metal act, without betraying the style, without lose faith, always stick to their guns. It was Vader's latest album 'Necropolis' that finally moved me to invite the band again to Israel, to play for the many extreme metal fans who are looking forward to bang heads to the massive Vader artillery. I am proud to invite and promote a band with agenda, with an honest belief, and well respected roots, I am sure both the Israeli fans, and VADER will have a night to remember!"

Ticket sales start are available through this location. You can also check out studio footage of Vader recording the band's new album "Welcome to the Morbid Reich" by heading over here.

Zemial Reveals "Dusk" Details

Zemial front man Vorskaath has issued the following update about the band's new single "Dusk:"

"Lyrical themes continue to lead the listener along the vastness of Sumerian cosmogony and existentialism and the symbolism of the Cthulhu Mythos. Mixing analogue synthesizer soundscapes with dreamy guitar melodies and harmonies this EP signifies Zemial's music direction toward the mysteries of space and is the direct precursor to the vastness of NYKTA.

"Both Dusk and Nykta will be presented live in their entirety to Greek audiences in September 2011. More details to come.

Biomortal Covers "Take My Breath Away"

U.K. progressive/industrial metal act Biomortal has posted a new video, which heavily features cats, for the band's cover version of Berlin's classic "Take My Breath Away."

This also coincides with the release of the five track "Breathe EP," which can be downloaded for free from the band's site. It features the song "Take My Breath Away," as well as four other songs.

"Take My Breath Away isn't on Genesynthesis (forthcoming Biomortal album) so we thought we'd give it away for free with some new versions of old songs in better quality for you to listen to and enjoy (or be violently sick)," commented Paul, the guitarist, synth player and backing vocalist. "This is not meant to be a major release from us, merely some stuff we thought the fans might like to hear," he continues.

"We're very nearly finished our new album, Genesynthesis, we just have to record one more song, which will be the last song on the album." states Robert the main vocalist. "The album will be over an hour long and we're hoping it weighs in at around an hour and a half but it depends on this last song which is going to be pretty epic."

You can also check out the band's previous music video for the song "Letter" off of the forthcoming album "Genesynthesis," directed by Daniel Brand of Neskin Industries.
