The Absence Drummer Explains Being "Coffinized"

Ask anyone where the home of American death metal is and everyone except people from New York will say, Florida. The state has a long history with the extreme music, birthing such bands as Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel and Deicide as well as housing the legendary Morrisound Studios, where death metal bands from the world over flocked to to record their albums. As time has gone on, Florida still produces some of the best bands in the field, one of which emerged in 2002, under the name of The Absence.

Since their inception, the band has released four albums, which have become known among metal fans for blending melodic death metal with thrash influences and now, on their fifth full length, "Coffinized," (to be released on June 25th,) the quintet even bring in some black metal sounds. To find out about this beast of an album, I caught up with drummer Jeramie Kling, who discussed the meaning behind the title, the artwork, why the police were called when filming the music video for the title track and much more! You can check it out below. More...

Deformatory Announces Third Album

Deformatory has been a maelstrom of devastation since 2010, assaulting all in their wake with relentless sonic brutality. This year they are adding to their punishing catalogue with their third album "Inversion of the Unseen Horizon," which was mixed and mastered by Topon Das (Fuck the Facts) from Apartment 2 Recording along with the artwork done by Paul Gerrard, who is a movie concept designer known for his imagery on Wrath of the Titans, Hellraiser: Origins and Hellboy.

In anticipation of what is sure to be one of the heaviest tech death albums of the year, Deformatory are luring listeners in with the first single "In The Embervoid Where Dead Stars Reign," which can be heard via its premiere on Bravewords or below.

This is the third full-length album for Deformatory, following the 2011 EP "A Prelude Of…"; the 2013 full-length "In The Wake of Pestilence'' and the 2016 full-length "Malediction." The nine-track album is divided into three chapters, of which “In The Embervoid Where Dead Stars Reign” is the third song in the second chapter.

Deformatory explains the album’s concept and how the single fits in:

"In our previous album 'Malediction,' we explored the truth about Lucifer, who was an angel possessed by a far greater evil entity named Savael. We dove into his awakening and consequences for mankind. Our newest album reveals that Savael was but a mere droid in a complex hierarchy of vile entities, known as The Ce’naxors from a planet called Cyru’xil, whose Grand Arkitekt has an insatiable thirst for destroying life stars.

"The single is about the aftermath of planetary consumption and its effect on the multiverse. How death and destruction breed new forms of life, including some unintended consequences for Cyru’xil."

The album "Inversion Of The Unseen Horizon" will be released on September 3, 2021. More...

Mordred Uploads New Music Video

The influential San Francisco crossover thrash metal act Mordred have unleashed the music video for their new song “Malignancy.” The clip, which features appearances from fellow Bay Area metalheads Chuck Billy (Testament), Will Carroll (Death Angel) and Matt Camacho (Forbidden), was written and directed by Mordred guitarist Danny White and Christian Powell of Wintermusik Productions and can be viewed below.

"'Malignancy' was truly a band effort," says White. "We all had a hand in the writing. The music was done and there were some attempts at lyrics, but the subject was just too close to heart to write about. I was relating it to (vocalist) Scott Holderby one night over drinks, and I said that it doesn’t matter who you are or what you do for a living – cancer doesn’t give a shit. He said I should just write that. The lyrics were written 20 minutes later. This is dedicated to everyone who’s lost someone to this wretched disease. Fuck cancer."

"Malignancy" is the second advance taste of "The Dark Parade," Mordred's first full-length album in over 25 years. Set to be released by M-Theory Audio on July 23, the record – which will be offered on CD, digital, blue vinyl with orange splatter and a limited-edition, mail-order exclusive white vinyl variant with a Mordred turntable slipmat and autographed photo card – can be pre-ordered here. Gus G Shares "Fierce" Music Video

Guitar shredder and string virtuoso Gus G releases his exceptional new single 'Fierce' today. To round things up, Gus teamed up with filmaker Panagiotis Kountouras to produce a videoclip that offers unequalled opportunities - a very special love story with corpsepaint included. Are you ready?

Gus states on this video: "I came up with the concept of a lonely Rock star who eventually finds true love in the eyes of “Necromantissa” - a girl he previously kept hostage in his dungeon. Music finally unites them and they live happily ever after and even form a Metal band. Nightmare or reality? […] We had tons of fun shooting this, getting in full makeup. I love certain black metal & shock rock aesthetics & wanted to try something different, instead of doing yet another performance video. And I also wanted to make a video with my cats too." More...

Mastiff To Release New Album In September

UK five-piece and recent Entertainment One (eOne) signees Mastiff will release their ferocious new album "Leave Me The Ashes Of The Earth" on 10th September.

Forged in 2014, Mastiff's unique combination of blackened sludge, grindcore, and powerviolence creates a bleak and chaotic atmosphere, sounding as if the spawn of Crowbar, This Is Hell, and Napalm Death composed an album inside the Lake Of Fire. The unrelenting, brutish curmudgeon aura of Mastiff can be deceptive however, as bright sparks of nuance and jarring adventurousness lurk behind every riff, rumble, and anguished, painstaking bellow stitching together a soundtrack suitable for betrayal, depression, self-loathing, and total despair, with winking, devilish glee. The bulldozing din of Mastiff is akin to the catharsis in setting something aflame just to watch it burn.

Crafted in just five days at No Studio with producer Joe Clayton (Pijn, Wren, Leeched), the band’s third full-length, "Leave Me The Ashes Of The Earth," is a misanthropic masterpiece. The sorrow-filled souls of every miserable cretin it reaches will stir in basements, hovels, pubs, and darkened alleyways. Conceived during a pandemic-enforced longest stretch between Mastiff records, the record paints on the band’s familiar canvas, but with a far larger palette than ever before.

In advance of the record’s release, Mastiff offers up the record’s savage first single and video, "Endless," now playing at Decibel Magazine, you can also watch the new video below. More...

Distant Shares "Aeons Of Oblivion" Music Video

Distant have released an optic massacre of a video for the title track to their new album "Aeons Of Oblivion," which is scheduled for release via Unique Leader Records on 11th June. The track also features the vocal savagery of Adam Warren from Oceano. You can check out the video below.

The Dutch slam-hybrid deathcore six-piece comment: "'Aeons Of Oblivion', the title track to the album, is an important track for us. Bringing a beast out from hiding and into the light, we hold this track very close with Adam Warren on board. This song, 'Aeons Of Oblivion', captures the final conquest of Tyrannt Taglaroth, as written in our book The Rise Of Tyrannotophia. With the relentless assault of Adam's vocal feature and the punishing music to match - 'Aeons Of Oblivion' is sure to make your ear drums scream for help, help that will only come once you finish the album."
