Yakuza is entering the studio once again to craft a brand new release that will be unveiled later this year. The band has headed to Engine Studios in Chicago to create a 6th studio effort. Sanford Parker (Nachtmystium, Yob, Rwake) will once again bet at the helm, as he has been for the last few Yakuza releases.
Main man Bruce Lamont comments, "There is one common thread in Yakuza records - we thrive on VARIETY. We try to go to places we've never gone before and create open space - being experimental so to speak, but we still have a love for a good melody. Sanford is a big help bringing the sounds together. Lyrical themes focus on life and death, the light and the dark. Our last record was a reaction, somewhat of a warning call for what has been happening globally and spiritually but not in a religious sense. This album is the aftermath, the balance between the light and the dark. And as dark as it gets, there is always light at the end of the tunnel." More...
Doom metal harbingers Samothrace this week proudly announce the completion of their second LP. The new hymns were constructed at Soundhouse Studios in Samothrace's hometown of Seattle with producer Brandon Fitzsimmons (ex-Wormwood) at the turn of the year, then mastered at Earhammer by Greg Wilkinson (Brainoil, Graves At Sea).
Bearing the title "Reverence To Stone," the LP's two extensive tracks -- "When We Emerged" and "A Horse Of Our Own" -- engulf nearly thirty-five minutes, presenting the unit's revered, multi-faceted doom at its most expansive to date.
Stated founding guitarist/vocalist Brian Spinks on the forthcoming album: "Man, it’s been almost four years since our debut release Life’s Trade, but we are still alive and kicking. We’ve endured some member changes and some definite peaks and valleys in our personal lives, but we are truly stoked to be releasing our second album, Reverence to Stone working again with 20 Buck Spin. We have certainly matured in our playing and writing, but we still worship tone and the heavy. Always have and always will… We thank everyone who has hung in there waiting for something new from us. We've done our best not to disappoint." More...

No official press release has yet been issued as to whether the band is working on new material or whether the self-titled debut will receive a re-issue.

“Heritage” is the slowest album in Opeth’s discography, but that doesn’t make it a bad album. Opeth has never made a bad album, and every Opeth album contains slow parts. This time the group just decided to make that the focus of the recording. I’m not turned off by a band playing slowly. In fact, some of my favorite artists are known for playing slowly. These bands carry the “doom metal” modifier. While nobody with the knowledge of descriptive metal tags would categorize Opeth as a doom artist, they take a similar approach, especially mood-wise, to their music. More...
U.K. act Architects posted a new music video for the song "Alpha Omega." The song will be featured on the band's new album "Daybreaker" which is scheduled for release on May 28, 2012 (EU) and June 5, 2012 (North America).

Finnish traditional folk metal pioneers Korpiklaani have revealed the first details on their upcoming 8th studio record and 4th release via Nuclear Blast Records. The record will be entitled “Manala” and is scheduled for a release on the 3rd of August 2012. Main man Jonne Järvelä explains the album title:
“Manala is the realm of the dead - the underworld in Finnish mythology. Tuonela, Tuoni, Manala and Mana are used synonymously. This place is best known for its appearance in the Finnish national epic Kalevala, on which many of our new songs are based. In the 16th poem of Kalevala, Väinämöinen, a shamanistic hero travels to Manala to seek for knowledge about the dead. On the journey he meets the ferrywoman (similar to Charon), a girl, Tuonen tytti, or Tuonen piika (Death's maid), who takes him across the river of Tuoni. However, on the isle of Tuoni he is not given the spells he was originally looking for and he barely manages to escape the place. After his return he curses anyone trying to enter the place alive.”
For those of you who are now afraid of not being able to understand the mystical Finnish lyrics on the album – don’t worry: “Manala” will come to you with a bonus CD, including the whole album with English lyrics.
Stay tuned for further information on the album. In the meantime, check out the song “Metsälle” that offers you a foretaste of the new compositions at this location.

The theme of the third album of these Scandinavians can be described as sum of the major tragedies of mankind’s history. Lyrics for “Tragedy Has Spoken” were written by Pär Johansson (Satariel, Torchbearer, The Few Against Many) and the band’s lead singer Christian Älvestam (also in Solution .45, Torchbearer, ex-Scar Symmetry), and address the diversity of tragedies, some of which have taken the guise of accidents or natural disasters, while others were carried out with human hands and intent.
"Tragedy Has Spoken" is set for release on July 2nd in Europe and July 3rd in North America through Lifeforce Records. More...

Our “Sunday Old School” column covering the legendary Swedish progressive death metal act Opeth is just on the horizon, and we’ve decided to take this opportunity to look more in-depth at the band’s latest album “Heritage,” which has divided the fanbase. While I personally find the album disappointing, other members of the MetalUnderground.com staff hold differing opinions. If you don’t fancy my take on the album, Rex_84’s opposing look at “Heritage” may be more to your tastes.
Before the album was released I made of point to avoid listening to any advance tracks, wanting to hear the upcoming masterpiece in its entirety with no preconceived notions of what I was going to be experiencing. Although I gave it a 3.5 out of 5 in the final review, I have to confess my opinion of the album lessens every time I listen to it. With the exception of “The Devil’s Orchard,” I’m at a point where I almost hate this album.
I should reveal up front that I’m one of those people that would easily get labeled an Opeth fanboy on any given Internet discussion. If you’ve ever complained about how fans of the Swedish outfit are “pretentious” or “snobby,” you were probably talking about me. My CD case isn’t arranged alphabetically or even by genre – it’s arranged in order of bands I listen to most frequently to bands I listen to least often. “Orchid” through “Watershed” occupy the first nine spots in that case.
The first time I ever heard Opeth was on my 14th birthday, and it’s a tale I enjoy sharing whenever metal stories come up in conversation. Being raised in a very Christian home, under no circumstances was I ever to be listening to something with loud guitars and indiscernible vocals. Jars of Clay and Rebecca St. James were the order of the day, and Audio Adrenaline was the heaviest thing going on. With my family gathered around for the birthday bash, my older brother passed me a computer game as a gift, and this was back when PC software came in those ridiculously oversized boxes. Peaking inside the box, I see a copy of “My Arms, Your Hearse” had been covertly placed underneath the game manual, safely out of parental view.
My exposure to so-called “real” metal was actually fairly limited at that point. Sure, I’d heard Metallica and whatnot on MTV, but as far as actual honest-to-Lucifer extreme metal, my experiences were essentially limited to a Destiny’s End album and one Samael EP, so I had no idea what to expect when popping that CD into the player. I certainly didn’t think the album would be starting with the sounds of rain and piano notes before the metal hit, and then suddenly my world exploded. That shit on the radio everyone was listening to? That wasn’t music anymore. THIS was music.
