Northern Kings, Finland’s premier symphonic power metal supergroup, are not your average covers band, featuring four operatic male vocalists performing classic tracks in their own unique symphonic rock style that really must be heard to be believed. I was happy to hear just a week before this show that Shadows Fall's tour was hitting Jaxx in Springfield, Virginia on April 13, 2008. I had already resigned to missing the tour, which featured a great lineup with Droid, Arsis, The Showdown, and Kataklysm as support, because the Baltimore date was the day before Ministry's final stop in my area, and I'm just too old for back-to-back shows! The April 13 show worked out perfectly, as I really wanted to catch this tour. The show was also on a weekend and I had not been to Jaxx in quite a while, not that I needed so many reasons to go to this show. More...
OPIATE FOR THE MASSES have posted the new track “21st Century Time Bomb” on their MySpace page. This track is off the group’s new album, “Manifesto,” which is scheduled for a July 8th release.
Upon speaking about the song’s origin, vocalist, Ron Underwood states “The track ‘21st Century Time Bomb’ was one of the first songs that Jim (guitars) and I worked on for Manifesto. The title is actually a direct quote from a Metal Edge article- [they called Opiate ‘A 21st Century Time Bomb’ in a review]. So we took that and ran with it; used it as a template for the song itself. The music had to be mechanical and militant, but brash like a guillotine; the soundtrack of a revolutionary uprising. The lyrics had to be the voice of the underdog lit to pop in the face of oppression. Who can't relate to that? Also, to stay on course with the theme, we recorded the song at 120 beats per minute so that the back beat synchronizes with the second hand of a clock (for the time bomb effect) and it happens to be a good, fast-marching tempo. I think it's the perfect opener for our new album.” More...
Veteran Dutch thrashers DEAD HEAD are ready to enter the studio to record their follow-up to 2005's Haatland. Returning to a more vicious rabid thrash approach, the new album "Depression Tank" (working title) is expected to be released in the fall via Displeased Records.
In other news, the band's 1999 thrash classic Kill Division will be reissued by Displeased Records around the same time, with bonus live material.

The Greek metal phenomenon Firewind, makes their much anticipated return to North America this week as part of the “Tyranny and Bloodshred Tour,” which could be hailed as one of the best guitar-shredder packages of the year. This crushing, headlining trek kicks off on May 9th and also features labelmates Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity and Divine Heresy.
Gus G. comments on Firewind’s return: “So the time is finally here! We are just about to fly over to North America for the ‘Tyranny and Bloodshred’ tour and we're really excited. We're grateful to return to U.S. soil only a few months after our maiden tour, and this time Apollo (vocals) is on board with us. Since we're the first band on the bill, we're hoping that all of you will come down early enough to witness how the Greeks do it. We look forward to meeting you all soon.” More...
Heralded Indianapolis, IN doom metal masters The Gates Of Slumber have posted another new song online from their forthcoming new album, Conqueror. The brand new TGoS track “Ice Worm” can be previewed now at their MySpace page. Conqueror will see a May 27, 2008 North American release date via Profound Lore Records.
The Gates Of Slumber’s Conqueror is a doomy, epic metal pillage. Produced and recorded in full analog at Chicago’s Volume Studios and produced by Sanford Parker (Nachtmystium, Lair of the Minotaur, Pelican), Conqueror is a mighty plunge that proves true heavy metal doubles as a powerful art form. Crushing riffs brim with melody and solos “wail” as the strong vocals of front man Karl Simon and a storming rhythm section hammer home songs such as “Trapped in the Web”, “Eyes of the Liar”, “The Machine” and the ominous, 4-part heavy metal odyssey, “Dark Valley Suite (i. Black River I, ii. Lines Written with the Knowledge I Must Die, iii. Call of the Black Gods, iv. Black River II). More...

"We just finished our last show w/ Symphony X and Epica and all we can say is that the tour was killer! Everyone from the bands to the crew were super cool. It truly was one of our best touring experiences we've had. We can't express enough gratitude to the Symphony X guys for taking us out and allowing us to play to such a diverse and progressive crowd. We also were amazed to the extent of fans that came out as a result of our exposure with last years Gigantour and the amazing tour we had with Dream Theater." More...

UK-based black metallers AKERCOCKE have issued the following update:
"Akercocke team up with legendary British thrash metal icons SABBAT, supporting them at a show at London's Scala on Sunday, June 8th.

You can also catch Akercocke earlier that week in Birmingham, see the Live section for further details."
Blabbermouth.net reports via The Pulse of Radio: If you're one of the tens of millions of people who saw "Iron Man" this past weekend, you might have noticed that a guard in the terrorist camp where the early part of the film takes place looked a lot like RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE guitarist Tom Morello. A glance at the cast list during the closing credits confirmed that Morello does indeed make a cameo appearance in the film, although he has no dialogue and gets creamed by the first incarnation of "Iron Man" pretty quickly. Morello also played guitar on part of the film's score, which was composed by Hans Zimmer.
Morello's previous acting credits include "Star Trek: Insurrection" and "Made". The latter was directed by Jon Favreau, who also directed "Iron Man".
The guitarist has also contributed to the scores of "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and "Dodgeball".
Morello just completed a stint as THE NIGHTWATCHMAN on the Justice Tour '08 and will hit Europe with RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE later this month to begin a series of summer festival shows.
"Iron Man", which stars Robert Downey Jr. as the Marvel Comics super hero, earned more than $100 million at the box office since opening on Friday (May 2), with a sequel already announced for spring of 2010.
British power metallers DRAGONFORCE's webmaster has issued the following update:
"The mighty DragonForce are set for a UK and Ireland tour this September. The tour will follow the release of their as-yet-untitled new album, which is pencilled to hit stores on August 25th.
The band are currently hard at work completing the new album, before heading Stateside in early July for the start of the inaugural Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival tour. The package kicks off in early July and is headlined by SLIPKNOT and DISTURBED, with DragonForce bagging a main stage slot right before them.
Meanwhile, DragonForce’s last album Inhuman Rampage, is still romping out of stores on both sides of the pond, thanks in part to the inclusion of lead track, ‘Through The Fire And Flames’ as the ‘most difficult' on the top-selling Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock video game.
Elsewhere in DragonForce news, guitarists Herman Li and Sam Totman recently launched their new signature guitars at the NAMM show in Los Angeles. You can check out the details over at www.ibanez.com. Also look out for an exclusive interview with Sam real soon.
Tickets for the tour go on sale this Friday, April 18th and can be pre-ordered from Wednesday morning (16th) at www.livenation.co.uk." More...
The Bell Center is a pretty good venue in terms of size and sound quality, but for those of us who weren’t able to buy ground tickets before they sold out, the seats were a bit lame. I don’t want to complain, but the bands were really far away – you try headbanging from the stands with five inches of standing room without bashing into the people standing nearly on top of you.
On the other hand, the people-watching in the large arena was excellent, particularly because Megadeth tends to draw metal fans as well as metalheads. By this, I refer to the hordes of young teenage boys flocking to the over-priced merchandise stands to don $40 Megadeth tees as their girlfriends went about in whatever Hot Topic is peddling to the angsty-girl demographic these days. On the opposite end of the spectrum, overweight middle-aged men guzzled down expensive beer and sat in their seats looking bewildered until Megadeth came on. Before I become too disparaging of the crowd, however, I am compelled to note that the enormous pit where people are typically embroiled in hockey battling looked like a great deal of fun from where I was sitting. Legendary death metal band Cannibal Corpse has been busy working on the follow-up to 2006's victorious release Kill, which saw the band hit the Billboard Top 200 chart at #170 with 6,049 units scanned, #6 on Billboard's Heatseaker chart, #16 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart, #21 on Billboard's Top Hard Rock Albums chart, a coveted spot touring on 2006's Sounds of the Underground, headlining the extremely successful Metal Blade Records 25th Anniversary Tour, and multiple tours overseas and dates in Canada and South America.
