Iced Earth announced that drummer Brent Smedley has split with the band due to personal family reasons. His replacement will be Raphael Saini (Chaoswave/Ex-Emergency Gate), who will start with the band on its tour dates this summer.
Smedley explained: "I have family members that are elderly and frail and need my help here in Jacksonville. It’s been one of the hardest decisions of my life but I simply cannot commit to the kind of schedule the band deserves and requires so I decided to ask permission to step down from my post."
The band commented: "Brent has been a valued member of the group for a long time. We thank him for his contributions, friendship and energy and wish him all the best for the future. We want to welcome Raphael with open arms and are expecting for our fans to give him the welcome he deserves."
In addition to live dates, the band's summer will also be spent recording and mixing the new studio album entitled “Plagues of Babylon." A headline tour for the new album will kick off in January 2014.

"We've traveled across the entire USA and Canada, released three albums, and loved every second about being on the road. We want to keep this message short, and just want all of you to know it's been a pleasure, and one hell of a ride.
"Thank you for all of the memories that will last a lifetime. 'Find love in your sky, Find peace, Realize, Only you can find the colors that differ you from any other.' - IA62" More...

The night ended up being one of those really unexpected good times. I started in a mellow mood, listening to piano albums by Medeski and Mingus all day. The weather was unseasonably warm for a mid-April evening which made me want to be outside, not stuck in bar listening to four heavy metal bands I had never heard of until 1:00 in the morning.
I headed over to the V Club to check at 9pm. To my surprise, All Hail the Yeti, had dropped off the roster which pushed the start time back an hour, which gave me an hour to kill. I passed the time nursing a Corona and chatting up Mr. Duncan, the door man, about the show posters they had on the wall. Jimbo Valentine of Amalgam Unlimited had created a badass poster for the show that night. In retrospect I should have asked for a copy.
Among the Dead was the first band on stage. Among the Dead is a local band from Huntington, a 3-piece plus singer, in their early 20s maybe. The singer had a stubbled head, a beer belly, was wearing camo shorts and nerd glasses. The other three members looked like versions of a skinny jeans advert, all lanky and cropped hair. Their sound was heavy, death metal, with a loose playing style, though the songs stayed together well. The singer alternated belting out deep guttural bellows and sick screeches. The guitar player had some brief sweet spot solos, while the bassist bruised his instrument with interludes on a song or two. The drummer had serious technique with the double bass. The crowd liked these guys. They clapped and whistled and cheered. After their second song someone in the audience yelled, “Can we get more please?” Among the Dead delivered the request and much more. More...

In a recent interview with Kleanthis Papagiannopoulos of Rock Overdose, Sepultura frontman Derrick Green shed some light on the band's forthcoming, as-yet untitled new studio album, which will be the first with drummer Eloy Casagrande. An excerpt from the interview reads as follows:
Green: "We have written most of the music already and now we are working on lyrics for the album. We should have everything ready before we hit the studio June 1st. The album is sounding really sinister, dark, and metal as hell! It's been great working with (drummer) Eloy (Casagrande) in the writing process because it brings a whole different energy to the music. The many changes that have been going on in our lives and in the world also add to the making of the new album. We hope to have it released around the end of October/November on Nuclear Blast."

Wyoming powerviolence-seared hardcore audio terrorists Reproacher recently dropped their latest self-released full-length "Nothing To Save." Check out the track "Casemate" in the player below. The following press release was also issued about the album:
"The band’s misanthropic sophomore release delivers 11 merciless tracks of metallic hardcore mixed with rumbling blasts of low-end vocal snarls. Nothing to Save was recorded in 4 days in January 2013 in Salt Lake City by Andy Patterson (Gaza, Call of the Void), at the Boar’s Nest. Mastering was done by Jack Control at Enormous Door. Featuring a current member of Denver doom deviants Primitive Man, Reproacher breed hate and disease through sonic decimation."
Elaborates vocalist Joel of the track: “I was listening to an episode of Radio Lab where the topic was theories of consciousness after death, which I think is bullshit, and this guy, David Eagleman, described it as a place where ‘moments do not endure.’ In life, moments do endure. Things that happened in an instant years and miles away stretch out and follow me around wherever I go. A ‘casemate’ is a small space in something like the wall of an ancient city or a fortress which functions as an armored enclosure during battle or for storage. As I come to terms with my past failures and losses, I am increasingly skeptical and pessimistic and I think I just don’t try to connect with people anymore. It turns to shit every time and I don’t have anyone to blame but myself. I put up barriers to vulnerability and I thought a ‘casemate’ was a decent metaphor. It sucks during the times I’m lonely, but I just endure my days and carry on.” More...

"As a result, I have also just completed all of the guitar recordings; what remains left to do is one more drum track (for a new song composed after the initial drum recordings) and vocals.
"Many more updates to come / ideas in the mix. Thanks to everyone that has supported the demo over the years (and those who have since forgotten about it), I hope that this EP can revitalize the interest of the latter!" More...

Every week we take a look at 3 unsigned bands that stand out from the crowd in our Unearthing the Metal Underground column. This week we take a look at the Los Angeles, California death metal scene.
Having recently moved to Los Angeles from New York, I was very impressed with the scene here. Promoters treating bands with respect and aggressively promoting their shows, grass roots marketing, bands helping each other out, everyone staying to hear every band at every show, and of course tons of talent. Of all the shocks I saw, it was the blending of scenes. There are shows with all genres of metal from brutal death, metalcore, thrash, traditional, and even some hard rock/metal cross over bands. The crowds love them all. The music is heavy and the bands are talented, what more do you need?
Today I am going to focus on three of the death metal bands I've come across from the Whittier area of Los Angeles: Syrebris, Insentient, and Infinite Death. More...
