With the aid of Revolver's Hottest Chick in Metal/In This Moment vocalist, MARIA BRINK, and BLASKO, Ozzy Osbourne's bassist, Minneapolis prog-metallers IRON THRONES learned the importance of image in the music industry and recently took their style to the streets on a shopping trip in downtown Manhattan. Check out their purchases and new look in the newest episode of SCION'S NO LABEL NEEDED series:
The No Label Needed Series presented by Scion in collaboration with MetalInsider.net is helping IRON THRONES leave labels behind and take on the industry all on their own. The series will follow the development of the band showing viewers how it's done all along the way.
The members of IRON THRONES have been blogging since the start of the experience and had a successful first live chat on www.Justin.tv/iron_thrones on Sunday the 11th and will be conducting many more in the coming weeks.
The series is not only meant to be a learning experience for one band, it is meant to teach any dedicated musician who wants to learn how to properly market their craft. Readers will be able to interact with contest partners and contributing musicians and professionals through the site to get some real insight into specific areas of expertise.

Guitarist Dan Sorber of New Jersey progressive metal band Ferox Canorus has posted a video lesson on their song "Abandon." The video is the first part of a series entitled "Riffology." Watch the video at this location.
Dan Sorber comments on the episode, "Abandon is a progressive metal meets Iron Maiden style of song; covering everything from atmospheric violin style melodies, melodic solos, aggressive riffing and sheer speed metal madness. In this episode we cover the interlude riff. This particular idea makes a great alternate picking exercise but I also let you see, in part, how I organize the fretboard. What lies beneath the riff is a great, melodic approach to writing riffs."

Behemoth’s recent album “Evangelion” has received high praise from both fans and critics since its release in August 2009, even seeing the band break out into the mainstream in it’s native Poland. Now it has been bestowed with official recognition of it’s huge success, as the band received nominations in five categories at the Polish Grammy Awards (known as “Fryderyki” in Poland). “Evangelion” won in the “Best Heavy Metal Album” category. Frontman Nergal commented on the award:
“There are different priorities we care about and hunt for and awards is the last on this list, I can assure you. However, we are happy that someone noticed our hard work and determination and this award is proof that 'Evangelion' definitely made a statement! We couldn’t be more proud of this record. Thank you for voting.”

Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, who filled in on Avenged Sevenfold's new album after the death of James "The Rev" Sullivan, has issued the following statement about performing live with Avenged Sevenfold for their 2010 tour dates:
"After having had such an amazing experience recording my drum tracks for the new Avenged Sevenfold album, we all knew it would be awesome if I'd be able to do some touring with the band after its release.
"I am happy to say that the timing worked out perfectly that my touring cycle with Dream Theater (and Transatlantic) was coming to an end just as A7X's was scheduled begin! (well, perfect for everyone except my poor family!) Although I wish I could stay on board with A7X in a more permanent capacity, the reality is that I am committed to Dream Theater as my main priority (that is my baby after all!), and I will need to resume work with DT to start a new album at some point in 2011. However, I will be able to join my brothers in Avenged Sevenfold for at least the duration of their touring throughout 2010...and hopefully this will give them the time to continue to heal and get comfortable back on the road....
"You can look at me like the band's 'rebound drummer' to buy them some time until they are comfortable and ready to make a commitment to somebody new for full-time relationship in their future! In the meantime, I am real excited to hit the road with the boys...to bring my drumming from their new album to life on stage and to honor The Rev with all of their older material.... Hey, do I get to have a cool, bad-ass stage name now?"
Ireland's For Ruin has checked in with the following update about the band's upcoming activity:
"Thanks to all who came out early enough to see us open the Bolt Thrower/Rotting Christ show last weekend at the Button Factory in Dublin - amazing to see a full room when you're the first band on and the response was amazing. Thanks to all of you who supported us by picking up CD's and shirts - its hugely appreciated and you are supporting the band's future directly, nobody else! We've added a couple of photos from the show, more will follow in due course.
"The summer will be relatively quiet for us - we are working on 3 Irish shows for September (TBC) and we are writing new music. We hope to get to the UK/Europe later in the year but the cancelled UK dates last month cost us and it will take some time before we are reday to go again."

Lacrimosa is set to release a 20th anniversary album titled "Schattenspiel" on May 7th, 2010. The band has now issued the following comment about the release:
"The one or other might ask himself, why don't Lacrimosa simply release a 'Best of Compilation'?
Very easy: a 'Best of Compilation' is for people who don't really know a band and with such a compilation of hits they shall be forced to like this band. But what about those who are listening to a band for many years and who have all their CDs already? What shall they do with a 'Best of'?
For the 20th anniversary we didn't want to make a CD for those who didn't care about Lacrimosa in the past, we made a CD for those whom we have to thank for this anniversary: you, our audience!
"And since we've been asked by you many times if we could finally release those compositions that we didn't include to regular albums, we now meet your wishes and present 16 unreleased and 2 brand new tracks on 'Schattenspiel'! But, some may ask now, what shall we do with left-over songs? At Lacrimosa there is no class society between the songs, because our aim is not to write hits, our aim is to express feelings and feelings are relative. If we didn't release a song at its time there was always a reason for it. An example: on 'Schattenspiel' (= shadow play) there are compositions which were as important to the development of Lacrimosa as supporting pillars in the house of our art and we couldn't just pull them out of this building back in those days. Karen Page has checked in with the following update about the band's activity:
"So here we are. May 2010. This marks three years of karen page. Where to start. There's a lot of memories, and most of you don't give a shit. But this band started out as a fun activity between four friends. Jonny, anthony, rick, and myself. The music was pretty much a joke in the beginning. We were at the end of high school, in between bands, and we were just trying to pass the time. It was fun but the music was pretty much, well, awful. But we didn't give two shits. We played a bunch of shows on those shitty songs.
"Then the formula was changed. Anthony moved to guitar and we added a new drummer, chris. Chris was a great asset. Having him behind us helped us tremendously. It helped us tighten up. It made us feel like a band. It made us solid (well, kind of). So we recorded a 20 minute long ep entitled: ‘operator, operator, the phone is dead!’. Which we marketed as ‘the greatest album of all time.’ pffftttttt.... I listen to that record now and i can't believe how far we have come as musicians and as a band in three short years. Somehow, about a year after the release of ootpid. We got signed to Rotten Records. Someone wanted to sign us off of that ep. Pffftttttt..... Seriously though. So we singed and immediately began working new songs. More...
