Just For Fun
The June 12th 2008 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine features the cover story 'The 100 Greatest Guitar Songs Of All Time'. Explaining the feature is the blurb:
This is what makes a great rock & roll guitar sound: an irresistible riff; a solo or jam that takes you higher every time you hear it; the final power chord that pins you to the wall and makes you hit "play" again and again. Every song here has those thrills. But these are rock's greatest guitar moments because of what's inside the notes: hunger, fury, despair and joy, often all at once. You hear the blues, gospel and rockabilly that came before, transormed by the need to say something new and loud, right away. Rock & roll has been the sound of independence for half a century. The guitar is still its essential, liberating voice. These are the 100 reasons why.
The top 10 guitar songs according to the article are:
1. "Johnny B. Goode" - Chuck Berry
2. "Purple Haze" - Jimi Hendrix
3. "Crossroads" - Cream
4. "You Really Got Me" - The Kinks
5. "Brown Sugar" - The Rolling Stones
6. "Eruption" - Van Halen
7. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" - The Beatles
8. "Stairway To Heaven" - Led Zeppelin
9. "Statesboro Blues" - The Allman Brothers Band
10. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Nirvana

In an interview with mtv.com, Slipknot percussionist Shawn Crahan declares that Slipknot is the "hardest" and "heaviest" band.
"Listen, we are the hardest ever," he said. "We blow all bands away. I don't give a fuck who your band is. I've probably played with your band, and you don't show me shit. So, it's like, is this band heavy? Oh, yeah, we're the heaviest. We're heavy thinkers, heavy hitters, heavy writers and heavy people, but it's emotionally heavy. There's a lot of emotion on this record, and we're all on the same page with our own emotions, so you're finally seeing the kings of all the courts bringing their kingdom's jewels in for one gigantic war."
Besides discussing the upcoming LP, he also went on to say:
"No one has done what we have done, this is a war, man. The shit that we do, nine guys trying to fucking write together, and keep this insanity going? Does anybody take the time to realize that? For me, this is like going to Vietnam, serving your tour and then the government asking you to do another tour because you're a badass. We've got 10 purple hearts, and we're fucking killers. This isn't your rock and roll; this is our rock and roll."

Florida death / grind band Success Will Write Apocalypse Across The Sky issued and apology on their MySpace page for cancelling their show in Tampa on May 23rd.
"We deeply regret our inability to perform on May 23rd @ the Crowbar in Tampa, FL. There was and still is critical work to be done in the studio that could/can not be delayed. We do NOT make regular cancellations, and this really broke our hearts. Please get a hold us here on Myspace if you came out to see us that night... shoot us a message and we will make it up to each and every one of you."
According to the Associated Press, the Kiss Army fan club has an enthusiastic new recruit: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Rice was in the Swedish capital of Stockholm on Thursday for an international conference on Iraq. Kiss had a sold-out concert to play Friday.
"I was thrilled," Rice said of her late-night encounter with current Kiss members Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Eric Singer, and Tommy Thayer in the executive lounge of the Sheraton Hotel, where they signed autographs and handed out backstage passes and T-shirts to her staff.
"It was really fun to meet Kiss and Gene Simmons," she told reporters, noting that they seemed well informed about current events. The band had asked if she could stop by after she finished dinner with the Swedish foreign minister, and Rice—who says her favorite Kiss tune is "Rock and Roll All Nite"—apparently readily agreed.
Finnish death metal band Crystalic have parted ways with their vocalist Jarno Moberg and replaced him with Matti Auerkallio.
Jarno gave a statement on the band's MySpace page:
"It's time to go ahead. I have to leave Crystalic because my heart isn't 100% in the band anymore. I've always been singer/songwriter and I want to continue my own musical journey. That means composing my own music from now on (as it was before Crystalic). I wish Toni and the rest of the band great future on their career."
The band further explained:
"On the same breath we'd like to announce the addition of Matti Auerkallio (ex-Farmakon, Foxy Flammable, Avenie, Duality) as Crystalic's new singer/frontman. Matti is a really talented multi-instrumentalist and he growls like a demon and sings like an angel! So expect some clean vocals on our next album. The recordings are scheduled for the next fall."
Kreator leader Mille Petrozza has posted the following message regarding pre-production of the bands new album:
"The pre-production in our rehearsal studios went really smooth. Moses' way of working with bands takes place more on an emotional then on a technical level, which means the album will sound very raw and direct. We´re trying to capture Kreator's live energy and will be using nice vintage analog equipment for the recordings this time. Expect a massacre!"
Unfortunately for Kreator fans, the album isn't due until January 2009.

Delian League issue the following update on their MySpace page:
New Jersey-based metal band DELIAN LEAGUE has announced that it has changed its identity for the group's upcoming EP, "Before The Body Gets Cold", and will henceforth be known as THE NEW AFFLICTION. The EP features five brand-new songs. Three tracks from "Before The Body Gets Cold" will be available on their official MySpace page.
Drummer Joe Dooling commented on the upcoming changes: "We're all very excited to get this music out there. People have been waiting a long time for new music from us, and we're glad to be able to deliver it, along with a new name and new members to the lineup. Our singer and guitarist have contributed a lot, and what we've got now is very different from the DELIAN LEAGUE sound. It just makes more sense for all of us to look at this as an entirely different band rather than 'DELIAN LEAGUE Part Two.'” More...
German death metal band Hackneyed has released a second video for the making of their Nuclear Blast debut album, "Death Prevails." The album, produced by Roger Grüninger and mastered by Achim Köhler, is due out on July 25th.
VIOLATOR, Brazil's finest export of thrash metal since Sepultura, is finally set to release their debut album, "Chemical Assault," in Europe on July 21, 2008.
Fresh off a two month tour of South America and having recently featured on the THRASHING LIKE A MANIAC compilation, VIOLATOR is ready to unleash the thrash assault on Europe this July. "Chemical Assault" will be released on CD in Europe by EARACHE RECORDS.
VIOLATOR frontman PONEY had the following message:
"We are really happy to get our record out in Europe by Earache. Maniax from all places are writing us, it's amazing. Chemical Assault was done with no big pretensions, in a total DIY spirit. It's a great honor to see that it will be released by the same label that one day released Scum or the Concrete Sox/Heresy split. To see how far this is getting, it's totally unbelievable. We can't wait to travel to the old continent to thrash and have some fun!"
Check out a recent video clip of VIOLATOR thrashing it up in Santiago, Chile on YouTube.
SANCTITY have posted this bulletin on their MySpace page:
"Hey guys, this is probably long overdue. So here is the rap about what's been going on with us. WE DID NOT BREAK UP!!!!!!!! Yes we are still together. Basically to make a long story short Jared (vocals, guitar) had a baby and decided to step down as our singer guitar player. Derek as well decided to leave for his own personal reasons, there was no bad blood with anyone, those guys are our brothers and we had a good run with them. So now for the future of Sanctity, we have three new mambers Scott Smith on bass, Zach Jordan on rhythm guitar, And Nate Queen filling the shoes of frontman, we will have new pics up soon for everyone to see as well as some new songs once we are done. Zeff and I have never been happier with a lineup before. It's sad to see the guys go, but it's inspiring to have these new guys with us. We can't be happier with the response and support we have had from everyone so far. Make sure to stay updated with all our new stuff.
UK based deathcore act Bring Me The Horizon have set "Suicide Season" as the title of their second album, which is due out on September 22nd.
Frontman Oli Sykes says of the recording process: "We recorded 'Count Your Blessings' in the middle of Birmingham and it was very easy to get distracted. Arboga is a village with nothing in it apart from a tiny shop and that was it. We actually lived at the studio so it meant we could all just focus on the music. Fredrik (Nordström- producer) was a cool guy, and he taught us how to do stuff, so at night after he'd gone home we'd still be recording the album."
Oakland, CA's LAAZ ROCKIT have signed with Massacre Records. The band's new album, "Left For Dead", will be released through the label on July 25. It will also come in a limited edition digipak with bonus tracks.
The tracklisting for the album is as follows: 'Brain Wash', 'Delirium Void', 'Erased', 'My Euphoria', 'Ghost In The Mirror', 'Turmoil', 'Liar', 'Desolate Oasis', 'No Man', 'Outro'.
Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has issued a statement clearing up rumours about his rehab stint. Apparantly he checked himself into rehab following a series of foot surgeries. You can read the statement below:
“The doctors told me the pain in my feet could be corrected but it would require a few surgeries over time. The ‘foot repair’ pain was intense, greater than I'd anticipated. The months of rehabilitative care and the painful strain of physical therapy was traumatic. I really needed a safe environment to recuperate where I could shut off my phone and get back on my feet. Make no mistake, Aerosmith has no plans to stop rocking. There’s a new album to record, then another tour.”
Abigail Williams has officially disclosed the addition of drummer Samus Paulicelli (ex-Mutiny) to their line-up. You can see Paulicelli in action here and below. Abigail Williams had utilized a guest drummer during the recent recording of their new album.
"In The Shadows Of A Thousands Suns" as the title of its new album, due this summer via Candlelight Records. The recording was done in Notodden, Norway, with guest drummer Trym (EMPEROR, ZYKLON) laying down tracks at Akkerhaugen Lydstudio with engineer Thorbjørn Akkerhuagen (EMPEROR, ZYKLON, WINDIR). Endwell has been kicked off of The Mosh Lives Tour that Emmure is headlining. Here's and update from the band:
"First off, we want to apologize to everyone who was planning on coming out and seeing us on the MOSH LIVES tour but unfortunately as of yesterday (Tuesday May 27th) we have been kicked off of the tour because of a T-Shirt....yep that's right. Apparently some people can't take a joke. We were stoked for this tour and looking forward to seeing a lot of old friends and playing some fun shows. Without getting into all the details well leave it at this; some of our good friends receive an email from a certain Tyrant telling them that if we weren't removed from the tour immediately that they would have hell to pay and the outcome was us being asked to leave the tour. We basically drove 30 hours straight to meet up with the tour in Texas and now 2 days later were driving 20 hours back home, it was a good waste of a few hundred dollars in gas.
"Needless to say we're beyond bummed....either way you guys should still go out and support the Mosh Lives tour. There are some great bands and its a great show everynight. We want to thank Recon, After The Burial, Ligeia, Emmure and On Broken Wings for being cool dudes and hopefully we'll get back out there with a few of you again at some point.
"All in all this is just another bump in the road and were not gonna let it slow us down. Our new EP (Revenge Is A Healthy Motive) came out today on Itunes and through our online store, were heading up to Canada in 2 weeks with our pals in MEANS and OCEANS and then right after that we head out on a FULL US tour with Stray From The Path and The Ghost Inside starting in Cali in July. Can't hold us down.....if any hardcore bands are reading this and wanna go on tour hit us up!!! We're gonna be doin our full length at the end of the summer and we're not looking to be home..EVER!"
You can see the shirt design (which appears to be taking a jab at Victory Records, who recenlty dropped the band) in question that got the band kicked off the tour on their Blogspot page.
Victory owner Tony Brummel previously commented on the band's release:
"There is no drama here. Bands and labels go in opposite directions all of the time. Endwell and I are totally cool and they knew about this last week. They are young guys and understandably a bit shocked still and emotional. They know that I will help them in any way that I can in the future. Who knows, we might even end up working together again."
