Yesterday, the news broke that the world of heavy metal had lost a true giant. The death of Slayer guitarist, Jeff Hanneman was a shock to many followers of metal, and especially for fans of the band, who are known to be amongst the most manically devoted in the history of music.
Almost immediately after people learned of the news, fans of Jeff and Slayer celebrated in a fashion befitting of the man: By getting drunk and blasting "Reign In Blood" as loud as they could. Hanneman's death is arguably the hardest hitting news since Ronnie James Dio passed away three years ago, and perhaps the biggest shock to thrash fans since Metallica bass player Cliff Burton was killed in an automobile accident in 1986, and at only 49 years of age, he will be considered by many to have been taken from us too soon.
Jeff Hanneman's journey began on January 31st 1964, when he was born in Oakland, California to a German father who fought for the Allies in the Second World War. This, along with the participation of his brothers in the Vietnam war, forged a lifelong interest in all things military for Jeff, a subject he would regularly cover in his lyrical contributions to Slayer. In 1981, Hanneman went to audition for a local band where he met another young guitarist named Kerry King. The two got on well and began jamming covers of songs by the likes of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, before deciding to form their own band, the lineup of which was completed by the addition of King's former Quits bandmate Tom Araya, and pizza delivery guy, Dave Lombardo. Hanneman stated that one of his favourite memories of the early days was whenever people booed them, assured by his confidence to actually get on stage and perform. Of the four members, he was the one who enjoyed punk music the most, a genre he claimed he "forced" onto Dave Lombardo to the point where in 1984, the two of them, along with future Suicidal Tendencies guitarist Rocky George, formed a punk band named, Pap Smear, which folded a year later on the advice of producer, Rick Rubin. Power thrashers Sanktuary are proud to announce they will be unleashing their debut album "Something Fierce" this coming July 2nd, 2013 via Canadian metal label Spread The Metal Records. Bassist Cole Hume comments:
"This journey has been quite the experience and we are incredibly stoked to unleash Something Fierce to the masses. So crack a cold one, strap on some clean undies and grab an umbrella 'cause this shit storm's coming soon to a record store near you."
Spawning from high school friendship and growing into something much more epic, Sanktuary kicked things off with two back-to-back EPs – 2009's self-titled release and 2010's "Black Magic Brew" – and soon followed that up with a massive move from Whitehorse, Yukon to Halifax, Nova Scotia. More...

CVLT Nation is now offering a stream of “Vicious Consolation/Virtuous Totality,” the debut album from Portuguese crust/grind-metallers Utopium, which is scheduled for release on May 13th via Bleak Recordings/Raging Planet.
Check out the album here or through the player below. The following press release was also issued about the band:
"Utopium gathered in Lisbon, in 2007, with the initial line-up comprising R. on vocals, T. and JR. on guitar, J. on drums and D. on bass. The five-piece recorded and released their first demo in late 2008, followed by the first live performances before B. replaced D. on bass. Almost a year later, the group sees its version of 'My Philosophy,' from the iconic 'Inhale / Exhale,' included in the compilation 'A Tribute to Nasum' released through indie German Power-It-Up.
"Still totally DIY, they self-financed the recording and release of their highly anticipated debut EP in 2010. Titled 'Conceptive Prescience' and limited to 100 copies on CD, the album quickly sells out and gathers a lot of praise by the press.
"2011 marks another line-up change – with P. replacing B. on bass – and the release of a split 7” with Lifedeceiver. Over the years, Utopium established a solid reputation live thanks to devastating performances, having shared stages with internationally renowned bands like Rotten Sound, Misery Index, Despised Icon or Wormrot and played festivals like Bracara Extreme and Milhões de Festa."
Victorius is due to release "The Awakening" this coming July 16th, 2013 via SPV/Sonic Attack in North America. The following press release was issued about the band:

"Their second self-produced album, titled fittingly 'The Awakening' landed them a deal with Berlin based Sonic Attack Records, the new label of former Noise Records Boss Walterbach, and an off-shoot of his new Management firm.
"Victorius, formed around composer Dirk Scharsich and singer David Baßin, understands itself in line of the European Power Metal School of the likes such as Mystic Prophecy, Stormwarrior, Hammerfall, and Gamma Ray. Since 2006 the band has been active in the local metal underground in Saxonia and neighboring states. The first self produced recordings for their first 3-track CD where produced in the same year and used for securing a series of live-appearances throughout 2007 and 2008. More...

Berlin-based classic rockers Kadavar proudly present the official video clip for "Come Back Life," taken from recently released second studio album and Nuclear Blast debut "Abra Kadavar."
The clip was shot, directed, and edited by Nathini van der Meer and Annikki Heinemann of "Oddisee Films" during the band’s journey through the USA in March 2013. Kadavar comments:
"It was the trip of our lives, swaying between heaven and hell. Our baggage got lost and neither did we have a place to sleep for the time of the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, nor a backline or money. As if this wasn’t enough, the ’64 Ford Galaxy that we had bought after a long search blew up in our faces after ten minutes on the highway. Still we met many kind people whose help made it possible for us to reach San Francisco in the end. Our friends Nathini and Annikki have accompanied us during the entire three weeks and have captured footage that’ll stick in our memories forever. After this trip, one of the song’s lines fits even better: Come back life, all is forgiven now…”

The south is known for working hard, playing hard, and eating hearty. Steel Panther is known for getting hard, playing hard, and eating lots and lots of hot, wet, and readily available... food. (Yeah, let's say "food", because the south is real polite-like.) It was only natural that the band would make Tennessee a stop on a tour eventually -- this one was the band's first ever in Nashville. Vocalist Michael Starr commented mid-set that it was also their best show ever in Nashville.
Admitting in public that you take an interest in the music of Steel Panther is similar to announcing to everyone that you think about sex and guitar solos more than the average college freshman, which is usually a risky move. However, if you have protection (others who like Steel Panther with you) and you're not a sexual predator, you'll be fine. Nashville knew this and came out in droves to Marathon Music Works on the night of May 1st to celebrate the indulgent feelings that go along with raising the horns in the air for the band most synonymous with the word "sex" (so much so that porn production company Brazzers sponsored the band's 2012 Australian tour).
