Sepultura Is Still Sepultura

“That’s not the pass for tonight,” muttered the venue staffer checking IDs, wearing a dismissive expression suspiciously resembling a dildo. “I don’t know what to tell you.”

I’d just conducted interviews – coming soon – with guitarists Andreas Kisser (of Sepultura) and Moyses Kolesne (of Krisiun) backstage at Higher Ground in South Burlington, Vermont. With no additional press to handle, Sepultura’s tour manager had scrapped the planned guest list, handing me instead a photo/access pass from a prior show. As this straightforward story was received with borderline indifference and a blasé shrug, I was pulled aside to allow lucky ticketholders entry. There I stood waiting under the gatekeepers’ stone cold gazes, like a failed freeloader – the lowest form of tool at a concert. More...

Gwar Issues Update On Tour Dates And Album

Fresh off the latest six-week orgy of blood, booze, and missing children that was the second half of GWAR's "Return of the World Maggot/Farewell, Flattus Maximus" North American tour, the members of rock and roll's hardest working band have returned to the vastness of their Antarctica fortress to begin work on "a shitload of projects, all destined to rule..." said lead-singer Oderus Urungus. It all adds up to a summer of debauched excess for GWAR fans.

The band capped off the latest tour in grand fashion, sticking to the four-piece line-up that was thrust upon our plucky barbarian overlords after the tragic exodus of guitarist Flattus Maximus' from this mudball planet to the eternity of the cosmos, which occurred in November of last year as the band was just getting rolling on a huge two-part tour of North America.

The band elected to stick it out not just for the remainder of the fall tour, but retain the line-up with Balsac, the Jaws of Death, as sole guitar player. Every night the band would end the set with a special tribute to Cory Smoot, a musician whose talent was so immense that no one could ever fill his giant rubber feet, thus compelling GWAR to officially retire the character of Flattus Maximus. Faced with the daunting task of finding a new Scumdog who can match the standard of excellence the band demands, GWAR has activated certain contingency plans, and the process that will hopefully lead to a new and hellish alignment with some kind of hideous creature, one capable of slaying thousands with just one note. Needless to say, auditions are not "open." GWAR is also writing material for a new album, which could be out as early as several thousand years from now. More...

Destruction Adds More 30th Anniversary Shows

Iconic German thrash trio, Destruction, will kick off its North American 30th year anniversary tour this weekend with shared direct support from Vital Remains and Warbringer (who will be alternating each night) plus Pathology. An updated list of all the confirmed shows can be seen below.

Commented Destruction frontman and bassist, Schmier, “A killer package for old-school thrash and death metal freaks! This may be the best set list we’ve ever had – the essence of thrash metal history united with our new anthems. We’ll have more classics than ever in the set, more from the first records for sure.

"Can’t wait to hit the road again!!! Some North American cities have a great audience for this old school sound again, and it wasn’t always like that. The main intention for this second North American tour within a year is that we could not play all markets that we wanted to book last time. Now, we’ll play some new places and return to those cities that gave us a great welcome last year like New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Montreal. Warbringer are a perfect match to a Destruction bill. They are one of the best new thrash bands and keep our ‘80s spirit alive. It will be great to have them with us! We’ve played with Vital Remains before; awesome guys and a brutal band. They bring a good variety into the billing. Thrash/death metal is always the best mix, that’s why Pathology complete the show!”

Destruction is touring in support of its 11th studio release, "Day Of Reckoning" (Nuclear Blast) - the first album to feature new drummer, Vaaver (Indukti, ex-Unsun) – which debuted at #54 on the Hard Music Albums chart, #58 on the New Artist/Heatseekers Album chart, and #143 on the Independent Current Albums chart the week following its release in March 2011. The album entered Germany’s Media Control chart at #95. More...

I, The Breather Releases "False Profit" Video

I, The Breather released sophomore full-length "Truth and Purpose" in February, and has spent the majority of 2012 on tour alongside August Burns Red, Silverstein, Upon A Burning Body and Betraying The Martyrs, among others. Look for the group to also perform on the Sumerian Records stage at the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival all summer long.

The band's new music video for the track, “False Profit,” can now be viewed below. This is the band's first official music video from "Truth and Purpose" and was directed by Thunder Down Country Productions.

Morgan Wright (drums) states: "Our objective with this clip was to create a dark and edgy video. It's very different from our last video. That was more of a straight up performance based video capturing the band in a live element. This video allowed us to use props, add in some acting and have a legit concept. When it came to acting, Shawn (vocals) stepped it up and took on the task of the protagonist.

"The thing that stands out most in this video is the massive python we used. The overall theme is Shawn representing God and the serpent representing the devil. The scenario portrays God rising up and taking on the false prophecy of the devil. A false prophet is someone who will arise to sway mankind into idolatry. We are very proud of this video and hope you enjoy it.” More...

A Conversation With Diecast

As Boston-based metalcore veterans Diecast embarked on their current tour (sponsored by none other than Metal Underground), I was dispatched to cover the inaugural gig at Mill Street Brews in Southbridge, Massachusetts (report here). Following the band's set, I sat down with guitarist Jon Kita, frontman Paul Stoddard, and bassist Eddie Barton for a casual chat. For half an hour, we discussed all things Diecast throughout their fifteen-year history and beyond, including a taste of new music to come. No topic was off-limits, and we even explored an intriguing new moshing concept involving a piñata, which I expect to see in a Metal Underground Pit Stories column any day now. The conversation lasted until we were kicked out as the venue shut down for the night. The full transcript follows: More...

An Interview With Occultation

There’s something very nasty hiding within the confines of Occultation’s debut album “Three & Seven.” Inspired by bands like Black Sabbath and King Crimson, this trio based out of NYC has a doom-inspired take on progressive rock. Comprised of vocalist/drummer V, bassist/vocalist MAL, and guitarist/organist/vocalist EMM (of Negative Plane fame), Occultation is heavy on the metaphors and occultist themes, though not in a blunt manner like Ghost and The Devil’s Blood. Occultation has done a great job of making these songs both evil to the core, and catchy to the ears. I was able to throw a few questions via e-mail to the band, and V and EMM were gracious enough to answer in detail about the recording of “Three & Seven” and recreating these songs in a live setting. Averse Sefira Calls It Quits

American black metal titans Averse Sefira has officially disbanded. The band formed in 1996, and went on to make their mark through Europe and the Americas, performing with other notable black metal groups like Dark Funeral, Gorgoroth, Watain, Marduk, 1349, Absu, Antaeus, and
Secrets of the Moon.

The band gained a respectable following despite a fiercely independent stance that garnered them a complex reputation in the underground. They achieved wider exposure with their signing to Candlelight Records in 2007 and the release of their highly-rated fourth LP, "Advent Parallax", the following year. Over the last decade, they also appeared in multiple documentaries and books examining metal culture.

Averse Sefira was known for dealing in esoteric themes, involved lyrics, and fractured musical styles that were regarded as both ambitious and confounding in equal measures. They were also known for strong ties with several veteran death metal acts, many of whom regularly touted the band in interviews.

Formal farewell statements from founding members Sanguine Mapsama and Wrath Sathariel Diabolus can be found at the band's official blog at this location.

Gotthard Posts New Music Video Online

Swiss hard rock outfit Gotthard has posted their new music video online for the song, "Starlight." You can check it out below. The video was filmed in an old animal food factory near Berlin, which has already made a name for itself: among others, some scenes from the film Inglorious Bastards were shot there.

"During the filming of the video, we could feel again that the chemistry between us and the fans was great," the musicians said. "We are sure this will be seen in the clip."

For the band, it is very important that some of those who have been fans for years should play a role in the filming. "We simply have the feeling that not only those of us in the band have become even closer but also our Gotthard-family, those who are in our surroundings, are close to us and shared with us the difficult unhappy months after Steve’s death. We want to show this in the video: we are a community and we are rocking together again!" More...
