Tim Millar’s big day has finally arrived. Millar, guitarist of Canadian metal powerhouse Protest The Hero, has been growing his beard for three years in hopes of competing in the 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships. This Saturday, May 23, the Championships will be held in Anchorage, Alaska and Millar will be competing in the “Alaskan Whaler” category.
A film crew will be accompanying Tim as he and Beard Team Canada compete for the first time in this global event. Fans can log on here to support the team and more information about the competition can be found at worldbeardchampionships.com.
Although Tim recently ranked #19 in Metal Hammer Magazine’s “Best Beards in Metal” feature, he tentatively plans to shave the whole thing off when he returns home.
“I’d like to raise money for Locks of Love, a charity that makes wigs for cancer patients under 18. Even though they won’t accept a beard hair donation, I’m cutting off and donating my hair and if I can raise enough money through the Beard Team Canada site, I’ll also shave off my beard after the competition and start fresh for 2011,” says Millar. “It’s for a good cause and if we raise enough money, I’ll reveal my chin that has been hiding for the last 3 years. I’m sure you’re all curious to see if I really do have a chin.”
Many people might not realize that this month marks the 20th anniversary of the release of MORBID ANGEL's landmark release, "Altars of Madness." The album has had tremendous impact on many guitarist from all genres of metal. Among them is BLOOD RED THRONE guitarist Død; who stated the following:
"When I started listening to death metal in 1991, this album was already a classic and an innovative album at that time. I remember we tried to pick "Maze of Torment" and "Chapel of Ghouls," but it was
hard to figure out all the riffs."
Død, a MORBID ANGEL lifer, also mentions: "One of the first death metal gigs I went to was Morbid Angel in 1995. Immortal was support and Hellhammer did the drums!"
BLOOD RED THRONE's upcoming new album, "Souls Of Damnation" is due to be released by Earache Records on June 1st in Europe and June 30th in the USA. More...
Testament is currently headlining their own North American Tour, supporting their 2008 album “The Formation of Damnation.” This is after a stint on the Metal Masters tour last summer, when they were disappointingly relegated to be the first band on stage, and ended up playing only 25 minutes a night. While that may seems reasonable when the other bands are Judas Priest, Heaven & Hell and Motorhead, it is still a disappointment to see a band like Testament get the shaft. This tour is the complete opposite, with Testament ruling the night despite strong performances from Unearth and Lazarus A.D. While the openers gave a good shot at upstaging the headliner, in the end everyone knew their place.
Harpo’s in Detroit has a unique setup. First off it is a particularly blighted part of Detroit. The evening starts by going through a metal detector while being closely watched by security guards carrying big hand guns. The doors opened at 6:00 pm, but there was hardly anyone there right at 6:00, and the parking lot had no tailgating. After the show the 24-hour Popeye’s next door was completely empty. More...
