Dream Theater Drummer Discusses Favorite Albums

Progressive metal legends Dream Theater make their much-anticipated return this year with their new album Systematic Chaos. Systematic Chaos takes rock and metal to epic extremes: The Pantera-esque "The Dark Eternal Night" portrays the battle between a heroic protagonist and a demonic antagonist, while the "The Ministry of Lost Souls" and "In the Presence of Enemies" are reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and Rush's "La Villa Strangiato," respectively. To celebrate the release, we asked drummer Mike Portnoy for his ten favourite albums...

It breaks down into two halves; one is 5 classic albums, and then 5 modern albums.

Going chronologically, the first one would be Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) by The Beatles. It was released 3 months after I was; I was born in April 67 and the album came out in July 67, so it's a nice landmark for an album that has been around for my entire lifetime. It's an album that broke every rule and created a million new ones, everything from the conceptual zeal to the album artwork, the gatefold sleeve, and the production, everything about it was completely groundbreaking. The Beatles are my number one favourite all time band, so having to pick one single album from them is always rough, it could change from day to day; I could easily of very easily picked Revolver or Abbey Road or Rubber Soul, but it seems like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the one that if you held a gun to my head. More...

Mutiny Bassist/Vocalist Updates From the Studio

The bassist and vocalist of New Jersey's melodic metallers Mutiny checked in from Legacy Recording Studios.

Studio Report 1: Bass and Drums complete!

It took 17 hours to complete the bass and drums yesterday, working from 2AM until 7PM with 1 hour sleep after sound check. Hit up LegacyRecordingStudios.com and find studio A, that's where we recorded/ate/slept. Our lounge reeked of weed because Wu-Tang Clan recorded there the night before!

Ryan Kelly, our producer, is doing a fantastic job. He's 18 years old, graduated high school at 16, and then went on to graduate from the world-renowned Full Sail in Orlando. Years ago, he won a contest and got to guitar solo on stage with Arch Enemy!

First, Sam set up the drums and R. Kelly set up the microphones all around the kit, about 14 or so. Sam really tore that shit up! He played as hard as he does on stage, which is a sound we were finally able to capture. He also wrote some great material, right on the spot!

I recorded bass as Brandon and Sam slept. Once that was finished, we headed back to Jersey. Lu is next. All of our sessions are being filmed.

My lesson with Melissa Cross today went great, she really knows how to bring out the best of my voice. Find Mutiny on her client list at MelissaCross.com. She will be coaching me during my vocal recordings.

Here's the tracklist:

According to a press release, "the seven song opus, entitled Red, is Caveat's third and most elaborate album to date, showcasing their steady writing and musical growth over 2006 which has resulted in a much more focused collection of songs delivering both a heavier and more technical approach to the songwriting. Caveat, comprised of lead vocalist/guitarist Greg Musgrave, lead guitarist Joe Sikorski, bassist/vocalist Terry Baldwin and drummer Casey Rogers have assembled a collection of multi-layered musical complexity that breaks all rules of conventionality, while still maintaining the key elements that have gained Caveat their broad audience across Canada over the last 5 years."

Red's tracklisting is as follows: 'Red', 'Sin', 'M.O.B.', 'Vindication', 'Vicious Circle', 'My Messiah', 'Within This Weakness'.

Crystal Eyes Part Ways With Guitarist

Sweden's CRYSTAL EYES have issued the following update:
"Niclas (Karlsson - pictured left) has after only a year in the band decided to leave to focus on other things in life. He told us he had lost his inspiration to play guitar and rehearse, and he felt it wasn’t right to stay. Though sadly, we respect he’s decision and whish him all the best."

"So here we are searching for a new guitarist. If you love Crystal Eyes’ music, have the geographical possibility to rehearse, perform and record with the band, and are willing to give 100%, then you could be the one. But remember that Crystal Eyes is a twin guitar band so we’re not looking for any YNGWIE MALMSTEEN copycats."

"If you’re interested please send mp3 samples and/or links (both rhythm and solo guitar), a few notes about yourself and a picture to mikael@crystaleyes.net. Use that address for any questions you might have as well."

Lillian Axe Bump New Album To July

The new LILLIAN AXE album, Waters Rising, will now surface through Metro City Records on July 17th. The title track can be heard at this location.

Steve Blaze (lead guitars/vocals) commented about the album recently: "This album has been conceptually in the works for years. Waters Rising represents the boiling point factor, that life seems to be a tumultuous ride always on the brink of explosion. These recent times on this planet seem to be proving this point. However, in each individual is the point where you reconcile this within your spirit and peace takes over allowing you to cope more effectively. The songs on this record cover the different ways that we deal with this factor and the fact that everyone is trying to make sense of it."

Tracklisting for Waters Rising: 'Waters Rising', 'Antarctica', 'Become A Monster', 'Quarantine', 'I Have To Die, Goodbye', 'Fear Of Time', 'Until The End Of The World', 'Fields Of Yesterday', 'Thirst', 'The 2nd Of May', 'Deep In The Black', '5'.

Nodes Of Ranvier Talk About Line-up Changes

Nodes Of Ranvier has set the record straight regarding their line-up changes, issuing the following statement:

"As you have probably noticed, we have had some lineup changes over the past year and a half. Ryan Knutson stepped down from his drumming position last summer to spend more time with his wife and his new contracting business. Ryan is currently writing songs on his own so you may hear from him again sometime in the future. Nick Murphy also decided to call it quits for reasons beyond our comprehension and we believe it was best for all parties for this change to take place. We wish both Nick and Ryan the best and hope that they are happy in the endeavors they are now a part of.

Josh Ferrie has taken over on drums and if you caught a show on the recent tour we did with Mans you got a taste of his abilities and what the new album will sound like. You may have seen Josh in the past perform with the likes of Suffer, Fall, and The Blinding Light. We are confident that you will enjoy the direction that Josh's percussive style has brought to the band without loosing the sound this band has become akin to.

Our vocal change brought in Omaha, NE native Kyle Benecke. You may have met Kyle when he filled in with Saved by Grace or his long term vocal showcase with System Failure. Kyle has brought a vocal range that this band has never seen in a frontman and that was what solidified our decision to go with him. Kyle holds a level of forceful screams meshed with discernable annunciation that makes the importance of what he has written on this album stand out."

Meanwhile, Nodes Of Ranvier is preparing to release its Victory Records debut, "Defined By Struggle." The effort features eleven new songs and will hit stores on July 24th.

Pre-Guns N' Roses Axl Rose Songs To Be Released

Rare Axl Rose (GUNS N' ROSES) recordings made while he was a member of the early '80s band RAPIDFIRE will be made available to the public despite Axl's objections to their commercial release, according to former RAPIDFIRE guitarist Kevin Lawrence.

The tapes, which were purportedly recorded in May 1983, have been in storage in the original eight-track format for more than 20 years. The songs featured on the tape are as follows:

01. Ready to Rumble
02. All Night Long
03. The Prowler
04. On the Run
05. Closure

RAPIDFIRE's lineup was as follows:

Axl Rose - Vocals
Kevin Lawrence - Guitar
Mike Hammernik - Bass
Chuck Gordon - Drums

According to Lawrence, Axl's voice on the RAPIDFIRE recording sounds a bit "more Rob Halford"-ish compared to his vocals on "Appetite for Destruction". In addition, the CD's packaging will reportedly include "plenty of pre-tattoo Axl pictures."

Regarding the CD's delay, Lawrence writes, "My attorney has been working with Axl's attorney for some time now trying to come out with a way to release these demos which is acceptible to Axl. Regardless, though, of what he wants, the law states that I can release these at any time and have the full legal right to do so. Because at one time (and if I ever spoke to him now) I considered Axl a friend, I am trying to work beyond the scope of my legal rights with him, out of my respect and admiration for him. Regardless, though, if in the future he chooses not to cooperate, the CD will come out commercially. Once again I am sorry to all of you for the delay, but the legal process moves very slowly."
