Slayer has posted the following message online via Facebook about guitarist Jeff Hanneman dying earlier today:
"Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home.
"Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.
"Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 - 2013)."
Hanneman had also been hospitalized back in 2011 when he contracted necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite, and underwent surgeries, skin grafts, and intense rehab.
Hanneman was replaced on Slayer's subsequent live shows by Gary Holt of Exodus and Pat O'Brien from Cannibal Corpse. More...
The Philadelphia-based progressive metal outfit Surgeon, featuring Sean Bolton (vocals, bass), Lydia Giordano (guitars) and drummer Ruston Grosse (who also doubles as the touring drummer for seminal death metal act Master, ex- Rumpelstiltskin Grinder, Woe), is set to release sophomore effort "Chemical Reign" on May 21st, 2013.
The album was produced by Surgeon and Kevin Antreassian (Dillinger Escape Plan, Mike Portnoy, Russell Allen of Symphony X) at Backroom Studios in Rockaway, New Jersey. According to a press release, "Chemical Reign" finds the group "pushing the sonic envelope by mixing hooks with intricate melodies and crafting each song as an individual piece of art, but still creating a cohesive album that is both ambitious and bold."
“We are super excited to release this record because we see it as the beginning of a new era of what we can create. We've really grown together as a band recording this record and can't wait to reach our fans and new audiences alike,” says guitarist Lydia Giordano. More...

The fourth LP from Japan’s death/doom act Coffins will arrive this Summer in the form of "The Fleshland," the band’s maiden LP under the banner of Relapse Records. The following press release was issued about the band:
"The Fleshland will be the first proper studio album from Coffins since their commended Buried Death album, released by 20 Buck Spin in 2008, undoubtedly making it one of the most awaited death/doom albums of 2013. Recorded late 2012/early 2013 at Tokyo’s Noise Room Studio with engineer Shigenori Kobayashi, and produced by Bungo Uchino and the rest of Coffins, The Fleshland shows the revamped and expanded band lineup smashing down everything in their path, having upped the lineup from a trio to a quartet with a new drummer and full-time vocalist since Buried Death. Nine grisly numbers thunder with the unbeatable mid-paced Coffins stomp, laying down over forty-five minutes of bruising low-end sludge-infiltrated, plodding doom with possibly the best production values in the band’s meaty catalog of carnage. Cvlt Nation has premiered “Eyes of Zamiel,” a new song from Las Vegas-based doomsters Demon Lung. Check out the song here or via the player below.
The track is taken from the band’s forthcoming full-length debut, titled "The Hundredth Name." Recorded with Adam Myatt and Billy Anderson (Neurosis, The Melvins, Sleep) with artwork by English illustrator Tom Bates (Vision of Disorder, Amorphis), the conceptual album will be released via Candlelight Records on June 4th.
Discussing the song, drummer Jeremy Brenton reveals, “‘Eyes of Zamiel’ is the third song in the album’s storyline and sets up the plot lyrically. As a song, it represents a little of everything that we did on the album with groove in the verses, slower epic parts, and vocal harmonies.”

20 Buck Spin this week verifies the pending release of the debut album from Bay Area doom crew Lycus on July 9th, 2013. The "Tempest" track listing is:
1. Coma Burn
The following press release was also issued about the band:
"Having existed since 2008 in some form or another, Lycus relocated to Oakland from Sacramento and recorded/released their Demo MMXI two years ago. The brooding, quality material of the demo not only saw eventual cassette release by Graceless Recordings (run by Mike Meacham of LOSS) and a vinyl release on San Francisco-based Flenser Records, but it immediately caught the attention of Olympia-based 20 Buck Spin -- the label having originated in the East Bay Area and continually having a soft spot for bands of the region -- who brought them onto the label’s roster for the release of their debut album.
"Late in 2012, Lycus entered hometown Earhammer Studios with Greg Wilkinson (Brainoil, Asunder, Pallbearer, Vastum, Samothrace, High On Fire), who captured and mixed the band’s immense Tempest LP. An incredibly mature, diverse and utterly monumental album, the three massive hymns on Tempest range between nine-and-a-half minutes to over twenty. The canvas of this masterwork is classic funeral doom in the territory of Mournful Congregation, Asunder and My Dying Bride, yet the template is varied as LYCUS' palette includes shades of hysteric black metal, old-school death doom pummeling, and even a bit of pull from noise/drone realms. Supporting the renewed style, Cardiant recorded real grand piano for the album at Vanajasali, Hämeenlinna. For the first time Cardiant also used an external producer, Janne Saksa. Southern California's Throwdown will be entering the studio next week to begin working on a new full-length record, with Zeuss mixing.
The new, currently untitled effort is the follow up to “Deathless,” which came out four years ago. Vocalist Dave Peters offers a statement on the current state of the band and the mindset behind making this next record:
"It's really exciting, if not a little nerve-wracking to be recording again. It has been almost 4 years since 'Deathless' came out, which is about twice as long as the time between albums before it. While that has probably been annoying for fans that have been waiting and expecting a new record, it has also been the best thing for the writing process for the new album.
"I'm really meticulous when writing and arranging even the simplest riffs and songs, so I like to take my time. It has been strange and nice having the freedom to come back to a song or part several weeks later with a different perspective after hitting a wall with it.
"We're taking a very minimalist approach with these songs, more like Vendetta and (the first half of) Haymaker. I avoid putting the cart before the horse, but I see the songs on the record coming out stripped down and yet still refined. A two-minute song can arrive at the same place as one that fucks around for six, and while it’s more challenging to get there in less time, it is a lot cooler when you do. I’ve been going back to that when I find myself maybe adding parts or lines that are at risk of being superfluous.
"I’m very proud of 'Deathless' and all the work that went into it, but it wasn't a record that Throwdown fans expected. It was really polarizing on account of that. I’m simply not looking to continue down that stylistic road with these songs. This is going to be a hard record. I look forward to making it as much for myself as for longtime fans of the band."
Transhuman has revealed the artwork for an upcoming new album, which can be viewed below. The band also comments:
"We are extremely pleased to reveal the artwork for our upcoming album, which will feature every single track from the 'Fall of Man' and 'Recreation' EPs, remixed and mastered, plus the 5 brand new tunes. We hope you love this as much as we do. Courtesy of the genius that is Sam Hayles of DOSEproductions." More...

U.S. act The Lurking Corpses has checked in with the following announcement about parting ways with the band's bassist:
"We are sad to announce that the show we are playing with Viking, Vindicator, and Swamp Squat this Friday at The Brass Rail will be the last show for our long time bass player, The Nameless Horror.
"He has been with us for a long time, and has been an extremely important member of this band - he wrote 3 of the songs on our upcoming album, is a great player, amazing live presence, great dude, etc.
"There is no bad blood, drama, or any of that kind of stuff. He is leaving to focus more attention on his other band, Ptahil (excellent black metal/doom/death/thrash/punk stuff- check them out!) Please come out and wish The Nameless Horror a fond farewell. He will be missed..." More...
After canceling the band's appearance at Hexentanz, Markus Toivonen of Ensiferum has now checked in with the following update about missing the Headbangers Weekend:
"Unfortunately Ensiferum have been forced to cancel the show at Headbangers Weekend in Istanbul 5.5.2013, because of my medical condition. My right ear has been blocked and I've been half deaf for nine days now. There is also constant buzzing/noise.
"The whole issue began around 10 days ago, whilst flying back home from our North-American tour. During these nine days I met four different doctors and I've been having hearing tests. Until this point, they had given me hope that my ear would be fine before this upcoming show in Istanbul, but unfortunately it has not recovered.
"Today I met with a second ear doctor who told me that I cannot fly because of the pressure. It seems that the problem is in the inside of the ear. There was also infection in the middle of the ear, which has cleared up since. More tests (including x-rays) will follow next week.
"This cancellation is nothing to do with the promoter. They did everything 100% correct (including payments and booking flights). This is strictly about my medical condition. We were forced to cancel one show last Sunday in Germany (Hexentanz festival) as well because of the same issue.
"We really hope to get another chance to perform in Turkey soon and I am very sorry about this unexpected cancellation."

Finnish melodic death metal act Iliac Thorns will be releasing a new album via Inverse Records later this month. The band comments:
"The band was formed in the summer of 2010 by Samu, Ilkka & Antti after they found a mutual ambition in music. Finding a bass player was more of a challenge and first year IT remained as a trio until Jere was found behind some bush in the summer of 2011.
"Even thou IT plays melodic metal of death, their music isn't meant to sound like this faceless mainstream genre, what melodeath has unfortunately become over the years. In guitar riffs you can hear the sound of mid 90's melodeath mixed to their distinctive 'blackish' expression. Also the production, song writing and vocal performances has taken reflections of raw and extreme black metal, as this side is also important to some IT members.
"Iliac Thorns self-released EP named Prevailing Shapes of Hell in winter 2012 and it received good feedback from media and the listeners and this lead to a decision to record a debut full-length album in co-operation with Inverse Records. Album, simply named IT, contains 8 songs of blackened melodeath which attacks the core of listeners like a ton of black sludge. The release date will be May 20th in Finland and June 26th in the rest of the world."
The track listing is as follows:
1. Decimate Prayer
2. Brutal Seizure
3. Euphoria Lost

U.K. "Caveman Battle Doom" act Conan, featuring ex-Black Magician bassist/vocalist John McNulty, have signed on with Napalm Records for the band's sophomore full length release, the followup to the 2012 debut "Monnos." No time frame was announced for the new LP.
Napalm Records commented: "Conan's unique style of Doom/Drone/Stoner Metal won over audiences at the Roadburn Festival 2012 consequently resulting in the release of the live album 'Mount Wrath: Live at Roadburn 2012'. Past shows with label mates AHAB and an invitation to play Desertfest London 2013 have further established CONAN as the DOOM Powerhouse to watch out for! Welcome to the Napalm Family!"
The band commented: "We are very happy to associated with a label such as Napalm Records / Spinning Goblin and are looking forward to seeing how the new record comes out. We turned down two other record deals, both from labels that we could have quite justifiably agreed terms with, but for several reasons we wanted to move on with Napalm once they showed interest.
"We have enjoyed excellent relationships with every label we have worked with and it would have taken something extremely special to convince us to move away from Burning World Records, with whom we have enjoyed a particularly happy period. Thanks to JP, Jurgen and Desiree for helping us into this position and supporting us so far. Everything that comes our way is a huge bonus, for we give everything and expect nothing. To be considered worthy of a label such as Napalm Records is a pretty big thing for us so we'll give it our best shot." More...

Kaotoxin Records will release a new single from French death metallers Darkall Slaves on June 3rd (June 4th in the UK). "Abysses of Seclusion," from the revamped, two-vocalist band featuring past and present members of Unsu, Amputated Repugnance and Visceral Carnage - began as a pre-production demo (Tsun Tsun Productions) that Kaotoxin decided to release as a single featuring two tracks (plus an "intro") performed in a style that is distinctly American.
With only a self-released EP under its belt (2008) in eight years of existence mostly spent going through a long list of line-up changes, Darkall Slaves has nevertheless managed to be noticed and get invited to play such famous death metal festivals as Germany's Death Feast, Belgium's Mass Deathstruction, Holland's Neurotic Deathfest (official after-party) and Houten Deathfest. The band was founded in 2008 by singer Abraxas and Guitarist Baphomet, and released a digital demo (Lucifer/Restoration) in 2010. After finally recruiting a full set of five members in the fall of 2011, the band played some concerts in Norway supporting bands such as Pagan Altar (UK), as well as performing at the Inferno Festival 2012.
In June 2012, they self-released their first EP titled Iao Sabao, with a concept mainly centered on the ancient Greek Bornless Ritual and the alchemical picture series Splendor Solis; shortly after, they signed a contract with Cruz del Sur Music.
Cruz Del Sur Music is giving vinyl treatment to the debut full-length from acclaimed Swedish doomsters Void Moon. In October 2010 four of these tracks were released as the "Through the Gateway" 7" EP on the German label Metalbound Records.
Following the release Erika Wallberg joined the band as lead guitarist. In April 2011, a second demo was released, entitled "The Mourning Son." Brazilian thrash metal legends Sepultura have announced a campaign on Kickstarter to fund a band documentary. The film, which has been in a work in progress for the past few years, is said to chronicle the highs and lows of the band's entire nearly thirty year history, including tours, economic problems and personal conflicts. An excerpt from the Kickstarter page reads as follows:
"Finally: The long awaited documentary about Sepultua’s incredible journey from Brazil to the world. Filmmaker Otavio Juliano has been following Sepultura for the better part of 2010-2013, a time of tension and triumph for the band, as they toured and recorded their album Kairos. Nothing has been off-limits. This amazing story will go through Sepultura’s history, myths, conflicts, personnel changes and struggles with the Internet economy in the early 2000s as well interviews and rare footage. This documentary is certain to bring fans closer to the band they love.
"About 50% of the film has been shot so far. We have witnessed this historic band experiencing wrenching transformations and unprecedented growth. We opened Sepultura's vault and dig into the best rare and unseen footage of the last 30 years. We will see them at their most vulnerable and human, and also as idols of the heavy metal genre. Those elements make the overall film an uncommonly powerful statement."
