For more than two decades Sick Of It All has been championing the New York hardcore scene, sticking on track to release a new full-length album every few years. After four years of touring the band recently set loose "Based On A True Story," their latest fist-pumping, mosh-inducing foray into hardcore. Commenting on the new album, vocalist Lou Koller stated: "This one is definitely a combination of all the stuff we’ve done in the past. I think we’ve matured enough that it’s more focused and our writing is way better. We’ve written more memorable songs..."
Lou spoke with me about the lyrics on the new album, the recording of the music video for "Death or Jail," their recent tour dates with unlikely allies AFI, and his love of Manowar. These topics and more can be found in the transcription of the interview below. More...
King Diamond has checked in with the following thoughts about the recent departure of famous metal musician Ronnie James Dio:
"It’s with a heavy heart that I pay my respects to Ronnie James Dio. What an amazing singer and entertainer. Throughout my career, he has always been in my top 10 list of vocalists. The mystery and emotion in his vocal style always lured me in for more. Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure to meet him in person, but fortunately I did have the extreme pleasure of experiencing his uncanny frontmanship in concert so many times I can’t even count it.
"I saw him with ELF, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and almost had one of my wishes fulfilled when Heaven and Hell asked King Diamond to go on tour with them in the USA last year. Unfortunately my back problems prevented that dream from coming true. I always had the highest respect for him and he will forever have his music playing in my home. My deepest sympathy goes out to Ronnie’s family. I WISH YOU A SAFE JOURNEY TO THE OTHER SIDE."
Los Angeles act Lizzy Borden has checked in with the following remembrance of Ronnie James Dio, who passed away due to stomach cancer:
"So sorry to hear about Ronnie James Dio…We played some festivals with Dio over the years and at everyone my band and I would always be in the audience after our show watching the master at work, and he was always perfect… One of my great memories of Ronnie was the first night we ever got played on the radio; it was at a Dio show. He was playing 2 shows in one night and we were out in the parking lot waiting for the 2nd show to start along with a few thousand others, and then bam! Our song came blasting on the radio out of every car in the lot. It was a night I will never forget and the Dio show that followed was magical!
"I’ve seen Ronnie perform many times and ‘em grateful that I had the opportunity to be on the side of the stage at the last Heaven and hell show in CA. Ronnie’s voice was so loud, so powerful and pitch perfect, it was truly an amazing thing to witness. We recorded our version of 'long live rock and roll' way back on our first ep and we still close our show with it most nights… There will never be another like him; Ronnie was a master of his trade, a true original and every time I flash those horns, (which is a lot) I will be thinking of the Man on the silver mountain, Ronnie James Dio."
Guitarist John Perez of Texas metal act Solitude Aeturnus has issued the following statement regarding Ronnie James Dio's recent death:
"Like most everyone I know, I am in a great state of sadness. Ronnie James Dio was the ultimate Heavy Metal figure. Why? Because he conducted himself the way every one of us should; treating fans and friends with respect above and beyond the call of the duty (b.t.c.o.d) and giving his best to us at all times. Oh, and lets not forget that he was the best! A true professional and a model human being. Make no mistake, the prime influence and building block in Solitude Aeturnus was/is and always will be Dio era Black Sabbath. Thank you Ronnie and family for all that you’ve given to us. We are grateful and strive to live by your example."
Polish death metal act Deivos has issued the following announcement about inking a three record deal with Unique Leader Records:
"We are proud to announce that our cooperation with Unique Leader will continue for the next three albums! Needless to say, that we are really happy about it! Hopefully, our ideas and visions of extreme death metal will spread in the music underground thanks to the dedication of the band and the very respected label - Unique Leader Records. So, the first half of 2011 will be the time of the yet untitled new Deivos album! If you enjoyed Gospel of Maggots, then the upcoming CD will make you bleed even more!"

Each week in "Unearthing the Metal Underground," we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. This week I am offering a brief glimpse of the dynamic Taiwan metal scene.
In the past few years, the metal scene in Taiwan has exploded and now boasts an active roster of more than 50 bands. This is a significant number for the relatively small island nation of 23 million that lies less than 200 kilometers off the east coast of China—with geographical, political, and historical factors playing a key role in Taiwan’s metallic output. The repressive Chinese government currently has well over 1,000 ICBMs aimed at Taiwan, and has maintained that it will use military force if necessary to bring Taiwan back under its control. Taiwan has been governed separately from China since the KMT was defeated by the Communists in 1949 following a four-year civil war, after which the KMT leadership and soldiers fled across the Taiwan Strait. Since then, Taiwan has held de-facto independence that is only officially recognized by an ever dwindling number of African, Central and South American, Caribbean, and South Pacific states. The perpetually tense political standoff with its impossibly imposing neighbor to the west, combined with an ongoing struggle for inclusion in international organizations and increased diplomatic recognition, has made Taiwan the ideal breeding ground for the world’s angriest, loudest, and fastest form of musical expression.

Like so many others in the hard rock and heavy metal community, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake and others have posted messages online paying their respects to heavy metal icon Ronnie James Dio, who sadly passed away yesterday morning in Los Angeles from stomach cancer. The tributes read as follows:
Iron Maiden: "It is with huge sadness we hear that Ronnie has lost his battle against stomach cancer, and our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Wendy and family at this terrible time. From his earlier years in Elf, Black Sabbath and Dio, right through to his most recent days fronting Heaven and Hell, Ronnie, time and again, proved his genius as a frontman, always giving his all to his fans and his music. Ronnie was not only an incredibly gifted singer but also a wonderfully warm, intelligent and generous person and this shone through both on and off stage leaving a positive mark on everyone he came into contact with. A longstanding friend of Maiden, we played many shows together over the years and we will all miss him greatly. The world has lost an irreplaceable talent and, first and foremost, one of the finest human beings you could ever wish to meet."
Whitesnake's David Coverdale: "So very sad to hear of Ronnie's passing... My thoughts, prayers and condolence to his family and friends." More...
On Sunday morning, May 16th at 2:20 AM ET, two of our staff reported that Ronnie James Dio had passed away. These reports turned out to be premature and at the time false, said to be a “viral hoax” by many. Many readers expressed outrage and disappointment that we would post such unfounded news, and I am here to offer my apologies for the unfounded reports and make clear our official stance on such tricky situations.
As I've stated before, it's a narrow line to walk between reporting the news in a timely manner and assuring its credibility when it comes to certain situations such as this one. But in a case such as the death of an icon and hero to many, we should have erred on the side of caution. On the other hand, I am not opposed to making mention of rumors or unconfirmed reports in the effort to get you news first, as long as those reports are explicitly identified as such. Unfortunately, our late-night reports of Dio's death were posted as unqualified truths, despite being based on unnamed sources, many or few.
Unfortunately, it was not just a viral hoax, but appears to be more of a premature leak as to the graveness of Dio's condition. This fact, that we posted a correction, or the fact that Ronnie James Dio died later this same morning has no impact on the correctness or wrongness of our initial reports, however.
Within minutes of the posting, Metalunderground.com was flooded with visitors and became unstable, making it difficult to properly update the articles or post follow-ups. When I got word that Dio's death had been confirmed, Dio's official web site itself was down due to traffic. Once I confirmed the information, it took me nearly an hour to get the article posted through the server instability and even longer to update the original articles with that information, leading people to then complain that he had passed away and we were saying he hadn't. So despite the initial mistake, we were faced with challenges throughout the day in getting the correct information out to the public even once it was confirmed.
Metalunderground.com has grown tremendously in the past few years and I realize many people trust us to provide accurate and timely news and reporting on the metal scene. I apologize to those of you who feel that your trust was violated by our unconfirmed story of such incredible weight and importance, and I assure you that we are taking steps so that what happened today will be less likely to happen in the future. I cannot claim it will never happen, as there are many factors that play into such a mistake, but we have all learned from today's experience and will do our best to not repeat it.
I am establishing a more formal process for posting breaking and/or sensitive news so that we can convey our message in a more clear and accurate manner in the future. I have never been one for sensationalizing news in the first place, and certainly do not wish to mislead our readers in any way, as building a credible news site has been a priority of mine from day one.
I hope you'll consider our position and this apology in your decision to continue relying on Metalunderground.com for the latest metal news and commentary.
While I feel the sad news of Dio's passing totally eclipses these issues of yesterday, I wanted to address them nonetheless to let our readers know that we take our responsibilities here very seriously and have not simply swept the mistakes under the carpet and ignored those who expressed concern or anger over our initial premature reports.
R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio.

I first met him at Foundations forum, about two to three weeks before our tour with them during the Dehumanizer tour, for about ten minutes while he waited outside for his cab. I introduced myself, said it was an all time honor to meet and tour with him and said see you soon. Fast forward to the first day of the tour, and he sees me and says "How are you doing Gary?". I would not have been offended if he never knew my name the whole tour, but he remembered it from a ten minute chat around three weeks earlier. We had many golden moments hanging out with him, while he allowed me to relentlessly badger him for stories about Ritchie Blackmore and the time spent singing for my favorite band, Rainbow. R.I.P., your impact on me won't ever be forgotten." More...
