Finnish melodic death metal superstars Children of Bodom are on the verge of releasing an eighth full-length album via Nuclear Blast. "Halo of Blood" is due out June 11th, and in anticipation of the release front man Alexi Laiho was recently in the U.S. to talk up the album and the band's pending appearance on the Rockstar Mayhem Festival.
"Halo of Blood" is being touted as a return to form, echoing the atmosphere of early albums such as "Follow the Reaper" and "Hatebreeder," which are widely regarded as some of the band's best material.
I got the chance to ask Alexi himself about how the album stacks up to previous releases and how the band will continue its infamous trend of covering non-metal tracks. See what he had to say in the interview below. More...
Lord Dying recently completed work on new album "Summon the Faithless," which is set for release July 9th via Relapse Records.
The album will be available in CD, LP and digital formats. The album is available for pre-order here, and a teaser trailer can be found at this location. The following press release was also issued about the band:
"Lord Dying comes from Portland, Oregon: a place over abundant with purveyors of the heavy riff. A region where the inhabitants are plagued with nerve and joint damage due to lack of sunlight. In a time where everyone is trying to out-sludge or out-doom each other Lord Dying gives something less than a fuck. They are a metal band with members of Black Elk , Portals, Le Force, and Damn Your Eyes, who in their short, one year's time as a band have shared the stage with Down, Unsane, Yob, Valient Thorr, Black Cobra and many others.
"After releasing a self-titled EP in 7" form, the dudes kicked it up a notch, heading out on national tours with Witch Mountain followed by a long trek with label-mates Red Fang and Black Tusk. Fast forward to 2013 and LORD DYING are poised to be the new heavyweight champions of metal. Smashing the riffs of High On Fire into the groove of Kylesa, Lord Dying have delivered one of the most impressive metal debuts in a long, long time. A young band that has matured well beyond their years into a fully developed titanic heavy metal machine, Lord Dying's new album is poised to be one of the best debuts of 2013. Look for a summer tour to be announced shortly." More...

Libria has unleashed a lyric video for the song “Equilibrium,” taken from the band's debut album "Immortal Daughter Of Aesthetics" due out today via WormHoleDeath. Check out the lyric video below.
WormHoleDeath Records has checked in with the following announcement about inking a deal with Elegy of Madness:
"We are extremely honored to announce the signing from Italian symphonic metal band Elegy of Madness. Wormholedeath will release their album titled 'Brave Dreams' worldwide through Aural Music Group/Wormholedeath Japan. The album is being produced, recorded and mixed at Realsound Studio (Italy) right now with producer Wahoomi Corvi (Crysalys , The Way Of Purity). The release date will be announced soon both for Europe and Japan."
The band also states: "We are very happy to announce that Elegy of Madness signed a deal with WormHoleDeath, a label that works with passion and seriousness. They supported us in our work giving important advices and different point of views. We are very satisfied to say that our new full lenght ‘Brave Dreams’ will be soon out worldwide.”
WormHoleDeath's A&R “Worm” stated: “I have known Elegy Of Madness for being one of the most hard working bands in Italy, and when Wahoomi of Realsound introduced the guys to me I knew already that I was going to deal with such a professional band. With their debut full length album released with another company EOM have been recognised in Italy as one of the most promising Symphonic Metal bands in the country. I believe that with such great experience we already have with bands like Ravenscry, Crysalys, Azylya we are the right label for them! It’s time to make Elegy Of Madness an international act and get attention from other important countries. Support this band, they have brave dreams that we all should help to be turned into reality.”
Norway's Shining releases the new album "One One One" this coming June 4th in Europe (excluding Norway) and June 7th in Germany and Austria. The new black/jazz album can now be pre-ordered right here. “One One One” will be available as a digipack containing a 20 page booklet filled with lyrics and artwork designed by designer duo Trine+Kim (Enslaved, Solefald, Mayhem, Drakthrone).
Shining front man and saxophone superman, Jørgen Munkeby, comments on the process and thoughts behind the cover art:
"We wanted to continue the visual aesthetics we developed with Blackjazz and Live Blackjazz, but at the same time give it a fresh twist. It felt natural to continue our collaboration with Trine + Kim Design Studio, who helped develop the visual aesthetics for Blackjazz back in 2009.
"I've also been a long time fan of brave and uncompromising choices, both in music and in design, and felt that this time we would like to make a stripped down artwork that would also stand out from the rest. Blackjazz was black, Live Blackjazz was white, and we wanted to find another strong color to embody this new album. Seeing how the color red looked great screen, but didn't have the same punch and glow when printed on paper, we decided to base our new artwork on the super aggressive fluorescent Pantone color PMS 804. I chose this color because I felt it was the most aggressive and energetic color I could find. It also makes for a very strong contrast to the hard edges of our black logo and vector graphics. All in all I think the mix of our stripped down futuristic graphics and the PMS 804 color gives this release a contemporary vibe that echoes modern design and fashion. More...
Ukrainian black metal act Balfor previously announced a line up change that sees virtually the whole band departing, with only front man and guitarist Thorgeir remaining. Commenting on the reason for such a drastic change, Thorgeir said:
"We parted ways for a variety of reasons and we hadn't actually worked together for a very long time. This decision was not an easy one, but it was a necessary one that took into account the needs and interests of all the band members, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the guys for all this time we worked together, it was a great experience! But sometimes a change is necessary if you want to move forward."
With work having begun on the sophomore full-length album, Balfor's new line up, which consists of Thorgeir on vocals and guitars, Warider on guitars and backing vocals, Athamas on bass and vocals and Khaoth on drums, marks a new stage in the band's development, one that Thorgeir is very positive about.
"We have been rehearsing together since the beginning of the year, and I am now very sure that the new line up works just as well, if not better, than the previous incarnation of Balfor, because new blood has brought a fresh perspective to the band's music and a lot of enthusiasm. Warider, the new guitarist, is quite young, but hugely promising, whilst Khaoth has honed his considerable drumming skills with Dark Metallers Khors. Athamas brings with him not only the experience he has gained with bands like Deferum Sacrum and Raventale, but he is also a great vocalist, which is able to give an additional perspective to the Balfor sound." Pitchfork.com has premiered “Heathen Child” from Demon Lung’s forthcoming full-length debut. It’s the second song released from "The Hundredth Name," set for release via Candlelight Records on June 4th. Check out the track right here.
The conceptual album was produced by Billy Anderson (Neurosis, The Melvins, Sleep) and features artwork by English illustrator Tom Bates (Vision of Disorder, Amorphis). Discussing the song, drummer Jeremy Brenton reveals, “‘Heathen Child’ is the fifth track on the record and is definitely one of our favorites to play live. We got the gnarliest guitar tone at the end of that song. It’s the part of the story where our hero, the warlock, kills an unbaptized male child in order to make a flying potion from his fat. Don’t try this at home, especially without a sharp knife.”

The Jeff Hanneman Memorial Celebration will take place on Thursday, May 23rd at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles from 3:30 - 7:30PM. Hanneman passed away on May 2nd at the age of 49.
The Memorial Celebration will be free and open to the public on a first-come, first-in basis (subject to venue capacity). All ages are welcome, and paid parking will be available around the venue.
Jeff Hanneman helped shape Slayer's uncompromising thrash metal sound as well as an entire genre of music. His riffs of fury and punk-rock attitude were heard in the songs he wrote, including Slayer classics "Angel of Death," "Raining Blood," "South of Heaven" and "War Ensemble."
Hanneman co-founded Slayer with fellow-guitarist Kerry King, bassist Tom Araya and drummer Dave Lombardo in Huntington Park, CA in 1981. For more than 30 years, Hanneman was the band member who stayed out of the spotlight, rarely did interviews, amassed an impressive collection of World War II memorabilia, was with his wife Kathy for nearly three decades, shut off his phone and went incommunicado when he was home from tour, did not want to be on the road too late into any December as Christmas was his favorite holiday, and, from the time he was about 12 years old, woke up every single day with one thing on his mind: playing the guitar.
It was once suggested to Slayer that if the band would write "just one mainstream song that could get on the radio," the group would likely sell millions of records and change the commercial course of its career. Jeff was the first to draw a line of integrity in the sand, replying, "We're going to make a Slayer record. If you can get it on the radio, fine, if not, then fuck it."
Last year several members of Sabaton set out on their own to form a new band, with Rikard Sundén (guitars), Oskar Montelius (guitars), Daniel Mullback (drums), and Daniel Mÿhr (keyboards) joining vocalist Nils Patrik Johansson (Astral Doors) and bassist Stefan "Pizza" Eriksson (Volturyon) to create Civil War.
The band would go on to be nominated as one of the best newcomers of 2012 in our annual year-end awards. Now Civil War's debut full-length album is almost upon us, as "The Killer Angels" will drop on June 11th, 2013.
In anticipation of the release, Metalunderground.com is pleased to bring you an exclusive song premiere off the album. Experience the full throttle power metal glory of "First To Fight" in the player below. The band also comments on the track:
"First to Fight is about an elite force, that according to some, even surpasses the U.S. Navy Seals when it comes to the tough recruitment requirements. 'GROM,' - Grupa Reagowania Operacyjno-Manewrowego (Operational Maneuver Response Group), is a 350 man strong elite force that was formed on June 13th, 1990 to protect Polish citizens where the situation demands it across the globe."

"There is still something going on in my inner ear, but the doctor's opinion is that it should recover and I am able to fly again. So Ensiferum will be back on road this weekend, starting with the Rock Hard Festival (Gelsenkirchen, Germany). See you soon!"

Legendary Chicago metal band Trouble announced that the long awaited return album will be entitled "The Distortion Field." The album is scheduled for release on July 16th (North America) and July 26th (Europe) via FRW Records. The album marks the first new album from the band since the 2007 LP "Simple Mind Condition."
"The Distortion Field" will also make history for the band as they welcome new lead vocalist, Kyle Thomas of Exorder and Floodgate fame.
Commenting on new vocalist is founder and guitarist Rick Wartell: "Kyle is one of the most impressive singers I've ever heard, and by far the most extraordinary singer I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He's got incredible range, incredible power, and an incredible knowledge of Trouble, as he's been a fan for 20-something years. We've known him forever, and he innately understands what Trouble is about. He's like the perfect guy to come in and do this job. It's awesome."
Veteran music Producer Bill Metoyer is once again lending his expertise, having previously worked with the band on "The Skull" and 'Trouble," both Metal Blade releases. More...
Brazilian traditional metal act Hellish War unveiled the cover artwork for the band's upcoming third LP "Keep It Hellish." The album marks the band's first for new label Pure Steel Records as well as new vocalist Bil Martins (DarkWitch/Ex-Heavenly Kingdom), who replaced Roger Hammer last year. The album drops June 10th in Brazil and June 28th in Europe.
"Keep It Hellish" was produced by Ricardo Piccoli at PiccoliStudio in Biella, Italy and will contain the tracks "Keep It Hellish", "The Challenge", "Reflects On The Blade", "Fire And Killing", "Scars (Underneath Your Skin)", "Masters Of Wreckage", "Phanton Ship", "The Quest", "Darkness Ride" and "Battle At Sea".
The artwork (shown below) was once again painted by Eduardo Burato, who created the band's previous two studio albums, "Defender Of Metal" (2001) and "Heroes Of Tomorrow" (2008).
Drummer Daniel Person commented on the album and the cover: "'Keep It Hellish' is Hellish War's most heavy, fast and best finished album. The band's identity is intact and this is a heavy metal album from the begining to the end, full of strong choruses - something I really miss on the brazilian heavy metal nowadays - and, of course, this is the premier of Bill Martins which is, in my opinion, one of the five best metal vocalists from Brazil. The cool thing about the album cover is that it represents all these elements when connecting to the band's history - we have the return of Guillis, the same warrior that appears on the cover of our first album, that was also painted by Eduardo Burato."
