We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories from metal shows. This week Jeff of Hull goes all the way back to his teens to tell a story from a Meshuggah and Slayer show:
Back in my mid-teens I was lucky enough, or unlucky enough, depending on how you look at it to live in the Philly area. In the decrepit streets of this city you will find ye ole' Electric Factory. It just so happened that on one particular day Meshuggah was opening up for Slayer so all around a fucking TITs show. The show began with the standard philly practice of heavy drinking and passing out on nitris in the parking lot. One van had about 12 tanks in it but that's another story. After chugging a handful of beers and numerous blabbering conversations in a super low toned nitris voice I walked into the venue.
Meshuggah eventually went on. It was awesome! But that is not where the story is... While waiting for Slayer to go on I found myself way in the back of the club because, well, that's where the beers are. I don't know about you but if you are going to see Slayer you need to get as close as humanly possible and go bat-shit crazy. So how does one get through a packed house of muscle bound freaks, biker dudes, and general Philly shit-heads, especially all of whom are just waiting for the moment when Slayer hits the stage. Here's how, crowd mother fucking surfing.
I realize this is normally an act done properly while a band is actually playing or if you are into getting touched on every inch of your body by strangers, mostly dude strangers. I was not into any of that but Slayer I was. So FUCK IT. I patted the guy in front of me on the shoulder. He turned his head, I pointed up with as sincere a face as I could make. Without hesitation his hands folded below his waist, I jump on and here goes my god damn ride. Most people would turn around and show signs of absolute confusion. Again, one van, 12 tanks. There were a few moments I felt violated but I guess that's the price you pay. I was almost dropped about 8 times due to unsuspecting dudes high as fuck or tripping on that weeks colored gel tap. Luckily for me I am a lanky twig of a man (that's what she said) so I was easily caught by some random person who some how cared about someone besides themselves, weird, doesn't fit in at a Slayer show I know. But in the end I MADE IT! Front row! Right in the face of it all. Within landing there no more than 30 seconds went by and BOOM! Slayer hits the stage, I hit the closest person I see and thus the mosh-pit is born.
Hull has been putting the finishing touches on their upcoming new album since tearing it up at SXSW as part of a tour with Batillus. Check out their tour diary here. The band's sophomore full-length will be co-produced by Brett Romnes (who played drums on the "Viking Funeral" EP) and mixed by Billy Anderson (Sleep, High On Fire, Neurosis, EHG, Melvins et al). Black metal cultivators Wolves in the Throne Room are currently fully immersed in the process of harvesting their next full-length album.
The new album, though still untitled, will be the third Wolves in the Throne Room full-length for Southern Lord Recordings. Aaron and Nathan Weaver, the founding and only full-time members of the band, will collaborate once again with producer/mystic Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn O))), Boris) who produced the band's "Two Hunters" and "Black Cascade" albums.
This week Aaron Weaver supplied some insight on the creation of the new album by saying, "I got into a daily rhythm of greeting the weak winter sun in the morning, working outside in the rain until midday, then retiring to our studio to work on the music late into the night. I did this nearly every day for two months. Quite a monastic lifestyle actually. I didn't see many people. We were totally lost inside the record. Once the record was conceived from beginning to end, we met with Randall and started to slowly build the tracks at his studio in Seattle. I think that this album will be the best thing that Wolves in the Throne Room has created. We've never been able to devote this much time to writing and recording. It feels like this will be the culmination of everything we've done up to this point."
In addition to the Weaver brothers, the album will also feature vocal contributions from Jessika Kenny, who contributed to the "Two Hunters" album.
More information on the album will be brought forth in the coming weeks, as the band completes the album and prepare for a busy year of Wolves in the Throne Room actions worldwide.
Harpoon will enter Bricktop Recording this coming June to record the band's sophomore record "Deception Among Birds." Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos, Millions, Black September) will once again be handling the engineering duties after recording the band's first first full-length "Double Gnarly / Triple Suicide" (Released on Interloper). A press release from the band also stated:
"It's 2011 and Harpoon still refuse to sell out and get some fallable human to compliment their trusty drum machine. Their personnel is minimal... the riffs are maximum.
"The guitar performance within Harpoon is delivered with a fluidity not often heard from bands associated with the terms 'grind' or 'powerviolence.' Make no mistake - there's nothing 'soft' about this pile driving onslaught - you can simply sense the ease of execution in Dean Costello's playing.
"He isn't new to this. In addition to Costello, Harpoon singer Toney Vast-Binder has been reunited with bass player D.J. Barraca (Lair of the Minotaur). There's enough metal pedigree here to pique the interest of even the most skeptical metal maven (7000 Dying Rats, Lair Of The Minotaur, Gun Kata, and on and on). 'Deception Among Birds' veers slightly from the premise of the first full-length ('Double Gnarly / Triple Suicide' released on Interloper) in that it takes some time to stop and smell the corpses. There are exercises in dronery that re-oxygenate the listener just enough to spear them with another sharpened assault from the part-man, part-machine, all-shredding Harpoon."
"Deception Among Birds" is slated for release through Seventh Rule in September on analog and digital formats. Tour dates will be announced soon, including a proper set of West Coast shows leading up to the release. A demo version of the forthcoming album track "To The Tall Trees" has been posted online and can be heard in the player below.
Brazil’s heavy metal act Shadowside recently revealed the cover art for the band’s upcoming studio album "Inner Monster Out." The album will be available for digital download next month on SHP Records.
Shadowside will also film a music video for the first single “Angel with Horns” later this month in Campinas, Brazil with director Thiago Pinheiro of Studio Kaiowas. “The song is about someone trying to escape their own boring reality by putting their hopes in one disturbing and mysterious person that's pure evil, though innocent as an angel at the same time,” said vocalist Dani Nolden.
"Inner Monster Out" was produced, mixed, and mastered at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden by Fredrik Nordström (Arch Enemy, At The Gates, Bring Me The Horizon, In Flames), and features guest vocals from tBjörn "Speed" Strid (Soilwork), Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquility), and Niklas Isfeldt (Dream Evil). The track listing is as follows:

"This video is a raw and emotional tribute to Avenged Sevenfold's late drummer Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan and celebrates the long-time friendship the band members have shared since forming A7X in Huntington Beach, CA, in 1999. The video was directed by Wayne Isham, who has directed videos for such artists as Metallica, Mötley Crüe, Megadeth, and Def Leppard, among many others. The heartfelt quality of the video is in keeping with the emotional resonance of the song, a very personal goodbye to Sullivan that appears on the band's album Nightmare."

"We've always had a very strong support on the Iberian peninsula and we're of course extremely happy about that. Over the years we've often been over there as part of a support act, but we felt we owed our fans in Spain & Portugal some proper headline shows for a change. We've been trying to make this happen for ages, but it's taken time. So now we're definitely coming, make you turn up and show your support! I'm sure we'll have some amazing shows happening! Legion of the Damned recently split with guitarist Richard Ebisch, and the band has now announced Twan van Geel as his replacement. "After guitarist Richard Ebisch quite the band around 3 weeks ago we have not been sitting still" says singer Maurice Swinkels, "The day after Richard's departure I already had in mind to call guitarist Twan van Geel, I've known him for more than 10 years already and I knew he would be the perfect replacement."
"I called Twan that evening to tell him the situation in Legion of the damned and asked him if he would be intrested in a meeting with Harold, Erik and me, it didn't really took long before he called me back and said he would be looking forward to it" explains Maurice.
Twan commented: "It was really a surprise when Maurice called me. We have known eachother for some years but he has never called me on the phone before, so I knew that whatever he was about to tell me had a special meaning, I knew that he would not call me about the weather of course (laughs). Asking me to be their new guitar player struck me as a bomb, Legion of the damned has become a band that no one can deny or go around it of course. Therefore it didn't really took me a long time before I decided to take the shot and meet the rest of the gang." More...

Irish extreme metal outfit Primordial has entered the album charts in a number of European countries with their latest studio album, "Redemption At The Puritan's Hand." Speaking on the success, frontman AA Nemtheanga stated:
"What goes around comes around my friends, you can't keep a good band down, whatever the cliche might be! The industry may have changed vastly even since we released To the nameless dead but for a band like Primordial that resolutely goes against the grain without compromise charting at #31 is still a remarkable achievement so thanks to everyone who has supported the band through thick and thin over the last 20 years and to Metal Blade for their part in our gradual ascent since the release of The gathering wilderness. Coming from such an underdog nation as Ireland this is also a fantastic moment, we have had to work several times as hard as others to get to this point but no harm, it has given us character and the willpower to keep going regardless of what's thrown at us. So cheers and have a drink on us. See you down the front."
The chart positions are as follows:
Finland (Rumba charts / only record store sales): #4
