Hailing from Colorado, Nexhymn is a female-fronted death metal band born from the ashes of Throcult in 2010. The name itself is derived from a combination of the Latin word Nex (defined as death, violent nature, and slaughter) and the word Hymn (a simple song of praise).
Self-released by the band on March 27th of this year, Nexhymn's debut EP "Black Horizon" was recorded at Firestorm studios and mixed and mastered at Flatline Audio. Nexhymn is currently streaming two of its songs, the title track from the EP and "Decaying Monument," over at ReverbNation, or you may stream them below in the player. As a final teaser before the release of the band's sixth album, Demon Hunter is now premiering "Wake," taken from the forthcoming "True Defiance," available in stores and online tomorrow, April 10th, on Solid State Records.
"'Wake' is another song that explores all the best elements of the band," explains mastermind Ryan Clark. "It's very riff heavy, vocally melodic, extremely aggressive, grooving, and features some of the best drumming on the record. This song takes what some might consider the standard Demon Hunter vocal structure and flips it- the verses are melodic singing, and the screaming takes place in the chorus. I think those tweaks in the structure make it a unique DH song."
"Lyrically, it's about a person's fear of the unknown... or the coming to terms with one's mortality and spiritual life... digging deeper that a daily surface existence or 'waking' out of the ritualistic/mundane day-to-day."
Check out the song "Wake" by heading over to this location. The new album's track listing is as follows:
2. God Forsaken
3. My Destiny
5. Tomorrow Never Comes
6. Someone To Hate
7. This I Know
8. Means To An End
9. We Don’t Care
11. Dead Flowers

Forbidden founding member / guitarist / songwriter Craig Locicero has issued the following update about working on a new album and the status of his other projects:
“Recently I've been getting bombarded with questions as to what exactly I am doing musically because I have so many updates about my different projects. Forbidden, SpiralArms, Demonica, and now Manmade God have all been thrown out there. So please let me explain a little bit.
“At the end of 2011, I made a commitment to myself: 2012 will be the year I have the most musical gratification and fun I will ever have had in my life. So far my mission is working out pretty well.
“Forbidden. We are writing a record presently and what we have so far is smoking-shit-hot-thrash-attack! Sasha Horn has been a lightning rod for our original energy since he's joined up. The only issue we have is the amount of time we get to spend together with Steve Smyth and Sasha both living elsewhere. But we have our 'Four Dates of the Apocalypse' coming up here in April and we finish that up in Santiago, Chile and Sao Paulo, Brazil! That will be awesome. While we get together to practice, we also work on new songs. Then, it’s Wacken in August and recording the new record before the end of the year for a 2013 release. I sure hope there is a 2013! Every week in Unearthing the Metal Underground, we take a look at three quality bands that haven't gotten as much exposure yet as they should. Last week, we exposed three metal bands from Pakistan and we continue in something of a similar vein this week, turning our attention to another Islamic country, though this time in North Africa, namely Morocco. Morocco had something of a controversial encounter with heavy metal music, when in 2003 more than a dozen heavy metal fans were jailed in the city of Casablanca for "acts capable of undermining the faith of a Muslim" and "possessing objects which infringe morals." The Moroccan courts felt that the black t-shirts adorning heavy metal logos worn by these young men, all of whom played in metal bands themselves, were Satanic. However, after global outcry from musicians and human rights activists, they were released and today, Morocco sees more bands performing hard rock and heavy metal music. This week we will be looking at three such groups.
Formed in early 2006, Analgesia created a blend of groove metal with classical elements, fusing black metal vocals with a more operatic female counterpart. They released their first record, "Return to the Self" the same year and gained quite a following amongst metal fans in Morocco. They have performed at some of the biggest festivals in the country including L’boulevard and have since released two more albums, "Era of the Storytellers" and "Beyond Illusion."

Veteran Swedish death metal act Hypocrisy is currently prepping new material for its 13th studio album, which is scheduled for release next year on Nuclear Blast Records. The band has issued the following update to fill fans in on the process:
“We're now focusing on writing new songs for the next album. We've already some new material and it sounds killer! The plan is to record the new album in the autumn this year and release it in the first half of 2013. So far everything is working out as planned and we're really excited to bring out the new release.
“Between the writing process we're also doing some festival shows and we hope to see you all there! We'll keep you updated what’s going on with the band!”
Hypocrisy released its last full-length, "A Taste of Extreme Divinity," in 2009 on Nuclear Blast Records. Stay tuned to the official Hypocrisy Facebook page here for more information.
Metalunderground.com is premiering the one-man cover for the Fear Factory song "Flashpoint," recorded by deathrash/groove outfit Common Dead. The track originally hails from the 1995 album "Demanufacture." All instrumentation and mixing for the cover was the solo effort of Common Dead's founder, Andrew Laurenson, including the recreation of sound bytes meant to mirror samples in the original. Check out the cover below.
Comments Laurenson: "This was a favorite song of mine that tends to get overlooked by some. It starts heavy, reaches up for melody, then crashes down heavy again. A short and sweet punch to the face that also hadn't been covered to death. This raw mix was made around sessions for the 'Diatribe' album as an homage to the masters of futurist metal."
Common Dead released its flagship effort "Diatribe" (reviewed here) in early 2012 after relocating to Montreal, Canada from the United States. The effort received warm reviews from press, including 3/5 from Metal Underground and 4/5 from Brutalism. Following the release, plans were announced to expand the official roster of Common Dead and induct new members for upcoming efforts.
"Common Dead was never exclusively a solo project, and that was something I voiced early on through websites and interviews" explains Laurenson. "Each time I would find myself playing all the instruments, it was just a matter of circumstances I was facing at the time and wanting to get something done in spite of it all. I'm looking to burn that cycle. I'm glad I got those solo works in the books, I'm proud of that era, but now I'm interested in starting a new era, and having more of a team."
Submissions from possible bandmates in the Montreal region are welcome at email@example.com. For more info and updates, join the band's Facebook page.

Norwegian black metal deconstructivist cell Furze has completed the fifth chapter in the band's curious discography, and is prepared to release its most psychedelically-inclined blackened rock spectacle to date, in the form of "Psych Minus Space Control." The following press release was issued about the album:
"Those who have studied previous releases cultivated by the Furzement are aware how each album this rogue outfit unleash steadily dumbfounds and intrigues, the more adventurous musical deviants immediately come back for more. The songs of Furze are almost completely cultivated by the infamous Woe J. Reaper -- who metaphysically cultures these hymns, from inception, through execution, all the way into production of the final product including the cultivation cover artwork and overall aesthetics of each release's delivery.
"A plethora of Furze releases have infiltrated the masses over the past fourteen or so, years including several EPs and a slew of scattered demos, amidst four LPs. Trident Autocrat (2000) and Necromanzee Cogent (2003) were initially released on Apocalyptic Empire Records and later reissued by Candlelight Records directly after releasing the UTD full-length worldwide in 2007, followed by the 2010-released Reaper Subconscious Guide via Agonia Records. Shai Hulud is preparing to record a fourth album (second for Metal Blade Records) in April 2012. This album will serve as the follow up to 2008's "Misanthropy Pure." Matt Fox, Matt Fletcher, and co. have completed writing the new album, and have confirmed that they've enlisted the production talents of original Hulud vocalist and current New Found Glory guitarist Chad Gilbert, the vocalist on Shai Hulud's debut full length album "Hearts Once Nourished With Hope And Compassion."
Chad Gilbert elaborates: "Matt Fox from Shai Hulud hit me up while on tour about potentially producing their new album. I immediately thought it could be an interesting and fun team up but I really wanted to hear new demos before agreeing. He sent me a few new songs and I was pleasantly surprised! The songs were awesome and felt very classic; the melodic hardcore metal they are already admired for but taken to another level. I think with us teamed up we can make the best Shai Hulud record yet!"
Matt Fox adds: "It started with this riff. Like a lot of albums do. It's a pretty cool riff, Chad liked it, so I showed him a few more. He seemed to like the others, and had some really cool ideas for them, too. This was a few years ago, and that's when we first entertained the idea working on a record together.
"Fast forward to when we are almost ready to book studio time… let's see if Chad remembers any of those riffs. He remembered liking them, and asked to hear more. By this time some of these riffs made it into completed songs. We were pretty happy to hear he liked how everything evolved, and that he'd be interested in working with us on the next Shai Hulud album.
"I remember at 14 years old or so I was extremely excited because Wolverine was teaming up with the Punisher in 'Punisher: War Journal.' I don't know if anything can match that youthful elation, but this is right up there, pretty damn close." More...
San Francisco/North Bay deathcore unit Ænimus recently entered NB Studios in Santa Rosa, CA to begin recording an as-yet-untitled debut full-length album with drummer/producer Nick Botelho. The band will be filming studio video updates throughout the recording process, and each video will contain short clips of brand new material in order to give fans a taste of what they can expect from the forthcoming album. The first clip showcasing Nick on drums can be seen below.
Nick had the following to say about going from writing the album to finally getting into the studio to start recording, "Coming into the studio to record this album is a huge milestone for Ænimus. This is the first full length album all of us in the band have ever written. We just finished writing and recording the drums for it the day before I had to dismantle all the recording gear to take back to my studio. Despite that last minute pressure, I couldn't be more proud of how it turned out. When I first joined the band, I wasn't really sure if things were going the right direction as far as the writing style, especially since two of the main writers of this album, Brian (Deebs) and Josh, had never been in a band together before. Since then we've come to understand each others musical ideas a little better, and our fans will hear that progression of style in the music. Needless to say, we can't wait for everyone to hear this album!"
The track listing for the album is as follows:
1. Asherah's Hourglass
2. The Awakening
3. The Grasp of Ruin
5. Descent Into Chaos
6. Black Malice Construct
7. Black Malice Alchemy
9. Heavy Lies the Crown
12. The Final Delirium More...

Legendary death metal legion Six Feet Under today unveils the first single from forthcoming studio offering, "Undead." Slated for North American release on May 22nd, 2012 through Metal Blade Records, the 12 track recording was produced by Mark Lewis (Deicide, Devildriver) and mixed by Jason Suecof (Whitechapel, Job For A Cowboy), at Audio Hammer Studios in Sanford, Florida. The following press release was issued about the album:
"Led by the inimitable Chris Barnes, possessor of one of the most dominant and instantly recognizable voices of the death metal genre, Undead offers up an overhauled lineup. Now featuring Barnes alongside new guitarist Rob Arnold (ex- Chimaira), longtime guitarist Steve Swanson, new bassist Jeff Hughell, and drummer Kevin Talley, whose history blasting for Dying Fetus, Misery Index, and Chimaira speaks for itself, SIX FEET UNDER 2012 finds the band reinvigorated and churning out some of the most visceral, in-your-face, and downright horrifying tunes in their renowned discography of brutality both, lyrically and musically."
Comments vocalist/death metal ambassador Chris Barnes of the recording: "I'm in pretty much the best headspace I've been in since myself and [former guitarist] Allen West started this band in 1993. I'm super excited about the new record. It's a rejuvenation; it's a rebirth of SIX FEET UNDER, and fans will definitely latch on to my excitement and how focused I am in the lyrics I've written… The hypocrisies of daily life, things that affect us that spawn aggression, loneliness, sadness, there's a lot of emotions going on across the record, and I guess that the dark horror that humans cause is my niche."

Commented vocalist Helmuth, “Around 2006 I [had] contacted Erik the first time, I guess. We talked about the producing of the Bondage Goat Zombie album, but he wasn’t available. This time, we have to do it! Our sound, attitude… or lets say trademark, is a symbiosis of all extremities that came out of this glorious genre...diabolical black death metal.
“Since February 2012 we [rehearsed] and [wrote] hard on nine shredding sound collages. To recordchapter X with Erik is perfect, since he exactly [knows] what we need and how we get this done.
“The thing is, the new compositions are full of intensity and pure aggression. The combination of European Metal coldness, atmosphere and sickest elements - crossed with an American brutal sound, is the master plan. This experiment is going to be ultra-sick! More...

Sweden's Nominon has issued the following announcement about gearing up to enter the recording studio:
"The band will enter a studio in Växjö, Sweden, next week to start the recording of the fifth full-length album, which is yet untitled. It will be released on LP/CD through DEATHGASM RDS this summer. The plan at the moment is to include nine songs on the CD version and then add one song as bonus on the LP version. Sheer brutality awaits!
"We've just received some details about the forthcoming split 7" with Nominon / Kommandant. It'll most likely be out late in April through the new Swedish underground label CRYPTORIUM RDS. The label just got the test press and it sounds gruesome as fuck. For this split release Nominon recorded a very intense and kick ass cover of Impaled Nazarene's 'Human Proof' from their killer and underestimated album 'Nihil.'
"For those who doesn't understand what Nominon stands for, here's a brand new review of the latest 7" EP 'Manifestation Of Black' on Voices from the Darkside.
"The planned colloboration with the booking agency BLACKENED MASS MEDIA won't happen after all, simply due to the fact that the agency pretty much were stillborn. So from now on Nominon will go back to basics and manage themselves. So for ALL booking inquires, contact: firstname.lastname@example.org
"More info will follow, so be sure to check back if you're a fan underground death metal that is."
