Jacksonville, FL grindcore act I Am The Unicorn have signed with Midgets With Machetes Records. The band, consisting of former members of My Better Angel, waitANOTHERday, Die Juliet and Ace Tone, have plans to release their debut full-length in late 2007 via the label.
The band issued the following statement regarding the signing and their subsequent search for a new guitarist:
"We are grateful to Brad and Antonio for giving us this opportunity. Trying to get any sort of break out of Jacksonville, especially with the type of music we make, is like a 1 in a billion chance so we are determined to make the most of it. We are currently seeking a new guitarist. Prior to our signing to Midgets with Machetes our guitarist Jeremy King informed us of his decision to leave the band in order to focus on college. Jeremy was an important part of this band and our sound, he remains our dear friend and we wish him all the best in whatever path life leads him. In our new guitarists we seek someone with at least some band experience. Someone with decent gear who can live up to the rigors a touring band must go through. If you are in Jacksonville or the surrounding areas and would like to tryout please send a message to our Myspace and we will set up a session."
Envelope-pushing Christian hardcore band THE BLUE LETTER have signed to Blood & Ink. "We first met and saw THE BLUE LETTER at Cornerstone 2006 and immediately knew we wanted to work with this fantastic band," said the label of the Sacramento, California band. "Not only does their music venture into areas seldom (if ever) touched by Christian bands, but they're also incredible live."
Blood & Ink Records will release The Blue Letter's debut, "Prima Facie," in July. In the meantime, you can check out some of the band's material on their MySpace page.
Austria's MASTIC SCUM will release "The EP's Collection" on June 4th, via Germany's Power It Up Records.
According to a new band update, "the idea for this compilation CD was born years ago as we received different requests from fans and friends to put all vinyl releases together at one CD. Not only because the EPs were hard to get or sold out, also because record-players run off with time. Well, this CD will contain all EP`s released on vinyl, including 32 tracks with two unreleased tracks."
Bleeding Through has officially announced the departure of guitarist Scott Danough, stating: "As some of you may have heard, there has been a member change in Bleeding Through, the first member change in over three years. Scott Danough is no longer a member of Bleeding Through. We felt that we had grown apart and it was time for both parties to move on. We wish him the best."
As publicized yesterday amidst news of I Killed The Prom Queen's break-up, IKTPQ guitarist Jona Weinhofen will replace Danough.
Meanwhile, Bleeding Through continues to write material for their next release.
Orange County, California rock (one-time metal) band Eighteen Visions has called it quits. Formed in 1996, the band released several albums with Trustkill Records before jumping to Epic Records in 2004. Bassist Mick Morris sent Lambgoat a band statement:
"After several years of touring and quite a few album releases we have decided that it is time to go our seperate ways. We have been a band for a very long time and feel good about everything we were able to accomplish. At this point in our lives and our careers we feel its time to move on to something fresh and new. Whether it be music, touring or just being at home to live and enjoy life. We would like to thank all of our fans, friends and families for all of the great support over the years. We would also like to thank all of the bands we have shared the stage with and everyone who has ever worked with the band, opened a door or reached out a hand. We will be playing our final two shows in April. One in San Diego and one in Orange County. Come rock with us one more time."
Sundsvall, Sweden-based death metallers IN BATTLE will release their fourth album, "Kingdom of Fear", on June 25 via Nocturnal Art Productions/Candlelight Records. The follow-up to 2004's "Welcome to the Battlefield" was recorded at Epidemic studios in Sundsvall and was mixed by UNLEASHED's Fredrik Folkare at Chrome studios in Stockholm. The CD contains "11 songs of raw thrashy death metal," according to a press release. Two video clips for the album have already been filmed: "Kingdom of Fear" and "The Dead Shall See".
IN BATTLE's new album will honor the memory of the group's former drummer, Otto Wiklund, who passed away last August. Wiklund appeared on IN BATTLE's first two albums — "Lost in the Shadows Gray" (1997) and "The Rage of the Northmen" (1998) — and was also the session drummer for SETHERIAL, with whom he recorded the "Lords of the Nightrealm" album (1997).
IN BATTLE's last album, "Welcome to the Battlefield" (2004, Cold/Metal Blade Records), was recorded at Courthouse Studio in Östersund, Sweden and at Necromorbus Studio in Stockholm, Sweden. The CD was mixed and mastered at Erik Rutan's (HATE ETERNAL/ex-MORBID ANGEL guitarist) Mana Recording Studios in Tampa, Florida with engineer Shawn Ohtani. Rutan also laid down a guest.
Apothys issue the following update on their Myspace page:
"Today, the guys in Apothys has inducted their new drummer, Beau, into the band. With high dexterity, quick feet, and thunderous drum rolls, Beau is an excellent addition to the band. Already he knows five songs and counting. Its amazing the rate that he is learning the songs.
Unfortunately, we are now looking for a new bassist. Nick is persevering through college and striving for his bachelor's degree. We parted on good terms and he still remains a friend with the band. The requirements and recommendations pretty much stand the same with the bassist position as it did with the drummer position.

CHIMAIRA frontman Mark Hunter announced from the stage at the band's concert in Chicago Sunday night (April 8) that they will take part in the third annual Sounds of the Underground tour, set to take place this summer. As previously reported, GWAR has been confirmed as the headliner of this year's event, according to a posting on the group's web site. Other acts that are rumored to be playing the festival include SHADOWS FALL, JOB FOR A COWBOY and EVERY TIME I DIE. An official announcement regarding this summer's lineup is expected soon.
The second annual Sounds of the Underground tour featured performances by AS I LAY DYING, IN FLAMES, TRIVIUM, CANNIBAL CORPSE, GWAR, TERROR, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, BEHEMOTH, THE CHARIOT and THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD, among others.
The Sounds of the Underground organizers took a different approach to last summer's festival by keeping the number of bands on the bill down and extending the length of set times. In 2005 most bands got no more than 30 minutes to play.

Devils Island post the following update on their myspace page regarding the death of their first guitarist:
"It is hard and unreal to write this. One of Devils Island's founding members, Ivan Martynovich, died in a car crash saturday night. He was 21. Over these years, Ivan managed to do more crazy shit than most guys will ever think about. He was crazy, but he harbored wisdom, charm, the biggest heart and the biggest pair of balls Ukraine has ever produced. He died doing what he loved - driving fast. A true friend, a deserving son, and one of the few good men. We still cannot comprehend that he had to go.

Umeå, Sweden-based, female-fronted metal band 6TH AWAKENING has parted ways with drummer Mikael Linné. The group's statement on the matter reads as follows:
"We have a sad sad announcement to make. For seven years we have had the pleasure of having one of the finest drummers around in our family. During these years Mikael has been struggling to follow a path that several bands in the genre spit on. This has sometimes put 6TH AWAKENING and mostly Mikael in a situation where personal belifes have been compromised. This has been a situation that during the last month has been all-consuming and we as a band have come to the conclusion that 6TH AWAKENING and Mikael will part ways. We wish Mikael all the best in the future."
6TH AWAKENING recently signed a deal with the Bainbridge Island, Washington label Aphotic Records. The group will enter the studio later in the year to begin recording its debut album for a tentative summer release.
6TH AWAKENING's most recent recording was a four-song demo/EP, entitled "Deadincide". All four cuts from the CD — "Black", "The One", "Dreamworld", and "Songs of Moab" — are available for free download from the group's official web site. A video for the song "Tongue Reaper" can be viewed at this location (Windows Media).
ONCE DEAD, the Christian metal band featuring former members of VENGEANCE RISING, has inked a deal with Open Grave Records. The group is currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on its debut album, "Visions of Hell", tentatively due this summer.
According to a press release, "ONCE DEAD boasts a refreshing dose of old-school thrash metal, combined with a triple guitar assault and a lineup of seasoned musical veterans. All of the members have impressive musical resumes, with high-profile acts under their belts such as DELIVERANCE, FASEDOWN, HIRAX, SIRCLE OF SILENCE, THE BLAMED and THE CRUCIFIED." More...

"After the tour ended, we went in the studio with Steve Austin to record the long awaited follow up to 'Extermination Vision', which was to be released on Goodfellow Records in the fall of 2006. We spent a very cool week up there in Massachusetts with Steve and when we left, all the music was done, we just were going to finish the vocals up in D.C. and then off to Scott Hull for mix/master.
