With more than 15,000 bands in our database, and hordes more than that in existence, every Monday we like to take a little time to highlight three underground bands that deserve your attention.
Usually our unearthed bands focus on a single sub-genre or geographic region, but today we’ll look bands that have all experienced a similar phenomena: the flip-flop. Favored maneuver of politicians everywhere, and for some reason also plenty of metal bands, these guys aren’t doing it to pick up more votes, as their flip-flips frequently cost them fans.
Metal has its fair share of musical flip-floppers who went from heavy to soft, vice versa, or smashed opposing elements together to create a different type of sound. Our previous look at three genre flip-floppers covered a variety of them, and there are even more well known acts that have taken this route, from Darkthrone to Anathema and Therion. Below you’ll find a sampling of three lesser known acts that have significantly changed sound from their earlier works.
This Swedish death metal act had a cult hit back in 2009 with debut full-length “The Horror” (reviewed here), which was a brutal and unrelenting take on death/thrash that never let up. Short but sweet, the tracks were brief bites of devastation that didn’t overstay their welcome.
Fast forward to 2013, and Tribulation is an altogether different beast. Unlike the other two bands we’ll look at today, this time the change in sound actually made the songs much longer than before. “The Formulas of Death” (check out the review) saw the band become a progressive death metal outfit with plenty of melody and unexpected stylistic shifts. If it weren’t for the remaining thrash influence in the guitar sounds and the recurring death vocals, this would essentially be two different bands.
Hear the difference yourself through the clips below taken from each album. There is a lot going on musically throughout the second album, so a single song doesn’t really give enough to digest the breadth of the change, but you can also check out the new song “When the Sky is Black with Devils” via the band’s Facebook profile.
Milwaukee's Enabler has locked down several new bouts of Spring tour dates in support of the brand new "Shift Of Redemption" EP, out this week via Think Fast! Records. Hear the full "Shift Of Redemption" EP right now via Invisible Oranges.
The new North American tour dates include a week-long trek through the Midwest later this month, as well as another three-date Midwestern assault in mid-May. These sessions include shows with Weekend Nachos, Early Graves, Rotten Sound, Dead in the Dirt and more, as well as a stop at the two-day D.I.Y. punk/hardcore gathering Forward Ohio Fest in late April with the likes of Wartorn, Raw Power, Masakari and more joining the skirmish.
In addition Enabler has also confirmed their first tour of Australia, with a destructive ten-date expedition alongside Urns now set to go down in July. More...
Jungle Rot has checked in with the following statement about missing tonight's (April 8th) show in St. Paul due to vehicle problems:
"Unfortunately, we are having issues with our touring vehicle. It is at the mechanics now, but it looks like we are going to miss tonights show at Station 4 in St. Paul, Minnesota. If you were planning on coming to see us tonight, we sincerely apologize. We're hoping to catch back up to the tour on Tuesday in Iowa."

Gothic metal act Tristania will be releasing new album "Darkest White" via Napalm Records on May 31st, 2013. Tristania guitarist Anders has now posted an extensive studio report online via the band's website here, and excerpts from the studio report follow:
"It has been a few weeks since we completed the recordings for our 7th album, Darkest White. It has been intense. Everything recorded within one month. That’s very fast for a band like Tristania (shortest recording period so far), especially considering our four singers and the detailed arrangements. It has been long days and nights in four different studios. Rich amounts of stress, pressure, frustration and minimal sleep. But definitely worth it.
"While I’m writing this, the album is finally completed, and we’ve just received the final mastered version of the album. We are very proud of the finished product. For the first time I can honestly say that I’m 100% satisfied with the sound on a Tristania album. Even more remarkable for me, it’s the first time I can say that the general vibe of the final result turned out exactly as I was hoping for – only better.
"When entering studio to record an album, you always have goals for how you want the songs to end up; some kind of vision you want to fulfill. It is not always easy to describe with words, but you know exactly how you want the vibe of the album to be at the end of the day. This time around we wanted these songs to sound brutal, intense and full of energy. The sound on our two previous albums has been quite clean and controlled. It was obvious that these songs deserved a different approach. More...

With a new album in the works, one that includes guest appearances by Sepultura’s Paulo JR, new video on the way and a different voice on the microphone—Eminence chose the ideal time to make a splash north of the Equator. MetalSucks.net recently ran an article about Justin Osbourn of Slasher Design plagiarizing artwork for album covers, and the band Aborted has now posted the following statement regarding plagiarized art gracing the cover of latest album "Global Flatline" (reviewed here):
"Okay, After all this ranting and the artwork for Global Flatline being one of the most prominent images in the article about plagiarism from Slasher Design, we decided to put a statement up regarding this. Honestly we did not want to get involved but everyone bringing it up all the time by either posts or private messages is getting out of control.
"People are starting to blame the band. When a band commissions an artist for original art and pays their hard earned money on it (and trust me this was not cheap artwork) only to find out a year later about this plagiarism thing: the bands are the biggest victims in this story. We had no idea about any of this and loved the artwork when we got it, assuming it was all hand painted and original artwork for our record. Now this is all tainted with a bitter after taste for all of us, we have merchandise printed with this, stage banners and what not.
"All we can ask from our fans is to be understanding of the matter and know that we feel cheated even more. We are still very proud of the album and nothing will change that in the end.
"Thank you all for understanding & the support, see you guys on tour later this month!" More...
