Since their legendary debut Wolfheart (1995), MOONSPELL have been on an ominous, winding path of musical exploration. 'Memorial' shows the band can still be atmospheric and melodic while also being extremely heavy. A video for the single, 'Finisterra' was recently shot and a clip for the 'Making Of Finisterra' has been posted online here.
Vocalist Fernando Ribeiro talks about the meaning behind 'Finisterra': "It translates from Latin as the end of the Earth. In the Middle Ages, Portugal stood on that position as it was, geographically, the end of Europe, and, by all means, the end of the known world. From Portugal on, across the Atlantic, there was darkness, mystery, fear and curiosity (Sapere Aude-Dare to know). I think this position still, to the day, haunts us and when mixed with personal stories and feelings, created a song that simply represents someone at the end of the world looking further down, not knowing if he wants to go or to stay or to come back."
MTV.com reports that Nebula's "Lightbringer" in comic Dane Cook's new HBO series "Tourgasm," which starts airing May 7. The track, which is from the band's new album Apollo, will play while Cook addresses the camera to explain the setup for one of the scenes in the show.
"Fever Frey", the first single from NEBULA's new album "Apollo" is still available on the web site of the band's label, liquorandpokermusic.com.
"Apollo", the band's second full-length on Liquor and Poker and fourth overall, was produced by Daniel Rey (RAMONES, MISFITS, L7) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (THE MARS VOLTA, SONIC YOUTH, FRANZ FERDINAND).
Mastodon are nearing the completion of the recording of their new conceptual album "Blood Mountain" with producer Matt Bayles (Norma Jean, Isis) and will begin mixing it with Rich Costey (Audioslave, My Chemical Romance) in the coming weeks. Tentative track titles for the album, which is expected out through Warner in August, are as follows:
"Circle Of Cysquatch"
"Hunters Of The Sky"
"The Sleeping Giant"
"The Colony Of Birchmen"
"The Siberian Divide"
"Hand Of Stone"
"The Wolf Is Loose"
"This Mortal Soil"
With Blood Mountain, which has taken more than two months to record, Dailor said he's hoping his band and others like it can accomplish something huge: to rattle complacent rock fans who might not grasp what Mastodon have been trying to do since forming in 1999.
"I hope we can start a prog revolution, because the timing's right," he said. "You've got a Tool record that's coming out, an Isis record that's coming out, a Mars Volta record that's coming out, a Mastodon record that's coming out, and I hope that converges into something really awesome for music where it doesn't become pop, but there's a little more sharing of the pie. It would be cool if you had kids in their bedrooms not trying to learn Linkin Park songs, but they're trying to learn Mastodon songs. It's cool music that's honest and from the heart, and it's technically challenging."
Based on Dailor's description, Blood Mountain's going to follow in Leviathan's heady footsteps. While Leviathan focused on dystopian author Herman Melville's opus "Moby Dick," the new album will revolve around an unnamed citizen's ascension to the apex of a snowcapped mountain.
"It's about climbing up a mountain and the different things that can happen to you when you're stranded on a mountain, in the woods, and you're lost," the drummer said. "You're starving, and hallucinating, running into strange creatures. You're being hunted. It's about that whole struggle."
Mars Volta frontman Cedric Bixler Zavala will make a guest appearance on the track "The Siberian Divide", while guest appearances from Scott Kelly of Neurosis and Ikey Owens of Mars Volta fame are also expected to appear on the album as well.

Swedish epic/power metallers FALCONER have set "Northwind" as the title of their new album — their first since the departure of singer Kristoffer Göbel and return of Mathias Blad. Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "Catch the Shadows", "Northwind", "Legend and the Lore", "Waltz with the Dead", "Long Gone By" and "Tower of the Queen".
Commented FALCONER guitarist Stefan Weinerhall: "Our label boss visited the studio in February. He got very supportive and positive about the new album as he heard some of the material.
"As [we previously announced] the album will be released in September/October 2006. The first edition will contain a bonus disc with four traditional songs in Swedish and a short DVD documentary of the recording session. Even the booklet itself will contain... well, more stuff.
"In July, the last recordings and the mix will take place and meanwhile I'm coming up with more details and additions to the orchestrations. Mathias is penning down the harmony and choir arrangements. This time around you will get more folky and classical instruments added to the songs, something that really enhance things and make it more colourful. I tell you, I'm dying to hear the final result. There's never been a FALCONER album this thought through, produced and filled with nuggets of gold... but I'm not the one to review it, I think."

NOVEMBERS DOOM post the following messege on their myspace blog:
"NOVEMBERS DOOM are scheduled to begin recording the follow-up to 2005's "The Pale Haunt Departure" on June 16. Once again, the production team will consist of Chris Djuricic for tracking and Dan Swan to mix the final recording. Mastering will again be handled by James Murphy.
In a statement about the upcoming studio work, the band says, "Consistency and quality are very important to us, to insure that anyone who was a fan of the previous CD, will once again be able to comfortably expect nothing less then a stellar production. Chris Djuricic, Dan Swan and James Murphy were the perfect choice for 'The Pale Haunt Departure' and the perfect compliment to NOVEMBERS DOOM. We're honored to be working with them once again.
"Working hard on the new material, we've reached the final stage of pre-production, creating well rounded, and a natural progression of songs, which continue where 'The Pale Haunt Departure' ends. Always adding new elements to our sound, there will be a few surprises mixed in, but remaining true to the band you expect.""

On April 22nd, Vader will start recording session of their new studio album, entitled "Impressions In Red." The album will be recorded, mixed and mastered at Hertz Studio with brothers Slawek & Wojtek Wieslawscy at the helm. The recording session will run through May, 25th. The new album, unlike the futuristic content of "The Art Of War" MCD, will be entirely focused around dark and mystical vision of hell on earth, inspired by works of medieval visionaries like Hieronymous Bosh. Release date is scheduled for September 4th through Regain Records.
In July, the band is going to shot a videoclip based on that theme as well. "Impressions In Red" artwork and the whole layout have been prepared by Greek maestro Seth (Paradise Lost, Rotting Christ, Septic Flesh).
On September 17th, Vader will kick off their 90-dates European tour. In 2007, the band will appear on tours in North and South America, Asia, Eastern Europe and some other countries.
Judas Priest are creating their first conceptual album based upon the life and predictions of Nostradamus. This album will be theatrically staged and performed in its entirity as an epic musical by Judas Priest.
Judas Priest took the Royal Albert Hall in London by storm on Friday night with the Scorpions, Ian Gillan & Friends and Boned, all in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust. The show was a tribute to Tommy Vance ("Friday Rock Show"), who passed away last year. Photos from the show have been posted on the official Judas Priest website.
Finnish metallers Insomnium has entered the Fantom Studio to begin recording their third album. The songs which are to be recorded include such dreary titles as “At the Gates of Sleep”, “The Mortal Share”, “Drawn to Black” and “The Killjoy”. The new material is clearly more aggressive, punchy and tighter than the previous album but the melancholic mood, wistful melodies, doomish passages and progressive twists are still present. “For sure this is going to be our greatest effort so far”, tells vocalist/bassist Niilo Sevänen. “This will be a very versatile album and each song will be full of nuances. There is fury and there is sorrow. Scandinavian melodic death metal at its finest!”
You can view the progress online in the Insomnium studio diary.
Insomnium’s third album will be released in autumn 2006 by Candlelight Records.
After Canadian documentarian Sam Dunn interviewed members of Voivod for his movie, "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey," Voivod recruited him to make a film about their group.
"It was a real honor to be asked, and we've already started shooting," said Dunn. "The documentary is going to be about Piggy's life [the band's founding guitarist, Denis D'Amour, who passed away of colon cancer last year] and the making of the new record and how those are tied together." No release date has been set for the project.
"Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" will come out as a double-DVD on May 23.
System of a Down are set to launch a three-day campaign in Washington DC for the recognition of the Armenian genocide.
Singer Serj Tankian and drummer John Dolmayan will kick off the campaign on April 24. Their aims are to urge Speaker Of The House Dennis Hastert and other Congressional leaders to acknowledge the historical event in which Turkey allegedly slaughtered 1.5 million Armenians between 1915 and 1923.
At 5pm the band members will join the Armenian National Committee Of America and Armenian Youth Federation in leading their demonstration outside the gates of the Turkish Embassy.
The following day, Tankian and Dolmayan will give interviews to the political media in Washington before hosting a congressional screening of 'Screamers', a new documentary by filmmaker Carla Garapedian which focuses on System Of A Down's global campaign for the recognition of the Armenian genocide.
Key members of Congress will meet with the band on the Wednesday (April 26) as the musicians urge them to allow a vote on legislation recognising the genocide.
At 5.30pm, Tankian and Dolmayan will take part in the eleventh annual Capitol Hill commemoration of the historical event.
Before the three-day campaign in Washington DC, System Of A Down will perform at their yearly 'Souls' benefit concert in Los Angeles on April 23.
Taking place at the city's Greek Theatre, this year's concert will be raising awareness for an Armenian Genocide Resolution.
Canadian extremists Strapping Young Lad have completed tracking their highly anticipated new album, '"The New Black," which frontman Devin Townsend promises to be the group’s definitive release. The soon-to-be genre defying epic will showcase a new dimension of the SYL beast that puts an emphasis on incorporating more hooks and catchier melodies into the group’s renowned insanity, which is backed up with an abundance of devastating guitar solos. It would be safe to say that you can expect the unexpected.
The album’s U.S. touring campaign will kick off June 29th, as the group joins the second stage lineup at Ozzfest alongside such acclaimed acts as Atreyu, Bleeding Through and Unearth, among others. Townsend further describes his excitement over being a part of Ozzfest and sheds some light on their new disc: “The recording process went amazingly well, and Strapping as a whole is really excited about this effort. We were very inspired with the idea of doing Ozzfest, and the concept we are running with on this record is really based around abhorring the current music scene, yet being a part of it in some weird way. SYL is ready to be a subversive product for the unwitting 14-year-olds to scream along with.
“We also intend to sprinkle a little ugly around all the pretty bands this year. You can think of us as the proverbial pubic hair in the cheesecake of this year’s festival. We are ugly, large and angry. We have also been around longer as a band than 90% of the other bands. This summer is going to be crazy. See you all soon.” More...
Cleveland, Ohio's all-female metal act, Level-C, has been on a steady rise in the metal underground since first forming in 2002, having been one of the top 10 bands on the MTV series "Battle For Ozzfest". They're lead guitarist Christina Crago answered some of my questions recently to keep all of us current on the band's progress. More...
