Timo Tolkki………his name has become synonymous with power metal, and in particular Stratovarius, a band he joined in 1985 after its original creation under the moniker Black Water by then drummer Tuomo Lassila, then guitarist Staffan Stråhlman and then bassist John Vihervä. It was Lassila who invented the name “Stratovarius.” At the time Tolkki joined, he was both the guitarist and the vocalist. From 1989’s “Fright Night” to 2003’s “Elements, Pt. II.,” the band put out a prolific string of ten amazing albums, with so many classic songs they are too numerous to count. During that time, in 1994, Timo Kotipelto was added as the band’s vocalist, with Tolkki as the band’s composer and guitarist. 1995 saw the addition of famed keyboardist Jens Johansson and drummer Jörg Michael and the ousting of founder Tuomo Lassila and longtime keyboardist Antti Ikonen (who would later work again with Tolkki on his solo records).
It was in late 2003, after “Elements, Pt. II” was released that a bizarre string of events saw the band break up and reunify in 2005 for the release of the maligned self-titled album. Two very different sides of the story have been told over the years about the end times before the current incarnation of Stratovarius was formed. When the dust settled, the band and its back catalog were handed over to Timo Kotepelto, Jens Johansson and Jorg Michael and Lauri Porra. More...

Most of the song is here, but I miss the start by about a minute. Video quality is also a bit iffy at times due to the lighting, sorry about that!" More...
Vancouver non-profit label Revolution Harmony has announced an upcoming charity single titled "We Are," which will feature the talents of Ihsahn (Emperor, Peccatum), Serj Tankian (System of a Down), and Devin Townsend.
The single was composed, arranged, programmed, and produced by Ray Holroyd, mixed by Rohan Onraet, and mastered by Ted Jensen. The label comments on the single:
"The lyrical theme in 'We Are' is based on the concept behind Revolution Harmony, which is essentially the belief that musical harmony has the power to inspire a revolution towards societal harmony. The single is dedicated to Nelson Mandela and the memory of Lucky Dube, regarded as South Africa's Bob Marley, and will be released worldwide on Mandela Day (18 July), with all proceeds donated to Buskaid, a charity that provides free music lessons and instruments to children in the townships of South Africa."
Serj Tankian stated: "It has been an absolute honor being involved with the Revolution Harmony project to bring much needed financial aid to Buskaid in South Africa. Music has saved my life and has the potential to create positive change in all those young kids struggling to make themselves heard and to survive. The song is a musical collage of complex yet moving colors intertwining genres and vibes."
Ihsahn also states: "I have followed this song since it was basically just a MIDI file and love how it has grown into this massive piece of music, so it was very easy to get inspired for lyrics and vocal lines. Knowing how music has shaped and enriched my own life, and how privileged I have been to be able to follow that passion, I really appreciate Buskaid's work to enable young people to follow that same path. Like most, my involvement in charity has been very generic, like signing up for donations to some of the global organizations, but Revolution Harmony has given me the opportunity to contribute with something personal, together with people who share my passion for music. I'm honored to be part of this. With our different backgrounds I think this just underlines the message of the song; a deep passion for music that goes beyond how we are typically isolated and divided."
A mainstay of the melo-death scene, Sweden's Dark Tranquillity is due to follow-up last album "We Are The Void" with new opus "Construct," which deals with themes of the constructs makind invents to justify bad behavior and bizarre beliefs.
"I wish we could be more honest with ourselves and see things more clearly and be more rational," said vocalist Mikael Stanne when I got the chance to chat him up about the impending album.
The "Construct" release is now only a month away, due out on May 27th in Europe and on May 28th in North America via Century Media Records. Mikael was eager to discuss the band's 10th studio album, explaining how this will be a different beast from previous offerings, as well as sharing some insight into the band's recent bassist split.

Psychedelic extreme metal vanguard Gigan will begin recording a newest studio offering next month.
Titled "Multi-Dimensional Fractal Sorcery And Super-Science," the band's third full-length, and second to be released through Willowtip Records, will once again be recorded with long-time friend and engineer Sanford Parker and will be unleashed sometime this Fall.
Elaborates Gigan mastermind, Eric Hersemann, "This third Gigan record is proving to be the most concise and deadly so far. I'm very pleased with the overall dynamics and vibe the current music is creating within our minds. This is the first Gigan record I have written outside of Florida and my new environment here in Chicago has provided unique inspiration that resulted in some complex and bizarre results. Psychedelic brutality at its finest."
In related news, Gigan’s first show of 2013 will come in the form of the Scion Rock Fest 2013 set to take place in Memphis, Tennessee on June 1st. The band will be performing alongside a lineup that includes Testament, Melvins, Arsis, Municipal Waste, Corrosion Of Conformity, Whitechapel, Six Feet Under, Vektor and more.
"Tides of War," the second full-length from the German traditional heavy metal act Sacred Gate is being released this month through Metal on Metal Records.
The band created a concept album about the Battle of Thermopylae, where 300 Spartans and their allies fought for freedom against invading Persians. Not a surprising choice of subject, considering that two founding members (vocalist Jim Over and guitarist Nicko Nikolaidis) have Greek origins.
According to the label, "The new album is undoubtedly a more mature, more epic and more confident effort that shows the band moving a few steps away from their main influence (Iron Maiden), and crystallizing their own style, with strong, melodic but rough vocals, outstanding guitar work and rock solid rhythm section."
Three songs off the album, "Defenders (Valour Is in Our Blood)", "Gates of Fire" and "Spartan Killing Machine" are available for streaming at the Metal on Metal website. A promo clip is also available below. The "Tides of War" track listing is:
1. The Coming Storm

5. Gates of Fire
6. Never to Return
7. The Final March
8. Spartan Killing Machine

The Norwegian black/jazz band Shining has released a live clip featuring a cover of King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man." Check it out below.
Shining will release the new album "One One One" on June 4th in Europe (excluding Norway) and June 7th in Germany and Austria.
Frontman and saxophonist Jørgen Munkeby comments: “In light of show at Rockefeller, we wanted to post one of my favorite live clips filmed at that very venue in November 2010. I do love the original version of King Crimson’s 21st Century Schizoid Man, but I also love it when twisting classics around gives them a brand new face. I feel this is the best version we have done of the song until now."
Stonegriff, the traditional doom metal band from Scania, southern Sweden, has joined the Metal on Metal Records roster. The band's debut album (following 3 self-released demos/EPs), entitled "Prologus Magicus," is scheduled for a July release.
Jowita Kaminska-Peruzzi, Metal on Metal Records CEO, stated: "We love doom metal, but unfortunately more often than not we come across bands that label their music as doom (or are labeled as such by record companies and media), but are either completely unlistenable or 'only' boring for us (like all drone, sludge and most stoner bands).
"We dig death/doom in many cases, but most of all, when we say 'doom,' we mean traditional and epic doom METAL. And in our opinion, there are rather few bands that play this purest style of the heaviest music and do it with real class and with balls, so when we come across one, there's a big smile plastered on our faces as we hit the 'play' button over and over again. Such was the case with Stonegriff. More...

Christian act Deliverance will be releasing the band's final album "Hear What I Say!" this coming September 3rd, 2013 via Roxx Records. The label comments:
"In 1985, in a small damp garage in Los Angeles, CA three musicians met up with a 15 year old singer/guitar player who placed an ad in the local Recycler Newspaper classifieds for 'band wanted.' Little did they know that this was the beginning of what would become one of the most revered and celebrated musical entities, known to the metal world as Deliverance!
"After only a few months of rehearsing, Deliverance began their march on the LA Club Scene. Playing and becoming regulars to such venues as The Waters Club, The Whiskey a Go Go, The Troubadour, The Country Club and The Oasis the group was becoming well known amongst their peers and garnering a rather large fan base in a short time.
"After the release of their four song demo, Greetings of Death in 1987, the band became a nationally known act as the now infamous demo was receiving ranting reviews, and orders were coming in from all over the United States, and even South America and stretching into Canada. This of course led to invites to play shows states-wide, and also playing festivals in Southern and Northern California. More...

"They started writing songs and released the 3-track demo 'Seven Inches For The Second Attack' in 1998. Witchhammer left the band about 2 years later and was replaced by drummer Havoc. The second guitarist T.P. joined the band as well.
"With this new line-up they recorded the band's debut 'The Apparition,' which was released in 2002 via Iron Glory Records. Shortly after, the band went on The Apparition Tour 2002/2003. In 2004 they played at the RockHard and Keep It True festivals in Germany.
"In spring 2005, Metal Inquisitor signed with Hellion Records and released the second album 'Doomsday For The Heretic' in November 2005. Within the following years KronoS left the band, was replaced by Dutch G, re-joined the band and was forced to leave the band in late 2010 due to health issues. After a successful string of US dates, death metal legends Incantation are set to take their newest release, "Vanquish in Vengeance," to Europe for appearances in Paris, Switzerland and at the Neurotic Death Fest in Holland. Before heading across the pond, Incantation will make a stop in Miami, FL for a night of decimation with Hibernus Mortis, Ulcer and Masticator. The band issued the following statement regarding its recent live activities:
"While the 'old world' awaits us in the near future, here stateside was a furious and ruthless number of shows. Ohio, Texas and New York mark the first live performances for our new 'Vanquish in Vengeance' album. The staff of the Shrunken Head in Columbus made things go smoothly while the sick as fuck bands we had the pleasure of jamming with made it all the more awesome. Many hails to Soulless and The Council Beneath the Sea for their help and absolutely shredding. And of course everyone who attended the slaughter that night!
Next was Houston to headline the Masters of Death fest. Been many years since the bands' return. The energy was unreal when the stage was pummeled by the likes of our brothers in Master, HOD, La Sanche, and Nodens. Thanks and greetings to all our old friends and the help they provided that made the show a true honor to be part of. Lastly was a return to NY at the St. Vitus club in Brooklyn. Few words can capture what it means to see a metal bar such as theirs overflowing with metal heathens. Fuckin' sick! So, why not a sold out show with the likes of such bands as Evoken, Derketa, and Funerus. If it weren't for their support a lot would not have been possible. Brutal crowd, great staff and pure death metal!
With only a few weeks away we can no longer hold back our anticipation. Our crusade of blackened death for the 'Vanquish in Vengeance' album will now poison the shores of Europe once again. A few battles planed in France, Switzerland with our brothers in Supreme Lord! Then back to Tilburg, Holland for the Neurotic Deathfest! With so many hails in waiting to all of whom we'll reunite, and the greetings in infernal brotherhood to those whom we shall meet.
The abyss beckons us to battle! This time it's to the south, to Miami. We're really anxious to bring our 'Vengeance' to an area we've not returned to in many years. Hails to Hibernus Mortis, Ulcer and Masticator who will share in our assault. Rally to the blasphemy of unholy old school death metal, we look forward to seeing you heathens there. You've been warned!"

Danish melodic death metal act Mercenary announced that work on the band's seventh album is complete. The album will be entitled "Through Our Darkest Days." Mixing was completed on April 23, 2013 at Hansen Studios with long time collaborator/producer Jacob Hansen. The album is set for release through NoiseArt Records on July 27th (EU) and a week later in the US via Prosthetic Records.
The album's cover artwork (shown below) was created by Mircea Eftemie (guitarist of Mnemic), who recently created covers for Soilwork, Illdisposed and others.
The band commented on the cover: “Last year when we were busy with pre-productions, we considered reaching out to Mircea to ask if he'd like to give our new cover a shot, because we liked his recent stuff and wanted to try someone with a fresh approach. Against all odds, however, he actually beat us to it and contacted us first with the exact same offer, so it very much seemed as a collaboration that was meant to be.
"After a few sketches, we quickly locked on to the main motive of the cover below, which we felt was both iconic, mysterious and not least, oddly disturbing. Most importantly perhaps, we also felt that Mircea's artwork had managed in a natural way to combine something fresh with the style of our older album covers and their dark and atmospheric vibes.
"As our new album is very much a combination our latest material with a lot of the more traditional melodic and melancholic elements of previous Mercenary albums, we felt that this was a perfect visual expression of Mercenary's sound and identity in 2013.
The cover symbolizes a darkness that we have gone through as a band, which we feel that we have finally been able to put behind us. The title of the album is meant very positively and thematizes both the journey through existential darkness as a general theme and the ability to break through it. The lyrical universe is very much about making the most of life and not getting caught up in negativity.” More...
