Skindred Brings "Big Tings" To Bristol

Since first seeing them supporting Soulfly in February 2006, Skindred has gone from strength to strength, becoming one of the most popular bands in the United Kingdom today. Unsurprising then, that on returning to the same venue where I first saw them, they're headlining a sold out show with two big names supporting them, namely Danko Jones and CKY. With a new album entitled "Big Tings" (released today, April 27th,) Skindred were hotly tipped to be on form tonight.

Opening the show at half seven was Canadian rock and roll ambassador, Danko Jones. There was a decent sized crowd for an opening act, but Danko and his eponymous band were more than willing to show everyone what they're all about. Performing with just as much energy and ferocity as they did on the main stage at Graspop last year, the group opened with "I Gotta Rock" from the latest album, "Wildcat," and continued to tear through their set fueled by an undying love for rock and roll. "Sugar Chocolate" went down well with the crowd, in part thanks to the frenzied movements and vocals from Danko himself, as did "First Date" and "Gonna Be A Fight Tonight," before they closed off their time with another song from, "Wildcat," the anthemic, "Little RnR," which may well be the best song Danko Jones has ever written. A great set which would have delighted fans of the band and rock and roll in general, though there were a few who didn't seem to get it. More...

Ugly Kid Joe And Friends Rock Shepherds Bush

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a good rock show. Tonight in Shepherds Bush, West London, veteran Californian rockers, Ugly Kid Joe headlined a celebration of fun in what was a real treat for all in attendance. Performing at the Empire, a rather grand venue with a lot of history, the pairing of Ugly Kid Joe and former Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell's new band, Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons was one which promised a great time and did not disappoint.

Opening the show was Yellowcake, the new side project from Ugly Kid Joe frontman Whitfield Crane. The band have a very raw and old school minded approach, denying themselves any social media presence and only releasing their demo via cassette tape. While this makes it a little harder to get hold of their music, Yellowcake could very well break into the mainstream soon should they decide to go the more conventional route, as their music is so much more mature than most bands starting out can achieve. Featuring members from Australia and Japan, as well as the United States, this international collective have crafted a Black Sabbath reminiscent sound without being a run of the mill doom band. If you're able to see the group or pick up the tape, I strongly recommend them. More...

The band has also posted a lyric video for the song, "Mouth," which received the music video treatment in the initial promotion for the album, which can also be seen below.

It's been a long time coming, but we finally found the right moment to go back into the studio with Gomez (Orgone Studios) and play around with it. We hope you all enjoy the remixed version so you can hear how the songs were meant to sound." More...

Candlemass Posts New Lyric Video Online

The Swedish pioneers of timeless slowness, Candlemass, are back in top form, distilling the essence of epic doom metal!

It only takes a few short bars of the title track "House Of Doom" to feel that familiar sensation again: yes, Leif Edling aka the undisputed king of minor key songwriting has returned. With him, he brings frenzied riffing, melancholy made sound and warm Hammond organ tapestries that form the pillars of every Candlemass classic! You can check out the video for the title track below.

Mats Levén on the EP:

"We in Candlemass are proud to present 4 new songs to the world on thenew EP ’House of Doom’! The title track is inspired by the House of Doom game from Hyperfrost. We're also very happy that our label Napalm Records are with us all the way - 2018 will be a big year for Candlemass!"

At The Gates Posts New Video Online

Swedish melodic death metal revolutionaries At The Gates has posted a new music video online for the song, "Daggers Of Black Haze." You can check it out below. The song comes from the group's forthcoming new studio album, "To Drink From The Night Itself," which will be released on May 18th through Century Media.

At The Gates frontman Tomas Lindberg commented: "'Daggers Of Black Haze'represents the more progressive side of the new record. It has a lot of reference-points to our early back catalogue, both style wise, and the emotional setting. It is desperate and urgent, but still melancholic and epic. It is conceptually one of the cornerstones of the album. Driving home the point of the need for a war on apathy and the populistic forces that takes advantage of it. This is a fight against the abyss. A beacon for the importance of real art, real forms of expression, and importance of our understanding of our mutual cultural history. The video was filmed by Costin Chioreanu once again, and it is full of symbolism and heavy on the conceptual side. Costin displays the war for art and the importance of standing up to the oppressive powers and paradigms with his film. It is beautiful, striking, melancholic and I am very happy to see his vision of my concept." More...

Pallbearer Posts Mini Documentary Online

Little Rock, Arkansas-based ruminant progressive doom quartet, Pallbearer, recently premiered a brand new track entitled "Dropout" as the 53rd instalment of the Adult Swim Singles Program. The song, which is available digitally today, represents a subtle expansion of the singular doom-prog metal sound the Arkansas outfit is known for.

To coincide with this release, the band have also made an accompanying mini doc available which gives a behind the scenes look at the recording of "Dropout" - recorded at Fellowship Hall Sound in Little Rock, Arkansas. Check it out below.

Comments the band on the single: "We have almost always written music intended to exist as part of an album, with common musical and lyrical threads that tie many elements together into one release. Being freed from those confines in recording this song allowed us to explore themes and immediacy that might not have been uncovered in our more typical "large format" composition process." More...

Grimner Posts New Video Online

Following their recent successful raid on the UK, including a triumphant appearance at Hammerfest, Swedish Viking horders Grimner has released a video for their latest single, "Dödens Dans." You can check it out below. Speaking about the video, the band stated:

"Brothers and sisters! Today we want to present a song to you from our latest album ‘Vanadrottning’. It is called ‘Dödens Dans’ (Dance of Death), and it tells of an old challenge, in Sweden called ‘holmgång’. In ancient Nordic times, it was a way to solve disputes, and this solution was simply single combat. The winner would have the right to whatever he may have wanted from the loser, but if this challenge was ever denied by somebody, they would be marked as a niding (outcast). It is a fast-paced and energetic song, filled with melodies of old.

"Enjoy, friends. And if you already have, enjoy it again!" More...

Samael Guitarist Leaves The Band

Swiss extreme metal legends Samael has announced that guitarist Marco "Makro" Rivao has decided to step down from the band. Rather than seeking a new guitarist, bass player Thomas "Drop" Betrisey will be taking over Rivao's spot, with the group instead deciding to seek a new bass player. A message from the band reads as follows:

"Mak is leaving Samuel. The band regrets this, but accepts his decision and we wish him all the best for his future endeavours."

Rivao added: "As some of you might know I’ve spent the last 16 years playing guitar for Samael. During those years I had the chance to meet lots of lovely people/fans, which in some cases turned into friendships, and so this statement goes to all of you.

"I’ve always been a fan of Passage, Rebellion, Ceremony Of Opposites and when I received a phone call in 2002 from Samael asking me if I’d like to join the band, it felt like an honor and also a chance to make a living out of music. All together we’ve shared a great amount of good times and I’d like to thank everyone of you for making these moments real.

"Samael is Vorph and Xy’s story and I’ve been mostly a live interpreter for their music, and I’d like to thank them too for offering me this opportunity. Now it is time for me do something different and so I am leaving Samael.

"Vorph, Xy, Drop and all of the outstanding crew members I’ve worked with during those years are like family to me and so it shall remain.

"Thanks again to all of you for making these past years such an awesome journey with Samael!”

Quiet Riot To Film Live DVD

American heavy metal veterans Quiet Riot has revealed to Italian publication, Linea Rock that they are planning to film their upcoming performance at the Frontiers Rock Festival (April 28th) for a new DVD. Speaking with the channel, drummer Frankie Benali said:

"It's really amazing when you think about the fact that we recorded the Metal Health record in 1982, it came out in 1983, and in 35 years, we have never, ever played Italy. This is historic. I am so looking forward to it. I've been to Italy before, with my parents, and I actually was in Milan in 1989 with W.A.S.P. We were supposed to play a show, and something happened and the show didn't happen, but I had very good pasta. I'm going to have one very special surprise in one of the songs. It's going to be something that we have never, ever done before like this." More...
