Devin Townsend Project Updates About Festivals

After releasing “Addicted” Devin Townsend went straight on the road and just finished a tour throughout Australia and New Zealand on which he played around two hours of music each night.

Besides recoding the final parts of his next album, entitled "Deconstruction," Devin is currently plotting, scheming and organizing a special double performance for the Finnish Tuska festival. On the night of July 2nd he will be headlining the festival with a one-off world exclusive Ziltoid show. On July 3rd he will play a DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT set which will feature songs of the latest release “Addicted” as well as material from “Ki” and many more songs from his back-catalogue. The European festival season will be followed by a 5-6 week tour through the USA and Canada starting in October.

Devin states "I have to say, things just keep getting deeper. I have a feeling that my proudest creative moments are yet to come, and my focus right now is really great. I think there's something about the perspective gained from the few years off that has gone a long way. Relearning what my motivations were as an artist really came from having some clear headed time to reflect. I'm so ready, and love what I do. Thank you for still being here (those of you who are!). That being said, I've been writing late into the nights, and although Deconstruction will confuse and possibly annoy some (many?) I believe it's a real triumph for me. Yes, it's 'heavy', but in the same way that 'Alien' was indicative of my thoughts at that age, Deconstruction is a mirror of my now. Dare I say 'mature?' ... nah. But it's pretty over the edge."

Here are the latest DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT tour dates:

June 20th 2010 (FR) Clisson - Hellfest
June 26th 2010 (IT) Collegno (Turin) - Gods Of Metal Festival
July 02nd 2010 (FIN) Kaisaniemi Helsinki - Tuska Open Air Metal Festival
ZILTOID THE OMNISCIENT one-off world exclusive show
July 03rd 2010 (FIN) Kaisaniemi Helsinki - Tuska Open Air Metal Festival
DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT show
August 13th 2010 (CZ) Josefov - Brutal Assault Festival
August 14th 2010 (UK) Derbyshire - Bloodstock Open Air Metal Festival

Gloria Morti Announces New Album Release

Finnish black metal act Gloria Morti has issued the following statement about release a third album:

"The third Gloria Morti album 'Anthems of Annihilation' is finally finished. Recorded and mixed in the band's guitarist Juho Räihä's personal studio and mastered at Chartmakers by Svante Forsbäck (Rammstein, Soulfly...) the album easily exceeds the bands earlier work. Anthems of Annihilation brings the band to new heights by its agressive yet diverse soundscape. Gloria Morti is more crushing and brutal than ever. Anthems of Annihilation is a concept album about mankind making an irreversible mistake in trying to overcome all of its biggest problems. The storyline borders from a war between men and machines to the slavery and exploitation of a whole generation. The lyrical theme takes a stance on current problems and is a reminder of the stupidity of man.

"Anthems of Annihilation will be released during this summer/early fall through German Cyclone Empire. We were very pleased with Cyclone Empires contribution with Eryx and it was clear to us that we wanted to keep on working with the label. We put such a huge effort to this album that we weren't ready to hand it out to anyone who we didn't trust 100% The recordings began in December 2009 and the last mixing tweaks were made in April 2010. After the huge effort put into the production of the album it was clear to the band that only the best mastering engineer around could touch the sound. Svante is a rock solid professional and he has a sound that all of us have loved since the first time we heard hes work. The mans reference list speaks for itself."

The album's track listing is as follows: More...

Alice Cooper Reveals New Album Details

Shock rock legend Alice Cooper was recently interviewed by the Toronto Sun and during the conversation, revealed some more information about his forthcoming new studio album, "The Night Shift." An excerpt from the interview reads as follows:

"Ten songs are written already. It’s going to be called The Night Shift. The concept is, it’s a really dark radio show where I’m the disc jockey, and every song I play will be by a different fictitious band. At some point, you’ll realize this disc jockey is a little bit more than that. And I’m sure there will be some kind of a twist ending."

Amalgama Checks In From The Studio

New York's Amalgama has checked in from the studio with the following recording report:

"Still working away diligently here in upstate NY; it was our second session at North Albany Studios following our very excellent drum session. There were some technical difficulties we had to deal with mid-afternoon yesterday but judging by the guitar lines we were laying down yesterday we have to say this is going to be one badass EP. Our producer John Spomer had endless amounts of guitar lines tracked to give it this massive feel to further amplify the drum tracks and the natural room feel of the overall recording.

"Sean was up next and ran through his tracks in record time; his playing was so solid that we even had time to go back and redo a whole song with a different bass in order to get that perfect bass tone for each track.

"We still haven't decided on a name for the disc yet or even contemplated artwork but it looks like we're going to try and get back on the road in June once this badboy is finished. We'll obviously keep you posted on what's next for us (and don't forget to 'Like' us on Facebook!)"

Discreation To Record New Demo

German death metal act Discreation has checked in with the following update about recording new material:

"Against earlier news, we`re not going to record a whole new album. Why not? Because the lack of money. Well, the truth is a bit more complicated, but what counts is the fact, that we`re not going to record a new album this year. Instead of that we have decided to record four of the new songs in great quality, to have a new promo demo which shows our current direction and shape. The dates are set and at the end of august we will have newly recorded stuff for you.

"In September this year we're going to re-release our last album 'Order To Advance' together with Musicaz Records. Especially for this purpose we committed a new mastering for our first demo 'The Great Curse,' which will also be released on this cd. This album will come as a digipak with two booklets. One for 'OTA' and one for 'TGC.' It will be released in Germany, Austria and Switzerland."

Sunday Old School: Suffocation

The New York death metal scene may not be quite as revered as the New York hardcore scene, but no-one can deny that it has produced some great results. One of the most acclaimed bands in death metal emerged from this scene, namely the grindcore-influenced Suffocation. Suffocation was formed in 1989 by vocalist Frank Mullen, guitarists Guy Marchais and Todd German, bassist Josh Barohn and a friend of his, though lineup would prove to be brief, as Mullen formed a new version of the band shortly afterwards with guitarists Doug Cerrito and Terrance Hobbs, along with drummer Mike Smith, all previously in the band Mortuary. The band took influences from the likes of British grindcore pioneers Napalm Death and Brazilian thrashers Sepultura and released their first EP, "Human Waste," in 1991 through Relapse Records, with a full length debut, "Effigy Of The Forgotten," following later that year via Roadrunner Records. The album was well received and the band went back to the studio to record their second album soon after. "Breeding The Spawn" was released in 1993 through Roadrunner, which was not quite as praised as the bands previous effort.

Drummer Mike Smith left the band after this release and was replaced by Doug Bohn and the band recorded their third studio album, "Pierced From Within," which has since become an extremely influential album in the field of extreme metal. After an EP in 1998 named "Despise The Sun," the band decided to call it a day. The band was not to remain inactive for long however, as Mullen decided to reform the band in 2003, being joined by original guitarist Guy Marchais, as well as guitarist Terrance Hobbs and drummer Mike Smith, in addition to new bass player Derek Boyer, who was formerly a member of Decrepit Birth. They quickly released a new album, entitled "Souls To Deny," the next year and set about making their mark in the world of metal once again by touring relentlessly, before releasing another well received album in 2006, which was self-titled. The band gained exposure to a completely different kind of audience in 2007, when they appeared in a commercial for The History Channel's documentary on The Dark Ages before splitting from Relapse Records to sign with German label Nuclear Blast for their next album, "Blood Oath," which was released in 2009 and earned the band their first entry into the Billboard album charts, when it reached number 135.

Suffocation is currently touring in support of "Blood Oath" and plans to release a documentary film entitled "Legacy Of Violence" this year, along with many other projects including a comic book and a video game. They are regarded as one of the most influential bands in the history of death metal and many young bands today can be seen wearing Suffocation merchandise and praising the individual members as well as the band itself, with drummer Mike Smith being credited as one of the best drummers in the genre and AllMusic.com naming Frank Mullen as one of the best vocalists in death metal.
